200 years ago, naturalist Thomas Bewick wrote the following tribute: "The Horse, in his domestic state, is generous, docile, spirited, and yet obedient...Although the Horse is endowed with vast strength and powers, he seldom exerts either to the prejudice of his master; on the contrary, he shares with him in his labours, and seems to participate in his pleasures...It must be a matter of regret to every feeling mind, that these excellent qualities should be often shamefully abused...thrown away in the ungrateful task of accomplishing the purposes of unfeeling folly." It was true then, and it's true now.

There are many people who practice natural horsemanship which is the exact opposite of what this video has exposed - Buck Brannaman who's character is the inspiration for the film " The Horse Whisperer" is a brilliant example of how we work with horses showing them kindness and respect. There is a fantastic film based on him called " Buck" which is well worth watching. There is a brilliant natural horse trainer here in Pembrokeshire who also follows Buck's methods - he always says pain should never be used to train horses. It has nothing to do with the sport. You don't ban cars, because a criminal idiot hits and kills a person with their car. This abuse has everything to do with ribbon-hungry riders willing to be cruel to win, AND with the governing body (in this case the FEI) ignoring it. This is starting to change. Hopefully, this awful incident will force the FEI to really enforce strict trainng and competing rules. I've done amatuer dressage for 20+ years and my horses loved it. Not all horses do. I had one horse that hated it (which is pretty easy to see pretty quickly), so he became my weekend trail horse - which made him quite happy.

Sadly the comments to your comment don't reflect the truth.
      1) The comparison with dogs is very fitting, as this is NOT how we treat our dogs. I have been at schooling horse shows for 4th level rider, and seen horrifying treatment of horses, totally out of line of educated methods of training animals (including humans, much the same). If anyone treated a dog in the same way, everyone would get very upset, somehow, because of their size? ideas that they seek dominance (incorrect)? we allow this.
      2) With patience, but yes it takes patience, it takes time, horses can be trained with primarily positive reinforcement and develop a beautiful relationships and they'll offer behaviors and movements beyond what anyone could imagine - but of course setting firm boundaries - this does not require violence. Charlotte Dujardin I'm sure is not a terrible person, however, I think she has become the face for a whole industry that pushes their horses to do more and more - for the horse unnatural movements and also an unnatural life, and an abusive relationship. This has nothing to do with riding or training horses. It misses the whole point of the beauty and harmony that can be developed with patience and ignorance.

@@zentaurianriding4378 Yes I have to agree with you. I do have a dog, a very loyal Springer and with me being disabled, he does a lot more for me than just being my best friend. He is my ' fetch and pick things up dog ' never would I lay a finger on him, . As for horses I have to say I am very wary of them, although a lady who used to work for me was kicked in the face by her own horse, leaving her with permanent scars amongst other problems, never the less she loved horses until the day she passed away.
I have always said, it is the owners of animals that need the training first, and they must have the patience of a saint while training the animal.

    BAN WHIPS.

    • @Whisperingwoodsfarms
      @Whisperingwoodsfarms 3 місяці тому +5

You shouldn’t ban whips. Any training tool can be abusive in the wrong hands! Whips are useful as an extension of your hand or leg. Especially if you are working with the horse with both of you on the ground, the whip is helpful to touch him wher you maybe cannot safely reach with your hand. It is also good to have a whip in case you need to immediately create space between you and the horse-again for safety. When I am riding my horse and I want more forward impulse from him I first give him a gentle squeeze/nudge from my calf. If he doesn’t respond I immediately cluck/kiss. If he goes not respond yo the cluck/kiss, then I immediately give him a quick tap with the whip. Yes, it stings a little. But doing that combination consistently and early in training means he now moves forward from the gentle nudge in my leg. He immediately gets lots of rewards for that. The whip is there to clarify and reinforce the communication and the goal is to use the very gentlest touch.
I do not in anyway condone what cdj did here, and my heart breaks for the horse who appeared to look as if he felt betrayed, and was obviously confused and frightened. And despite all that he was still exceptionally well behaved. As I said-the whip should be used to clarify to the horse, and this was awful to watch. :’(

I’ve decided I’m light of this…I am going to incorporate a non-profit for a dressage society. The scoring will be changed so that there is not so much focus on gait (which acts as a gatekeeper against anyone who cannot buy a horse born with incredible gaits). The goal will be to create a dressage society for all horses because that is the goal of classical dressage-to help the horse in front of you develop to be the best horse he can be physically, emotionally, and mentally. Wish me luck. With no $, I am not sure how far I will get, but I want to try!! To at least do something rather than sit back and watch the sport turn into saddle seat,

Competitive equestrian sports of all kinds can quickly degenerate into ego/financial wankfests wherein all that matters is winning. Of course not, because most drivers are responsible. Same thing with dressage. I've done amatuer dressage for 20+ years in the U.S. I've never seen or heard of anyone doing anything like this. For the first time in history of men’s relationships with horses we are using them for leisure and sports and not working them to death or sending them off into war. We are e joying this new relationship with horses, and I’d venture to say they are too!!
I think there are systemic problems with competition at the highest levels, 100%. But banning competition altogether or riding altogether would be an incredible disservice to horses and to people. There is nothing so beautiful as the trust and partnership you experience with a horse. Horses also provide vital services to people with various disabilities. A horses walk feels very similar to a humans natural walk. By riding therapy horses, people who are paralyzed or whose mobility is limited, get to feel the sensation of walking. This is incredibly beneficial to their bodies. They all start farting when they are on the horse, because their bodies are able to move out gas they otherwise couldn’t. It’s also amazing for their confidence. It’s easy to say “outlaw it” to stop the abuse. But that’s 1. Unlikely, and 2. Would be such an incredible loss. I am grateful every day I get with my horse. @lonhro12 not sure if you are genuinely asking or being snarky. However incase this is a real question :
No. They do not have some kind of genetic memory or instinct on how to react to a human on their back or leg positions.
The TLDR would be to look into operant conditioning horse psychology and review multiple trainers to identify different teniques. Some are barbaric. Some are fair.
As a jump off maybe look at Warwick Shiller and some trainers that do clicker training. Stay neutral. Shield up of powerful opinions and decide for yourself
Training like this requires the human to have understanding of operant conditioning, shaping and capturing techniques plus good timing. The human also needs to understand the species and the individual they are working with for best results. That said there is also a lot of cross over between species - it would just be slower with more mistakes if you did not understand who you are training.
You can also incorporate clicker training and treats. Yes folks that is also a operant conditioning tool.
The horse has hardwired instincts of a prey animal and will naturally learn to move as other horses and communicate as other horses do. They can also learn to mimic others.
By understanding this we can predict and thus "capture" behaviour we want then build a que into it. Eg move forward
If the change we desire is not likely to occur immeatley we can build towards it by "shaping" reward the try, then continue to shift the bar for reward until we get what we want. Eg bow
We can build in any que to this - hand motion, leg position, voice - anything we desire.
It is possible to train without cruelty. It is possible to get flying changes or half passes ect without whip or spurs. Heck you can do it in a halter with no other tack and with rain boots bear feet or flip flops.
      Opinion/ my 2 cents:
If this is the highest level then they should be able to do the moves at liberty. No tack. No crop. No spurs. No abusive practices.

@@Obsidianoak yes I was being snarky to patricialivingstone above. Her message should have included much of what you have said in your reply. By bald statements such as "We never used anything other than training by changing foot position when riding. No crop, no spurs, nothing, just moving my feet in front and behind the saddle to achieve specific movements. I have never seen/done anything like this when riding." she is giving naive learner riders the impression that by just moving your foot etc or changing your seat position the horse will do whatever you want. this is true BUT ONLY IN TRAINED HORSES. Of course operant conditioning is essential in training naive horses and course operant conditioning includes both positive and negative reinforcement. And of course negative reinforcement involves pressure of some kind and pressure release. And of course a trainer can (and should) combine both -ve and +ve reinforcement. And obviously Charlotte has no idea of how to apply either effectively and ethically. But don't let that be an indictment of ALL ppl who use whips. It's how you use them that's important.

@@lonhro12 you make a fair point: education is needed. There is a sort of notion that horses will do what you ask if you know the right hand/leg position and /or refine by using spurs and bits with leverage ect.

I remember being 6 years old and giving my school pony a short smack on the shoulder for hesitating at the jump - my coach just about yanked me out of the saddle, scolding me in front of the entire group.
Dressage, in it's original form, is not tricks, it is more of a yoga-pilates-dance education of the body and mind for horses, that makes them strong and balanced and confident. When you start out, you literally just ride circles at varying speeds and sizes, to make the horse equally supple on both sides. A good rider becomes so attuned to his horse that their aids are "invisible". Once the horse is many years into this education, it can perform difficult maneuvers like the piaffe or passage (the floppy thing with the legs), seemingly without the rider doing much, just using his own seat and balance and light touch of the leg to achieve it.
Yes, you can whip an animals legs or hang weights off them to make them move a body part. That's not dressage, that's a perversion.
Unfortunately most of these arguments are moot since competetive and wealthy dressage circles have taken it upon themselves to prove every single prejudice right.
At this point, original true to spirit dressage and the competition have as much in common as a giraffe and Jupiter's rings.

This is far removed for natural horseman ship as it can possibly get. Good job on the person recording. This is clearly a lesson being given by Charlotte.
I want to be clear there are horse riders and trainers that absolutely DO NOT do this. They work with the horses ability and take time an effort to ensure the welfare of the horse is paramount.
Ive witnessed all kinds of cruelty at competitions junior and adult alike. Where petulant juniors beat the crap out of their tethered ponies and horses all because they didnt win or had a fence down. oive seen a semi professional showjumper
(male) take his stallion into a horse box and kick and punch it for over 10 minutes in a closed horsbox. the horsebox was thudding and swinging from side to side.
Imo there should be welfare officers patrolling all affiliated and unaffiliated events for endurance, showjumping, dressage and eventing. This means the BRCA, BSJA, BE and BD associations as well as the FEI MUST put welfare FIRST and internally appoint these officials who should patrol the car parks (especially watching those trailers and lorries parked well away from eyes), lunging pens, horse walkers and warm up arenas.
If this was to happen we would see cruelty end at competitions at the very least. But friends and clients should also be vigilant like the person who took this video and report misconduct. I'm really glad that Dujardin has been swiftly disciplined but this is the tip of the iceberg simply because professional riders livelihoods rely on performance. Thye push horses to injury and death to win at all costs. Ive personally seen this. Horses stuffed with high perfor5mance feed so that they die of colic, pushed in the training ring until they get suspensory ligament injuries and fail.

I'm so glad for the other commenters saying it's the person not the sport. Dressage does not need to be banned. Just the people who mistreat their horses. It's possible to do dressage and many other disciplines without cruelty. Banning a sport or banning whips just because of the people who misuse them is an overraction. Like others have said, we don't ban cars just because someone used one to hurt other people. Banning something won't make cruelty stop, it'll just make people feel better.
There are many horse people who really do love their horses, and compete because it's something both horse and rider enjoy. The competitions are supposed to showcase the skill of the horse and rider. There are people who use whips properly as a training tool (such as an extension of your hand, like a lunging whip is meant to be). You can look up natural horsemanship or liberty training if you're interested in other ways of doing things. Not everyone uses fear to train a horse. The sports are not inherently harmful to horses. Some of them love to run, jump, or dance.
Please don't assume alll of it is cruelty, because that would be incorrect.

However I’ve been doing dressage for years now and not once have I heard or seen the term “shock color” and also “weights to make there feet move weirdly” no that is not what happens. This will be an unpopular opinion however in the heart of this and within the equestrian community we have all been saying. There is a human within all of this. A mum. A wife. A human. She has done something hurendous that should not be tolerated, however we need to tone it down. The amount of death threats she must be getting, haterid and spiteful words. Does this mean that the Olympics should ban all equestrian disciplines? Personally I think not! Why should we in our right minds, the people who get up the levels with using no abuse. It’s wrong. I don’t think one woman’s actions should create a bad reputation for the sport. It’s wrong. It’s over dramatic in the terms of how far people are going. This does not mean I am fore her whipping that horse. I am completely against it. However there’s a certain extent you can go to. The rest of the way is pushing boundaries. So please just think before you comment!

The problem is that every top trainer wants/needs to produce Grand Prix horses too fast. Any horse under 12 years old going Grand Prix probably had some training along the way that was harmful to them physically and/or emotionally. It takes at least six years to train a horse to Grand Prix dressage, and that’s assuming the horse takes to it and there are no major set backs along the way. But to get clout and make money they need to breeding, training, campaigning and eventually sell these horses. Profit margins get lower the longer you have to keep and care for the horse. Overall dressage is in a downward spiral. Judges are rewarding exaggerated movements more and more..:if you compare what dressage looked like ten years ago vs today you would be shocked. Anytime you breed for some exaggerated characteristics in an animal it is bad news. And with artificial insemmination as well as embryo transfer, the gene pool for these horses is getting smaller and smaller. In my honest opinion, I’d love to see a new organization develop to run dressage competitions. One that truly focuses on the horse and puts less importance on scoring the horse’s gait. The horse’s gait is something that largely is limited by his innate build or conformation. A lot of horse and rider teams who train very hard and do a beautiful job will never place above some of these horses who were bred for just this purpose. This closed the door of our sport for a lot of people and also puts a fairly unattainable price tag on it.
What CDJ did in this video is reprehensible. But she has done good things for horses too-normalizing giving horses lots of time for turnout, normalizing wearing helmets in dressage instead of a top hat,,and normalizing “hack” days for the horses. These things may seem like nothing, but they are very important and she had a lot of influence on equestrians everywhere in encouraging people to give their horses turnout having relaxing leisure rides in addition to their rigorous training schedules.

Her horses are immaculate and well kept

Thank you for your intervention !! You are so right ... I did horse riding for 10 Years and you will have to whip (you will be asked to) otherwise why having a whip, right? why does it exist? I stopped horse riding when I understood the cruelty behind it, do you think the horse likes to have a bit in his mouth? to be stopped all the times, told to go left and right, stop and jump... Nope. Horses like to gallop in the field, socialize and enjoy life. You can't be an "animal lover" and pull over your weight on his back controlling him...

I don't believe dressage should be banned from the Olympics. Only abusive riders should be banned from showing at any level and any equine sport.

It is far from fair to say dressage should be banned, yes what was in the video was wrong but to assume that every horse that competes is treated that way is totally unfair on the riders that achieve everything through hard work and the partnership with the horse, that bond and partnership with the horse is so important and without that you have nothing. It is unfair to assume or suggest that all riders are doing this to their horses, whether eventing, show-jumping and dressage, don't tar everyone with the same brush

It's not the sport. The whip is used as an extension it should never be used on the horse. She is one of the worst equestrians I've ever seen on the ground. She should be permanently banned from any type of competition. Yet dressage is a vital part of a horse's training no matter what discipline as it teaches them balance which does reduce injuries.
