Day in the Life of Gouldian Finches in a Planted Aviary

  • These Gouldian finches are kept in a heated shed with a covered outdoor flight. They are allowed to spend as much time outside as they like, all through the year. I prefer to keep them as a group in a large space, with lots of plants and enrichment, as it definitely brings out their natural behaviour and extremely inquisitive nature. They are very active birds for the majority of the day.
    The Gouldian finches love investigating the plants, even though they are all artificial (plastic or silk). They always ate the real ones, so I replaced them with plastic plants, which have the advantage that they can be washed!
    Sometimes, lots of the Gouldians spend time hopping around on the floor, or hidden in a bush. Despite their extremely bright colours, their green backs do help them blend in from the right angle and in a bush, their red heads just look like berries!
    They all get on really well and there is hardly ever any arguing, even when they are nesting. I think it helps that there are more hens than cocks though and I feel that this is important. The red heads tend to be more dominant than the black heads. while the few yellow heads I have are quite timid birds.
    Some of the red head cocks have strong personalities and are quite tame, often flying over to have a good look at me. They adore the sunshine and sunbathing in very high temperatures (over 30C), although I do provide them with shaded areas. They look at their most spectacular in natural sunshine. I prefer the natural purple fronts to the many mutations that have appeared over the years. I personally think that natural Gouldians are the most beautiful bird on the planet.

    Thanks again! This was quite a recent video. They are all busy choosing their nest boxes at the moment, so lots of excitement in the aviary. There are more hen Gouldians than cock birds, which makes for a more peaceful colony I think.

      Ira Tri Thanks! This year I donated 25 Gouldians to Bristol Zoo, as I'd bred so many and didn't know what to do with them. They are currently enjoying their new aviary home and the zoo's visitors seem to like their bright colours.

    I have a rainbow one and a white green bellyed black head one. White primary green secondary black head on is Wasabi. Rainbow one is Ginger. They had eight eggs. They are dead or not hatching. We check with a light for any baby’s but there’s none. Wasabi is girl Ginger is boy. I saw them dancing before all the eggs. Ginger was doing the dance where they jump with their head up. It’s adorable. I check on them every day.
    I feed them millet seeds every week.
    I’m only 8. So I let my mom help me. I have two parakeets to. One boy one girl. Boy is named Mellow. Girl is named Peeps. Peeps is yellow. Mellow/Zero is White.

    Hi. I give them a good seed mix with some niger, dried broccoli, cabbage and seaweed (packed with vitamins and iodine), baked eggshells with a sprinkle of vitamin powder, mini mealworms (not all Gouldians will eat these) and an oily fibrous food called 'thrive 'n' gloss' - which keeps them in good condition and makes their feathers especially glossy. That's just what I do, and it works for me! The niger seed is especially important if they are outside and it is cold, as it is a fatty seed.

      +Martin Treasure hi martin, loved your film, im building myself a aviary over this winter, & was pondering what to keep, im 48 now & live in the uk. as a child we kept british finches & we loved them, but after keep coming back to this video, 5 or 6 times now, you,ve converted me to gouldians, they were so expensive back then, now they are affordable. where you use plastic plants,i wanted to use bamboo, is this a good idea to use real hardy foliage ?

    • @MartinTreasure
      @MartinTreasure  8 років тому +1

      +mucking fuddled Hi, I had a big clump of real bamboo planted in the aviary many years ago, but it just got eaten and eaten by the birds, until it vanished, which is amazing really as bamboo is such a strong plant. I have got some clumps of fake bamboo from Ikea and The Range, which look good. Gouldians are strange birds, because if the plants are too bushy, every now and again they seem to get a leg or foot caught in the V of the twig, so open foliage like bamboo is best. I keep mine outdoors and have the flight covered with clear plastic all through the year, but I gave some to Bristol Zoo recently and they've had the front section of the flight open this summer (still with a warm shed), although they plan to cover it for the winter. Hope that helps! Let me know if you ever have any other questions. Good luck.

      Martin Treasure thank you for replying, do the finches mix well with love birds ?

    • @MartinTreasure
      @MartinTreasure  8 років тому

      +mucking fuddled I personally wouldn't, but they may all get on fine, although obviously the lovebirds would soon shred any plants! Gouldians are very easy going birds and rarely get 'cross'. They certainly don't ever pick on other birds. The only time that they get slightly aggressive is when they are choosing nest boxes, and that doesn't last more than a day or two.

    • @MartinTreasure
      @MartinTreasure  10 років тому +4

      It's not actually a 'bird bath' as such, it is a square shallow granite dish sold at most big garden centres in the UK (search for 'Canterbury Granite Planters' to find an actual image). I bought a tall square granite pot and turned it upside-down, and then put the dish on the top. It actually looks like a really modern, stylish bird bath, but really it's a pot and dish, up the other way! The dish itself is the ideal depth for the birds to bathe in and they LOVE it. Thanks for watching and your interest. Hope that helps.

    Whenever you put any nest boxes in, they will most likely show interest and soon start investigating them. Ideally, they will nest when they are in good condition, after a moult. My birds live in an aviary and so nest when it is warmest with most natural daylight, i.e. late spring to early autumn. Other people choose to breed during the winter, with artificial light. It really depends on the birds. Good luck.

      Eric Mendoza That's fine, as long as they are not too closely related. Blues tend to be less hardy birds than normals, as they have been so inbred over the years, and therefore they are probably all distantly related, as are so many Gouldians. Good luck with your breeding efforts.

    Quick question if I put 2 pairs together they won't kill each others baby's if I put 2 nests.thank you

    • @MartinTreasure
      @MartinTreasure  9 років тому +2

      Eric Mendoza They should all live happily together, although there might be some squabbling at the nest building stage, when they can get very cross with each other - so try to put the nest boxes away from each other, rather than side by side. That calms down when they start sitting and on occasion, 3 or 4 birds will all share a nest and raise the chicks together. However, some Gouldians are useless parents and it is not unusual for them to toss their day-old chicks out of their own nest and possibly others. People generally think that this is due to young, inexperience cock birds, but I have known birds that never grow out of it. Other birds make fabulous parents straight away. Always choose parent-reared birds, rather than Gouldians fostered by Bengalese. Hope that helps!

    • @MartinTreasure
      @MartinTreasure  4 роки тому

      They will probably fight a bit. Cock birds grab each other sometimes. I've seen them holding another bird by the leg before while it hangs down from the perch! But it always looks worse than it is. They are quite choosy who they breed with though, so they might not even like the hen bird. Ideally they should have a choice. Hope that helps!!!

    hello there. I wonder if they like to be "cosy" as for strolling around on you or your hand? I mean can you pet them or don't they like to be touched? can they "bite"? how much did one pair of these birds cost? and is it best to buy a very young hatched pair so they can get more social with me or can I buy adults/it doesn't matter? I'm conserned though as for the captivity.. I mean your cage seems quite large lush and nice but it's still captivity.. we never really know what the birds might think but I'm pretty sure they'd choose freedom of a big rain forest over a cage.. what's your view point on this? do you plan to set your birds free back to the wild one day?

    • @MartinTreasure
      @MartinTreasure  8 років тому +2

      +JE ENN You should never release captive birds into the wild. These Gouldians would die very quickly, as they can't cope with draughts (they originate from scorching hot Northern Australia) and need a heated shed in captivity where they can warm up. They are friendly, curious birds, but they would need work to get them finger tame. Older birds are more dopey, because they can't be bothered to fly away! They would be easier to tame in a small cage, but personally, I'd rather see them flying around in an aviary.

    • @spearmint4093
      @spearmint4093 8 років тому

      +Martin Treasure Thanks for great fast response! so you don't pet them in your hands ever? how big is your aviary square-wise? is it real greens or fake plastic? how much did one pair of birds cost? what if I have one pair and they get chicks, will they try to mate and get gene problems or can I sell them back to a animal - store? + do they sing all day or quiet at night? like when do they sleep? :)

    • @MartinTreasure
      @MartinTreasure  8 років тому +1

      +JE ENN +JE ENN They are not especially expensive birds, because they are not a beginner's bird and will not thrive in an aviary unless the conditions are right, i.e. warm, no draughts, heated shed. Yes, the plants in my aviary are all fake.
      If you do hold them to cut their toenails, they might nip you, but I like that because it shows that they are a feisty bird with attitude! It doesn't hurt though and it depends how you hold them as to where their beak is. My aviary is about 10 feet long with a six-foot shed. The sides and top are covered with clear plastic. You should only ever buy birds from breeders. Pet shops are not reliable and often sell Gouldians fostered by Bengalese (i.e. not parent reared). They are also prone to air-sac mites, so that is why it is good to know the breeder who you are buying them from, so that you can be confident about buying healthy, strong, unrelated young birds. They will probably try to breed if you put in a nestbox, but they don't always make good parents. If this is going to be the first bird species that you've ever kept, to be honest, I'd recommend that you start with something easier, like zebra finches. They're lovely, although a bit noisier. Bengalese are also lovely. Gouldians just chirp a bit, so they are relatively quiet. They sleep when it is dark and like a lie in, i.e. they take a long time to properly wake up in the morning! Hope that helps.

    *IMPORTANT WARNING FOR PET BIRD OWNERS* : The food that we normally give to the canaries (and other companion birds) consisting of a "complete, balanced and top-quality seeds mixture" bought in pet shops or supermarkets, makes the owners trust that their pet is well fed, but it is not like that: indeed the health of the pets is at imminent and serious risk.
    The owners of canaries, parrots, cockatoos, parakeets, cockatiels, etc., WE MUST PAY ATTENTION TO DOMESTIC BIRD BREEDERS AND VETS and keep in mind that although we feed them with such a typical seeds mixture, our birds are very likely in danger of suffering an unexpected, painful and practically inevitable PREMATURE DEATH BY FATTY LIVER HEPATITIS. Canaries, for example, will surely die at 4 - 6 years of age of the more than 14 that they can live.
    It is discouraging that in a time like nowadays, in which food is studied in detail for other pets such as dogs and cats, pet birds are condemned to die painfully and prematurely in so many cases. You have to warn people so they can avoid it!
    This deadly disease is very common in pet birds but owners usually don’t know or detect it in time. And we can not imagine that *THE CAUSE IS IN THE FOOD ITSELF* that we provide to our birds, in which such *a typical mixture contains low-fat seeds such as canary seed together with other VERY fatty seeds such as niger, hemp or nabine and, in addition, the birds usually prefer to eat the fatty seeds* so that their REAL DIET is unbalanced by excessive fat, gradually causes the fatty infiltration of the liver and in a few years causes fatty liver hepatitis and PREMATURE DEATH to companion birds in general.
    *Also the breeding paste and its pigments and the sunflower seeds can attack the liver* if they are taken too much or for too long.
    It is a cruel disease that progresses silently and, when its unexpected symptoms suddenly begin, they are imprecise, easily confused with other ailments, so the owners usually postpone the visit to the vet at a time already critical for the life of the bird (besides that not all vets are trained to recognize this elusive and misleading disease, even to administer lipotropic and regenerative liver protectors in curative doses, just in case it is that and not a supposed blow). It's a process of slow and asymptomatic progression, but when their visible symptoms unexpectedly begin (acute phase) the disease accelerates.
    *SYMPTOMS OF THE ACUTE PHASE OF FATTY LIVER DISEASE* : First, emotional decay or progressive lack of interest, hard belly (in many specimens, with a dark spot with a half-moon shape on the belly, which seems a "tumor", to see it you have to wet your fingers to remove the down), falls from the sticks of the cage that seem for "errors of calculation" and then lameness more or less accentuated (that make believe that they are by the previous falls, but both symptoms are due to that it hurts the liver), lack of flight and singing, the bird fluffs up his feathers or inclines more or less slowly; Then, within a few weeks and even in a few days, forced breathing with an open beak, remaining lying on the floor of the cage near the food, sudden spasms from time to time (which make people believe that the bird is "epileptic" but it are twinges of pain of diseased liver), abundant greenish stools (caused by biliverdin which if it's not fasting, it means hepatic harm), then black and watery (from hepatic hemorrhages), then a strange somehow purple color of skin and beak, an exaggerated appetite and the final "improvement" of a few days (in the last phase, the already degenerated liver becomes deflated by what seems to be getting better), after which it suddenly dies among seizures (which may seem a heart infarct).
    For the first symptoms the liver has already degenerated to 80% and only an urgent (and accurate) veterinary action can save your bird and revert the liver situation. If you simply feed your bird with the loose seeds mixture (even if you give it fresh fruits and vegetables and let it exercise, for example by letting it out of the cage at home), right now your pet's liver is degenerating, and neither you nor your bird know. *Without liver protectors, it is almost certain that your bird will prematurely die and in many cases you will not be able to determine its real cause* .
    Hepatic lipidosis it's not only deadly by itself when the visible symptoms begin (sometimes even it does not warn at all until few moments before the death). Even before the acute phase it predisposes the bird to suffer infections, as it weakens the immune system. Furthermore, obese pet birds have an increased risk of many other diseases, including arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Obesity in birds it's not so apparent but it's more dangerous than in other animals like mammals.
    For these reasons, in addition to administering to the birds lipotropic and detoxifying / regenerating hepatic protectors preventatively and routinely, breeders usually make their own mixtures with low fat seeds.
    *PREVENTION AND/OR TREATMENT* : The time to act is NOW that your pet does not have yet the visible symptoms. It is necessary to ACTIVELY PREVENT THE HEPATIC DEGENERATION. Fortunately it is easy to do it: *It's very advisable to substitute progressively (within some weeks, as per the instructions of the manufacturer) the mixture of loose seeds for some pellets compound food of seeds, fruits and vegetables (preferably those that already include liver protectors), because this prevents the bird from filtering and eating mostly the fatty seeds (but without insisting if the bird does not get accustomed to eating pellets because he could die for starvation within a few days)* .
    *And, whatever the diet, it is ESSENTIAL to add to the drinking water or to the food a LIPOTROPIC LIVER PROTECTOR that includes the famous carnitine (which is also indicated for humans) and / or choline, betaine, methionine, threonine, lysine (and it is very convenient to supplement with a DETOXIFYING and REGENERATING LIVER PROTECTOR with thistle milk, boldo, artichoke extract)* . The liver protectors are amino acids, vitamins (of which they have a protective effect on the liver, such as vitamin C), fatty acids and essential oils that remove the fat from the liver, clean it, protect it and favor its recovery. They are cheap food supplements and it is essential to add them to your pet birds diet to conserve their liver. It is something that professionals as breeders and vets know, but we the owners usually don't know.
    Even, it are increasingly appearing in the market compound feed for pet birds that don’t include fatty seeds and that already include several liver protectors. But *the vast majority of owners still confidently feed their birds with the typical mixture of loose seeds with little fat and other very fatty seeds... And their birds continue dying of hepatitis due to fatty liver in a large number of cases (probably, in most cases)* . Now we know that, as fatty liver disease develops from the daily food itself, it’s most likely THE FIRST CAUSE OF DEATH OF PET BIRDS, and more likely as the bird ages.
    Some web pages that I have found about it (in Spanish). For example, this page echoes the wrong food situation in which these animals are too often: www.timbrado.com/malnutricion.shtml
    And on this other page: www.veterinaria.org/revistas/redvet/n111110B/111004B.pdf it’s described that the clinical manifestations of hepatic diseases in ornamental birds are much more frequent than people could imagine and that in many cases they are not appreciated, progress in a silent way and when they are evident, veterinary action may (usually) arrive late.
    To remark that, in general, practically any avian symptomatology should be considered as if it were a pathology that could be serious, and not allow the disease to develop because then it will probably be too late. To do this, we must thoroughly investigate the symptoms, take preventive measures that do not harm (such as giving liver and intestinal protectors according to the leaflet) ask for advice from veterinarians, breeders, etc. and administer the most appropriate treatment RAPIDLY, but without rushing in the treatment or with the doses in such small animals. If the days go by and the bird does not improve, it is necessary to continue investigating and, if necessary, change the medication in an informed and contrasted manner. Doing nothing or stopping research usually ends up with the bird dead, but acting without being sure of what is done and in what dose, it likely ends the same way. Finally, it is necessary to obtain and confirm the sufficient veterinary experience and have the serenity to determine in each case whether it is convenient to hasten to do and / or administer what medicine and in what dose, or if it is better not to do and let the situation evolve without medicating for the time being, or according to the medication that has already been administered.
    And that a limp in a bird is not always an injury caused by a blow, but the symptom of a disease of some organ (usually the liver or an intestinal disease) that needs to be discovered and treated as soon as possible. When in doubt, change diet to one with the lowest possible fats (only birdseed, or birdseed with other low-fat seeds such as millet, chia, fresh fruits and vegetables) and administer lipotropic and regenerating liver protectors in curative doses immediately ... although nothing could foreshadow a fatal outcome. Acidcare also has protective properties of the intestinal mucosa and stimulants of the immune system. In doses according to the leaflet do not cause damage and will surely save the life of your bird (if it is not too late).
    Hopefully these comments will be useful to save your pet birds from an absurd death and to keep them with a basic wellness.

      Of course it's not, what planet do you live on?! These are all captive bred and they clearly have an amazing home. There are way more in captivity than the critically endangered numbers in the wild, so thankfully they won't be going extinct now because of aviculture and zoos. Get your facts right, lol.
