When I lived in London I visited Kenwood House every weekend to admire the artworks you mention here and to take a coffee in the garden. Thanks for taking me back!
This is the second video I watch after Paris and I am overwhelmed by how great they are. They make the viewers better persons, they teach so much. Thank you cert very much.
I'm always impressed with the production value not to mention the information and Mr. Payne's grasp of the material. I'm a patreon and I love this channel.
This channel is probably the richest and the most valuable one on UA-cam! I cant thank you enough for bringing out such priceless pieces of knowledge into light!
You could do a series on Great Art Patrons Explained as well. Medici, Royalty, and Guggenheim, many others. It would really tie in a lot of artists and locations.
I'm so overflown with emotions upon finishing watching this. Sir, your interpretation is exquisite. Your videos are a form of philanthropy themselves; without them, I would never be elevated and stumble into the beauty of the art world as a layman. Good fortune to you!
I finally travelled to London, and I visited the Soane Museum. "A rake's progress" is available for 10 minutes every day at 2 PM. It's magical, but Hogarth's "Humours of an Election" is sublime (you have more time to admire the details). Worth the visit 100%
I never was much one for "great art", not being exposed to it much during my youth...and I probably will never travel to see any of these galleries or paintings in person...but I come away from your wonderful videos feeling enriched and satisfied that I have had the opportunity to "see" such works. Better yet, in the privacy of my own room without the crowds jostling me for position or the expenses involved. Thank you once again for an excellent piece that brings such beauty to my humble abode.
I have recently discovered your a great art series. When I was in my teens every Saturday morning I would bid my parents a farewell and take the Subway to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was one of the most incredible art experiences of my life and have visited dozens of Museum since then in U.S. and Europe. Thank you for reminding us how important art is to all of us.
Wonderful expansion of the channel. Can’t wait for my town NYC to be featured. Studied abroad in London and this episode is such a reminder of what I love about the art in that city. Bravo.
Good grief - the dozens of times I have been for walks on Hampstead Heath and walked right past Kenwood House never knowing it was full of incredible paintings- I could kick myself! Also, I visited the Soane back in the 1990s when studying in London. It is so memorable and wonderful that last year I took my family to see it. However, I had no idea that The Rakes Progress paintings were housed inside. Finally, the Wallace collection- that will be next on my places to visit when I next go to London. Superb video, as always!
I had the pleasure of already visiting Sir John Soane's Museum before watching this, and now I can't wait to pay a visit to the other two galleries of the video, thank you once again James and Joanne :)
I loved this, it's insane how informative it can be, touching on what's important while still captivating people with no previous knowledge on art education I'd love to see more on other art houses, maybe more on art collectors or the medici family, florence This channel is a real gem keep it up
Santa Fe, New Mexico has several small museums and galleries with excellent collections within perfect buildings. Three days was not enough for us as art lovers and artists. Very much appreciate your work and channel. Thank you!
I have been to the Soane's Museum in London and it is amazing. What an eclectic collection. I was amazed at the art and Seti's Sarcophagus. I plan to go back and look in more detail.
I've learned more watching your channel than I did in my western art class in college. I've enjoyed every video you've produced. I'm looking forward to your video on Vermeer.

I’ve benefited immensely from your outstanding “Great Art Explained” series. This new one is just as enjoyable, informative and as always, perfectly produced. I’ll be seeking out London’s lesser known galleries when I visit as a result.
Thank you. I plan to visit London on Monday & Tuesday if the tube strikes are over, and you’ve inspired me to visit (and revisit) these great collections.
A splendid debut video for the series! I didn’t know what to expect, really, but I certainly could not expect an examination of those three art collections about which I knew absolutely nothing. Thanks so much, James and Joanne!
Thank you James Payne for your interesting storytelling of the masterpieces you introduce to us, I found it interesting to follow you in your conversation. Thank you for your work!
Your videos are very educative & gripping .. I watch each one fully, with never a thought of skipping crossing my mind, sometimes more than once.. thank you 🙏🏻.
Spectacular!! Already loving this series. I’ve never heard of Canaletto and A Rake's Progress, and was quite intrigued :D I think showing the work collectively in this manner is very efficient in gaining insights while also switches things up from the original Great Art Explained series!
These are just so wonderful. I feel nourished when I watch them. I am so grateful to you. There is so much work involved in making them. Please know that these light up my day. Thank you!
Next year, I will be taking my grandson on a trip to London and (because of this video) found that The Wallace Collection has family (kid) themed introductory material. I am so excited to send it to him to get him intrigued by the art he will see. I love your channel! I didnt know anything of art until my late 40s and took art history classes in my 50s and love learning!
Indeed-this superb video gives us art lovers a glimpse into “the fascinating stories” behind these lesser known galleries, these patrons of the art, their art collection, and the legacy they made by bequeathing their art collection as a trust, as a lasting legacy to benefit culture by promoting the appreciation of art by the public at large. Couldn’t help but admire the story revealed here of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, who is not only wealthy and privileged but is also a distinguished jurist, highly cultured and possessed an acute moral and social conscience by supporting the long struggle for the abolition of slavery in the British empire. Excellent analysis of the pieces by Vermeer, Hals, Rembrandt and more. Looking forward to these series. Many thanks for sharing your masterful knowledge and deep appreciation of art. It enriches the spirit.

This feels like something that would be produced HBO, but instead the creators release it for free on youtube so morons like me can appreciate it while eating snacks after a night of heavy drinking with the boys, please never change, this is my favorite thing ever
I'm planning my next vacation based on the galleries/paintings I've learned about in these videos. You make understanding/appreciating art so accessible.
I came across the Wallace Collection as I was walking around my workplace in central London. It trully is a great place, who impresses even those not so art-enthused. I was very happy to see it featured on this channel. Sir Joan Soane Museum is the next one on my London art bucket list

I find the story of Samuel Courtauld and his own collection and his contributions to the National Gallery really interesting.
