They already tried smite as spells in 2014. With the exception of wrathful smite ( for broken fear interaction), no one ever prepared them.
Not sure if this is actually true but I've never found it to be much of an issue.
They're buffed now
The smite spells were so trash the company neutered the core paladin ability to match them. Could have just said limit to one smite per turn.
Thunderous smite was also good because it did nearly as much damage as divine smite and could stack with it. The fact that they can’t stack anymore is a bit of a bummer, but honestly paladin was the single strongest class until the wizard starts overtaking it at higher levels. It kind of needed a nerf.
They also buffed the channel divinity options like sacred blade and path of vengeance so now you can use them as part of the attack. And they made casting spells like bless more palatable. So they increased the variety of things you can viably do with the paladin, giving more options while at the same time nerfing the stuff that was too powerful.
I think they did a great job with it. I’ll have to see the full release to be sure, but I’m not too worried.
@@talongreenlee7704 3rd lvl divine smite = 4d8 vs 1 target 3rd lvl fireball = 8d6 vs 20ft radius. remind me again how paladin overtakes full spellcasters past lvl 4. The Nova issue could have been resolved by just limiting 2014 divine smite to once per turn.
You nerfed it. No other way to look at it.
This class got shafted.
Ah, the theoretical level 11 Paladin. Everybody already jumped ship at 6, but with the new version they'll just grab the Smite spell and not even bother with the first 6 levels.
You ruined it.
is there any restriction on how close together a short rest can be? like you can only benefit from one long rest per 24 hrs.
I'm hoping they make short rests a lot shorter and then limit them to two a day. Giving most of the classes things that really want back on a short rest is a good way to make sure everyone wants to take a short rest but short rest spamming could become a problem.
Depends on your DM really
@@lesshero9982
So it'll be up to the DM if the paladin can take two spam short rests to recover all channel divinity?
@@XanderHarris1023I suspect that the 2024 DMG will have alternate rules for resting like the 2014 DMG did.
The default rules will probably remain the same (i.e. a short rest takes at least an hour, but there is otherwise no hard cap on how many you can take per day) but they may present the Baldur's Gate 3 rules (short rests are effectively instantaneous, but you can only take two between long rests) as an alternate option in the DMG.
I will never understand why nerfing the smite. Literally paladin was the only melee class who literally was perfect like it was. Why
It’s so weird to say but with these new rules paladins are just worse rangers now
They should remove fighter action surge if they don’t like spike damage in the game.
“Once per turn” was all they needed to do for divine smite.
They murdered it.
Yea they absolutely butchered divine smite
Yeah, the bonus action + making it a spell (=counterspellable) is definitely overkill
the buff of being able to choose basically any of the secondary smite effects after the roll is good though, like sometimes you need the loud noise of thunderous smite lol
@@sir_longshot1755When this was first shown in the play test I loved it. The way the other smite spells work currently is clunky & awkward with the bonus actions before you hit.. But when I saw that they & regular divine smite are still bonus actions after you hit & count as spells I was super bummed. Definitely a one step forward 3 steps back approach..
Also not usable against anyone who has limited spell resistance like a Rakshasa
We want Rogues to be the ROGUEIEST Rogues! And Barbarians to be the most BARBARIANY Barbarians! And hey Paladins, we have some exciting new TERMS AND CONDITIONS for your Divine Smite!
Sigh. Smite being just another spell is one of the least inspiring design choices I've ever heard. Unless you roll a nat 20, why would you even cast it? It's wasting your bonus action to cast what's now the most boring spell in the game.
Folks, we've been told - we've been having TOO MUCH fun playing this class and apparently it has to stop. 😅
I mean... considering how it's literally a fighter but better in most cases, why wouldn't anyone do it for a viable melee build.
People saying that they roll paladins and like the DS change are lying. They don’t play the class.
Did you mean BS changes?
Lol imaging deceiving yourself this hard. Paladin is my favorite class and I like the change to Divine Smite.
They have distorted the Paladin class with this change to Divine Smite being a spell. This really sucks
I prefer the classics, that is why i still prefer the Cavalier from Unearthed Arcane. Great class without the divinity aspect. Just a straight warrior class that gained benefits while doing mounted combat.
I do like the channel divinity changes but every other change hurts.
I'm actually really excited for the new paladin.
I’m guessing you don’t know they absolutely nerfed the heck out of Divine Smite, just look it up if you want more details (basically made it a lot worse)
@@John_The_Fourth I actually did. I didn't mind this change as much as other people, especially because it basically allowed the Paladin to One Hit a bbeg without any major consequences. They might still be able to do that, but it's definitely a quality of life change that, while not ideal for traditional paladin fans, is definitely a necessary balance patch.
@@bolggamer5542but then a wizard can do the same thing using only a spell a lot and staying at 60 feet away. Yeah better quality of life
@@amiboilpon4068 I didn't say the Wizard was balanced
@@bolggamer5542 then nerf both? Really a paladin was need a nerf better then a wizard or any of the caster?
Are they selling us the 2024 classes with power creep? At what point does it become a supers game where you are paralysed by the choice of what power to use
paladin is nerfed into the ground. What they spoke about in this video is the small buffs they gave while sacrificing divine smite.
@@binolombardi nerfed into the ground?
They changed Smite. That's it.
"Ooooo woe is me I can't cast 3 smites in a turn anymore T-T"
You took a hit to DPR in exchange for some incredible defensive and utility options, which is what the paladin should lean into, imo - a front-line defender and protector of the party. It's not like there *aren't* good DPR classes still, if that's what you want. Not every class needs to be a damage dealer.
@@RobbiePDX you’re full of it.
We all knew they were gonna nerf it, but it should have been once per turn instead of this mess.
They didn’t just change smite, they intentionally introduced bonus action bottlenecking which was what they tried to remove with the other martials.
Bonus action attacks make spending a spell slot and bonus action on smites counterintuitive.
The mechanics overcorrect the problem and it’s even worse than what was playtested.
Yeah, that has been every addition to 5e in the last 10 years. 5e has always been a super hero game after level 5 with a medieval fantasy skin.
@@binolombardi Yeah, hard disagree.
They moved a lot of the Paladin's abilities away from requiring a bonus action. Smite Requires one, but it's a heavy hit when it lands. I think requiring a bit of action economy buy-in on the user's part is totally fine, especially since you don't choose to cast unless you hit your target. Also, maybe the Paladins will use their spellslots for...idk, literally anything else? Being a Smite gun is boring.
I don't like 5e, at all. I run two different 4e games, though. I love 4e so much. I understand that I'm in a vast minority.
Once all the people hyped for DC 20 discover that it is essentially 4e you might have more company.
Love the new Paladin. The buffs to Channel Divinity, their weapon use, Lay on Hands, the Smite spells, etc. make them well rounded and more than make up for the slight (deserved) nerf to Divine Smite. You can lean way more into the protector role rather than being just a Smite dispenser.
Power Creep, gotta love it
Next they're gonna let Sorcerer replenish Sorcery Points on a Short Rest
