What's the worst job advice you've ever gotten?!

The worst job advice I’ve ever been given is “stay with a coming for at least 6 months”. As a recruiter and HR Specialist I’ve seen where this goes wrong. Also from a personal perspective. You should never feel that you must stay with a company for 6 months if you do not like it or feel uncomfortable in the environment.

The worst career advice, which I've got, is to find a prestigious job and move forward. But when I start to question myself, what is important for me, I've understood that such things as moving forward and finding a good job are different for everyone. People tend to judge from their situations and experiences without admitting that you're not them :)

Do anything you do not like to do and wait for the right moment. Compromise what you like to do and not follow your heart (I'm talking about passion) and wait for the perfect moment. There is no such a thing as perfect timing or moment to start anything. The perfect time is an illusion!

The must dumb advice I have ever been given is: "You should get a Degree on Business or something Finance related, you will find a job that pays you well."
Consequence?, I dropped out of Business College on year one to try different things until I find this thing called Design, a field in which I am more skilled at doing it and I have way more fun with.
The real truth: There is not a secure path to a career success when you are 18.

That is SO TRUE. It's very rare that at 18, you know exactly what you want from your career!

This is pretty good :) To me it was "do something that the market wants." / "dont worry about writing about it, just make it beautiful. Presentation is everything in design"
And that's why we have beautiful behance presentations and instagram mockups that serve for nothing else other than looking great while it has 0 usability or doesnt solve the problem the cliente was having.

would you still suggest to try things you think you may like while you have stuff to pay?
I mean, the second and third advice are long-term advice (improving), that means that the short-term condition (sustaining) should be already satisfied.
Would you give these advice to everyone? also to people who still not have a stable income?
Does this video would benefit of some sort of disclaimer like
"these career advice are not for everyone, just for those who do not have to worry about sustaining themselves" ?
    or
"these are advice to help your career, but we assume you are already paying your bills" ?
    or
"remember to get paid while learning what you need to land your next job" ?
I received a lot of - let's say - bad advice, and they were spoiled by the perspective of the "advisor": they had a general view (theory) and they were correct from their point of view, but usually they were lacking specificity, making them hardly applicable as they were.
So, as usual, a grain of common sense would help to understand there is no advice that works always for everyone, so never take them in their "vanilla" version; I'd rather apply and adapt _them_ to every specific situation.
My conclusion: there are not just good or bad advice, mostly they are "nor-good-or-bad-just-non-specific-advice".

I agree David! This video could definitely use a disclaimer like, these pieces of advice didn't work for these people, but maybe they would for you. I think the general message from the video is that, you shouldn't take all the advice you get, no matter who it's coming from. Always question, never assume. Thanks for your thoughtful comment!!

@ajsmart What advice will you give to someone who wants to join your agency?

This is a tough one- we are a small company and we get quite a few CVs in a day- so I would say you need to find a way to stand out a bit! Which isn't easy- and isn't a great answer... but it's the truth :)
