Great Art Cities Explained: London
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 тра 2024
- In the first of a new series, James Payne and Joanne Shurvell combine their love of Art and Travel, as they look at less well known museums in cities around the world.
In "Great Art Cities Explained: London", we look at three museums whose collections were started by Mavericks. The Sir John Soane's Museum, The Wallace Collection and Kenwood House.
We discuss works by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Canaletto and Hogarth.

Amen
I literally had a Bank of America ad on this video
Word homie - preach 😘
When I lived in London I visited Kenwood House every weekend to admire the artworks you mention here and to take a coffee in the garden. Thanks for taking me back!
I never realised just how much you can learn about people or cities just from art. This channel truly is a gift to us all.
Well said! This channel has completely changed my view/opinion on art!
Great expansion into the "Great Art Explained" universe! Can't wait for more!

Good Sir, your channel has given me more than my Art Appreciation class in college...and for FREE
You could do a series on Great Art Patrons Explained as well. Medici, Royalty, and Guggenheim, many others. It would really tie in a lot of artists and locations.
Yes! and Barnes and Theo Van Gogh. I really like this idea :)
Excellent idea!
Isabella Stewart Gardiner
@@annieseaside and Henry Clay Frick!
And don't forget American emigree Gertrude Stein in Paris who fostered the local painters.
This is a comment to help The Algorithm find this video. Thanks James!
Thanks 🙏
This is the second video I watch after Paris and I am overwhelmed by how great they are. They make the viewers better persons, they teach so much. Thank you cert very much.
This channel is probably the richest and the most valuable one on UA-cam! I cant thank you enough for bringing out such priceless pieces of knowledge into light!
I'm always impressed with the production value not to mention the information and Mr. Payne's grasp of the material. I'm a patreon and I love this channel.
Thanks so much for your support 🙏
To see further little known art museum collections would be a privilege. Please bless us by sharing more of your Great Art Explained series.
This one almost made me cry at the end. Love this channel so much, thank you.
I finally travelled to London, and I visited the Soane Museum. "A rake's progress" is available for 10 minutes every day at 2 PM. It's magical, but Hogarth's "Humours of an Election" is sublime (you have more time to admire the details). Worth the visit 100%
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the info 🙏
I have recently discovered your a great art series. When I was in my teens every Saturday morning I would bid my parents a farewell and take the Subway to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was one of the most incredible art experiences of my life and have visited dozens of Museum since then in U.S. and
Europe.
Thank you for reminding us how important art is to all of us.
I'm so overflown with emotions upon finishing watching this. Sir, your interpretation is exquisite. Your videos are a form of philanthropy themselves; without them, I would never be elevated and stumble into the beauty of the art world as a layman. Good fortune to you!
Thanks 🙏
I never was much one for "great art", not being exposed to it much during my youth...and I probably will never travel to see any of these galleries or paintings in person...but I come away from your wonderful videos feeling enriched and satisfied that I have had the opportunity to "see" such works. Better yet, in the privacy of my own room without the crowds jostling me for position or the expenses involved. Thank you once again for an excellent piece that brings such beauty to my humble abode.
Please leave a comment (even a short one) and "like" the video. It really helps promote the channel on UA-cam. I appreciate it! James
Anything to help this amazing channel! 😊✨✨✨
National Museum of Wales "Gwendoline & Margaret Davis Collection"
Wonderful - learned more about some of my favourite museums and works of art!
thanks Sarah! Paris is next, then New York.
Good grief - the dozens of times I have been for walks on Hampstead Heath and walked right past Kenwood House never knowing it was full of incredible paintings- I could kick myself! Also, I visited the Soane back in the 1990s when studying in London. It is so memorable and wonderful that last year I took my family to see it. However, I had no idea that The Rakes Progress paintings were housed inside. Finally, the Wallace collection- that will be next on my places to visit when I next go to London. Superb video, as always!
Still enthralled, still learning from every show.
This channel is great. Thanks for another video
James, any video you put out is an instant watch from me. thank you for the consistent high quality content!
You could make these like 6 hours long and I’d still be glued to the screen the whole time
great idea, brilliantly executed.

Dude ... I do not compliment people much, but you are the BEST presenter I've heard. Clear, concise, interesting. I grew to like Waldemar Januszczak because he makes some really interesting points, but he's a gregarious.
Thanks 🙏
Great choice of subjects, thanks for going into detail about people like Caneletto.
The way you bring our attention to details like the cascading light or buzzing guitar string is incredible.
I have been to the Soane's Museum in London and it is amazing. What an eclectic collection. I was amazed at the art and Seti's Sarcophagus. I plan to go back and look in more detail.
I had the pleasure of already visiting Sir John Soane's Museum before watching this, and now I can't wait to pay a visit to the other two galleries of the video, thank you once again James and Joanne :)
thanks, Tom! Our next art cities video (Paris) will be out Monday (earlier to Patrons)!
Your channel is a gift to mankind. Thank you so much for your work.
Wonderful expansion of the channel. Can’t wait for my town NYC to be featured. Studied abroad in London and this episode is such a reminder of what I love about the art in that city. Bravo.
I have no requests for specific galleries etc, just that you continue to provide such fantastic content. Genuinely appreciated.
Thanks 🙏
This is such a beautifully high brow channel on a low brow platform. This feels like something that would be produced HBO, but instead the creators release it for free on youtube so morons like me can appreciate it while eating snacks after a night of heavy drinking with the boys, please never change, this is my favorite thing ever
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your works keep my soul alive with Art!
Your series videos are of the highest quality. Please keep producing them. I'd love to watch more "less famous museums" series.
My Realistic Art❤❤😍👉ua-cam.com/video/dhN4VgRdj8Y/v-deo.html
Love these videos. They should be shown in schools as they're very informative and pack in so much within the time frame.
So much to see in this video❤️ one of my favorites so far, it felt like I got to go to the museums in a small way
The combination of quality & passion poured into these videos is staggering. Thank you for this beautiful channel.
Wow. Just wow. How is this show not on Netflix? Your narration, the editing, the sound design. Love it all. 😀 and you are awesome.
Thank you for another great video. Your channel is the only one I watch without a fail every single time!
Now we need a Great Fashion Explained!!!
Thanks so much for introducing Canaletto's paintings at the Wallace collection in this VDO. I have never heard of this artist before. His paintings are really exquisite.
What a gift your videos are, James! Thank you; I hope you will continue to enrich our lives.
What an upgrade! The intro does not look cheap. Bravo!
Your type of work is very rare to see nowadays. True, unadulterated education. Please keep it up and continue to expand.
I really enjoyed my pre-COVID travels to London, I saw great art and appreciated the culture.
Santa Fe, New Mexico has several small museums and galleries with excellent collections within perfect buildings. Three days was not enough for us as art lovers and artists. Very much appreciate your work and channel. Thank you!
I love New Mexico!
Brilliant as always! Well done James and Joanne!
I could listen to this for hours, thank you.
This channel is progressively expanding my mind. One of my favourite on YT. Thank you so much sir
Another excellent & very insightful video!
By far my favourite channel😁
Many thanks!
Art enriches my complex, emotional, evolved simian brain.
As do documentaries like this. Thank you.
Thank you very much, I agree with those who want a video about Vermeer. We need it!
I can't believe I've never seen Laughing Cavalier before and how wild that it was made in 1624, there's something very modern about it
Next year, I will be taking my grandson on a trip to London and (because of this video) found that The Wallace Collection has family (kid) themed introductory material. I am so excited to send it to him to get him intrigued by the art he will see. I love your channel! I didnt know anything of art until my late 40s and took art history classes in my 50s and love learning!
That’s great! Enjoy!
These are just so wonderful. I feel nourished when I watch them. I am so grateful to you. There is so much work involved in making them. Please know that these light up my day. Thank you!
The selection of music pieces for your videos is astounding!
Keep it up!
Glasgow is an amazing art city with many wonderful galleries. Kelvingrove, GOMA, the Huntarian, the Lighthouse, the Glasgow School of Art itself before the tragic fire. Edinburgh also has several wonderful art galleries.
That was great I used to hang out at the Wallace collection years ago, thank you for the stories!
This channel deserves much more followers
Thank you so much for this video! I was actually visiting London last week, so after watching this I went to see the Wallace Collection. It was fantastic and I wouldn't have known about it if not for this video.
Great that you found the video interesting and useful. Our idea was to let people know about lesser known museums and highlights within. The Wallace collection is wonderful.
I'm blown away again, always a fascination to be here
Love love LOVE this, James! Can’t wait for Paris, Amsterdam and Firenze! 💙💙
Nice collaboration Joanne and James!
Thanks 🙏
I've learned more watching your channel than I did in my western art class in college. I've enjoyed every video you've produced. I'm looking forward to your video on Vermeer.
Great art cities explained. Very excellent. Now I need to go to England for like 2 years. Please make more so I know where to go. Thank you for your knowledge.
Wonderful! This is a very good introduction to three of London's treasured collections. They are free to all.
James, this channel is *chef’s kiss*!!!!
You've enriched my soul today.
Thank you.
Sir John Soane’s House is my favourite place.
Nowadays, when journeys are limited, it is wonderful to see such great pieces of art on your channel. Thank you:). Greetings from Poland😊
I love the evolution and excellence of this channel. Thank you for the brilliant work.
Thanks for your continued support Jason!
Words cannot express how much I love this channel. Thank you. Just…thank you.
Thanks 🙏
Your last words were absolute gold.
The Wallace collection is my favourite across all of London's museums I know. Massively overlooked by tourist crowds and has a super nice café. It's worth noting the Wallace fountain present in dozens of countries and having one by the main entrance of the museum.
What a lovely ending of social call! Thank you for this trip to London!
I really love The Swing painting. Especially all those hidden meanings inside.
So beautifully done! Thank you so much!
Took 2 art history classes in university. Thanks for keeping the flame alive! Amazing as usual
Just had this channel show up in my recommended and I can't get enough. This is maybe my favorite video so far and I hope there are more cities videos to come!
Paris next
A splendid debut video for the series! I didn’t know what to expect, really, but I certainly could not expect an examination of those three art collections about which I knew absolutely nothing. Thanks so much, James and Joanne!
Thanks 🙏
I loved this, it's insane how informative it can be, touching on what's important while still captivating people with no previous knowledge on art education
I'd love to see more on other art houses, maybe more on art collectors or the medici family, florence
This channel is a real gem keep it up
Short entertaining and informative video featuring three fabulous London-based art collections and the philanthropists who put them together for us to enjoy.
Very interesting… thank you. I’ve been trying as I can to gather an appreciation of art that I missed in college.
I really liked the video. I honestly think that it is a great new project. The end depressed me a little, though; knowing that nowadays art is viewed more as an investment, being stacked on each other
Enjoyed your 1st episode of "Great Art Cities explained" immensely.
Thank you~
I wonder if you'll make your way to museums in Seoul,Korea one day👏🤭

I’ve benefited immensely from your outstanding “Great Art Explained” series. This new one is just as enjoyable, informative and as always, perfectly produced. I’ll be seeking out London’s lesser known galleries when I visit as a result.
Oh my god! The content of your channel is amazing but can we take a moment to appreciate the editing? Your effort in highlighting the subject you’re talking about & finding just the right music for the artworks. Chapeau!
This series is so amazing. I really enjoy watching them, and I feel smarter after viewing.
Youre videos have been a highlight for me lately, on the way to school. So glad to see youre new upload
Your videos are very educative & gripping .. I watch each one fully, with never a thought of skipping crossing my mind, sometimes more than once.. thank you 🙏🏻.
I had no idea there are over 800 art galleries just in London. I really enjoyed this one, it was tour de force of true masterpieces. Really looking forward to your Vermeer vid. Everytime I see one of his paintings i just think "wow". Not very technical I know...but that is how his works make me feel. Great stuff GAE.
My favorite channel is back and with another masterpiece! Thank you, sir.

What an absolutely phenomenal video. Your channel is a true gift.
Wonderfull! I cannot wait for the rest of this series.

St Louis Art Museum? It's free andclosest to me. Your channel has created such an interest in art for me I decided to go there for my birthday a couple weeks ago. They even had a Rothko painting!
Indeed-this superb video gives us art lovers a glimpse into “the fascinating stories” behind these lesser known galleries, these patrons of the art, their art collection, and the legacy they made by bequeathing their art collection as a trust, as a lasting legacy to benefit culture by promoting the appreciation of art by the public at large. Couldn’t help but admire the story revealed here of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, who is not only wealthy and privileged but is also a distinguished jurist, highly cultured and possessed an acute moral and social conscience by supporting the long struggle for the abolition of slavery in the British empire. Excellent analysis of the pieces by Vermeer, Hals, Rembrandt and more. Looking forward to these series. Many thanks for sharing your masterful knowledge and deep appreciation of art. It enriches the spirit.
Thank you. I plan to visit London on Monday & Tuesday if the tube strikes are over, and you’ve inspired me to visit (and revisit) these great collections.
Please do more videos like this one! I loved this, I loved hearing the story behind how collections and museums came to be and there are so many in London that could be explored. I find the story of Samuel Courtauld and his own collection and his contributions to the National Gallery really interesting.
I came across the Wallace Collection as I was walking around my workplace in central London. It trully is a great place, who impresses even those not so art-enthused. I was very happy to see it featured on this channel. Sir Joan Soane Museum is the next one on my London art bucket list
