Lyrics
In the suburbs, I, I learned to drive
And you told me we'd never survive
Grab your mother's keys, we're leaving
You always seemed so sure
That one day we'd be fighting in a suburban war
Your part of town against mine I saw you standing on the opposite shore
But by the time the first bombs fell
We were already bored
We were already, already bored
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling again
The kids want to be so hard
But in my dreams, we're still screaming
And running through the yard
And all of the walls that they built in the seventies finally fall
And all of the houses they built in the seventies finally fall
Meant nothing at all
Meant nothing at all, it meant nothing
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling and into the night
So can you understand
Why I want a daughter while I'm still young?
I want to hold her hand
And show her some beauty before this damage is done
But if it's too much to ask, if it's too much to ask
Then send me a son
Under the overpass
In the parking lot we're still waiting, it's already passed
So move your feet from hot pavement and into the grass
'Cause it's already passed It's already, already passed
Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling again
I'm moving past the feeling
I'm moving past the feeling
In my dreams we're still screaming
We're still screaming
We're still screaming
This song is the midpoint between hope and despair.
Beautifully said
For me hope🕴
Boredom?
You just explained why it's one of my favorites, never managed to put it into words!
Touche
Hard to believe this song is a decade old.
Where did all the time go?
The Guitologist its plder than me
Haha
Dope🕴
Time flies... So do we.
Wish i could go back to when things were simple and the world was a quieter place.
"I want to hold her hand
and show her some beauty before this damage is done"
This line always makes me cry
OMG, same! When it says "I want a daughter while I'm still young.."
Amen,same here :)
saaaame here, trying to explain to my friends like a manic haha
My wife was pregnant with our third child when the album came out. We had two boys and wanted a daughter. That line has always gone straight to my heart. We had a daughter and I try to show her beauty while she's young (the boys too).
Literally always?
It's been many years... i still love this song, i still love this band. Merci, Arcade Fire, merci d'exister.
❤️ for the soundtrack from "her" - masterpiece
🕴
You’re bienvenue 😉

Great song, predominantly a shit band with some ok songs. This song is awesome.
If i could have it back, all the time that we wasted, I'd only waste it again.
At 65 I think of that line a lot. And, I agree with it completely.
Reminds me of the lyrics on “All My Friends” from LCD Soundsystem. “I wouldn’t wanna trade one stupid decision for another five years of life.”
@@pedrojoaquim756 What a great line!
@@pedrojoaquim756 Just listened, what a great song.
Velo Mitrovich A 2000s classic song
In my dreams we’re still screaming, even 10 years later
I always adore that line. Beautiful..
James L Screaming more now.....
This song meant a lot ot me as I embraced adulthood. Now, many years and a couple kids later, it's aged beautifully. Thanks for being a band that's less interested in being cool and more concerned with having a meaningful existence in a difficult world.
This has been the lullaby i sing for my daughter since she was born. She is 3 now. My son knows the lyrics to most of AF's songs already. Thank you as always! Cannot wait until we can all rock out together at one of your shows!
You're a good father, mate!
Your son and daughter will forever thank you for introducing them to the beauty of great music!
that's so lovely!!!!
Me too!
Why did u bring more stomachs to earth? Did you hear? She's dying.
Secretly takes me back to someone I used to love
This song reminds me of the ending of It. Sad ending, you'll have to let go of the childhood you used to be and the familiar place where you grew up no longer feels familiar. But it is the reality we must accept. After all, "in my dreams we're still screaming." I love you, Arcade Fire. I completely forgot how timeless and good this song is. The Suburbs was my jam and still is.
what a great post. peace.
i agree, this song has one of the best endings ive ever heard, it just keeps building and sounds like it could go on forever, the way some of us cling to childhood and dont want to let it go, the song doesnt want to let go either, and it really doesnt all the way up to when Ready to Start starts, if youre listening to the album, its such a great and memorable transition to me that they almost seem like Part 1 and Part 2 of the same song
The American generation this song came out to is mostly grown up. Song hits a lot closer to home now as we move further into disenfranchisement with a nation that's largely letting us down. "meant nothing at all"
It means even more when you’ve “grown up” and now you have a daughter while the sky is covered in smoke, and you know the damage is done.
C, Am, E, G. Just the simplest chord progression in the world - even I can play it.
And yet it's so, so beautiful
Vocal melody is one of Arcade fire's strength
those are the gay chords, the real authentic ones are E, D, Bm, F#

It feels like 2010 all again for me when i listen to this. ❤
Forsing back time 🕴
Thanks a lot love you all wherever you are stuck between covid and strife dont give up
Best Archade song, Period
I personally think that they are the only ones who have perfectly depicted both hopes and diseases of this new millennium humanity.
i was 19/20 when this came out, it truly encompassed the space between childhood and adulthood. it's so nostalgic and bittersweet.
Win butlers voice is like a fine wine it’s gets better with age.
I just want to say how much this album changed my life. It means so much to me, I still listen to it pretty regularly. Thank you
They are my favorite couple!
Check out mandolin orange and gillian welch/dave rawlings too
This was a great summer when this came out
I think I’ve actually listened to this song everyday since it’s come out
I'm movin' past the feelin' and into the night.
This song makes me so nostalgic, one of my favorites along with Sprawl II (mountains beyond mountains)
Yes! Two of their best tunes ever
OMGGGG IM NOT CRYING YOU ARE 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
You're an adult woman. Just no.
@@Jason-eo1rh I hope you can reach a level of emotional stability where you can cry.
@Stephen Merasty that’s how I feel when I listen to In The Fade sometimes.
Jason How much of your life are you suppressing?? To cry is to feel alive, just as much as laughter, fear, joy.... this song is beautiful, I cry almost every time I hear it.
You’re an adult, Jason. you should let people cry; it’s not my fault if you’re a macho with suppressed feelings
this song is so special to me, had this playing while walking back to my university dorm during the sunset.
amazing
when he said ''in my dreams, we're still screaming'' i really felt that
The Suburbs is my favorite song of all time, words cant describe how i feel about this song. Always has me in tears. I can relate to it so much and i feel so nostalgic for a time that i'm still living in. Music really has an amazing effect on me, i appreciate it so much.
I feel like Win and Regine give really good hugs
- Galvão.
- Diga lá, Tino.
- Sentiu. Sentiu muito.

Currently hoping the fires in Oregon don’t consume the suburbs... This is everything! I love you all! Be safe, be well! ✨☮️💟🕉✨
The melancholic feeling in this tune is very relatable as we transition into the last third of pretty dark and un-salvageable 2020. Thank god we have Win and Régine to provide some much needed comfort during these sordid times.
I discovered this song about two years ago. Ever since then arcade fire are one of my ultimate favourite bands. I love this song and them!
Exactly!
They are so incredible live! Hopefully soon...
Saludos desde TIJUANA ❤️ amo esta rola
x2 también de tijuana ._.XD
Amamos!
This is what you reflect on when you're old and the clock is ticking faster all the time. You have a memory of what it was like to be young. It feels good to go back there, but then you realize the time has past. Bitter sweet yes, but now it's someone else's time.
Kevin O'Rourke
Loving all this joy....
This is a seventh year I consider this song as my favorite one. Thank you.
Those guys were on Mexico City after the earthquake on 2017 and listening to this song live made me cry a lot , still does , who knows why
The most nostalgic song in the whole universe! Love it so badly!
This album, and this song in particular, has haunted me the past 10 years... I thrill to it every time I hear it and thank you for this!
One of the greatest songs of all time
I heard this interpretion of this song many many times and it catchens me every time. thank you for that
Great!!! I remember Buenos Aires.... one of the best performance band live I saw in my life...
Still my favorite song by y’all I’ve been bumping it for years it makes my heart happy
nunca deixo de gostar dessa música, obrigado Arcade Fire
simmmm , puta de uma música top

Regine used to drop into my yoga classes at the YMCA on Parc and St-Viateur in the Mile End. She looked super tired, I would guess from the touring and all. And one time I was walking out of my place and Win stepped out of his hot ride wearing a shiny white three-piece suit to get his coffee. I smiled. Feels like old news, given that I've been a witness to the whole thing from day one. ps I love the songs!
I love this song a little bit more every time I hear it.
This song (and the album itself) reminds me of times when I was reading the book "Outsiders". I think that the story of the book fits the lyrics of many songs in so many ways. Here's a poem by Robert Frost that appears in the book and kinda suits the album too:
"Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay." .
Thank you for so many memories, Arcade Fire.
Love the poem. Have never read that one. Beautiful thanks.
@@davidknights2814 That's nice! Thanks too (:
When you're used to hearing the sophisticated final album version, its hard to imagine that the songs begin so subtle like this. Great to hear the rootsy origin of a song like this.
Everything about this song is perfect
Saudades of summer, freedom and love
I remember seeing the music video for this on the front page when it was first released. My love for his band has only grown since then, the chord sequence in this song could be looped in my head forever and I'd never grow old of it :) such a special sound.
Still One Of The Best Songs Ever. The Nostalgia And The Moments Have Now Passed Us All.
Did You Know, Everything Now Is An Amazing Record!
Gran temazo! Saludos desde Osorno, Chile. Greetings from Chile!!!
The song beautifully hits that spot between youthful innocence and adult complications. Brings back so many good memories!
Essa música é atemporal não tem como enjoar, é simplesmente inexplicável a forma como essa música me faz sentir
The energy you expell is so positive. I love watching you playing live.
I love the fact how he changed the lyric after their son was born. It's very sweet
The perfect understated rendition and the perfect duet. What a pair
Beautiful, pure an simple.
Thank you for this
Much love to everyone, stay awesome and peace out✌️🤙
Whats interesting to me, that I've never noticed before is the subtle change in the chord progression. It starts off Dmaj, Bmin, F#maj, Amaj. But then it switches to Dmaj, Bmin, F#maj, Emaj. And then occasionally for one bar goes back to the Amaj. The genius songwriting of Win Butler ladies and gents.
I love this, I couldn’t help but join in and sing along. One of my favourite songs. 🤘🏼😊💜🖤
Easily my favourite song from this band. Still sounds so beautiful
I LOVE THEM!!!! Creature comfort and Electric blue my jam!
Arcade Fire always brings me in this special mood. time flies...
I love you guys with all of my heart.
So beautiful. They are such an Amazing band.
love this stripped down version of a song that will live forever. it is like watching two magical buskers and i want to place my heart into their hat as a tip.
forever a favorite
Awww so nostalgically appropriated by themselves... love it, and love them.

Couple goals: backyard concert jam with your most adored during quarantine. We love AF - thank you for this.
La música y los olores te llevan a todas partes.
This was wonderful. I know the energy is different in this take, but I also can hear how their voice has evolved through the years. I hope arcade fire never stops making me feel so much

One of my faves! Thank you AF to be still so epic.
Essa musica facilmente me faz lembrar de todos os amigos que tive na adolescencia, ensino fundamental para o medio, e todas as coisas boas que dão saudade.
