I've always seen the SDF main cannon firing sequence in Booby Trap to be explained by the curvature of the earth. The trap was triggered to fire the moment the enemy was within its cross hairs when they were approaching earth or in earth orbit. The cannon is so powerful, it vaporized part of the island, and countless amount of ocean surface and still had enough energy to destroy multiple enemy vessels out in space.
Stealing is such a bad joke. SDF1 itself was stolen by its original crew to break free from an oppressive regime and the humans merely picked up the pieces and rebuilt it. And SDF-1 brought humans together and they made weapons not to kill one another but to protect the human species. The all female bridge crew and the mostly male fighter pilots reminds me of the Battle of Britain where a mostly female British radar crew cooperate with the mostly male pilots to intercept the Luftwaffe.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zentradi I kept thinking of en-tropy ... still, there are a bunch of valid ways to say it. Maybe one of the voice actors slurred the line and Lore picked up on that.
I'm not going to harp on the Zentradi pronunciation. What I will state is, that as a Military Vet, I know that the majority of Military Bases do have a large civilian population that builds up around them. This is because the bases generate income in both direct and indirect methods. It would make sense that there would be a large population around the wreck of the SDF 1 because of the base. Plus, a lot of the individuals that did move to the island were probably dispossessed by the recent World War. A very good potential example of this is the Minmei family. They are Chinese and living on the island (Running a restaurant.) Another thought is that, given the significance of the discoveries on the SDF1, the UN used the opportunity to create a rally point for humanity. Space has always been a uniting force for humanity. Just look at the Lunar Landing as an example. For the voice acting, please keep in mind that Robotech is essentially a redubbing of the Japanese series Macross (Hence the name of the ship). At the time of broadcast, the voice acting community in the US was not on par with what Japan had or the US has now. Plus the characters had to be renamed and events had to be edited to fit the target audience. There are some events that occur later in the series that had to be softened or edited out to make US Broadcast. Also, the incidents with Rick get put on the backburner for two reasons: 1) Roy was the commanding officer at the location and 2) Events unfold that require every available hand within the next few minutes. Also an FYI- Roy was an employee of Rick's Dad at an Air Circus before becoming a fighter pilot. And I know that the series seems pretty black and white at the moment, but your video covers maybe the first 5-10 minutes of the very first episode. Things get a heck of a lot more grey as the series progresses.
"Zentropi" you okay there Lore? Too many frog girl memes getting to you? also that moral dilemma you hint at the end and the "finder beam" is super ironic considering whats revealed about the Zentropi later in the show.
Ok this is good now please do proper Macross lore please. Also in the original the ship was originally designated as ASS 1 or Alien Space Ship one( before being named SDF-1 as a mobile fortress part was its purpose as a mobile base for military operations). Also the city was actually like the one from Project Manhattan but without the secrecy. Yes stop with Robotech and just do SDF Macross. Though a loving term used for the Bridge crew of the Macross is Bridge Bunnies yes I know. The term actually did evolve to simply refer to just background bridge crew with no narrative purpose( Macross does solve it quickly) though the Discovery's bridge crew can be considered such.
@@LoreReloaded hey Venessa( the radar operator) , Shammy ( called Sammy in the Robotech dub) and Kim the two internal coms officers do actually do a narrative service as they get Viewers up to speed on how the Macross is every episode and they have their moments of character unlike Discovery where all the bridge crew besides Lorka , Burnahm and the science officer are all just bridge bunnies aka useless pretty faces on screen.
The SDF-1's "booby trap", firing the main gun. The shot is traveling ABSOLUTELY straight and so looks like it it drilling into the ocean and the curving up into space. It is was actually one the best "I never thought of that" tropes in Anime.
Interesting seeing you take a crack at this series -- i don't envy you getting deluged with the inevitable Macross vs Robotech thing. What made you think to go with calling Lisa a yandere, if you don't mind me asking? If anything i would have pegged her as tsundere. Regardless, looking forward to more.
A favorite from my childhood. I love Robotech although I will say the story from Macross was better. If you haven't already seen it, check out the Macross: Do You Remember Love movie. It encapsulates the entire Macross series into about two hours of brutal war and beautiful hand-drawn animation.
Actually the movie is just that in lore of Macross. The tv show holds the most sway lore wise( except most character looks). Yeah history of the movie in short is its a Shitpost to Gundam about its compilation films of its first series.
Harmony Gold asides I do still have fond place in my heart for Robotech. Just wish we could see more Macross outside of Japan; however ADV was able to have a more faithful dub of Macross and it was awesome (ADV was able to get the original Japanese voice actress for Minmay to dub herself in English)
@@TheDjbz here's a playlist of SDF Macross and its movie( think the movie as a movie of the events with updated characters and UN spacey designs most Zentradi machines are accurate except the one of the two power armors) if anything is different from the series its the movie being a docudrama. ua-cam.com/play/PLftMc2X00jhHXiiOSD-LTswS6C2mcEOPK.html
Two actually. Battlecry, a veritech/fighter sort of game which was based on the Macross Saga, and Invasion, which was a first/third-person shooter based on The New Generation
Would that be Robotech: Battlecry? Not a bad game for its day. I had it on XBox. The controls were intuitive, the gameplay was reasonably satisfying (if a bit repetitive), the cel-shading graphics measure up about as well today as they did when it came out in 2002, and they got a bunch of the original voice actors, soundtrack, and sound effects, which was a really nice touch you don't see a lot today. That said, it had some structure issues that needed a bit more work to iron out. The one that really stuck with me was that you could unlock different Veritech fighters that had different stats for armor, firepower, and handling, which was cool - but there was no between-mission hangar where you could switch up your fighter like the Rogue Leader or Ace Combat games had. Whichever Veritech you picked, you'd best get comfortable, because you were stuck in it until you saved, quit, and reloaded.
tba113 Yes! I sorta remember that scene flying over the crashed ship island thingy in the tutorial. Probably rented the game also never heard of the show.
To be fair, the Zentradi stole their ships and the proto culture that powered them from the "Robotech Masters" and the ship did crash on Earth as a derelict.
Dude, I've been into Robotech ever since junior high. if you really want to dive into the franchise, you need to read the novels, it really fleshes as a whole.
Lore Reloaded My recommendation: Robotech the series (Zentrati, with two very sharp t’s.) or Macross (Japanese Version). You wouldn’t watch the Tailand dub & re-design of Star Trek for your breakdowns, right?
Your brave for trying to make sense of a story written over top of another story. Robotech had some great moments, but they are almost universally due to Macross... Which still had a pretty off the rails story at times, but like at Hideo Kojima as an example... A lot of Japanese 'writing' is rather like that at times. However Robotech does add a lot of twists just to try to link the Macross story into a 'arc' made from the animation work of three different groups. Things like 'Robotechnology' are attempts by the US team to link the three series' into a singular plot. Robotech was fine for me as a kid, but Macross won my heart as an adult. Especially when we move into Macross Plus, 7, Zero (which is arguably the best of them), and Frontier (I've never seen 'Macross Delta', so I'm not including that).
If I remember rightly they decide to declare war as they figure if the ship doesn’t like them they must be evil. I can think of several issues with that, especially given you spent ten years poking around the ship you could have accidentally linked the guns to the vending machines or maybe the ship you are playing with came from a evil race?
"Stole"? You might want to look up the basics of maritime salvage law. Being abandoned by its crew, and not marked (With a buoy, beacon, or similar.) for recovery, SDF-1 would be considered derelict. ie: "In terms of maritime law, derelict is considered property abandoned on navigable waters which has no hope of being recovered, or sine spe recuperandi, and no expectation of it being returned to its owner, or sine animo revertendi." In other words, and especially after 10 years abandoned with no effort by the Zentradi to claim her, SDF-1 was legal salvage.
Yep, it is hard to claim they stole the ship when it crashed with no survivors, salvage rights would apply. Of course, when a massively powerful fleet shows up to claim it, the fine points of salvage vs theft do become rather irrelevant.
It is also interesting that the Zentradi found the idea that the natives could salvage the ship to be incredible, they being mere Micronians. But then from a race that doesn't even know how to maintain their own ships, I don't think their opinion was all that significant. I always found the Micronian thing to be rather interesting, since the Robotech Masters and their race would also be Micronians, so this sort of prejudice doesn't seem to make sense. It is really another vestige left over from the original Macross story. Actually, if I remember right the SDF-1 in the original Macross was not a Zentradi vessel they were coming to recover but the wreckage of another alien race that the Zendtradi were fighting. That race was never revealed though.
I choose the attack you for the Zentropi mistake rather than the comment about the Bridge Bunnies for reasons that make no sense to me. lol. Howeer i would recommend the original SDF Macross from Japan rather that the 1985 Robotech as the story in the original is much more consistent. Cant wait for the next episode.
Zentraedi not Zentrafi. hehehehe I love Robotech, 100 times a lot better than STD. specially the folding space to move from one part of the galaxy to the next. no spinning like Discovery. I too always wonder an all women as bridge crew. maybe Capt. Global wanted & enjoy the view. hehehe Both Lisa Hayes & Claudia Grant we're Lt.Commanders with Lisa 1st officer & Claudia 2nd officer. Roy Fokker was Rick's bestfriend, Mentor & your right almost like an older brother. Keep up the Robotech videos, I enjoy the breakdowns.
If you think Super Dimensional Fortress or SDF is an odd name then you should learn the in-universe original name: Alien Space Ship - 01 or ASS-01. It's probably for the best that they didn't name the series after that one.
No as they have to deal with copyrights from Japan still. As even though the Robotech series uses the Macross designs they have to design from scratch everything.
@@LoreReloaded its possible, the reflex Canon in the technical data is called a converging beam Canon so they do not exactly explain this, it's fired between two booms "converging" into one beam, however it has smaller converging beam canons that do not work this way, But always saw it as its firing through the planet/ocean to strike zendraedi battle ships in orbit on the other side of the planet
Lore Reloaded it can, but not to star trek’s level of depth This 80s Anime Analysis that intense would defeat the fun of it It’s basically Japanese Top gun We can’t hold top gun on any realistic bar
And maybe before you do this next video you can figure out the Robotech lore which pretty much the majority of it also falls along with Macross. And how Harmony Gold butchered Macross and the other two series used for Robotech but the Lore is pretty spot on.
@@LoreReloaded basically Harmony Gold tried Voltroning Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeda all because they wanted syndication. Macross was already a successful show in Japan so while Macek( rest in peace) simply wanted to translate and bring to the west Harmony Gold instead pushed the merging of three completely different shows( Macross and Southern Cross are from the Super Dimensional trilogy meta series. The last of the trilogy being Orguss which was thankfully saved from HG) and mashed together. So in essence after the Macross arc the whole series falls apart due to major animation differences( and terrible logic between arcs that really shows how it is).
Glad to see you are covering one of my favorite series even if it is a pop idol soap opera in space, and if you do decide to do the whole series wait till you get to the hot mess that is Macross 7. Also the pronunciation is Zentradi not Zentropi.
Actually as of me watching Macross 7 its not as bad as people think. Ok other than Millia being a matchmaking mom and her slightly lecherous bodyguard. Just don't call Millia Oujo that is a bad thing for your health.
I suggest you try Macross also, you should stick to the series because the movies are all alternate universe... So the order is Macross Zero, SDF Macross, Macross 7, Macross Plus, Frontier & Finally Delta tough everything after SDF Macross never got a english dub thanks to Harmony Gold... x-x (yes I think I did the chronological order perfectly, a bit sure about 7 and plus but the order of those two does not matter)
Yup. Your good on the timeline. Macross DYRL is a literal movie in canon so yes required watch as you'll miss details in Macross 7. Also fun fact in episode 28 and 36 you can see a mech similar to the Orguss get destroyed and in later Macross series Orguss gets referenced more than once( Macross Delta has a very big one in a certain year and weapon used).
One of my favorite franchises. So happy your doing a series. But in all hosetly the issue is that the series was badly dubbed from the japanese. Macross II was allot better and Macross PLUS was just awesomesauce Also honorable mention of Macross Zero
I'll post this here in case people who care didn't see it on the page with the livestream. Hooo boy, Macross &/or Robotech "Lore". Although I prefer Macross, you are better off going with Robotech for what we in the West think of as "Canon Lore". It has been stated by Shoji Kawamori that all the different Macross series are essentially TV dramatizations of events that happened in the Macross Universe. Think of it like there is "Canon" WWII. We have shows like Band of Brothers, Hogan's Heroes, Combat, Rat Patrol, Black Sheep Squadron, Saving Private Ryan, & Tora Tora Tora, etc. that are based on that "Canon" event. That is how the creators of the Macross series treat their different series & why there seem to be some discrepancies between them. Every Macross series is a "TV series" or "movie" from that Universe that is dramatizing events that happened at that time. MacrossWorld forums might be a good place to find the "Official" Timeline of events & people/mecha production & those are the only "Canon" things. For example, there WAS a Space War 1, we know the dates of certain events & the names & ages of people involved & when certain Technologies came online, everything else is technically dramatization. Robotech was made from 3 unrelated Anime series because the TV people over here wanted a minimum 65 episodes to hit the magical syndication limit for that time (they got 85). Harmony Gold/Carl Macek created a timeline where each show was a different generation of people on earth fighting off related alien invasions with some characters being related to characters from earlier in Robotech. There was a series of Robotech novels by 2 authors calling themselves "Jack McKinney". The novels took some liberties with things & made up their own stuff to fill things out. They were the bases of the Southern Cross character Anatole Leonard being a sick bastard bad guy. In interviews with the voice actor, who also helped write some of the script, Leonard was supposed to be a Patton like hard ass but one of the good guys. In the original Southern Cross "Leonard" was a villain, but in the Robotech version they added dialogue & some scenes where he sent reinforcements to help. Most fans have taken the novel's point of view. (Side note there is a small but hard core group of Southern Cross fans that are really touchy about this. I sympathize with them although they probably hate my guts for being a Macross fanboy.) The Robotech Comics after the Comico run were pretty much given a completely free hand to make up whatever they wanted, especially in the 90's before they stopped being put out. I have NOT read the new comics so I don't know what the state of them is.
The thing with Shoji Kowamori's statement it only follows to SDF Macross and its movie. As he also stated Do You Remember Love was a big joke of what Gundam did with Mobile Suit Gundam's compilation films. As in later series both SDF Macross and DYRL are mentioned( in Macross 7 a member of Battle 7's bridge crew mentions Do You Remember Love as a movie about Minmei and in Macross Delta one member of Walkure mentions having all of the Minmei Files tv show( all 36 episodes). So while later Macross series are fully fleshed out SDF Macross and DYRL are a mixed topic( personally by latter accounts in the series events happened like in the TV show but with character designs from DYRL).
Technically once said ship crashed and was very much fubar it was salvage at that point, also the ZENTRADEI would have just glassed the humans from the start. They are basically a slave race created by another older race for only military use. Hell they don't even know how to fix or make their own tech it's all issued to them by their creators. Macross is a curious bit of anime scifi it's not Universal Century Gundam level good but it's a gem in it's own right. Certainly a different take on first contact to be sure.
Ok the Zentradi only would Glass earth if some very specific thing happens on their fleet. Other than that if the ship didn't shoot at them earth would have been left alone.
I think it's because people in USA watched it in this form and it stuck, sort of like 'Road Warrior' instead of 'Mad Max 2'. Going for the original was an extra step not many chose to do and even if they did it was often way later, so now when nostalgia has a chance to kick in it's usually for the thing they saw first. But it might be a possibility later on - after a few vids on Robotech, to see an additional summary of what the recut adaptation changed.
Yeah part 2 and 3 are not that good. Also the only reason Robotech is remembered is because of Part 1 the redubbed Macross part. So tell me again why Harmony Gold is using its rights to SDF Macross to embargo a whole franchise from coming to the west to the point the creators of said franchise actively saying Harmony Gold is terrible.
Please move over to the Macross side of the series, it's far more consistent, and you don't have to worry about Harmony Gold taking other Anime series and branding it as "RoboTech".
The Sci-Fi geek in me is all “YAY” but the extreme anime watched every Macross series in Japanese with subtitles weeb is “HERRASY”. Why can’t I like and dislike at the same time? I take it the “mistakes” I noticed were mainly due to using that English three unconnected animes mashup version as your source?
I feel the same the macross purist I am now conflicts with my childhood robotech obsession.. Love both basically, I freaking love the body armor of the southern cross and the alpha and beta fighters of new Gen.. And especially cyclones
Hey..... My, at the time. 31 year old Mother watched this show. WHY????????? "A Black Woman is 3rd in Command of this Ship and has a White (I know he's Japanese in the original Macross show) Boy Friend?????!?!??!" (My Mom: 1983) She Also asked..... How many People has to die before Star Trek's Lt. Uhura can take Command of the Enterprise??? To which one of Friends Seriously Said, "At Least 90% of the crew and ALL the MEN".(1984) All this occurred in a town named Marked Tree Arkansas.
Okay, here I go: 1. Your analysis needs a better analysis. 2. They did not steal the SDF-1, they found it. Earthbound rules: "Finders Keepers-Losers Weepers." 3. They fixed the ship at their own expense, so it is theirs now. 4. Humanity did not fail in this instance. 5. The ship was built for far and due to human modifications it did wonders in combat against the beings that created it. I could continue, however, this reply might not mean to much if it is not responded to.

@@LoreReloaded 1. Irony, is just what is its 2. An inside joke on a company or otherwise only works when it's funny. 3. A reply is sort of reiterating a point...ok. 4. They...didn't. 5. They lost some battles short term and some conflicts are Pyrrhic victories.
@@LoreReloaded Multiple comments. We like them, however, when we get too many of them, responding is tricky. Hopefully if you receive these you will respond again. If so, I'll try to reply even faster.
you could do some Macross lore instead of this "robotech" - after all it is a Japanese anime, and not an American one - no matter how much harmony gold would want it to be so
Eh, claiming salvage rights on a derelict ship isn't wrong to do. The existence of the ship itself, or even the fact that it was built by aliens, weren't the top-secret part; from what I remember, that would be the fact that said aliens were twenty-foot-tall giants who might come looking for the wreck sooner rather than later. Having a new project to focus on, one that could open the stars to humanity and solve energy crises with revolutionary new technologies,, especially when the world had been locked in the death spiral of a third world war? That sounds like just the thing to rally humanity in one of our darkest hours and pull us back from the brink. Focusing on that project not for its own sake, but because there's strong evidence that a fleet of alien warships crewed by angry titans may show up any day now? That puts a... somewhat _different_ spin on things. Especially when said war fleet _does_ show up, and pretty much just starts shooting.
@@LoreReloaded Ahh, no worries. I really did enjoy the video, and Harmony Gold deserves all the fun that can be made of them. Ultimately, it's 80's translations at their finest.
Mmmm something ain't right here.... Oh yeah it's the Robotech version, not macross. It gets confusing sometimes.... The show is certainly better than Gen 1 DragonBall, but I would not recommend watching Robotech unless you are already a big fan of macross as I am. Also you gotta work on the pronunciation of zentradi....
To the current sjw types robotech /macross should be seen as ground breaking or progressive, Claudia Grant's inter racial relationship with Roy Foccker for example, re: Lisa Hayes she is the classic stick in the mud all business military woman her father is an RDF Admiral, so it SHOULDN'T be an sjw thing, but that will not stop Some. later iterations of macross had gay characters and even the later robotech saga (the new generation) had Lancer/yellow dancer a trans/drag character who is pop star. More or less accurate on the base part as it was basically the Manhattan Project of the 21st century in Macross but without the secrecy.

Yea i saw that.. Japan was classy in the day..wasnt it
@@LoreReloaded hey Venessa( the radar operator) , Shammy ( called Sammy in the Robotech dub) and Kim the two internal coms officers do actually do a narrative service as they get Viewers up to speed on how the Macross is every episode and they have their moments of character unlike Discovery where all the bridge crew besides Lorka , Burnahm and the science officer are all just bridge bunnies aka useless pretty faces on screen.
The SDF-1's "booby trap", firing the main gun. The shot is traveling ABSOLUTELY straight and so looks like it it drilling into the ocean and the curving up into space. It is was actually one the best "I never thought of that" tropes in Anime.

Wasn’t their a robotech game on the ps2?
Battlecry was Buggy and basic with bad difficulty scaling. There was a Macross game for PS2 that functions way better.
You should do Starblazers at some point, Lore.
And Seaquest. I will never stop asking for Seaquest

@@SchneeflockeMonsoon this is robotech the series..
Holy crap Robotech Lore!!
Delta is ok if not a little rushed.
HOLY FUCKING SHIT! You're doing Robotech??!!?!?!?!???
It was a joke at harmony golds expense
More Robotech please
Actually Commander Roy Faulker was the CAG on ship
Zentraedi not Zentrafi. hehehehe I love Robotech, 100 times a lot better than STD. specially the folding space to move from one part of the galaxy to the next. no spinning like Discovery. Well they are operators. And that is just a small CIC of the Macross. There's more than just that room for operations.
Admiral Gloval would be proud of you KNOW YOUR ENEMY IS THE 1ST STEP IN DEFEATING THEM🤣
If you think Super Dimensional Fortress or SDF is an odd name then you should learn the in-universe original name: Alien Space Ship - 01 or ASS-01. It's probably for the best that they didn't name the series after that one.
Macross Zero does refer to the SDF-1 by its ASS-1 name.
I was gonna make a joke about Harmony Gold, but you beat me to it.
Also, you stay away from Lisa. She's a red headed goddess!
No that's Shammy( Sammy in the Robotech dub) is the redhead. Lisa is a brunette.
I retract my prior statement on further review and replace it with, "She's a brunette goddess!"
it would be cool if they did a live action version of the cartoon.
No as they have to deal with copyrights from Japan still. As even though the Robotech series uses the Macross designs they have to design from scratch everything.

Actually more teen audiences by the original version. Similar to Gundam. Especially with Max and Fokker with some of their antics.
And maybe before you do this next video you can figure out the Robotech lore which pretty much the majority of it also falls along with Macross. And how Harmony Gold butchered Macross and the other two series used for Robotech but the Lore is pretty spot on.
...the hell is that paragraph trying to tell me?

I sympathize with them although they probably hate my guts for being a Macross fanboy.)
The Robotech Comics after the Comico run were pretty much given a completely free hand to make up whatever they wanted, especially in the 90's before they stopped being put out.
Take a shot every time you hear zentrapi
Technically once said ship crashed and was very much fubar it was salvage at that point, also the ZENTRADEI would have just glassed the humans from the start. They are basically a slave race created by another older race for only military use. Hell they don't even know how to fix or make their own tech it's all issued to them by their creators. Macross is a curious bit of anime scifi it's not Universal Century Gundam level good but it's a gem in it's own right. Certainly a different take on first contact to be sure.
It was a joke mocking harmony gold
Ok the Zentradi only would Glass earth if some very specific thing happens on their fleet. Other than that if the ship didn't shoot at them earth would have been left alone.

...Teknoman would kick robotechs ass!
why not go for the original?
I think it's because people in USA watched it in this form and it stuck, sort of like 'Road Warrior' instead of 'Mad Max 2'. Going for the original was an extra step not many chose to do and even if they did it was often way later, so now when nostalgia has a chance to kick in it's usually for the thing they saw first.
But it might be a possibility later on - after a few vids on Robotech, to see an additional summary of what the recut adaptation changed.
He knows the story behind this he just wants to torture us Macross fans a little before he does Macross proper.

Robotech is a much better show than Macross.
Yeah part 2 and 3 are not that good. Also the only reason Robotech is remembered is because of Part 1 the redubbed Macross part. Zen traa deee that's how you pronounce it
Robotech is my shit
It was a joke trying to mock harmony gold...perhaps a bad one
