Tekton is about to release their 3/8 universal impact sockets (6-24mm, no skips, $210) as well as 1/4 deep and shallow impact sets (4-17!, no skips). Sure would like to see those tested. Keep up the excellent work!
I've had that Gearwrench 3/8" for 6 years now, they're tanks. Always beating on them with the M12 3/8 stubby, many don't like to return to center without a smack on the concrete but they've saved me on so many jobs 💪
JR, I feel like I see you as much or more online now as I ever did in person at the big blue staple man... We must have REALLY similar minds, at least according to big Tech's backing algorithms lolololol And to cap it off - Ive had a pair of gearwrench 3/8" for probably 7.5 years, and while I busted one, it was at near full extension at the time, and happened only AFTER I'd already busted two other brands on the same nut 🤣
These videos are so helpful for new Techs and where to and how to spend their money, you are doing God’s work with these videos! Thank you so much for supplying empirical data to the discussion. Love you guys! P.S. the videos also back up my tools selection and advice! Keep it up TTC
I have both sets of 3/8 and 1/2 metric Astro swivel impact sockets, love em! I get tons of use out of them. I tried HF Pittsburgh ones before that, those were trash.
Yep I have the 3/8 and 1/2 Astro sets and have beat the hell out of them in the shop for several years now! You definitely keep up with this channel CP, good to see ya!
@Patrick94GSR Dang that's kinda odd.. sounds exactly like me! Lol I bought the HF ones first too and then upgraded to the AP and love them for the price.
their low profile nano impact sockets are also sooo amazing. very nano, and when you don't have space to attack a ratchet or whatever you can use them with a 17mm ratcheting wrench which adds 0 size to their heigh
I’ve noticed that the Icon swivels have been on the clearance shelves at my local Harbor Freights for a while now. Might want to check back with them in a few months, for an update. I figured they were defective when I saw them on the shelf. For those penny pinchers though, you might get lucky if you buy them at rock bottom, then swap them out for the updated design later. Might be a risky gamble though, newer isn’t always better.
My Grey pneumatic 3/8" have lasted on a 1/2" air gun with their adapter. Use the 3/8 socket to 1/2" adapter all the time and it's never failed too. Picked up all kinds of gp stuff at farm machinery shows for cheap cash
Ive been using sunex for almost 20 years, 3/8 ,1/2 universals, i bought a second set after i got a brand new matco impact and it busted some of my well worn sockets, still their warranty was easy.
I've been beating on my 3/8 Astro for about 3 years now and haven't broken a single one. One thing to note on pinless is the lack of a collar on the socket helps you get in more places. Something to think about if you're looking to buy a set.
I own a set of USA made Armstrong 1/2" universals, the same as the legendary old Matcos, before the Apex slaughter. They are hands-down the best I've ever used, and I've tried everything from Pittsburgh to Sunex to Husky to Gearwrench to newer Matco to Snap-On. If one ever breaks I will be heartbroken, but so far so good.
Genuinely surprised about the Icon - I've been really happy with all my Icon stuff. That said, my impacts are almost all Sunex since there's lots of user reviews available for them, and they've been great.
@@andrewscott8892 For the price i'd hope they aren't the same. They do appear to use the same sort of 6 lobe hex ball, but are a bit different. Can likely get more degree of angle out of their design too.
For everyone out there. Especially 3/8 as Torque Test Channel mentioned will get locked up. I have started using super lube oil or air tool oil and let them soak with a few drops for a day or two and wipe excess. Some of my capri that I’ve warranted out has not locked on me. But gearwrench makes the best affordable swivels in my opinion. Just lube them up and most swivels will last longer and rotate smoother!
Hardness is just one measure, depending on the alloy of steel, if it's just a carbon steel at 51 rc hardness it's (the icon sockets) probably brittle. density, ductility, tensile strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance, the five physical properties.
I have these in SK, Gray Pneumatic, Icon, GearWrench and Sunex. SK and GP are by far the most durable I've used. Icon & Sunex come in next. GearWrench (pinned, 1/2") dead last, my main beef with them is the metal ring around the drive end of the socket... it is aluminum and it gets ripped apart if the socket rubs on anything. Total trash. I love the SK's & GP's.
Snap On likely passed on old timer lessons to next generation. Years of experience can’t be duplicated. Knowing how hot a metal needs to be, temperature to be kept at, exact quenching temperature, time, etc. all affect performance.
I've seen the Gearwrench sets drop to stupidly cheap on Amazon before. I picked up their 1/2" 15 piece metric set for $80 CAD last year. So always keep eyes out for deals!
I have the 3/8ths GP universals and they have gotten used everyday for the past 4years and are great not one has broken on me yeah they don't get the super high torque but they get you close enough to torque whatever you need to get the torque wrench on. But at the same time if I have the space ill use the solid impact sockets. Just depends on what your working on
I use mine on a 1/2" air gun with their adapter and they have lasted 8 years of occasional use. Can't beat it when I picked up all my gp stuff for cash cheap at farm machinery shows
The high durability could come from surface treatments like carburizing, nitriding, etc. this makes a thin section of harder material at the surface but it is still a little bit softer/tougher deeper into the material.
Hey TTC, i dont know if you noticed something similar but thats insane i literally searched for these exact products this morning and now you release a comparison of it. Maybe youtube mastermind make us all think of the same things at the same time. Scary stuff and thanks for the video
Would have been interesting to see the weight of each socket. A heavier socket can more effectively transfer the impact energy into torque. May have seen that the sockets with higher percentages compared to the standard socket were heavier than the ones that performed poorly. At least it would give us a reference if the efficiency loss was purely based on design or if there were other factors at play.
I do use them daily Snap On MAC SK GearWrench pinned and pinless X Core extension types ASTRO Pinless standard and deep and extension 3/8 style Best by far have been Astro pinless they all are still tight and work great The GearWrench extension Style for me are special items only used when need extra angles and have used them for the five years since new and never broke one as I stated before only use as special use when needed as I bought them for To me ASTRO sets including extension set I would highly recommend to anybody
Haven’t watched the video yet but I work at the Cadillac dealer and I use the icon set , the 21mm a lot (caliper brackets) and they’re loctited in pretty good and they’ve held up well. I just recently broke it and replaced it last week very easy at the store (no hassle). Surprised to see it break where it did and not at the pin like they usually would.
One thing you don’t mention or I missed it, sidewall thickness. Snap On makes thinner sidewall but are still much stronger then all other brands. Thinner sidewall allows you to get into tighter spots . Plus American steel .
Where tf is MAC in this test??? Their set is made in USA and a quarter the price of MATCO and FapOff, the vintage MAC swivels in my shop have been holding up for decades and doing better than any of the snap on swivels we’ve got
This was great! I know one brand that will beat Snap-on!! 🚨 It costs less and has superior metallurgical properties‼️‼️ but don’t want to say ; because you guys will get them all bought out and they will raise their prices… I’m curious if anyone else knows the Brand?

Had the X-core one but the insides were getting chewed up and they didn't move well when seating it on the bolt. No issues with Snap On except price. I only have a few of them due to the cost and need.
have had the snap on ones in standard for awhile now. as the older one breaks just warranty for the new style. never had any issues with them snapping just the old collar becomes loose.
Just paid $30 CAD for a full new set of MasterCraft (aka Gear Wrench) from Canadian Tire. Works out to about $1 USD after the exchange rate, so no complaints.
I heard that SMA just started making impact sockets. Maybe you could add those to your testing. It was only a deep though. I'm not sure when he will come out with his swivel sockets. lol
Surprised that Astro made in the top 3! I would definitely like to see how Tekton holds up in the rankings, but the website has been saying coming soon for awhile.
Love my Astro metric 3/8 and 1/2 swivel sockets. Tried HF Pittsburgh before I got the Astros, they were trash. And I don't care what brand it is, $1K for 12 impact sockets is the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my life. Each one costs more than the entire Astro set, which is insanity. In no reality would that be worth it, not even for daily professional use.
I swear I heard them start and idle the impacts in the background. Hopefully they didn't suffer any carbon monoxide poisoning from the idling impacts as they waited for them to warm up.
If it's just a dfc961 with a 3/4 drive I would get it. For your sake I hope it is, but with any manufacturer u never know what the engineers will screw up trying to make something "better".
Are these constant velocity? I assume constant velocity means constant torque at any angle. Don’t universal joints change velocity with angle and presumable torque? My question is does final torque depend on what rotational angle is landed on for the test?
I wonder how the results would change when using an impact gun with different blows per minute. Would a lower BPM lead to a longer "throw" surpassing the slop in the U joint? Would the opposite happen if using a gun with a higher BPM rating?
Well good to know the 3/8 icons arent worth getting. I have the 1/2 drive ones and it took a 36 in breaker bar and a buddy built like a gorilla to break it off. His gen 1 milwaukee high torque and 8ah battery wasnt enough to break the bolt loose or the socket. Super curious how tektons 3/8 will do. Supposed to come out this month.
Each "brand". 90% of the brands are all made by a handful of plants in Taiwan. The gearwrench X core ones are junk, the cross wears out in short order. The old USA Armstrong/Matco versions hold up A LOT (capitalized for the smooth brain below who has to prove he's better than everyone else) better. Snap on swivels are crazy expensive, but they do hold up
Im curious about longer term durability. Like, yes, there is some peening and wear, but waht does that look like after a couple hours of wear? Pretty much all videos in this genre front load on desteuctive testing, but I very rarely break tools, even cheap ones. I want to know how long they last, what is the ROI for the long run.
Have you tested if there’s more or less torque loss through these adapters based on the input torque? Ex. Would a given socket always transfer 75% of the original torque across weaker and stronger impacts? Or is there a stronger fall-off the stronger the impact?
It’s really annoying that snap on tends to perform the best because I don’t want to spend that kind of money for generally marginal performance gains. There’s no way to know the amount of time saved over a tools lifetime from having that extra 10% of available torque. Having that extra 10% in certain circumstances potentially prevents you from coming at a problem with a different approach.
@@TorqueTestChannel interesting results. I would have guessed the Sunex would have fared better given your Universal Adapter testing. Alas, this is why we watch. Thanks for testing.
Are there differences in torque between DCF921 and DCF923? Some channels struggled with the 3/8 a lot more but a single video is not enough proof imho.
i have snap on and mac ones for daily use at my job for the past 30yrs..snap ons ARE THE BEST in my opinion at least.they have the most travel, tighter tolerances, dont just dont wear out as fast, barely ever brake and when they do i get a new one.I also have ICON at my home shop that i do plenty of side jobs at.i am really impressed with them, thats for sure.they work great for what i need them to do but they are to shallow in my opinion, snap ons are just a 1/4" deeper ill say and can make all the difference when working on vehicles alot.A big problem with cheaper sets is they also like to skip sizes,in the mechanic world we need EVERY size! This gets my blood boiling the most ill say.I still see plenty of 12mm bolts heads even if the normal joe doesnt.the 1/4" impact swivels by snap on are by far my favorite sockets on an impact driver.nothing they cant do.One has to remember,i am a professional along with alot of others,we know what fits into spots and what does work...the average person would not understand.no different than from any other profession in my opinion.
To be honest ive used a lot of these sets, and I use the icons all day long at work. Never broke them and they are the cheapest ones ive owned. The matco ones are the best or next best but they are just incredibly expensive.
Tekton is about to release their 3/8 universal impact sockets (6-24mm, no skips, $210) as well as 1/4 deep and shallow impact sets (4-17!, no skips). Sure would like to see those tested. Keep up the excellent work!

I thought that the gearwrench pinless swivel sockets were made in China, just like the other Apex tool owned Husky versions.
You might have a point, the bag the 15/16" socket came in had no country marking on it
I own the Astro 3/8 unless universals. But I’m not gonna say how they are as I’m yet to use them.
Please also include Yato tool stuff if available. example of universal socket socket model YT-1064 PL
Surprised that Astro made in the top 3! I would definitely like to see how Tekton holds up in the rankings, but the website has been saying coming soon for awhile.
Astro is great, and will be lower price for a near identical product. Tekton is sniffing farts with their pricing lately
The video brought up a question. What is the real world difference between a 19mm and 3/4" socket? Can they be used interchangeably?
Yes, like 16mm and 5/8". It's basically the difference of a human hair, many factories even use the same tooling though wouldn't admit it.
Please test the new Olsa universals.

Pretty much all videos in this genre front load on desteuctive testing, but I very rarely break tools, even cheap ones. I want to know how long they last, what is the ROI for the long run.
Do weighted sockets still increase torque when they're used with one of these? Could you make a swivel with the weighted part built in?
I dont think I would buy swivel sockets. I dont own any. But I have a few swivel adapters. Don't use them much.
Have you tested if there’s more or less torque loss through these adapters based on the input torque? Ex. Would a given socket always transfer 75% of the original torque across weaker and stronger impacts? Or is there a stronger fall-off the stronger the impact?
Filetype: Quicktime, that still exists????
Please test Tektons wobbly-wobbly bits.
Im don't believe they are out
@TorqueTestChannel yes, I forgot to mention when they do come out. Never know how long "coming soon" is with tekton.
Do some made in Germany ones please :)
Do you know of any examples?
Is there a 1/2” drive impact swivel comparison video? Im curious to see if there’s a difference amongst the same brands.
This video is both 1/2" and 3/8"
Must have missed when you switched from 3/8”. Thanks I’ll rewatch
@@ricecowboy It's the 1st portion of the video
@@TorqueTestChannel interesting results. I would have guessed the Sunex would have fared better given your Universal Adapter testing. Alas, this is why we watch. Thanks for testing.
Are there differences in torque between DCF921 and DCF923? Some channels struggled with the 3/8 a lot more but a single video is not enough proof imho.
I not sure that was discussed in this video. Perhaps YOU do some searching.
@@aussiehardwood6196 perhaps you mind your own business? If I ask a question in a 2 year old video I 100% won’t get any response.
Easy to warranty needs to be a category. Some of these are sad.
i have snap on and mac ones for daily use at my job for the past 30yrs..snap ons ARE THE BEST in my opinion at least.they have the most travel, tighter tolerances, dont just dont wear out as fast, barely ever brake and when they do i get a new one.I also have ICON at my home shop that i do plenty of side jobs at.i am really impressed with them, thats for sure.they work great for what i need them to do but they are to shallow in my opinion, snap ons are just a 1/4" deeper ill say and can make all the difference when working on vehicles alot.A big problem with cheaper sets is they also like to skip sizes,in the mechanic world we need EVERY size!
I'm not seeing socket test results in the new format Live Rankings?
Normally only include data from subjects with more than one episode on there, but we can
No Mac again?
We dont have a Mac dealer, usually have to order off their website which we don't often think about doing i guess
Cornwell makes the best universal impact sockets hands down
To be honest ive used a lot of these sets, and I use the icons all day long at work. Never broke them and they are the cheapest ones ive owned. The matco ones are the best or next best but they are just incredibly expensive.
3/8" icons or 1/2"?
@@TorqueTestChannel3/8 for icon and both 3/8 and 1/2 for matco.
MAC Tools is the best
