- Pedro II was the second, and last Emperor of Brazil. He inherited the throne at the age of five, and would, once he had grown up, be able to bring stability to a country plagued by political tensions and uprisings. His reign saw Brazil become a strong, liberal and prosperous nation which could only be matched by the United States at the time.

Similar to Frederick The Great. He didn't deserve power, but was forced by his father. He turned out to be one of the greatest rulers in history of humanity.
It is said that when the Emperor was to embark to Europe after being deposed, Brazilian Navy officers approached him and offered: "Your Majesty, we'll take your country back for you. Just give us the order." To which he answered: "No. Brazilian blood shall not be spilled on my behalf."

The fact that we had a good emperor does not mean that his successor would be as good as he. It also does not mean that our current problems would not exist, since many of them are cultural or social problems that have nothing to do with the republican model of the current State.

The fact that he was a TRUE patriot that actually LOVED his country sticks with me. As a Brazilian myself, sometimes it makes me embarrassed to think that we came to love our country for its superficial things, and just settle when injustice, greed, and lack of progress haunts our government. He dreamed of a GREAT nation. He loved this country. It was his country. Not Portugal, not any other. Brazil was his home. And the fact that he was prevented to see this country that he loved, flourish.... breaks me.
Yeah. Reading about him is heartbreaking. You just get filled with so much love and sympathy for the great old man. And to think he didn't even want the title. He would have been happy to be a citizen if he could help it. He should have been a teacher. But, alas, as God has decreed that he serve as emperor to his people? He did his best under the role. His absolute best. And it showed. Unaffected by ego or pride or sometimes even regard for his own safety and never using his imperial title as an excuse for cowadice: he served. He did his duty. And he forged peace. Such a peace that generations came without ever known the pain of war and political instability. He was such a great ruler that he created a nation who believed they could be without him. And when they decided they did? Partly due to the influence of oligarchs upset that he finally ended the evil institution of slavery. He, an old man by then and tired by the burden of his crown, finally let go and took the rise of the Republic as his chance for retirement.
But it turns out. Governing is hard. The Republic almost immediately was presented with issues. People called out to the emperor, whose great wish now is just to be allowed to return to his home, and offered to fight for him to get his crown back. He refused. "Fate" has made its choice again. He's tired, and he'd be damned if Brazil spills blood on his behalf just to get back a title he no longer even wants. He just wanted to come home. As a citizen. And who could blame him? Since he was a boy, he'd given everything he had. At that point, who could be so cruel as to ask him to push more after he'd already drained himself?
Dom Pedro II deserves his title. Deserves his honors. And deserves the admiration of all those who know what it means to love a country.
A curiosity: Dom Pedro II was a great supporter of freedom of expression, so much so that he did not censor comic strips or news from newspapers that made fun of him, or criticized.Unlike the republic, which was marked by numerous military dictatorships, in which we had no freedom of opinion and expression.
Whoops... Let me just show you the reality of the facts: despite being called a dictatorship (mainly by leftists), it was a historical process that occurred during the Cold War, what means we cannot consider that time as we do today. The military government had the purpose of preventing the communists to take power and start a leftist proletarian dictatorship. Because of that, we're not a big Cuba today. And of course.. At that time (I asked real people who lived that period, not Wikipedia), you actually did have freedom. Of movement, opinion, everything. You just could not start raising hell and breaking it all down, exploding bombs and robbering banks, murdering people "in the name of the revolution", because doing so would take you right to jail, if not worse. It was not like Chilean or Argentinean dictatorships, that I can assure you. But telling me that what the resistance did was democracy... Bullshit. That was terrorism!

@@joaomarcelo7708 O poder moderador foi responsável por uma estabilidade política saudabilíssima na época, diferente de agora que é time do Joãozinho contra time do Arnaldinho brigando pra ver quem fica no poder. Uma das ferramentas políticas mais sofisticadas da época. Vale lembrar que isso não tornava o imperador um absolutista, apenas lhe dava direito de dissolver o parlamento e convocar eleições, mas ainda assim precisava do apoio do Congreso e dos parlamentares. Não se esqueça que a liberdade de expressão que a imprensa possuía na época era enorme, espantando até mesmo os ingleses e dando um baile na liberdade de expressão que a República veio a ter e vem tendo agora.

funny how the story of Pedro II reveals the tragedy about our country,a once great and pioneer nation founded in glory and prosperity blessed by God with natural resources and a rich culture now faded in obscurity and surrounded by corruption and despair as it's people get dumber by this cultural industry which only values lust and disonesty...

I think it´s mainly a racial not a political problem, if you look at other big colonial Nations like America, Canada or Australia, you see they were economically more sucsessfull because they had a different demographical (overwelhimgly white Anglos-stock) makeup at that time. Put blacks on an island an you get Haiti, put Japanese on a Island an you get Japan. It´s the basic explanation why Brazil never became a major superpower despite it´s huge size and ressources.

And the sad part is: he's just another congressman, with all the flaws of any other. Yet people see him as an potential salvation. Pedro II would be ashamed.

I'm from Brazil and I wonder how a foreign video to explain more things about the monarchy than a video of my own country?
The things this made are still affecting the live of many brazillians, specially in Rio de Janeiro, two examples:
-The school he created is still one of the most respected and hard to get in public school in the contry (the Pedro II School, where some of the best professionals went to study)
-The Floresta da Tijuca(Tijuca’s Forest) was a devasted area for coffee cultivation, Pedro II bought the area and recreated the original vegetation. This known today as the reason we don’t have droughts, a hotter climate than it already is, and have clean air. Tijuca’s Forest remains the largest urban forest in the world.

In South Asia We found from studies of global history text that Dom Pedro the second was great wise, moral and patriotic emperor. He was last of kind monarch whom only found in legends. Brazilian people should be proud of him.

O Brasil nunca funcionou como uma República, seu destino é ser novamente uma Monarquia. Tivermos um plebiscito anteriormente, no Brasil em 1993 para restaurar-se novamente a Monarquia, entretanto, as pessoas acreditavam fielmente na mídia Brasileira, como a mídia manipula as pessoas e elas não eram informadas corretamente e naquele tempo à internet não era tão forte e acessível como é hoje, aqui no Brasil.
Espero que um algum dia tenha outro plebiscito e o resultado será outro, porque hoje, temos informações.

Wonderful! Unfortunately, most brazilians don't admire Dom Pedro II as the rest of the the world does, which is a strange contradiction. Brazilian republic erased the Imperial period memories, because the first one was illegitimately instituted. It was criminally forbidden for any brazilian to express appreciation to the monarchy, till 1988.
