When I practice drumming, this is who I think about. When I say I'm gonna be amazing at drumming one day, I just mean I'll be as half as good as Mr. Darren King over here.
Dude, I was just reacting to you reacting to your subscribers snapchats, and u frickin mentioned that u like mutemath. So I go and hear random songs about this band AND I FIND THE NUMBER 1... SHOGUN(Gave a little bleach reference too u know huehuehuehue)
Darren King a frigging human metronome. His stage presence and live energy is soooo amazing! he can drum on anything with anything and keep it so tight you just watch in awe, even if he's hanging from the ceiling. I also appreciate how simple his drumset is.. he doesn't need a thousand toms and cymbals nor a double kick to get an amazing sound from his set. He is a sick drummer. very creative and clever
Paid?! I have drumsticks with his blood on them he told me it was B positive and signed the other drumsticks when I saw him. He once gave away his bass drum pedal because he busted it on the first song. This man is not only a kind gentleman but the best drummer I've ever heard. And this is all coming from a drummer of twelve years.
beyond words. the best drummer EVER!!!! darren you continue to blow me away with your amazing skills. i saw you in concert last year at the house of blues in L.A.. best concert i have ever seen! EVER!!! love you guys and i cant wait for your new album!!!!!
We could look at it like: Well, going that fast, he didn't make a mistake, he pulled off what he was trying to do flawlessly, under the metronome, and with the same intensity as you would get live. That speaks alot of the kind of drummer he is, and how important Mute Math believes it to be sincere.
I love how he taped them to his head and then they slide right off at the end :D. haha. Great video, amazing drummer, solid performance. Can not wait for their new album/tour!!!
I usually don't post nor get into these arguements, but in the words of the great Duke Ellington, "if it sounds good, it's good." We all agree the rhythm section in this band is killer. They make great music together and that's what's so great about this band and even this video. I can't wait to hear what's going on around this build-up beat. Peace.
It's interesting that you see him smiling when he gets into it. Makes me smile when he does that. I don't really see drummers that have that attitude, but then again I don't really see that many drummers at all T.T From a serious face to a fun face then back to his cool and collected self :D
Great band, love the album odd soul. Hope to see them live soon. This is my favorite band! It sounds like they didn't hold back and just let loose in the studio.
daren you have pushed me so much further in becoming a better drummer you rock! saw you almost 2 years ago in Montgomery Alabama at OFF THE WAGON and you guys turned it inside out!!! keep it up!
man this guy is freaking amazing! He's gotta be one of my main inspirations for drumming(along with muse) i don't even know how he does half the stuff on the albums!!-he's a machine!
Sweet! 175 bpm and clean! Real clean! You sure do a lot with that a simple setup - it's pretty inspiring! I'm excited to hear the new album after all these great video logs! Happy Birthday Darren! Thank you for the wonderful music! GO MUTEMATH!!!
One of the most underrated drummers of ALL time. Technically, he is not that good, but he has insane precision and strength, and manages ghost notes so good that he makes it look very easy. Top 50, of course, not Top 20, but he is still insane.
He's in my top 5 drummers, but I do agree that he is somewhat technically lacking, though I think that's by choice mostly. If you watch some of the best prog metal drummers, jazz drummers, or a plethora of other genres, you'll see a striking difference between the complexity DK puts out there and what the most technically complex drummers can do. IMO, DK has a better style aesthetically, but I don't think I've ever seen him even stray from 4:4, forget polyrhythms. His fills are mostly straight through as well. DK doesn't compete on the same plane as most drummers, and when compared using very typical metrics, he lags behind.
Dang, I commented this a long time ago. My drumming style is completely influenced by him. And I've seen, that actually, techniques change depending on what kind of genre you play. Tempo, notation, tuning, even in some cases the type of grip you have to use changes. He's number 1 in my opinion, I grew up listening to Mutemath and now sadly I have to see how he gets separated from the band 😔
i saw them live this spring, he taped the headphones on his head then, it was great!! i really do admire him cuzz dang hes really truly actually talented ;)
About my musical tastes... I attend one of the most prestigious musical institutions in the country. I've been through theory courses, aural skills courses, music history courses, and thousands of performances of the most random, obscure genres... I listen to music on a completely different level than you do, my friend, and the number of different types of music I listen to is probably greater than the number of your age (assuming you're as old as you act.)
I think if you're just wanting to argue whether or not this is playable by an average drummer, you're missing out on the musicality of the whole thing. Drumming isn't just speed, or who can play the most notes. We haven't even heard what he's playing to yet and some of you are already picking apart what's average?! It's one thing to learn grooves off of a record, and it's another to create originality to your own music. Music is an art form, and Darrin is an artist. That's more than most of us.
absolutely true, i've been playing drums for 12 years and i've played stuff this fast and even a bit faster and its definitely harder than it looks (no one will believe me though because i don't own any recording equip and i can't really prove it)
the thing i like about what darrens done here is that though it may be simple, it's something that's normally done by d'n'b/break artists on a sequencer. what i'm guessing though, is probably that drum track is going to be played around with like they did in Reset.
I believe we are watching a take of "Spotlight" here. Although a shade faster than the Twilight remix, this clip here seems to emulate the tempo and style of the groove to the eventual album version. The ending fill is identical to the movie soundtrack. :)
When I practice drumming, this is who I think about. When I say I'm gonna be amazing at drumming one day, I just mean I'll be as half as good as Mr. Darren King over here.
Oooh shoooot! It's the Shogun! 😲
I didn't know you liked Mutemath!

This guy is so criminally underrated. Massive influence in my own drumming. Watching this video makes me want to go and jam so bad! ❤️

One of the best drummers in the business.
OMG!! I am so proud to saw that i know him and honestly...he is sooooo gorgous and sweet in person. He is freakishly kind.
One of the most underrated drummers of our time
Darren is without a doubt one of the best drummers ever.
that was sick
We could look at it like:

I've seen Mutemath live twice, and I had whiplash both times.
2023!
Spectacular...and done on your birthday. nothing better than that.
Actually, this is the end of Architecture, a bonus song when you buy it on itunes. It matches up perfectly with the tempo and beat
His drumming to me is the perfect blend of precision and punch drunk. I'm glad I got to see the band last tour.
i have never seen before that a human could play so fast..!!
this guy is a genius!!
my FAVORITE DRUMMER in the WORLD! Darren, you rule!
I usually don't post nor get into these arguements, but in the words of the great Duke Ellington, "if it sounds good, it's good."

i love this guy because he plays different than other drummers. He has this really unique creative side too
one of the best drummers ever! I love how complex his beats are
I also love how he has his left leg still keeping the beat until he stands up.
If anyone can perfectly emulate this drummer from any Mute Math song, I'll give him 5 stars cause Mute Math's drummer is insanely amazing.
The divine Darren King!!!
So good Darren. Cant wait to hear it, but not tired of first album yet!!!!
Like a machine!!!!!!
You know it's about to get real when you're taping your headphones on.
daren you have pushed me so much further in becoming a better drummer you rock! saw you almost 2 years ago in Montgomery Alabama at OFF THE WAGON and you guys turned it inside out!!! keep it up!
HO-ly. HOLY. That is talent. Just wow. Ahhh, he's so good! True talent, Darren. And happy birthday!
absolutely amazing. can't wait for the new record!
Happy Birthday Darren, you are the King! ;] I'm so anxious for the next albums release!
It's 2019 and i'm still gawking over this
man this guy is freaking amazing! He's gotta be one of my main inspirations for drumming(along with muse)
i don't even know how he does half the stuff on the albums!!-he's a machine!

Sweeet! The new album is going to rock!

Happy Birthday Darren!
Thank you for the wonderful music!
GO MUTEMATH!!!
There's an online beatcounter, and I get around 360 BPM? Darren is the King on drums.
this is why mute math is amazing!
this is pure drumming. not eq'ed crap. just pure drumming
This guy is always in the zone.
ridiculously awesome dude
Wow!!! We want to open for MUTE MATH so so so very much.
Love this band.
Brian Cook
WHY
I actually played a metronome at 175 bpm with the video. I had a blast.
Darren is incredible and Mutemath is a spectacular band
Beast. And it's not 175 either, it's like 177.5. Freakin' amazing, man.
we know he isnt the best, but hes very creative and his style is unique since the music itself is....thats why people say he is the best
that was awsomely executed bro
Argh! So exciting! Bring on the new album! :D
I love that sorta tone of his drums...awesome playing

How is it technically not that good? What would that mean

Ben Berman let’s break the spell of the typical shall we

i saw them live this spring, he taped the headphones on his head then, it was great!! i really do admire him cuzz dang hes really truly actually talented ;)
Darren's a beast! I love seeing him with the tape on his headphones! Hilarious! It says it all!

Yes.
I don't think I can take the excitement much longer!
Pure power. It's a shame that he left Mutemath.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DARREN!!!
Outstanding! Just one question...
How the Hell did you set those sticks down so slow after all that?
Sounds really powerful! I'm looking forward to hearing this song... :-)
freakin amazing im in awe and what was that convo at the end? was that a neighbor telling him to be quiet? not sure my sound isnt too good
hell that was awesome.
bloody amazing. Blimey!
thanks man! really appreciate it! do you have any tips on getting drums to have that vintage sound like Darren does ?
again thanks man! im on a budget and vintage drums are pretty expensive, whats the best solution?
damn, damn, damn... that is awesome.
haha, you called it man.
nice.
epic win.
insane man! big ups

This guy is my hero.
He's like a newer Keith Moon.
Awe inspiring!
