My Dad was Dan Osborne. I grew up listening t this report and the significant thing about this report is that it was the very first report of the death of Elvis.

Cronkite mentioned Elvis's career as one of the two most remarkable careers in American history, "the other being Frank Sinatra". You have to toss the name of Bing Crosby in there as well. For decades, he WAS popular music inspiring the likes of Elvis, Frank and any popular singer who came after him. Bing would never admit it but it's true.

      That was actually David Brinkley

Yes, it is was Brinkley who reported that; Cronkite was on vacation when Presley died.

Elvis was amazing. He was a complicated guy but he was super generous and loved music and people and life itself. His friends should have looked after him better. It doesn't matter now. He'll always be dear to tell hearts of millions.

So many of them abuse alcohol and/or drugs. Maybe they just couldn't handle the fame. Or maybe they felt lonely because they have to live such isolated lives. But that doesn't explain the ones we lost to accidents.

...and now his daughter Lisa Marie joins him.
It's hard to say if it wasn't for the drugs, how much longer he would've lived, since heart trouble seems to run in the family.
