the Mad Season record was such an underrated masterpiece. When I first heard 'Wake up' on my walkman, Layne just killed my spine with shivers. River of Deceit, Long Gone Day, Lifeless Dead...just beautiful tones and melodies. an all time favorite! loved it
The 1990s was a very disappointing time with great artists who died from drug overdoses. We lost a lot of fine people who are irreplaceable. The so-called music coming out today doesn't even come close.
@Temporal 1990 that depends on what kind of music you listen to and if you listen to music artist or real musicians. You didn't cite any examples of what you're talking about.
Bullshit in the 2010s we have had lots of chiraq rappers out of the drill city die by the hands of white people selling them guns. U idiot way more tragic than rock.
I adore Layne. His amazing vocal range and his humble quiet demeanor really made his death all the more sad to me. Also, I didn't know about Mr. Saunder's tragic situation post Mad Season. The history of of that era of musicians reads almost like a Greek tragedy.
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to get information on John Baker Saunders. I'm a bassist myself and I love his playing but unfortunately he seems to get forgotten about most of the time. But watching this I learnt a lot more about him thanks again.
Above is one of the most underrated album ever. It's basically Layne's story. Dark and beautiful. I listen to it almost every night at bedtime. Layne's voice is so soothing.
Tie between "Wake Up" & "Lifeless Dead", but it's just SOOO hard. I REALLY adore all of Above. It's a f*g masterpiece, for real.... They were SO amazing live, too...
this album was 1 of the best of the late 90s and in my opinion i dont think Mike Macready has ever played better than he does on Above, i'm a massive PJ fan and seen them many, many times but for me Mikes playing with Mad Season is his best playing
When this came out in 95 it really blew me a way. The percussion, drumming, and horns, that was more than outstanding. And MIKE!!!!!, That shit was some of the best R and R of all time . Anybody that saw that show at the Moore theater, l envy you. RIP L.S.
I really loved the band and too am disappointed that nothing else came from them studio wise. The concert with Chris Cornell (RIP) on lead vocals and Duff McKagan on bass is just magic.
Despite making only one record, Mad Season were one of the best bands of the 90's. Each track is a masterpiece and Layne Staley is just so damn good. He is by far, the best singer of his generation.
Good video, I loved Mad Season’s Above when it was first released. Layne’s voice was amazing and I too would’ve love to have had a second album. But those damn drugs have taken so many talented musicians, it’s so sad. R.I.P. Layne and John.
Painted The Cover on my first apartment wall behind my bed. ( Long Gone Days ) gives me chills. Still have my original Vinyl. “It goes from cold to colder”. Been There..Done That. Still Alive and Still Recovering.
Froze Moments layne Staley was the patron saint of drug addiction. No ones lyrics encapsulate the struggle of addiction and depression more than layne Staley
I absolutely LOVE Above. Such an incredible album that holds together the whole way through. Perfect masterpiece. Mike Macready’s guitar tones are incredible too. November Hotel is an intense instrumental mind fuck. Now I have to try to get a copy of this box set.
Love all your great Layne videos. Also thanks so much for correctly noting that Layne's last interview was the Rockline 99 one, not that bullshit one Rolling Stone ran right after he died that everyone quotes.
I don’t know. I’m kind of happy that Mad Season was a one and done type thing. Above is a very haunting album when you think about it. The members used the writing process as their therapy but in the end, the darkness won.
I have the Deluxe album and Mark Lanegan signed it for me after a show, the same day Lou Reed died. Now I just need to find a display case for it... Keep up the good work! 👍👍
I picked up the 3 disc remaster shortly after its release. All the additional content is brilliant. Also got the vinyl record remaster and wow sounds so damn good.
When I listen to -wake up .....the part he says it like 6 times I just lose it.i picture laynes mom screamingit to him when she saw him 2 weeks after 4/5/02
How in the hell did I not know about the Expanded/Box Set?? The only thing I did prior to posting this message was purchasing that... I bought the VHS of Live at the Moore a couple years ago... put it in my old ass VCR.... and it ATE the tape.... suffice it to say, the VHS tape was meticulously reconstructed... and the VCR was pried open and destroyed. Haha... Thanks for the video 👍🏻
Did you guys hear Jerry's "pfffft" (at around 4:50) when the fan asked Layne about mad season's future? yes Jerry was very jealous of Mad Seasons sucess., and he had a right to be jealous or pissed or whatever you want to call it...... Alice in Chains is one of the greatest rock bands of all time. RIP layne mike dime
I love your videos! I just discovered your channel. Keep up the good work! Anyways, my favorite song would have to be “Wake Up”, with “Lifeless Dead” being a close second. I bought the box set as soon as it came out! It is so awesome to finally have “Live at the Moore” and those three songs that Mark helped them record. I’m actually also reading the book “Everybody Loves Our Town” right now. Such a great book with a lot of insight on the bands and the scene in general.
Layne will live forever in the hearts of those of us lucky enough to truly recognize this icon of making true negative conditions into hauntingly lovely expressions of rock . No one even comes close!
that 99' rockline interview Layne was happy the whole thing it seemed, but when he was brought up about that mad season thing he said no with an obvious irritation in his voice, id be irritated and bothered too, cant blame it
Having lived through that time intensely along with the music.. there will never be a better album to encompass all of the intangible aspects of 90's heavy alternative ... a somber time capsule masterpiece .. we will never hear such original brilliance ever again
"Above" has been my desert island 🏝 album since I heard it first in Spring 1995. I was 17. I first heard Mad Season taking bong rips b4 school my Senior year HS 1995. Pearl Jam and AIC were 2 my fav bands. Needless say, I was so mesmerized by Mad Season album I missed school that day and b4 I fell asleep that night in Spring 1995? I declared "Above" the best album of 90s. I also said in fall 95? "Its all been done. Rock/hip hop will never be better than it is right now." Im not right alot. But I nailed that.
I’m a huge Layne fan and I own mad seasons first album. For some reason I’ve never been able to get into that album at all. Even river of deceit, I’ve never been able to get into it. Strange considering I had an opiate addiction for 14 years (clean since 12-12-12) and usually relate to that type of music/lyrics. I haven’t listened to that album in sooooo many years so I’ll go back and revisit it and try to get into it again because I feel like I’m missing out
Great content. This was my generation. Sad to see some of my favorite lead singers kick off one by one so soon. . But anyways. Mad Season was brilliant. ty
AWESOME CHANNEL , MAD SEASON IS AN UNIQUE EPIC AWESOME AND FANTASTIC ALBUM IS A CLASSIC I LOVE THE ALBUM A LOVE THE STORIES SALUDOS DESDE MONTERREY MEXICO
without a doubt another Madseason record would have been awesome!! Above was a great album, all tracks were solid and Laynes vocals were tremendous as always. Layne was one of my favorite singers. His tone was tremendous. I wish he was able to get sober.. Another Madseaon record and of course who wouldn't want another AIC record with Layne on vocals. Just a terrible loss for my generation. He was a tremendously talented singer, lyricist, song writer and musician. Irreplaceable voice !!
It's Fuck awesome how MS started they call layne and ask if wanted to do a show. They practiced like 3 songs the night b4 or something then went out and made it up as they went live on stage. That's Fuckin awesome. I've only played with one singer that could do shit like that with us it's a scary but awesome feeling. R.I.P Mick
At 1:55, when u said "Mighty Skek-irk on saxophone", did u mean "Skerik"?? He played with Les Claypool in the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade for several years..
This album truly captures the feel of life in the North West for me. There's just a vibe there all over the record. "Wake up" feels like spring,,, the bass notes feel like water droplets dripping off houses and trees as the sun comes out slowly freeing them from their winter cells... the vibe/zylophone notes are like the droplets landing in little puddles in the street... Long gone day... the end of summer... that feeling of regret moving onto fall... "Lord it's a storm and I'm heading to fall These sins are mine and I've done wrong, oh babe Come on down."
Mike McCready said 'Baker' used to drive around in a little (station wagon?) with a bumper sticker reading," What we have here is a failure to give a fuck."
Favourite song from Above? Mine is wake up
Rock N' Roll True Stories River of Deceit, Long Gone Day and Wake Up are my favorites for sure.
Rock N' Roll True Stories lifeless dead
Rock N' Roll True Stories mine is probably lifeless dead. 2nd is river of deceit
X-ray mind. Wake up. November hotel.
Lifeless Dead and Artificial Red
the Mad Season record was such an underrated masterpiece. When I first heard 'Wake up' on my walkman, Layne just killed my spine with shivers. River of Deceit, Long Gone Day, Lifeless Dead...just beautiful tones and melodies. an all time favorite! loved it
The Flayed Man we’ll said a definite masterpiece
@Lodogg 3323 Then a demon came to him "You must know I'm gonna win"
@Lodogg 3323 How about the Guitar solo on Slip Away!!!
Hmmm wake up?
@@jessecanty7367 Incredible guitar solo also on Wake Up.
Man, i wish to god they had actually did the second album with Layne. There first album was so amazing.
Yeah it was
Would of loved a second album of songs! (Layne was just incredible) ...
..still sounded beast. We all wished for his recovery in them days. Never happened tho
Yes Adam, all members we're incredible but LAYNE, LAYNE WAS MAGICAL, a really blessed singer
Ah yes what could've been.......
However. Mike wrote all the songs. Why single out a member in a BAND? Can you please explain to me that kind of thinking?
The 1990s was a very disappointing time with great artists who died from drug overdoses. We lost a lot of fine people who are irreplaceable. The so-called music coming out today doesn't even come close.
@Temporal 1990 that depends on what kind of music you listen to and if you listen to music artist or real musicians. You didn't cite any examples of what you're talking about.
Im not disappointed.
Bullshit in the 2010s we have had lots of chiraq rappers out of the drill city die by the hands of white people selling them guns. U idiot way more tragic than rock.
Ok boomer
Honestly, neither does music b4
‘Slip Away’ is an incredible song. Mark Lanegan’s vocals and Mike McCready’s solo work is just insane. Depressing but beautiful. RIP Baker and Layne.
And now Mark too... My goodness i feel old, never thought I'd make it this far that's for sure..
I adore Layne. His amazing vocal range and his humble quiet demeanor really made his death all the more sad to me. Also, I didn't know about Mr. Saunder's tragic situation post Mad Season. The history of of that era of musicians reads almost like a Greek tragedy.
Great video. So sad we never got another mad season record.
Mad Season Above shows off laynes song writting skills, vocals, and his art work. So talanted! One of a kind. Love him. Rip
He didn’t write any of those songs ya dunce
@@tylurmackinnon6217 he wrote the lyrics ya douche.
He wrote the lyrics. Baker, Barrett Martin and Mike were the motor of that band.
There's not a single song on Above that I dislike 😍
It's best album of 90s
seriously, one of the greatest albums of all time
"am I the only one who remembers that summer..."
@Johnson Mayberry That sax in that song... Literally can feel one's soul being blown around, like a listless bag. I.E American Beauty ;P
My top 5 in order
-Wake Up
-River of Deceit
-Above
-Long Gone Day
-Artificial Red
So you literally called Lifeless Dead is not top.
"I don't know anything" is my fav
@@Vladislav_Postnikov "lifeless dead" #2
Best song is Long Gone Day. With Staley and Lanegan on vocals, you can’t go wrong! Two of the best voices, EVER!!!
too bad crack smoke burned out lanegans vocals...
@@j.4308 I think he sounds great. Years of smoking non-Filter cigarettes gave him that growly Tom Waits voice.
I'd die to listen to some new MS material. I was so happy to hear some of the unreleased tracks when they did the deluxe reissue of Above
Without doubt, one of the best albums of the 90's.
I still listen frequently.
I freaking Love Layne Staley most underrated front man with the most amazing voice in music.
best song ever is "River of deceit" that song is the greatest ever it's so freaking beautiful.
@@damienhughes1996 My fave song on the album too

Literally “same” for everything you just said
Baker is so underrated and that needs to change. He was so talented
It sucks how he was so desperate, broke, and lonely towards the end. Sad tale along with Layne's.
A 2nd album would have been great. Layne was such an amazing vocalist & song writer.
Above is one of the most underrated album ever.
It's basically Layne's story. Dark and beautiful. I listen to it almost every night at bedtime. Layne's voice is so soothing.

Layne's comment on Baker's passing was sadly short
