Well if you need a new engine, rather than use up your ramp time I can recommend a West Wales couple who are rather experienced in Daihatsu engine swaps.
Saw rust on RHS of boot at 23:49. Until you get an MOT pass, DO NOT look behind the plastic panel or remove the rear wheel to look at the weld seam where the boot floor joins the wing as you will find the sealant has hardened to cause water ingress and caused rust that needs welding. Also, don't look at the front floor from underneath immediately below your heel position where the floor meets the chassis - same problem. Don't ask how I know!
@@justsomeone89 Own a 2005 car and regularly maintain and clean it. But the sealant they used becomes brittle and separates from the metal, allowing water and dirt to stay enclosed and rust away. In hindsight, easy to spot by checking the sealant is firm and not flaky. If flaky, peel off and spray/paint black underbody sealant.
Rich, while I'm sorry you've got to deal with this ones smoking habit, it did give me a chuckle when you mentioned it was the same engine as the C1 etc. On the way home tonight, I was following a C1 through Christchurch in my 206 (1.6 16v). This C1 was burning lots of oil. I overtook it going onto the bypass, and was fully giving it the beans up to the speed limit (70 and not a bit more...). C1 promptly overtook me braking for the next roundabout, and heading up hill on the A35, I was struggling to keep up with it! They may be prone to smoking, but bloody 'eck they seem to take a beating well - he/she must've been ragging it in a way that'd kill most engines!
Great little cars, Sirions. No issue on them would cause me to blink, they're a doddle to repair - even the rust. Check the pcv if it's burning oil, bang in a new one before doing anything else. If that doesn't cure the oil burning, drain the oil, chuck a gallon of kerosene into it instead of oil, let it idle for a bit. That'll free up stuck rings. Then do a full oil/filter change. & change the spark plugs - nobody does, so do it.
You might fall in love with it - we took in a Terios, repaired it, sold it to a customer - his missus hated it, so he traded it back in against a Freelander we had. I drove the Terios for a week to "fill a gap" - that was a year ago & i'm still driving it. I love it, gonna keep driving it. You can chuck an engine into a Sirion/C1/Aygo/107 in a few hours btw - so even if the motor was utter toast, I wouldn't give a damn. New balls!

I had a similar issue with my daughters polo. That drank oil, which screws the emissions and makes them run very lean. People suggested chemtool b12 and fill up the bores, then leave it a few days to soften the carbon that’s sticking the rings. I have also heard of atf mixed with petrol, diesel (boiling, not too safe but a very old trick) and white spirits. All need an oil change before running the engine and another a few days later. The first run is a hold at decent revs for 10mins to get things nice and hot. There’s a UA-camr called oil geek and he said something about an oil that cleans this type of issue, but you’ll need to look.

The other side looked like it was rubbed against a tree or building. Dashboard looked like it was cleaned with sandpaper and according to the seller you couldn't open the bonnet. The brothers of the seller had showed up looking annoyed, and it did kind of started looking bit dodgy. Did manage to get away ok though. Couple of days later bought the Y from air-cooled Porsche specialist.
Fantastic colour Kitch. Problem with the "Citybugs" and the i10 etc many many many people are shopping within your criteria and they hold ALL the money - my Mrs has a Matiz 59 plate with sub 30k miles - she is not happy with it but it goes and goes well - good one petrol and insurance a bit heavy on tax ............. when she moans I tell her what a similar i10 would cost and her idea of costing @£4k tops goes out the window
Very interesting issue with the smoking engine… as you say it’s just like Hubnut’s Charade which he tried to fix with magic potions and partially succeeded with before doing an engine swap. I’d let it sit with some diesel / ATF poured into the bores to try and loosen up the piston rings which do seem like the likely culprit. It is a peculiar Diahatsu thing with it just occurring on no load, it does seem to come with age / mileage so is not yet a known issue with the other cars that you mentioned use that engine. I’d imagine these cars get a lot of cold starts and short urban journeys so that won’t help with bore wear and coking up. I bet you could quickly and easily do a decoke, drill bore hone, piston ring and big end bearing swap with the engine in the car….
@@UPnDOWN I just love the way a 3 cylinder engine sounds, a bit V6-ish. There's an old shape Corsa round here with a 3 cylinder engine and a loud exhaust. Now loud exhausts usually bug me but that thing sounds absolutely badass and isn't hugely loud. Also, I reckon the reduction in back pressure has endowed the car with at least 3 quarters of a bhp more!
My friends toyota corolla had the same issue. His issue was that the oil was too runny😅 the quickoil places use fully synthetic 0w-40 oil and the toyota wanted semisyntetic 10w-30 or 40..can't remember. He cganged the oil and hey presto..the smoking stopped
Call that smoky.. ? Nah, Hubnut's Charade was much worse than that. You could run that for ages, so long as you keep an eye on the oil level. Also, I'd give the car a good service,, as it doesn't seem to have had much of that. Also, rear seat room v boot space. I think you'll find it's the same as the Mk2 Yaris..., the rear seat slides backwards and forwards, so you've got great flexibility over how much seat and boot space is available.
So the oil gets into the combustion chamber and burns. Daihatsu, tuned by Ferrari F1. There are a lot of those little Daihatsus around in NZ. I test drove one, and found it pretty nice, though inclined to sway on bends. But what modern Japanese small cars is good at is space: loads of space in the cabin. Put a great big box on top of the platform, and in the case of Nissan, embrace the cube, and with Daihatsu, disguise it with curves. When I first got into a Toyota Spade, there was so much space I laughed. Like getting into a black cab--I think you actually could wear a top hat in one. I've got a little Toyota with one of those "The engine is cold" lights. You'd think it was telling you how long before you could start caning it, but in a city box with a CVT, not really. But what I dislike, and must work out how to turn off, is the "Eco" light. I know how hard I'm pushing the throttle, thank you, and don't need a warning light flickering. Hope Skit doesn't have one of those. But of course, what you are really doing is assembling the cast for a children's book series: _The Adventures of Dumpit and Skit_. Hilda will sometimes talk to them about her track days, and the C6 will look down its aristocratic nose at them and offer grand remarks about how evocative smells are, and sometimes, when it's really quiet, they'll go and gently try to wake up the SM.
Does the car have a gummed up oil breather system putting pressure onto all the other things you mentioned? When picking the treatment solution look for the words 'magic, miracle or mechanic in a can'' on the bottle. Good luck and I await with interest the chosen solution.
Such a shame that Daihatsu = lots of issues usually bad rust and engines. The Daihatsus I've experienced I've really liked, but they are ancient now. The G11 and G100 Charade (the force, for me, is REALLY strong with the G11) are where I fell for the Daihatsu charm. Anyways: I like this car. Like the look of it, love the impressive practicality. Best of luck getting it to behave....despite the odds..
I have just bought a car that I thought was alright. But it's not. - needs a timing chain (I can't believe I didn't hear the rattle) - leaking oil - injector washer went years ago so it leaked diesel all over the engine so it's now covered in tar - has an oil pressure DTC - DTC stop start command relay shorted to ground - and a dead glow plug Apart from all this it's fine. 🙈
30:51 I dont think it was a stupid thing to say at all, I own several engines with just one (1) piston ring from factory.... Of course, they are 1 cylinder two strokes but thats neither here nor there... Ironically enough, it would also appear the engine in this car needs multiple rings to currently burn more oil (from looking at the volume of smoke) than the two strokes with their single ring as well... Just goes to show the two stroke supremacy :)
Very similar to a mk1 yaris, I would expect it to be identical but it tries to look different even though it clearly is the same, like the facelift version it has the 3 cylinder engine and silver knobs for the climate control. The 1KR-FE apparently...might have low tension piston rings, Toyota had some issues with oil burning on engine of that era. It might grow on you.
My brother's Auris has the same problem with the engine. His mechanic told him to wait for it to cool down before doing the emissions test, and this made no sense to me - but after seeing what you said about the fan going on, I finally understand!
Can't fault these cheap low tax cars absolutely brilliant. Me my dad and stepmum all worked at same place pre COVID. The company went under and they only had the one car and obviously had to find jobs. We went for a picanto I believe it's £20 tax and it's a brilliant little car. 2009 absolutely no rot and runs spot on. Yes it's no race car but never lets ya down and cheap to run. If I didn't have an accumulation of children I'd probably ditch my smax for something like this that I can just drive to death.😂 See I think the Mk6 fezza is a better car but I'm a ford guy however the space is bad we chopped the Mrs in for an ecoboom just not big enough with kids plus no low tax unless you go diesel.
yaris would have been good too if you have further trouble with this. little 1.33s go on and on and on. lots and lots of room in the back almost like a van surprisingly
I think "like a van" is a theme in the Japanese industry at the moment. Lots of little cars have van-like bodywork, and so huge interior space; and the new prestige car is something the Alphard and the like: a Toyota HiAce with a luxury yacht interior.
That red car has come from auction, i cant remember the name of the auction but they use those AI pictures for their website, think its BCA auctions or something, that wasnt a part ex hes just bought it from auction
The C1/107/aygo and these have the terrible Daihatsu/toyota engine. Always oil consumption. Much rather would have bought a C3/206/207 with TU3A for 500-1000 quid
Excellent, comfy, refined, economical cars. Until the electrics go haywire and/or the battery gets drained overnight at random, or diesel starts leaking from that inaccessible spot between the back of the engine and the firewall. And a cambelt change costs £400, and it takes 40 minutes (with practice) to change a headlamp bulb.
@@hunchanchoc8418 All the Grand Modus' are post face-lift, so headlight bulbs are two minute, no tool needed job. Cam belts are a pain on most modern cars, sadly.
Should have gone for a Suzuki splash. Wifes is on 175000 now. And only £20 to tax
Does the handbook not tell you how to turn on the 'Hello happy' ?
A Porsche 928 binnacle thing going on
Very interesting issue with the smoking engine… as you say it’s just like Hubnut’s Charade which he tried to fix with magic potions and partially succeeded with before doing an engine swap.
Certainly be easier to fix this properly than most other cars, but I'm really hoping to avoid that!
Worth having just for the sound it makes!
Have you heard it? I wouldn't say it sounds great haha!
I think you'll find it's the same as the Mk2 Yaris..., the rear seat slides backwards and forwards, so you've got great flexibility over how much seat and boot space is available.
i believe the replacement engine he fitted to that rot box is smoking and burning oil now
Wow ,how do you managed to find a broken Daihatsu ? You must try to find a YRV , they also available on 4X4 :D
Alternatively, look at the engine breather system, take it apart and actually check to see if any of is blocked...
Great car - get in touch if you want some genuine factory alloy wheels FOC
Ooh, interesting....how do I get in touch?
@@UPnDOWN - I've just sent you an email :)
Make sure the breathing system is clear... can often cause smoke issues...
- needs a timing chain (I can't believe I didn't hear the rattle)
- leaking oil
- injector washer went years ago so it leaked diesel all over the engine so it's now covered in tar
- has an oil pressure DTC
- DTC stop start command relay shorted to ground
- and a dead glow plug
Apart from all this it's fine. 🙈
“Skit” is Swedish for “sh*t”
Hope that is not an omen, great video as always.
The older model looked nicer and classier. I like oddball cars!😊
Just goes to show the two stroke supremacy :)
man's wife buys Wartberg Sirion
Dpf filter blocked? take for long run.
This engine is smoking when you let go of the accelerator pedal. It is no smoking when you push the pedal.
It's doing both, when the engine is off load and the throttle changes are sharp.
“Do not come to me for car buying advice” says the published author of essential car buyers guide 😜
Of course this is not a TVR but it made me giggle
*unless the car in question is a TVR Chimaera or Griffith! 😆
24:55 i think it's the tip of a vape???
Why wouldn't you just pick up an old Suzuki Swift? The Sirion is a notoriously awful little bucket of shite.
Thing in the boot is the tank/mouthpiece from a vape
Great Video!
I believe the platform is more closely related to the mk2 Yaris.
My brother's Auris has the same problem with the engine. His mechanic told him to wait for it to cool down before doing the emissions test, and this made no sense to me - but after seeing what you said about the fan going on, I finally understand!
Ha! Yeah, it could be why...
Rolling Road? Edit. I was impatient. My apologies.
I look forward to many more videos.
The sort of car that Hubnut would buy 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Liking the BX Estate
Awesome fella 👍😎
Did someone overfill the oil, check the level.
Nope.
Smart forfour 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.5 177bhp turbo, most have disc brakes all round, a/c, great cars you can try mine if you want.
Bit late now, we've bought the Daihatsu lol
@@UPnDOWN next one, also they don't rust as much as most cars of that age
@@joeg8186 Surely the 1.5 turbo was 150hp, not 177 ?
@@hunchanchoc8418 no 177 and Tony who use to remap them said most were 180 before he started
Have you ever felt a school boys trousers 👖 🤣 😏 😳 😂 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
yaris would have been good too if you have further trouble with this. little 1.33s go on and on and on. lots and lots of room in the back almost like a van surprisingly
Yari are quite sought after round here by the takeaway drivers, one of the few cars they can't kill
I think "like a van" is a theme in the Japanese industry at the moment. Lots of little cars have van-like bodywork, and so huge interior space; and the new prestige car is something the Alphard and the like: a Toyota HiAce with a luxury yacht interior.
I may be wrong but the piece of tat in the boot looks suspiciously like the mouthpiece end of a vape.
that's what I thought it was
yep 100%
That red car has come from auction, i cant remember the name of the auction but they use those AI pictures for their website, think its BCA auctions or something, that wasnt a part ex hes just bought it from auction
Was that thing in the back a Douche Flute?
It's a daihatsu...it rots .. off the assembly line ...much like minis
I know 2 people who can change a Daihatsu engine....!
They also happen to have an engine with the same symptoms lying around for dissection!
So will the badge delivery numbers change?
There will definitely need to be some maintenance to the list!
Is that a black BX Estate in the background?!
Nope, it's dark grey...
@@UPnDOWN well that explains that then, looks very nice though, guessing it's a customer car?
Yep, same fella who owns the grey Activa from the other week.
Bonnet is a different colour too. Frontended?
Don't think so
I think a Matiz would have been better. My 2008 Chevrolet Spark has been the most reliable car I've ever owned, which is why I've had it for 12 years.
Too cramped inside.
Why are old diahatsu's always smokey 🤔
It is interesting...
Come on now, have you even seen a Hubnut Daihatsu video ! This is normal 😄
22'05".... "Joey... Have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"
Is the problem not wornout valve seals?
I don't think so, not with the symptoms it has. In most cases you would go valve seals, but with these engines the oil control rings are more likely.
are you buying cars to make sentences (Dumpit in Skip)?
27:00 for the problem
That's what the chapters are for...
The C1/107/aygo and these have the terrible Daihatsu/toyota engine. Always oil consumption.
Much rather would have bought a C3/206/207 with TU3A for 500-1000 quid
But they're not £35/yr to tax...
Ironically the thing in the boot is part of a vape. Maybe its been trying to quit smoking already?
Haha!
Ooof!
Umm, when it all proves too much, go look for a Renault Grand Modus 1.5 diesel.
Electrics are about par for anything French.
Had mine for 8 years and the only non service item of note I had was the ventilation fan switch.
@@patrickl2195 Facelift different, granted. Internal/wet cambelts even worse! I try to go for chain cam engines, where possible. I don't know what was so wrong with the old external dry belt, frankly. :-/

"What the hell is that" is a vape pod off a semi-disposable vape
Ewwww
Next time look at smart forfours, 5 doors very big inside, high spec, under £1000, but not £30 road tax.
The Mitsubishi Colt version of that is £35 road tax on certain engines.
That's a diesel though, isn't it?
@@UPnDOWN nope, 1.3 Cleartec petrol. It gets cheap tax because of start and stop. Massive inside, plus the CZ2 spec gets you cruise control and an abysmal stereo. Had one myself .
