    Lyrics
In the suburbs, I, I learned to drive
And you told me we'd never survive
Grab your mother's keys, we're leaving
    You always seemed so sure
That one day we'd be fighting in a suburban war
Your part of town against mine I saw you standing on the opposite shore
But by the time the first bombs fell
    We were already bored
    We were already, already bored
    Sometimes I can't believe it
    I'm moving past the feeling
    Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling again
The kids want to be so hard
But in my dreams, we're still screaming
    And running through the yard
And all of the walls that they built in the seventies finally fall
And all of the houses they built in the seventies finally fall
    Meant nothing at all
Meant nothing at all, it meant nothing
    Sometimes I can't believe it
    I'm moving past the feeling
    Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling and into the night
    So can you understand
Why I want a daughter while I'm still young?
I want to hold her hand
And show her some beauty before this damage is done
But if it's too much to ask, if it's too much to ask
    Then send me a son
    Under the overpass
In the parking lot we're still waiting, it's already passed
So move your feet from hot pavement and into the grass
'Cause it's already passed It's already, already passed
Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe it I'm moving past the feeling again
    I'm moving past the feeling
    I'm moving past the feeling
In my dreams we're still screaming
    We're still screaming
    We're still screaming

This song reminds me of the ending of It. Sad ending, you'll have to let go of the childhood you used to be and the familiar place where you grew up no longer feels familiar. But it is the reality we must accept. After all, "in my dreams we're still screaming." I love you, Arcade Fire. I completely forgot how timeless and good this song is. The Suburbs was my jam and still is.

i agree, this song has one of the best endings ive ever heard, it just keeps building and sounds like it could go on forever, the way some of us cling to childhood and dont want to let it go, the song doesnt want to let go either, and it really doesnt all the way up to when Ready to Start starts, if youre listening to the album, its such a great and memorable transition to me that they almost seem like Part 1 and Part 2 of the same song

Regine used to drop into my yoga classes at the YMCA on Parc and St-Viateur in the Mile End. She looked super tired, I would guess from the touring and all. And one time I was walking out of my place and Win stepped out of his hot ride wearing a shiny white three-piece suit to get his coffee. I smiled. This song (and the album itself) reminds me of times when I was reading the book "Outsiders". I think that the story of the book fits the lyrics of many songs in so many ways. Here's a poem by Robert Frost that appears in the book and kinda suits the album too:
    "Nature's first green is gold
    Her hardest hue to hold.
    Her early leaf's a flower;
    But only so an hour.
    Then leaf subsides to leaf.
    So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
    Nothing gold can stay." .
Thank you for so many memories, Arcade Fire.

Whats interesting to me, that I've never noticed before is the subtle change in the chord progression. It starts off Dmaj, Bmin, F#maj, Amaj. But then it switches to Dmaj, Bmin, F#maj, Emaj. And then occasionally for one bar goes back to the Amaj. The genius songwriting of Win Butler ladies and gents.

    In the suburbs I
    I learned to drive
And you told me we'd never survive
Grab your mother's keys, we're leaving
    You always seemed so sure
That one day we'd be fighting
    In a suburban war
Your part of town against mine
I saw you standing on the opposite shore
But by the time the first bombs fell
    We were already bored
    We were already, already bored
    Sometimes I can't believe it
    I'm moving past the feeling
    Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling again
The kids want to be so hard
But in my dreams we're still screaming
    And running through the yard
When all of the walls that they built in the 70's finally fall
And all of the houses they built in the 70's finally fall
    Meant nothing at all,
    Meant nothing at all,
    It meant nothing
    Sometimes I can't believe it
    I'm moving past the feeling
    Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling into the night
    So can you understand
Why I want a daughter while I'm still young?
I want to hold her hand
    And show her some beauty,
Before all this damage is done
But if it's too much to ask
If it's too much to ask
    Then send me a son
    Under the overpass
In the parking lot we're still waiting
    It's already past
So move your feet from hot pavement
    And into the grass
    'Cause it's already past
    It's already, already past
    Sometimes I can't believe it
    I'm moving past the feeling
    Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling again
    I'm moving past the feeling
    I'm moving past the feeling
In my dreams we're still screaming
    We're still screaming
    We're still screaming

This was wonderful. I know the energy is different in this take, but I also can hear how their voice has evolved through the years. I hope arcade fire never stops making me feel so much
