I cannot believe how amazing these turned out!! I've always wanted to do a gingerbread house decorating party, but felt overwhelmed with people being at my house for the amount of time it takes to do a traditional boxed gingerbread house. These are perfect though!!

This is one of our favourite traditions too! Immediately after Halloween, I ask the kids to separate out the colourful stuff they got - this reduces the amount of candy we have to buy for the houses! Sometimes we end up with Swedish fish houses though lol.
I love that Adeline had to add siding - clearly they’ve been paying attention to your home renovations!

Pretzel sticks could turn some houses into log cabins! Fun! And you could've used licorice strings for the eyes on the one you showed where you used the Walmart icing that doesn't harden.

OMG, I love these so much! you did a fantastic job and for pennies. We are totally going to do this over and over. One thing I might try different is using the Royal icing in can thats premade by Wilton, this turns rock hard and might shorten the drying time. Thx for the ideas!

Haha!! “Roof”. I get joked about my southern twang how I say water. When I’m not thinking, it comes out “wudder”. 😂 Oh, and wolf comes out as “wuf”. 🤦🏼‍♀️
Super cute houses! I think we will do that, too!

Your children are so cute, I think Maggie is a mini Dawn! I am 55 years old and have NEVER made a Gingerbread house (even with my 3 kids *sniff sniff*) but this year I inherited a 7 year old grand daughter and my son and his wife had my first grandchild... so this would be fun to do when she comes over. Thanks Dawn!

That's so cool. I brought a kit once that required me to ice the sides of the house, it was a disaster so I brought them ever since pre made houses. Your houses are amazing. Like the child I like order too. My daughter loved doing this. The unicorn and church was a great idea.

@MinimalMom, thanks for this super-easy way to make gingerbread houses! I have not had success doing typical gingerbread houses with young kids. But your idea of building the house before hand so they’re set and using simple supplies like graham crackers and canned icing made my venture into gingerbread houses with my preschool and young elementary school aged kids so much fun! (I also think that the smaller size of the house keeps the activity just the right length of time for younger kids.) Thanks for the new fun family memory!

What a great idea! I usually have my son, nieces and nephew make gingerbread houses out of pre-made kits, but they're kind of expensive. The gingerbread in the kits and the candy don't taste very good. I'm so excited, this Christmas, to have them pick out candy and make it from scratch!

These are adorable! We’ve done graham cracker houses for many years but I hot glue them together since we never eat the crackers. After the first year or two we began to rummage through our Halloween candy to set aside what might be used for the houses. We have a local grocery store with a bulk food section that we visit to pick and choose what each person wants. It’s fun to invite friends or another family or two.

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this with us Dawn! As always, your video brightened my day! Thanks for the tip on letting them sit a few hours after you construct them. We did graham cracker houses last year but tried to decorate too soon, we will be doing this idea for sure! I liked everyone's creations! Awesome job kids & Dawn! So fun to see you create yours too! You are so creative, but we all knew that! 2 questions: 1-do you cut the cone to make sure it fits on the roof? 2-what do you do with the houses and little toys once done? Does everything get tossed in trash & are the kids good with that? (I guess that was 3 questions) LOL! Happy Weekend & thanks for helping us get ready for the Christmas season in a light, fun & gentle way! You are a blessing to me! ;)

We have been doing this for 38 years, with a few breaks. We started when DD was three and DS was five. The five yo did well but the 3yo needed more help. A class of first greaders was pretty good at it too. We made a tradition of inviting another family for a meal and dessert was making the houses. The rule was EVERYONE had to participate, but building or helping someone. No observers were allowed. We continued with the youth group or college friends. :-) Now with grandchildren we are back at it. One year a boy's house kept collapsing. He finally said added more red candy and called it the Centralia Mine Fire. We also had an earthquake. We use the mini candy canes for lamp posts with gum drops glued on. We always use meringue powder for mortar.

Love this, I might even attempt it with my two-year-old boys, I think they would really enjoy sticking the candy to the icing.
I remember making a gingerbread house with Graham crackers at my grandma's house, she's really artistic and used the icing the make icicles hanging off the eves. And when I was a teenager my siblings and I made gingerbread houses totally from scratch, they were huge and sloppy because we used buttercream icing. They lasted two days before we have in and ate them 😅
