  • In this video I show a few modifications I felt were necessary for the Dynam Spitfire after I maidened it a few days ago. I upgraded the ESC, lowered the tail/moved CG aft, and added ventilation.

    I like your methodical approach. Straightforward, sensible and comprehensive....without unnecessary waffle.

      +Michael Fisher Thanks Michael. I'm glad you found the information helpful. J

      Of course J.
      I'm new to RC planes and was cruising the net looking for info on setting up my Spektrum DX6i. The manual is not very good. I have a 'standard' high wing monoplane with 2 ailerons and two flaps. Ailerons are on a Y harness. Ditto for flaps. There's nothing in the DX6i manual that says how to set up that configuration.
      Bumped into your video and was impressed. Many folk who do UA-cam movies on RC technicalities cram in a lot of music, footage of them doing up their shoe laces and unnecessary chat about like what their dog ate today etc ;-)

      +Michael Fisher It's like you read my mind. Lots of good stuff out there but lots of inane material too. I try to stay on topic. Thanks for the acknowledgement.

    Good stuff. You're spot on with you tips concerning blade sharpness and cutting techniques. I always use a fresh blade when carving any foam. Also, it is amazing how quickly the foam can dull a blade. Keep posting your videos. They're helpful.

      I'm glad you find them helpful. I have a surprise [old school] series coming up soon... ;) It is shocking how fast foam takes the edge off a razor. Sharp razors make all the difference.

    I want the DC3 I see in the background!!! Love your paint job on it!

      Brian Phillips That is a GWS C47 and I used the Miss Virginia livery scheme on it. Calle Graphics made the decals for me. I painted it with a simple white latex paint.

      It's a looker!!! Any videos of that beauty? (I'm assuming it's RC, not just a rubber band or glider, right?)
      I've been trying to get the Dynam DC3, but it was always lower on my list, now it seems to have disappeared...

    Totally agree @ 2:53... I like a "lot of overhead" too! I want 1:1 power to weight OR BETTER. Scale is very good for looks, but I don't need to have a 350 foot runway for a small foam plane :)

      Brian Phillips right on. I don't understand why they cut it so close. Just incremental upgrades result in much better flight experiences.

      I totally agree! It would cost a few dollars, if that (Cost basis wise) to properly size the electronics. I guess the lighter the plane, the better it will fly...but I agree with your thinking.

      Thanks Rich! I almost wonder if Dynam builds-in a small amount of trouble just to let us tinker. In the air, they're great but they always seem to need some tweaking. I'll be starting a project you'll appreciate soon. Keep an eye out ;)

  • @richbishop5136

    that is so true. I remember making several mods to my Dynam C47 before it would behave in the air. BTW it also suffered from major tip stalls as did your GWS.

      I saw a UA-cam video of a much larger C47 do the same exact thing. Must be a design issue. Wonder if the first test pilot of the C47 burned it in like that.

    You can get a small scoop, and glue it to the rear vent hole facing backwards, so when you are flying, the air will go across it, and act like a vacuum helping pull the air from the front all the way through.
    I'm going to do this with mine, and will be replacing the ESC with a better one.
    One question though from a Noob with planes, on the ESC there is one set of wires going back to the Receiver. Is that both the battery power, and throttle power for the ESC? Or how does that work? I don't know enough about these yet, and I don't want to start frying electronics.
    Thanks for any help.

    • @RCVideoReviews
      @RCVideoReviews  7 років тому

      +RakinBill Three wires are signal, power and ground. The red and black wire from the esc are what provide 5v power to the receiver and the servos.

      Okay, I'm an idiot! lol. I just watched some videos on wiring a plane. I now understand about the ESC, and the BEC circuit. I'm not used to wiring stuff for planes.
      Thanks for getting back to me.

    • @RCVideoReviews
      @RCVideoReviews  7 років тому

      There are two types of ESC. BEC and Opto. Opto ESCs don't provide power. They are signal only and require an external BEC. Non-Opto ESC (built-in BEC) provide 5v power to the RX and Servo rail. You're not an idiot, we all started somewhere. Glad you're asking the questions.

    Did you have difficulty assembling this plane
    did it all go together easily?

    • @RCVideoReviews
      @RCVideoReviews  3 роки тому

      Most Dynam planes go together without too much fuss. This one needed a hole cut up front to allow airflow in to cool the ESC. It's almost airtight up front.

    Hi, I've never used a watt meter before, what does it do, go between the battery and ESC?

    • @RCVideoReviews
      @RCVideoReviews  6 років тому +1

      Paul Hatcher Yup. You put it between your battery and ESC so it can measure your amp draw. Volts x Amps = Watts. So it knows volts when you plug in, it measures amps when you hit the throttle and it tells you Watts. These are essential devices for anybody who build planes and has to come up with a motor/prop/battery combo.

      RC Video Reviews Hey thanks, I'll have to find one. I don't recall Motion with any, but I'm sure Horizon, or HobbyKing would have one.

      Paul Hatcher motion normally carries them. Amazon has them too. Must have equipment for testing.

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH I am in AUSSIE and have several DYNAM models like you i am always modifying them can you possibly give me some contact we can share mods your SPITFIRE mods are identical to mine but i obtained a 5 blade prop and of course the wattage increased but the airflow mods where sufficient have you heard of the bigger scale SPITFIRE in production with ball joints on all control surfaces CHEERS FROM DOWN UNDER TERRY

      An old soldering iron makes a great tool for making holes in foamed once it is heated up it make very clean cut holes that are actually burned in .Try it I do it all the time.

    Paint some teeth on the hole in the front and make it look angry! lol

      +RakinBill maybe if the plane requires a repainted sometime up the road I'll do that. I'd like a P40 some day.
