@TheSBleeder At the same time, I'm sure Johnny 5 was also angry at Oscar for tricking him pretending to be his friend using him as bait just to steal the jewels from the basement of the warehouse which is another reason why he chose to stop Oscar.

I think it's also intellectual. It may seem like a simple movie, but behind it there's a whole notion that few movies are able to explore with such efficiency these days about AI. Like Chappie or Finch, that's looks like a "nice try", but it didn't even come close to the epicness of Short Circuit.

    • @Vyndora
      @Vyndora Рік тому +6

I have to agree. I replied to another comment on this video and I'll say the same thing here. The song was iconic in Footloose and I'll always remember the scene it played in during Footloose. The cover of it used in Shrek 2 was, in my opinion, fantastic and I absolutely got that cover for my own musical collection.
This however? This tops both of those. The song carries a certain energy with it, and Kevin Bacon's shoe getting caught on the pedal during a game of chicken with giant tractors doesn't match that energy. It's still good, but I don't feel as passionate about it. In Shrek 2 it did match that energy, but the nature of what was going on while it was playing was aimed at a different, and largely younger, audience. It was more farce and parody.
I remember watching this the first time as a kid and getting right up in front of the television, and we're talking almost touching the screen close, almost in tears because I was worried Johnny5 was going to die. This scene is the one I associate the song with more than the other two becasue it has the energy, the states are high enough to match the passion and urgency of the song, and I personally feel there is an incredibly subtle philosophical statement being made here.
The song asks "where have all the good men gone" and describing what a good man needs to have to be the hero the song is begging for. Johnny5 is a robot. The entire movie revolves around Johnny5's interaction with the world and humanity, showcasing people considering him beneath them because of it. So when the woman needs a hero and can't find any men to be that it's juxtaposed by Johnny5, a robot, exemplifying those qualities. He knows death is the most likely outcome of his actions and chooses to do what he believes is the right thing to do regardless.

I might come down as the most awkward comment on here but.. here it is:
I was blessed to be rewatching this as a 37 years old today, with the person I’m the closest with on this earth. That person is terminally ill, and I will be losing her in the next few weeks.
I remember becoming so emotional during that scene back when I was 8 years old, and seeing Johnny 5 doing all he could to do good before it would be too late for him.
Today, Johnny 5 countdown to 0 was just as emotional as I know I will be losing my mother very soon. We are trying to capture a few last good moments despite the time running short.
My mother rented this movie for me as a kid in the 80’, and it makes this silly/goofy movie very special to me... especially today.

Not a damn bit of CGI was used in this one or the first one, either. Everything was done by puppetry, clever camera angles, close-ups and some really, REALLY good modeling and/or stop motion. Helped that both films had a good editor, too. But what you see is what you got. A six-foot-tall, "working" robot with a slew of guys running the electronics just off-camera. Even Jim Henson would be impressed.

You hear him wincing in pain and looking down at the timer, knowing that his life is literally on borrowed time. Even still he never hesitates, and he does what needs to be done. The timer giving the scene an real since of urgency to the audience, while also filling them with awe and despair.

I just noticed that at 00:40 , 00:52 and 1:36 at least, that the camera sways slightly (especially at 00:40). Which is amazing. Because it gives the point of view through Johnny 5's eyes, what he's seeing at the time, and of course if he were human he is going to be dizzy, feeling faint, etc. Basically they are showing Johnny's real-time point-of-view based on the condition of his "health". Now THAT is attention to detail. I don't know who filmed it that way, whether it was the director, the director of photography, the camera man, etc. but whomever or whomeverS they were, if I am going to make a movie, I want them on my crew. Those are some sharp eyes and those little details help make a movie great.

I had bilateral (double) inguinal surgery last week along with scar tissue in my back removed. Got home, next day my plumbing backed up and my HVAC capacitor popped within 30 minutes of each other. I tore the main incision open and damaged something inside, because I have had new bleeding/bruising the last 3 days that's growing and will likely need another surgery Monday. I pulled out of my driveway a little while ago and the transmission cable snapped on my truck. A lot of shit and I was feeling defeated, just can't take anymore. Then I thought of this exact scene, lol. It starts at the perfect time! I am leaking and running out of power, but I ain't dead yet👍🏻
Life, you will not get me down! I am really pissed off! 🤣💪🏻
    Thank you for this!

Man hearing Johnny say that 'Oscar You Will Not Get Away I am REALLY PISSED OFF' is so freaking hilarious as I remember Schroeder saying the samething in Short Circuit 'MayBe it's Just Pissed off' and Crosby said 'It's a Machine Schroeder it doesn't get pissed off it doesn't get mad it doesn't laugh at your jokes it doesn't get happy it doesn't get sad IT JUST RUNS PROGRAMS' and after seeing this movie Johnny 5 certainly showed all of that.

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
Where's the streetwise Hercules to fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and I turn
And I dream of what I need
    I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
    He's gotta be strong
    And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
    I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
    He's gotta be sure
    And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life!
    Larger than life
    Somewhere after midnight
    In my wildest fantasy
    Somewhere just beyond my reach
There's someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat
It's gonna take a superman to sweep me off my feet
    I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
    He's gotta be strong
    And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
    I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
    He's gotta be sure
    And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life
    I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I could swear there is someone, somewhere
    Watching me
Through the wind, and the chill, and the rain
And the storm, and the flood
I can feel his approach like a fire in my blood
    I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
    I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
    He's gotta be sure
    And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life
    I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
    I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
    He's gotta be sure
    And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

Hit the button for the bridge, start the song as soon as the bridge reaches the top of the yellow gate, and rush rush rush as soon as you can walk past the gate. If you make it, everything should line up nicely for the helicopter. Very nice!

I find it amazing in this movie they managed to make you feel deep chill bringing emotions for what is in today's eyes an extremely crude, practical effect. They do this multiple times. Today's movie writers and directors could learn a lot from it.
