I've been watching this channel for awhile now and it is my favorite homesteading channel . I like that I'm always learning things. The DIY projects you make us privy to is a huge part of that as well. Your philosophy with combining the old ways with the new ways appeals to me. Why work harder when you can work smarter? I appreciate that the channel is family oriented as well. Mr. Bigs is an awesome star of the show! I love that you do a variety of things as far as animals, gardening and cooking recipes, DIY and the products you test and bring to us that you actually honestly believe in. I hope you continue to educate people with your videos. That is the reason I watch aside for the entertainment is so that I can learn things to put into place when I get my homestead. Thanks for all you and your family do to put the videos out here for all of us to see.
I live in Indiana so will be doing it here. It will be a challenge as its mostly corporation owned farms but I'd like to practice permaculture and try to heal the land we want to buy and get it turned away from the standard soybean fields to a field full of lush grass where I can have chickens and whatever other animals we decide to put on it. I know it is going to take a lot and I have a lot to learn but it will be worth it if I can pass it on to my kids and grandkids. Thanks again for all you do and for engaging with your loyal subscribers. It means a lot.
I really enjoy how your family interacts on a daily basis and the quality of the projects you build. I love seeing the pigs zip n run in their new pasture! They are in Hog Heaven!
I love seeing the interconnected systems. For example, the straw bales that provided insulation in the winter turning into veggie beds. The pig yards turning into gardens the next season. Reusing things or land, sometimes several times. It's thrifty and productive. The innovation is really fun - new ways to plant potatoes, or squash and brassicas. All of the experiments give me ideas for my own tiny homestead. Cooking new dishes (for me) and using the products of your labor is always appreciated.

What I love? All the “how to” videos but with a fun twist. I love watching the pigs, and Pluto. And I love how Olivia helps with the goats and collecting the eggs. Would love to see more of Gina too.
For me, Lumnah Acres is also the endless enthusiasm of Al about the interconnectivity of plants, animals and soil. It's the beaming smiles from Gina at fresh life and food. It's the sheer delight from Olivia about homestead tasks, the bounding joy of Pluto, the dancing pigs in their pasture, the content sounds of poultry and a homestead just bursting with life!
Loving the positive simple fun way you go about doing the duties on the farm...And you've included your daughter and wife in helping when they can...In this labour of loving farm life...have no idea what else i'd like to see at your farm since there's a variety of things going on....Rearing of livestock and Gardening....Working outside of the home doesn't make it any easier....I guess it's what else you like and can manage....Your Homestead is large...looks nice secluded...You're both young and have many years ahead and time to introduce other things....You have to stay healthy and keep the strength up...Lovely eggs!
I love your channel! My kids(10, 8, 6, 4, 1) love your channel. Even if they're not watching, when they hear Mr. Biggs they yell out, "You watching Lumnah Acres, Mama?" LOL! Your processes, tips, and involving the family are favorites here. I know every family is different in how comfortable they are with how much of their kids' lives are shown on the internet, but our family loves seeing Olivia in the episodes and how she is involved in the homestead life.

Adding multiple birds helps diffuse aggression, add one or two, and they're targets. Moving the tractor, scatterfeed, or food scraps as a distraction also helps. Your sensible approach to homesteading, coupled with your passion, and philosophy. You don't have failures, you have learning experiences, assess, adapt, and move forward. You learn what is successful from others, then adapt that to your homestead. You don't add more than you can handle. You add infrastructure wisely, if it's not mobile, it's multi-purpose. If it's fixed, it's well planned for location. Your attitude towards your livestock, is caring, compassionate, but they are clearly not just pets, empty mouths to feed. You provide them with a good life, while they enjoy life, they work for you. When the time comes, you dispatch them mercifully, with respect, and your appreciation extends all the way to the dinner table. Your a good man Al, wiser, and smarter than you give yourself credit for. You have a lovely family, a beautiful home, and a successful homestead, with room to grow. At this point, we only have chickens and gardening going on. My husband loves to garden and I adore the interaction with the chickens. My husband is sooooo looking forward to you building/completing your outdoor kitchen. He does all the cooking in the house. I grew up around chickens, horses & cattle. In small increments tho. My parents free ranged their chickens and they ran loose on their 3 acres. They always had 3 to 4 horses and 2 steers at a time. At that time it was safe for the chickens to be loose and in the coop at night. My husband & I have 3 acres also. We were free ranging our chickens like my parents did, but neighbors pack of dogs that run loose in the area killed one of our chickens. So now we keep them penned up. We like your New Yolk City set up and plan to get our chickens set up similarly next Spring. When we can afford to we plan to completely fence off our land to keep at least dogs out. But deer are always welcome here. You are doing an awesome job sharing the good and the bad, the triumphs and the failures. Thank you for that. Have you done a video on wing trimming? Our Rhode Island Reds are frequently testing our fencing flying up and hitting what we have for roofing/shade. If we set them up in an electric fence we fear they may still fly out.

That one you said was your favorite - with the long tail feathers, is a cockeral for sure. from what I saw there were 2 cockerals one pure barred rock and the other mixed.
When I want to crate up my chickens, I start by putting some feed inside the crate. That usually gets 80% of them into the crate. Then the last few I gotta herd/catch.
The one caveat to joining two flocks is that they should be a similar size. Adding young smaller chickens to an adult flock can sometimes be dangerous for the smaller birds. Joining pullets and hens together as a flock is also easier with a rooster. The rooster will insist that the older girls let his harem grow larger.
Maybe this winter you can do a vid about building your house and what indoor projects you have planned for the future. The first vid of yours I saw was the cement countertop and I know you have more up your sleeve.
4:55 that is barred rock rooster you put in new pen. and 8:16 that one being picked by the pullet you put in is also cockeral. LOL Love your posts and videos.
How do you get your hens to wipe their feet before they go into the nest box. LOL my hens seem to purposeful step in poop just before they go to lay their eggs. So if there's an egg in the box already they smudge poop in the one that is there.
I could not put into words what I like most about Lumnah Acres, so as I read the comments I liked what others said that I also like. Some were so sweet, I cried. Didn't read them all. My first thought was, everything, I love everything. You and one other channel are my favorites, trying to get my husband to watch. I just thought of something that I don't think anyone else mentioned, your videos are clean, no foul language, in appropriate topics, no using the Lord's name in vain, everyone is appropriately dressed for the task, all around good wholesome videos.

I saw a video on another channel for a really easy way to catch the chickens. You just use wire hanger and just make a leg hook on the end. You make the hook like a snap over cotter pin but opened up a little bit. Then you just catch their leg in an up sweep motion and pull the bird right up into your other arm in one smooth motion. Looks like it takes a little practice to get the feel for it but once you do it's super quick and easy and really. ...I don't know, like easy on the bird, you know?

I'm in the hot humid deep south and alot of homestead practices are climate specific- like what kind of chicken coop to build. I have a three sided animal shelter that I plan to turn into a coop. Do you clip the feathers on your chickens? We have a 6 ft. fence and they were still flying out. Lost some to a feral cat, neighbors dog, and a hawk within a two week period. Had to cover the top to keep them safe.
Yes we do. Sorry to hear that. One thing you can do to keep the hawks out is run a rope in a grid pattern along the top of your fence. The Hawks will see this and not want to fly through it. Hope this helps
do you think the chicks from the broody hen will be smarter than the chicks that were hatched in the incubator? I am always amazed about how they "just know" how to peck and scratch for food. thanks for the entertainment.
I enjoy seeing the products you use - loved the soil block maker: ordered my own. Curious on your soil mix you use for it. Totally intrigued with the scalder & plucker. I went to Coops and More - your plucker does not look like theirs. Is there a reason you chose a different model? I'm going to be butchering out turkeys real soon & I'm seeing those at making life a lot easier - and no gum needed!! 😄

Unless they don’t.. research what breeds associate well with others. We got some Polish and overnight our Rhode island reds stripped their crown feathers, 2 of which were so bad we had to put them down. After doing research I found that that the reds will bully a smaller bird like the polish. Wish I had taken the time to research. Now I am having to build a divider in my run and an additional coop to accommodate the polish. Do the research before introducing new chickens to the flock
I think I recall you saying it in a previous video, but I want to double check: is that pretty greyish/brownish hen an Araucana? It's quite pretty, as far as chickens go anyway.
Just curious why you have such tall chicken tractors? It seems like you could streamline the design closer to Joel Salatin style. Closer to the ground using much less materials.
BullittMcQueen1 You don't walk into the Salatin chicken tractors you have a opening on the top so you can reach in and work, They are easier to move As well.
The first chicken tractor I made was a Joel Slatin style tractor. There was a few things I didn't like about it for our homestead. It was hard to get the chickens out of, it only had one use, it was just as hard to move, Joel has a homemade dolly to help asst him. Our style you can walk into and get to the chicks, we can use it for a brooder, for meat birds, egg layers, and a green house. It is lighter weight and use less material and is easier to build imop
I have free range chickens I set up a 5x5 cage out where I fed the orginal flock I let every watch each other for about 3 weeks till the new kids got about the size of the others I scatter the feed over about a 10x20 area I let the new girls out during feeding if one of the big girls #GwenTheHen chased the young ones they just went to other side of the feeding area there was enough food all over nobody could bully now they all fed together
The trick seems to let the older bird know that the new birds are living here now and not invaders on they turf let the newness wear off the newbies have been behind a fence for a long time in chicken years and one day the fence is gone
I have hen that grew up with the rest of the flock and she was hurt and isolated and now I need to put her back, tryed before and they just peaked her a bunch, should I sneak her in at night?

I just purchased some poultry netting but I still have a nagging concern about aerial attacks. Do you find that has not been an issue in your case and the shelter you have in there for them gives them enough cover?
I am trying to let a new chicken ( just one because we only have one to let in there) and we thought we did good but after a few days of her being in there, she got her neck all bloodied up, we could almost see the bone. Do you have any advice about letting her in there? Thank you in advance.
I'm in the process of introductions but have had to out a cover around my kennel cuz they are pecking at the younguns. Any suggestions cuz I have 17 that are going to have to go in the coop with the hens.
I have a 25 week old cockerel and two pullets same age and I just got 3x 16 weeks old pullets yersterday. The rooster attacked one and I thought he was gokng to kill so I seperared them. Will the rooster kill them and is there too much of an age difference? Thanks
We raised red wattle x crosses last year. The farmer raises his out on pasture all winter and we can get down to -30f . And the mangalitsa pigs is supposed to be the best the Kobe beef of pigs!
help me today is day 12 from isolating my new chickens (they are about 2 months old) from my rooster. the chickens were "visually" introduced to the rooster but are in a cage themselves. was planning on releasing them today but when i tried the rooster quickly ran to bully one of the chickens... what is wrong?? should i wait more time or do i need to do something else?

Have you had a chicken lose an eye? I cannot put my Richie in with the rest of my girls because "he" literally goes for their butts, wings, and mainly their eyes. We have them seperated in the brooder and it makes my heart sad. However i will NOT let my little baby ruin the rest of my babies.

How do you get your hens to wipe their feet before they go into the nest box. LOL my hens seem to purposeful step in poop just before they go to lay their eggs. So if there's an egg in the box already they smudge poop in the one that is there.
I hate when that happens! The eggs have been very clean since we built New Yolk City!

I could not put into words what I like most about Lumnah Acres, so as I read the comments I liked what others said that I also like. Some were so sweet, I cried. Didn't read them all. My first thought was, everything, I love everything. You and one other channel are my favorites, trying to get my husband to watch. I just thought of something that I don't think anyone else mentioned, your videos are clean, no foul language, in appropriate topics, no using the Lord's name in vain, everyone is appropriately dressed for the task, all around good wholesome videos.

I saw a video on another channel for a really easy way to catch the chickens. You just use wire hanger and just make a leg hook on the end. You make the hook like a snap over cotter pin but opened up a little bit. Then you just catch their leg in an up sweep motion and pull the bird right up into your other arm in one smooth motion. Looks like it takes a little practice to get the feel for it but once you do it's super quick and easy and really. ...I don't know, like easy on the bird, you know?

I'm in the hot humid deep south and alot of homestead practices are climate specific- like what kind of chicken coop to build. I have a three sided animal shelter that I plan to turn into a coop. Do you clip the feathers on your chickens? We have a 6 ft. fence and they were still flying out. Lost some to a feral cat, neighbors dog, and a hawk within a two week period. Had to cover the top to keep them safe.
Yes we do. Sorry to hear that. One thing you can do to keep the hawks out is run a rope in a grid pattern along the top of your fence. The Hawks will see this and not want to fly through it. Hope this helps
do you think the chicks from the broody hen will be smarter than the chicks that were hatched in the incubator? I am always amazed about how they "just know" how to peck and scratch for food. thanks for the entertainment.
I don't know. I know the chicks from the incubator are doing great and love pecking and scratching! They eat so much grass! Which is awesome!
I enjoy seeing the products you use - loved the soil block maker: ordered my own. Curious on your soil mix you use for it. Totally intrigued with the scalder & plucker. I went to Coops and More - your plucker does not look like theirs. Is there a reason you chose a different model? I'm going to be butchering out turkeys real soon & I'm seeing those at making life a lot easier - and no gum needed!! 😄

you are wright that anytime is a good time to introduce new chickens, they will sort it out.
Unless they don’t.. research what breeds associate well with others. We got some Polish and overnight our Rhode island reds stripped their crown feathers, 2 of which were so bad we had to put them down. After doing research I found that that the reds will bully a smaller bird like the polish. Wish I had taken the time to research. Now I am having to build a divider in my run and an additional coop to accommodate the polish.
Do the research before introducing new chickens to the flock

Just curious why you have such tall chicken tractors? It seems like you could streamline the design closer to Joel Salatin style. Closer to the ground using much less materials.
I think the tall chicken tractors are easier to walk into and put feed in the feeder.
BullittMcQueen1 You don't walk into the Salatin chicken tractors you have a opening on the top so you can reach in and work, They are easier to move As well.
They are also used as green houses for early planting. Better design for more uses.
The first chicken tractor I made was a Joel Slatin style tractor. There was a few things I didn't like about it for our homestead. It was hard to get the chickens out of, it only had one use, it was just as hard to move, Joel has a homemade dolly to help asst him. Our style you can walk into and get to the chicks, we can use it for a brooder, for meat birds, egg layers, and a green house. It is lighter weight and use less material and is easier to build imop
I feel bad when chickens get scared but it’s in their nature to be paranoid because of predators
I have free range chickens I set up a 5x5 cage out where I fed the orginal flock I let every watch each other for about 3 weeks till the new kids got about the size of the others I scatter the feed over about a 10x20 area I let the new girls out during feeding if one of the big girls #GwenTheHen chased the young ones they just went to other side of the feeding area there was enough food all over nobody could bully now they all fed together

The trick seems to let the older bird know that the new birds are living here now and not invaders on they turf let the newness wear off the newbies have been behind a fence for a long time in chicken years and one day the fence is gone

Yes it does a great job keeping the critters out! No our chickens dont escape out of it. We make sure it is hot all the time

I just purchased some poultry netting but I still have a nagging concern about aerial attacks. Do you find that has not been an issue in your case and the shelter you have in there for them gives them enough cover?
Yes we find the chickens hide from aerial attacks. We haven't lost any from aerial attacks

I have a 25 week old cockerel and two pullets same age and I just got 3x 16 weeks old pullets yersterday. The rooster attacked one and I thought he was gokng to kill so I seperared them. Will the rooster kill them and is there too much of an age difference? Thanks

We raised red wattle x crosses last year. The farmer raises his out on pasture all winter and we can get down to -30f . And the mangalitsa pigs is supposed to be the best the Kobe beef of pigs!

help me today is day 12 from isolating my new chickens (they are about 2 months old) from my rooster. the chickens were "visually" introduced to the rooster but are in a cage themselves. was planning on releasing them today but when i tried the rooster quickly ran to bully one of the chickens... what is wrong?? should i wait more time or do i need to do something else?

Have you had a chicken lose an eye? I cannot put my Richie in with the rest of my girls because "he" literally goes for their butts, wings, and mainly their eyes. We have them seperated in the brooder and it makes my heart sad. However i will NOT let my little baby ruin the rest of my babies.
