  • Building a portable diy concrete pizza oven that can sit on a table top. This wood fired pizza oven is perfect for portable use and weighs about 40 lbs. Can make mini or personal pizzas up to 8 inches. Pizza takes about 30 minutes to cook in it. Full build cost about $120.     great video no hate what so ever but not heating the stone up that goes under the pizza defeats the whole purpose of a pizza oven, but great video really enjoyed it and thank you for sharing this!

      Ya for sure, I didn’t really do any research ahead of time as I like trying new things. It did take a very long time to cook a pizza haha. If I do another one there would be a few design changes for sure! Thanks for watching

      @@DrewBuildsStuff if you decide to build it again, you should put the chimney at the front, the way you have it, most of the heat just goes straight up out the chimney and none of it really cascades over the pizza.
      Another thing with heating up the stone like lilmug809 says, if you dont, you risk thermal shock breaking the ceramic tile which weren’t designed to be used under the amount of heat, better to get a piece of corderite and cutting that down to size.

      Yah - was coming here to say to move the chimney to the front as well! I would start the burn and then rake some coals under the stone area to heat the bottom as well.
      As for the tile…. It’s interesting. Being that thin it’s going to heat up quickly - don’t know that preheating would do much. I’ve been welding on ceramic tile for a while and never broken one. Need to see, though.

      Wait! Pizza ovens in Italy don’t heat the bottom stone from underneath! They build the fire right in the middle and then move it to the back or one side. The chimney is in the front, though.

    Excellent work and build. However a major flaw is the chimney is at the back. The heat just goes right up. Should have put the chimney at the front that way the heat will cook the top of the pizza before it goes up.
    You might be able to modify the design if u use a angle grinder to cut open the back and use that as the front and either cement the existing front and make that the back. Alternatively try using he existing chimney as feed in rocket stove and cover the lid, that way the flame will escape to the front of the pizza oven. Ie.. a chimneyless design. Might be easier if u try that first.

      30 minutes for a pizza in a wood hoven is too much, big mistake putting the chimney like that.

      Yes I did little to no research as I wasn't positive the build (mainly the mold) was going to work. Use this as inspiration there's lots of comments with a few minor design tweaks that should make it work fairly well!

    This is the easiest pizza oven build I've ever seen, and no back-breaking lifting required. Thanks to the comments I see a few useful modifications to make. This is one I can gift to a friend for his balcony, thanks for this inspiration

    First of all great idea!!!! 👏👏Thanks for sharing! We followed your steps but also changed some ingredients. We mixed perlite with Portland cement and coated the oven with ceramic tiles. I read that using perlite for the insulation supports slow heating and cooling which in result avoids the cracking. We installed the chimney to the front side instead of back. The fire flows over the pizza and flow up from the chimney. The result is awesome. Until now we do not have any cracks. I will post again, if anything goes wrong👍

      It is definitely one of the easiest ways to build a oven as a DIY project. I loved the idea. Damla if you allow me, I'd like to say that installing the chimney in the front of the oven was brilliant. Could you share to me how long does it take to cook a pizza?       @@tiagovivas Thanks I read and watched a lot of resources and they all installed the chimney to the front. In my country the weather is very moisture in this season therefore I'm still making little fire every week to train the oven. The oven has reached to 250° at last. Our aim is to get 350° at least. I will post again when we put a pizza in it 👍

      @@DamlaYldrm86 250°C is definitely an achievement and would cook a pizza in up to 4 minutes! Definitely 350° will be amazingly impressive. Do you mind If I ask you how your concrete ratio with perlite looks like?

    2 or 3 ideas to upgrade said oven:
    - instead of the inside black template use strips of ceramic tiles that will form the inside sides/ceiling of the heating/insulating layer of the oven
    - use a thick ceramic tile as the floor & fire surface ...
    - build any inside structure like racks or shelves out of ceramics
    = all of the above serve to conserve heat
    - chimneys should be in the oposite side of the fire to create an airflow
    - any door shouldnt get to ceiling level since that hot air needs to be kept inside
    - chimney also could get the tube a little under the ceiling level

    Appreciate your creativity in putting this little unit together. As other have already mentioned, the chimney needs to be at the front (to prevent all the heat from escaping up the middle). Also, you could consider (in your next version) using some Perlite/Vermiculite mixed in with mortar/concrete to increase the insulation properties of the oven (keeping more heat inside the unit). Given the size of this oven, a small bag would suffice and it's inexpensive. And of course, a few (thin) fire bricks (for the base) instead of a ceramic tile. You'll have to make it a little taller (due to bricks), but it will make a huge difference in properly cooking the mini pizzas. Looking forward to version 2.

      I think the form could also be longer, to make long pizzas , like turkish pide, and still have a pretty small unit for a not so mini pizza.

    My GE microwave from 2005 finally crapped out. At first ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxO_Bc204MGjxDl87cOKcdgaRhzSqGmv_g I was unsure because I was looking for something with the exact same features. Found it with this one. Interior space cavity was large, but the outside was smaller than my old one. I love the one-button push for 1-6 minutes, and the 30 second add or 30 second start. and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I love how you can adjust the power level during cooking. The reviews said it could not be done, but this marked all the other boxes. and happy to say, it does. I can hit 1 minute start, and change the power level from 10 to 5, 30 seconds in, without interruption. my favorite feature!

    Nice to see the craftman ship on how to do stuff👍, This build got later on x-ed big time 😂. An option might have been to use this as a firebox unit, for a cold/warm vertical smoker. Using a waterpan to regulate and accumulate the heat/smoke. Or second layer/unit on top, pushing air from the back to the front for a pizza unit, temp probe in the floor and one in roof air temp.

    *Tip: make sure you are wearing disposable gloves when working with concrete. Handling wet concrete with bare hands can lead to skin peeling and a lot of pain.*

    Excellent and simple design! I am going to try to build one that will cook a 12" pizza, using a standard 12" tile for the cook platform. No need to even cut the tile. Great idea! I will add perlite for its insulating properties as well as making it a bit lighter......

    I have been looking for a way to make a much bigger oven but this technique would work well. I do think you will get much hotter temps by deleting the chimney or with the chimney in the front. You can also increase your thermal mass by making a deck out of cement. Also, placing a pizza on a cold tile will not only lower your temp but will make a poor pizza. The deck should be hot before placing a pizza on it. I am also very curious to know how the portland cement will hold up over time.

    Such a great idea this pizza oven ,thank you for sharing. As a Chef allow me please to advise you to use a pizza stone and to heat the stone bevore adding the pizza with a pizza peel so that the dough has no time to get soggy thank you for sharing.

    Great idea. In my personal opinion, I'll put the chimney in front. And then I'll make it a little wider to put a proper stone pizza... Oh, and I almost forgot, put broken glass in the concrete mix to keep heat.

      Also a tip, I’d make the body of the oven a couple inches taller so theres more room for the fire if I made it again! A lot of the heat leaves straight out the stack at the current height. Good luck!

    hello
    very interresting concept, i love it.
    i am drawing mine, with pipe in the front, maybe a back door for wood feeding, and i will use
    refractory cement, which is a concrete/cement (sorry for the name i am french) dedicated to heat purpose.
    For the floor to cook the pizza i will use my weber round palte dedicated which is specific to cook pizza on fire. search for pizza rock (or rock for pizza weber) .
    If i succedd be sure i will share my experience.

    Excellent effort. I wonder if a precast concrete pipe of suitable diameter might be forced into service with a suitable cradle and internal fittings... but I guess you'd have to cut it and then die of silicosis. Your video production smarts are excellent.

    how long did the pizza take to cook.. I noticed you put it into the oven on a cold tile... that must have taken ages to heat up.. I was reading about pizza ovens and seemingly the idea is to get them as hot as poss so the pizza cooks in 2 minutes or something.. Is that possible with your oven.. it looks very nice.

      Yes it takes about 20 minutes so not ideal. Theres a couple comments on how to improve the design with a few simple tweaks so take a look at those!

    There are countless defects I see in this project but all easy fixes. Nonetheless it's the easiest idea to fabricate a pizza oven I have ever seen. What I would have done different is to make it bigger, add a layer of insulation either by using perlite in the cement mix or a layer of rockwool and the chimney goes to the front of the oven near the entrance so that the heat doesn't escape right away upwards.

    vault oven Chimney should build on the front. if you put Chim on the end of the oven it will not generate heat as it should be.
    the Chimney should build at the front end so the heat will not directly go up but circulate first inside the oven

    The chimney is misplaced, releasing all your heat directly up the chimney, rather than heating the oven. This is critically important in this case as concrete is a very poor heat sink compared to clay or ceramics. In this design, the chimney should be forward of the cooking area so that the heat must cross over the item to be cooked and then exhausted out through the chimney.

    Howevey, the oven is extra small and the location the flue should be near the front not the back, with this design the front and the centre of the oven doesn't get hot. Good luck i definitely enjoyed the video

    Supposedly the best placement for the chimney is in the front so the fire in the rear pulls the air in and it flows to the fire then up and out the front making the heat circulate better. I watched this video while on the phone so if you said that i missed it.

    Inventive and nice job! But you should have used refractive cement for the casting and better insulation and heat retention materials. Also agree with other viewer the chimney should be in front. Nice idea though - how about an improved re-do? Like your idea though, and nice neat work

    If the chimney was more towards the opening then the heat will pass over the pizza.
    You dont show what material you add to cement. Stone and sand is good for the floor but pearlite and vermiculite is better for sides and top.
    I prefer gemopolymer cement which can handle high temperature.
    Opc cement cracks at 300 degrees C.

      Using quikrete cement is a fatal flaw I believe. I use perlite and high heat cement on my portable ovens.
      Hes got a great design though.

    Vermiculite added to the concrete would increase temperature resistance.

    The chimney should be moved to the front. It's cute but anyone looking to make this niece understand how pizza ovens work. They are super simple. They should also be an air gap in there some way to allow the fire to get air. All that's happening is your burning a fire and it's rising straight up out of the chimney. Yeah it kind of works if you leave it in there long enough but it's definitely not efficient.

    Nice but chimney should be in the front so heat passes on top of pizza and not straight up. Like that you are loosing all the heat

    Awesome idea, but sadly the pizza looks like coming out of a regular kitchen oven with too little heat 😪. The oven needs to be hotter than say 350 degrees Celsius. It really should only take a few mins to cook.

    Great build and concept! Seconding a few comments recommending moving the chimney to the front in order to draw the heat across the pizza - will make a big different to the cook.
    The other thing I see here as a fundamental flaw is that you’re not using the concrete floor of the oven to cook the pizza, or installed a cut down pizza stone to use instead. You’re losing the efficiency of the oven by sliding the pizza in on a cold tile. The brilliance of these types of ovens is how fast the heat energy is able to be transferred into the dough/pizza when it’s slid onto an extremely hot pizza stone/oven floor.
    You should be able to cook a pizza in 60-90sec if cooking directly on the floor of the oven.

    Great idea, great work--leave the background music out of the vd--it's distracting and hard on the ears. Just the natural sound of your work would be less irritating.
