Loved your feature! Extremely well-done!!! I love Hitchcock's early British (talkies) and absolutely am hooked on the early American movies: "Saboteur" and "Foreign Correspondent" because I love American World War II era movies. Most of Hitchcock's British movies are on bluray except for "Young and Innocent." I am so sad that this superb film is not recognized for the great movie it is. There is a revolutionary film shot in "Young and Innocent" that was later used in "Notorious" (Ingrid Bergman with key in hand).
Foreign Correspondent and Mr and Mrs Smith were released by RKO so Warners are the current rights holders. Suspicion is also from RKO and was released on DVD by Universal in 2003, however Warners released it in the Warner Archive Collection in the states and the Premium Collection in the UK but that's yet to happen for Foreign Correspondent and Mr and Mrs Smith (Foreign Correspondent is on the Criterion Collection in the states). Warners still has the rights to Stage Fright however it wasn't out on Blu Ray when The Definitive Collection came out, it was released in the Warner Archive Collection in the states earlier this year. It might come to the Premium Collection but I'm not sure given they don't seem to be releasing anymore. Update: Stage Fright has finally been released on Blu Ray in the UK as part of the Warner Archive Collection.
Awesome video, thank you. I was looking to see if the Definitive is worth getting over the Masterpiece collection, but think I'll just buy the extras separately as the presentation sucks on the Def.
That's really, really annoying to see how they have chosen to package the Definitive Collection. I've got most of his films on dvd and some on Blu-Ray so having 20 in one set would have been great, but that packaging design has put me right off.
I brought the definitive collection about a year and every so often would put on a movie I had not seen, then as a birthday gift I got an Amazon prime voucher and decided to pick a couple of blu-rays that added up to or around £25, one was a hammer movie the other Psycho the 60th Anniversary Edition as I had seen an article about the movie was always cut after its initial first cinema run I thought wow would love to see that, I put it on and noticed the run time 1hr 49min 04s, then it dawned on me I have the Hitchcock Collection and realised it also has the Psycho uncut version as stated on the back, bummed out I put that on and noticed its run time is 1hr 48min 51s how is that the uncut version?
I grabbed the Definitive Collection when I went to see Eternals a few weeks ago. Quite pricey but given it was packing all the films owned by Warner Bros. and Universal together in one big set (bar Stage Fright) as opposed to having them in two separate sets - a relatively small but nonetheless nice freeing up of shelf space - I wanted to pick it up. I believe Stage Fright is still under WB's ownership, but it's just never been released on Blu-ray in the UK. As for Foreign Correspondent and Mr & Mrs Smith, I have no idea if they are still under Universal's control, or there's just never been a UK Blu-ray like Stage Fright.
Stage Fright was only released on Blu Ray last year in the states on the Warner Archive collection (it might have also been released on Criterion but I really don't know) but by the time it came out HMV had discontinued the Premium Collection, it might get a UK release since Warners have started releasing Warner Archive titles here in the UK (it would be nice to see it get a UK Blu Ray since the UK DVD has a really scratchy print). Since Foreign Correspondent and Mr & Mrs Smith are RKO films Warners are now the current rights holders. Suspicion is also an RKO film so Universal released it on DVD also however it was released as part of the Premium Collection. In the states Foreign Correspondent was released on the Criterion Collection so hopefully it does get released here, Mr & Mrs Smith is stuck on DVD.
I do honestly wish I could see into the future because months before the Definitive Collection came out I actually got 2 Hitchcock Blu Ray sets, the Masterpiece Collection which is the 14 from Universal and just the Collection which is 3 films in separate cases from Warner Bros. I have a few sets with stacked discs (mainly TV shows like The X Files and Twin Peaks) and honestly it doesn't bother me as much as it used to considering it's like 2 or 3 stacked as appose to 20 or something stupid like that (annoyingly when you first get cases like that the discs are very hard to get out so I had to slightly mutilate the packaging on mine to make it easier). But aside from having 17 as appose to 20 taking up a lot more space the packaging on the Masterpiece Collection is horrendous, it looks nice but it's that horrible book packaging which has scratched all the discs to some degree (some worse then others), thankfully they all still work but I decided to put the discs in these paper sleeves you slid into the packaging and it appears to be working because as well as being easier to get out, the discs are no longer getting scratched. I guess the only good thing about it (aside from the films and the appearance of the packaging) was it was only £35.
I have the masterpiece collection, then the 3 film classic collection and , suspicion, wrong man and I confess on HMV premium. All blu ray and as this guy says it's much better box set. Reason I came here is because I wanted to see how it was presented and I hate those stacked box sets and have them all just on a 14 a 3 and the 3 hmv premiums. You can get a lot on Amazon from Italy or Germany. Think I have 34 ish not too bothered pre mid 30s and happy that Masterpiece collection was only £22 on sale and Like the sleeves with period ads and film posters 👍
@@rikaardyyz3039 Yeah, I like the sleeves and period ads in theory but there a nightmare to deal with when you actually want to watch said film (the only disc out of my set without a single scratch on it was The Trouble with Harry). I always say, practicality over design, if I had a choice between a beautiful looking set that could knacker the discs or an ugly looking set that keeps the discs safe, I would go for the latter (I'm more of a movie collector then a media collector).
@@DVDandFilmBloke I guess I'm both. I was thinking of selling mine and a few boutique labels to buy difinitive ,trouble is I ponder too much ,it was on sale for £45. I DO appreciate what u mean about those sleeves but by pressing top and bottom I can tip them out but agreed Not my favourite way as done but what else can you do with 20 films. And I'd rather have them in one box than a total of six. Still glad I came here I always wondered why North by Northwest wasn't in the Masterpiece ,👍
@@rikaardyyz3039 I ponder too much as well sometimes :). I think cost can be another factor (to be fair I got my set months before the Definitive Collection came out, maybe that's why HMV had it so cheap). Also The Masterpiece Collection was released by Universal, and Warner Bros are the current owners of North by Northwest (it's an MGM film but Warners have the rights to the pre 1986 MGM library), I guess Warners and Universal may have now come to an agreement since a lot more recent Hitchcock sets actually feature North by Northwest. The reason films from different studios (such as Paramount and even Warner Bros in the case of Rope) are in The Masterpiece Collection was, the rights to a handful of Hitchcock's films were sold to his Estate in 1983 (Universal is the current rights owner of the films in said Estate). I wonder why not all the studios Hitchcock had worked with sold there libraries to the Estate so we could have a proper definitive box set.
The Premium Collection version of To Catch A Thief has awful image quality. I'd suggest anybody wanting a copy to try and seek out the older Blu-Ray release which looks a much, much better.

Very nice video! Thanks for your tips, especially for the earlier and silent years.
Well this was a video that I didn't expect, but I am positively surprised Adam!
Thanks, great review
Warner Brothers just released stage fright on Blu ray bud.
Cool video Adam about the Alfred Hitchcock Collection
Very nice run through. I guess the next step is a multi region player so you catch up with the Hitchcock treasure trove on Criterion and Kino Lorber.
Boxed sets are fine for completists, but as much as I like Hitchcock's films , I don't want all of them, and prefer to just cherry pick my favourites!
I used to live next door to Alfred Hitchcock when I was born.
Awesome video, thank you. I was looking to see if the Definitive is worth getting over the Masterpiece collection, but think I'll just buy the extras separately as the presentation sucks on the Def.
I can't say I've ever seen any Hitchcock! I feel I should though... especially Rebecca 😂

No Rebecca or Notorious?
They're featured in the 4-movie Hitchcock Collection set seen at 7:09 😊
