Long term studying

  • If you are planning to go to med school or are already in it, there is a common structure to the coursework that leads up to big standardized tests. Basically, you take lectures that go into detail about various subjects over the course of a couple years, and then later on you are tested on this same information in an all-encompassing standardized test. So how do you study for the coursework in the pre-clinical / pre-medical lecture years in a way that will build a foundation that you can access during the final big MCAT or USMLE Step 1&2? I just wanted to give some generalities that worked for me. Basically, you want to get used to studying a little bit every day as you are in each of your courses, so that you are getting the knowledge and concepts into your long term memory. Cramming at the last minute will never allow you to access this material years later.
