  • Had tons of requests for a build log of the Spitfire. It is rough as a nun's chuff... it has been hacked around many times in development.. But it all works well now.. perfectly strong and reliable. and has a 30km round trip range provided your spotter is epic, and 10,000ft...sorry...400ft foot ceiling.

    Do not let yourself be annoyed, keep on cruising your Spity. Many bad-tempered people around.
    You make a super job! Thanks for sharing the details.

    This is definitely the one of the best long range SCALE fpv wing setup for daily use which I ever seen on YT..
    Love the unused landing gear bay stuffed with electronics, and inverted and reinforced ailerion links cleared for belly landings.. Smart! 🙂 Don't you planning to build another one with the bigger size 1600mm series?

    I'm only 4 months late to this video :) I was surprised to see the CoG so far back, I'd assumed with that motor and a massive 4s in the front that you'd be adding tail weight ! You charging rig is insane as the weight of your ground station box

      Haha Wayne. It was impossible to get right, the Go pro and pan/tilt mech is actually behind the trailing edge, so very hard to compensate for! I bought a gopro 3 black to replace my GP1, just for this project because it was lighter than the old one! Yeah the ground station is a bit OTT...I am thinking of adding wheels, handlebars and a motor so it can be ridden from van to flying area like a little quad bike....and im not joking....bloody thing is nailing my back.... hope you are well buddy.

      Because I fly many planes with different batteries...sometimes I come back from flying needing to charge 30 batteries.. I can wait to do 1 at a time!! Also, you can charge and storage charge and do different chemistry batteries all at the same time. I actually have 21 chargers in total and I need more :-)

    Thanks for uploading a video showing the build. Been waiting for you to make one. Love the FPV Rig. I'm planning on getting a spitfire in the coming months and do the same. :)
    What kind of flight time can you get out of a 5000Mah?
    Did the landing gear rip off or have you taken them off? Not sure if a grass belly landing would be better than trying to land it on tarmac with the wheels. :S

    • @OMEGOOLIEBIRD
      @OMEGOOLIEBIRD  8 років тому

      Hi, thanks for your interest. having done some more flights, the total range is actually around 30km if you go gently and in doing that, the flight time is around 35 minutes. That is with the Turnigy 5000 mah 4s 25c battery. I tried various types of landing gear, original retracts and a sturdy fixed frame UC, but they were all a waste of time...it is too heavy for little wheels, Retracts waste loads of payload, fixed UC create a ton of drag, so either way, range drops dramatically. Belly landing is the best option. Good luck with yours.

    I can never decide these days whether to put my phone number on my drones and UAVs or not XD Given most of them are flown where they shouldnt be its a bit of a sticky one, i guess it depends on who finds it but by that point the decision must have been made!

    Did this start off as the bare kit version or have you modded an ARTF one?
    My lms has one in stock but it is the ARTF version so I don't know what quality the components are.
    Great Spit vids.
    Thank you.

    • @OMEGOOLIEBIRD
      @OMEGOOLIEBIRD  8 років тому

      Yeah, mine was ready built with servos etc...I took it all out and put gear in that I trust...servos were sloppy and motor was coggy, soldering on connectors was dodgy etc.....The glue they used was CRAP too, the fuselage keeps splitting apart now grrrrr. So if you can get a kit version, I would suggest that is a better idea.

      2 kg ready to fly with battery. HTX-900 are fine, better than what is was supplied with, and more accurate than they are given credit for... until you crash

      Haha!!!! quality! Got to have your number on it :-) I have taken the goggles off on a plane I last saw penetrating a tree 7KM away and gone 'shit, I didn't even write my number on it'...Then I got the calculator out and worked out how much money i'd just lost...then I got a marker pen and wrote my phone number on all my planes....

    How do you get so much flight time.

    • @OMEGOOLIEBIRD
      @OMEGOOLIEBIRD  7 років тому +1

      Just luck, kept changing prop and motor till it worked well. It was arounfd 15km total distance on the original motor and prop. The next build will use 18650 liion batteries and should have a range of around 60km total.
