Old Traveller hand here, but I never paid attention or knew about fiction in the universe. I recently found Agent of the Imperium for Kindle, and was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for the overview!

Jefferson S. did at least one Traveller article for The Dragon magazine back in the 80's.

I was recently introduced the the The Dumarest Saga by Edwin Charles Tubb. The first book The Winds of Gath was published in 1967. I hightly suspect these books inspired Marc Miller as much of the wording is exactly Traveller. People in the book are refered to as Travellers and there is high and low passages etc. I was taken back by how they are almos the same like it taken right from the books. I would highly recommend reading them. Or even audio book them.

Martin Dougherty wrote a Traveller novel called Shadow of the Storm that is worth reading. However it is out of print, even as a Kindle read on Amazon. This may mean that Mongoose is going to (re)publish it.
It's a good book, set in the Solomani Confederation. It ends rather like a sequel is anticipated, so maybe we will see that.

ROBERT HAFT (In falsetto, New York accent): Remember -- If you paid full price, you didn't get it at Crown Books!
I actually worked at a couple of their stores way back in the day. One of my first jobs. It sucked pretty bad.

I highly recommend Starwell by Alexei Panshin copyright 1968. Very Travelleresque and a very enjoyable read. Anthony Villiers is the proto-typical Noble Dilettante character. There are two other books in the series: The Thurb Revolution, and Masque World. I have never found a copy of the Thurb Revolution but I have vague recollections that Masque World was not quite on par with Starwell.
