What other covers would you love to see Father John Misty perform?
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea?
Cant smile without you Barry Manilow... always sorts the men from the boys
in the aeroplane over the sea would make my whole year
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea would be terrific!!
Beach Boys, God Only Knows. I'd love to hear a contemporary take on it.
For some reason this version of the song made me realize how dang good the lyrics are.
I mean thats rad. Well done
father has a way of "preaching" the lyrics; which works so well for his songs because the words within them are so potent... but when he covers songs that have amazing lyrics delivered in that way, which i would say were sub-substantial in the original delivery, one could almost picture the podium before him and chant out the chorus lyrics,.. if not in space than at least in mind.
Either way he is a blessing and i am curious to know how Win sees this
That whole record touches on the same themes. It’s kinda brilliant
There's nothing really "sub-substaintial " about the original. Granted this cover is beautiful@@mikealagoz9321
Eulogy to the past, prologue to a dystopian future. The song tears me apart every time.
Very well said. Totally feel the same
Love from 2021 Brazil.
Hahaha we're in the suburban dystopia now boy
@@concars1234 not until we're fighting over chicken feet.
@@jgutschke28 you are lucky we don't have chicken feet around here anymore. Joe did that
"I want to hold her hand and show her some beauty before all this damage is done." This crushes my soul....
Robert Piparo . Shifted my centre too , I have two girls and I've thought the exact thing a million times but never so simple and eloquently put x
Same here. Every single time
same..
@@brotherbillie This line has sent me to tears since 2011.
"But if it's too much to ask, if it's too much to ask, then send me a son......."
4 chords have never had such an impact on my life.
hey there's 5
Life is a B-Side - There's 4.
Alexander Johnson - Where is a D chord in this performance?
Seriously. This dude is legit. 👏👏
What’s the actual tuning here?
When he sings "In my dreams we're still screaming" I get chills
who else still obsessed w this??
just when i think it can't get better he starts to whistle.
***** *SPOILER ALERT*
Andy Spendlove ahahaha
+Francisco Dionísio I love being totally entranced by a performance and then it just gets taken up another notch by something like that. It's devastating in the best way possible. Or uplifting? I don't know. It hits home tho
I got goosebumps immediately
And Just when i was reading your coment he starts to whistle too.
After having a daughter during covid and my wife miscarrying a second daughter last night, the line about showing her some beauty before all this damage is done just resonates so much.
Fine comfort in what you have!
Don’t sully your experience by diluting it with a comment on a Father John Misty cover video. Time and a place dude. RIP for your wife.
@@slanjbo probably trolling but even still what a weirdo you are. his wife didn’t even die, learn to read before posting a dumb comment
@@slanjbo also I think the point of this kind of music is to go find something you resonate to and bring some joy
Did he say his wife died? Miscarriage means that?
Hats off to CBC Music for such a crisp recording. You do his voice justice.
Thank you!
During a subsequent listen I briefly thought that I heard steel pan. I think the addition of steel pan, if done very strategically, could accentuate the darker elements in this piece.
@@cbcmusic agreed! Can we get a FLAC file anywhere to appreciate it in all its glory?
Y’a i Gotta say I was a lil bit surprised when I saw the cbcmusic signature. Pleasantly surprised. Well done CBC. Well done AF. Well done Father
I was thinking about his whistle at the end today and had to come back for the 100th time
his smooth alternance from Falsette to normal voice is amazing !
Surely a candidate for best cover version ever. Still floors me every time I hear it. It’s just perfect.
Listening to this during the Coronavirus outbreak, March 2020.

Ha, great comment. Thanks for watching. :)
+CBC Music-- Nobody was talking to you.
Yes he was.
Welcome to Mistyland.
yeah. i totally did too. it's pretty amazing
He recreates all the nuances and feeling of the original song with just his voice and a guitar. Super talented.
Well said
Dude is an UNREAL performer. Absolutely blew my mind with his amazing singing and animated stage presence. Favourite performance at Pemberton for sure.
i’m a bit late, but i’m literally crying with goosebumps listening to this. so beautiful
Same
Not really a fan of Arcade Fire, but The Suburbs is a great album, and its title track is the highlight of the record. And I'm a huge fan of FJM, so this made me very happy.
+Zach Litchman Great to hear. Thanks for watching! :)
+Zach Litchman A little more close in sensibilities would be the album Neon Bible if you want to give them another chance. In my opinion, it's a better album than the Suburbs.
+TheDeftZeppelin I love arcade fire and neon to me is the weakest next to the new latest album. however its still good. the funeral is insanely good followed by the suburbs. just my opinion though
yeah, just about the opposite here
I prefer Fleet Foxes to Arcade Fire but I loved The Suburbs. Didn't care about Funeral.
This friggin guy, I swear. Gotta love that voice.
Johnzilla nice profile picture
This song makes me sad and nostalgic for somewhere I never lived. 👌 What a beautiful voice, gives the song a whole new vibe.
Achelousaurus horneri I feel the nostalgia thing too. The Smashing Pumpkins do that to me too.
Miguel Pena I completely agree with both of you. A good kind of sadness.
Totally! I'm currently getting that vibe from Julia Jacklin's current album. And Andy Shauf. These people keep destroying my soul.
I lived this in South Africa in the 90s before apartheid fell. A completely unnaturally protected life, completely unaware of what was happening 5km away. Playing cricket in the park, bikes parked without locks... It was all a fantasy childhood.
"I am so homesick now for someone that I never knew, I am so homesick for someplace I will never be"
The Bravery

You don't cover Arcade Fire. Except if you're Josh Tillman. He really manages to get the fullest meaning out of every word. Impressed! A wonderful tribute to the wordsmith that is Win Butler.
i thought he was john misty, and also a priest.
It also writes like something he would write.
You don't cover Nirvana either. Except if you're Josh Tillman.
@@irotinmyskinhis heart shaped box cover might actually be the best cover of Nirvana anyone has done.
[Verse 1]
In the suburbs, I
I learned to drive
And they told me we'd never survive
Grab your mother's keys, we're leaving
You always seemed so sure
That one day we'd fight in
In a suburban war
Your part of town against mine
So we're standing on the opposite shore
But by the time the first bombs fell
We were already bored
We were already, already bored
[Chorus 1]
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling again
[Verse 2]
Kids want to be so hard
But in my dreams, we're still running
And screaming through the yard
And all of the walls that they built in the seventies finally fall
When all of the houses they build in the seventies finally fall
Meant nothing at all
Meant nothing at all
It meant nothing
[Chorus 2]
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling and into the night
[Verse 3]
So can you understand
Why I want a daughter
While I'm still young?
I want to hold her hand
And show her some beauty
Before all this damage is done
If that's too much to ask
If it's too much to ask
Then send me a son
Under the overpass
Under the parking lot
We're still waiting
It's already passed
So move your feet from hot pavement
And onto the grass
'Cause it's already passed
It's already, already passed
[Chorus 3]
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling
Sometimes I can't believe it
I'm moving past the feeling and into the night
I'm moving past the feeling
I'm moving past the feeling
And in my dreams we're still screaming
In my dreams we're still screaming
In my dreams we're still screaming

He made the song his own. Beautiful stuff.
definitely not

He didn’t 😂
Whistlin' like a real cowboy.
This song always makes me feel a way I can't describe
I've never liked an Arcade Fire cover. But this is on another level. Incredible.
The only cover I've seen that does justice to the original, fantastic!
James Roberts I'm almost thinking it surpasses the original. I know that is a BOLD thing to say, but this is really good stuff.
You should go check out Jake Houlsby's cover it's really great
James Ayers bold indeed - he really captures the emotion and power of the lyrics here hey
James Roberts Nah Mr Little Jeans killed it sorry
James Roberts The difference is it doesn't try to be better than the original it tries to be different.
Father John misty looks like every guy who your girlfriend tells you not to worry about.
Hahahahaha busted
Omg u killed me 100% funniest comment and most accurate comment I’ve had the honor of experiencing in a long while. Thanks. That was a good laugh out loud. Now I look like a crazy person late night in my garage. I’m moving past the feelin. Can’t believe ur comment doesn’t have 10k likes. 😂 😂😂😂😂😂
He looks like he's deep in the closet
I honestly laughed out loud! A++
@Grant Kerr class!
OMG OMG WHY DIDN'T I DISCOVER THIS EARLIER OMFGGGGG
Chilling, I get goosebumps from this. I sure would love to see an Arcade Fire / Father John collaboration on an album
All the hair on my arms stand up every single time. So incredible

Sean Weir lyricism would be crazy bro. Like all human knowledge would be transferred into your ears in one song
I'm listening to this on a beach in Ireland, reading the comments, hair standing up on my arm and I read this comment. I'm like "yes lad 😉" spot on 👍
Sean Weir sounds very Irish too 😉
This is so good it makes me cry.
+CrazyMunky84 Chill, maybe?
Jesse Pinkman
Fuck yourself bitch! I'm not trying to be a hard ass. My problem is everybody is too sensitive and whiny these days. I'm not hard it's just way too many of you are babies. I can guarantee you're a hipster.
CrazyMunky84 I'm not a fucking hipster lol
+CrazyMunky84 what kind of music do you like?
Jesse Pinkman "I'm not a fucking hipster." -Every hipster ever
wow what an incredible musician. thank you CBC we worship your station in Detroit
+Shady Groves Wow. That is the best thing I've heard all day! Glad you're enjoying the content :)
+Shady Groves I love CBC too here in British Columbia Canada - it's my company every day and keeps me thinking, singing and sane.
I remember when this song came out the day it came out last year - one year later and I can't believe how times flew by. shit can change so much in a year
can you talk more about it?
MRxROID real talk: what's changed?
WOW. i've been listening to this cover straight for almost four days now i think. absolutely stunning.
celina nomeland I had the melody and didn't know enough of the words stuck in my head for months and couldn't find what the song was that was in my head. And when I found it I kept it on for days!
I'm on 4 hours or more. Plus weed. Makes a lovely wasted evening. haha
Go outside and get some fresh air. Then, come back inside for four more days
This guy could totally start a cult
breana vonwald yah he's that cult charisma
Honestly though! Hell...I'd join.
breana vonwald ever see his cameo in Lana Del Rey's Manson inspired video? Lol..
WHERE DO I SIGN UP
agree!
I love him so much it hurts
Always come back to this!!
Always find myself back at this cover. It’s so good. Makes me feel some sort of way.
This song reminds me of my high school girlfriend...things didn't work out, but this song makes me feel the nostalgia, where things were simpler...now there's bills, work, I've lost one of my parents..so much has happened since then and it feels like yesterday :(. Such a bittersweet song, and a good cover
This cover version made me realise I've been singing some of the lyrics wrong all these years...
He has some of the lyrics switched for some reason, ex. the walls from the 70s and Houses
Michele Schettino you’ve been singing them right. he changed em
Father John Misty should write a song with Arcade Fire that'd be really awesome.
Kurt Noble Father John Misty is too facetious to do that
I guarantee they hang out, but all they do is play pickup basketball
They're really good friends actually, but I doubt that they are fit to work with each other
Hehehe father has just collaborated in their new album, "WE"
@@CriterionCafe bullshit, he played and created with Fleet Foxes, which is not facetious at all and full of feelings. The guy could do it. He's facetious about everything BUT the music, I think.
Holy shit, this is amazing, both versions (original and cover) are phenomenal
more like daddy john misty
Lara Z same
True

good job lara
@@Toolman72 For what
I've watched this video numerous times but it has brought me to tears today.
He's done a Johnny Cash and covered a song so beautifully that the original is usurped and never to return. What an absolutely lovely song. Respect to writer and Father John.
Jesus I got chills and yes, they're multiplying.
Thank you White Jesus!

i find the whistling part haunting...i love it
In a world where covers are grossly over embellished with vocal theatrics but no real feeling, this truly cut to the core, by being hauntingly simple and pure.
I love Arcade Fire so much, they are beautiful and original. I have recently discovered Father John Misty and he perfectly nails my favorite AF song.
How many times can I like this?
forgive me father, for i have sinned. way too good.
you are amazing ive been listening to you sing for years
Was definitely not expecting one of my favorite songs I've ever found to get covered by one of my favorite artists I've ever found. What an enigma.
Everything Father John touches turns to sex and magic.
Layne Simon Why Sex ?
blood sugar sex magic?
In fairness the original version is pretty magic too.
Truer words have never been spoken
A warlock??
this is goddamn beautiful
Antonio Pacelli indeed
I watch this so often.
So cool!
Keep coming back to this song. Year after year. Can't explain it.
One of the best songs ever written brings a tear to my eye because you can feel this song so much soul
If a song was ever prophetic this is it. I wish our future
could be as lovely as this melody.
Quite possibly one of the greatest covers of all time... just gorgeous
This is the first song I ever learned on guitar, also one of the first one's I learned on piano. 3 years later and I still can't cover it, I sing decently but I just can't. This guy did an excellent job, one of my favourite songs ever.
***** you described the situation so perfectly.
+Enrique Z It's one of my faves to cover! Been covering it on the piano for years now, just keep working on it and you'll get better!
He’s the only human that could do this, no one covers Arcade Fire God this is good dude ❤️❤️❤️
Song is in Standard D tuning, chords for the whole song are C Am E G.
In the verse, the G only comes in on the and of 4, but in the chorus there's a whole bar of it.
He might be doing some little variations on the G chord, but I'm not sure. Not too important. Rock on ppl!
Misty for president
This guy is kind of where the Venn diagram circles of Jim Morrison, Kris Kristofferson and Nick Cave intersect.
After hearing this, I think my life just restarted. What a cover! What a voice!
This is my favorite cover of anything, and I LOVE music. Props to Father John Misty, phenomenal musician.
It makes me feel calm hearing his voice. What a gift
I still watch this several times a year. Pure Gold.
This song still means so much to me and this cover still makes my heart and soul feel like its about to give up
Never give up :)

What a wonderful cover of an amazing song. The lyrics blew me away when I’d first heard it way back. Crazy to think it’s more relevant and relatable now. Some songs are song good that they stick w/you after they’re over. This is def one of them, in a ominous way.
He has an incredible voice. What control and musicianship. Bravo, great cover.
This cover, and the original, need more airplay. They’re an absolute classic.
The only bad thing here is that I've been listening to the original song and father John misty both for years, and only just now found THIS
Everything was perfect and then he whistled and it was GLORIOUS!

Second best whistler I've ever heard imo. Andrew bird #1 - J Tillman #2. So amazing. If you haven't heard it yet check out his song "when I light your darkened door." Mind blowing.
Still not quite on Mr. Bird's level, who is truly the best whistle man in the game.
Incredible cover so so good
This is the first I've heard of Father John Misty, been meaning to listen to him for a while. Love his voice, hopefully I like his writing as much.
