Killer whales hunting a Humpback whale calf and eating its tongue!!!

- Amazing never before seen footage of Orcas hunting a Humpback whale calf and consuming its tongue. Shot off the Baja California peninsula, Mexico.
While fully grown Humpback whales have little to fear from Orcas, their calves are a favorite prey item for the transient Killers that frequently visit the Baja California peninsula. Orcas are such successful hunters that they can afford to be picky eaters. In the case of whale calves they will often eat only the tongue and leave the rest of the carcass to scavengers.
The hunt went on for over an hour with the mother Humpback and and an escort fighting to fend of the Killers. Eventually, as is often the case, the Orcas prevailed. We then witnessed something truly incredible! The largest male in the pod spent over an hour circling our boat holding the young whale in his mouth, almost as if showing off their prize (we try not to assign human attributes to non-humans but in cases like this it is hard not to)! The Orcas then proceeded to eat the tongue of the young whale right below us, allowing us the opportunity to capture this unique footage.
It was a bittersweet experience. We love all Cetaceans and animals and were heartbroken as well as in awe as we watched these scenes unfold.

“But it is has balance”
**gotta say that’s the best quote ever**
The tongue is preferred because it's just nutrient dense, raw meat -- i.e., no tough skin and blubber to bite through and rip off before getting to the muscle and organs.
It’s amazing that we sometimes feel so disconnected from this and don’t seem to understand how nature works, that just means we have lost ourselves in our ego and create a false sense of the world we live in and don’t see it as it is... We humans do the same thing, we eat other animals, we like the taste of their muscles breaking down in our mouth, we ARE animals as well, we do what they do, we are just like them
And they are just like us.
Coolio - Von Hoolio this might be the most retarded comment i’ve read in a while, are you like 12?
@Coolio - Von Hoolio They have reasons for doing that, they are taught by the oldest female to not eat the rest. Maybe because of toxins
Coolio - Von Hoolio actually we do kill baby animals. Have you ever heard of veal? That’s baby cow, that is forced to live in a cage only big enough to lay down. The calf cannot stand up in the cage because it’ll toughen the meat so the cage is barely 2 ft tall. People who consume veal want the most tender meat.
Humans also eat lamb. Lamb is a baby sheep. 😬
The way we raise and butcher animals is also terrible sad. You may want to look into all this.
@Coolio - Von Hoolio I eat lamb frequently. Very tasty, none of that tough mutton for me!
I do eat liver and heart (and tail and tongue) too which most westerners shy away from, so I balance out my impact somewhat.

Good footage! First time seeing orcas hunting Humpback's! The vids I usually see are gray whales, sperm whales, minke whales and on rare cases...blue whales.
Killer whales are highly social; some populations are composed of matrilineal family groups (pods) which are the most stable of any animal species. Their sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behaviours, which are often specific to a particular group and passed across generations, have been described as manifestations of animal culture.
yes great footage and clear water ... this has been documented and filmed many times before off Western Australia. Also see The Hunt, a BBC documentary filmed in 2013 & 2014 released in 2016. Each year several hundred humpback calves are taken here, usually quite close to the reef. FYI - The killer whales in these parts often eat more of the calf than just the tongue ... though yes, the jaw and throat appears to be the first parts consumed. Also they do not have razor sharp teeth, rather quite blunt which makes their precision dissection of prey all the more impressive.
That's no alpha male. Just a huge "mama's boy".
Thanks for the additional info Cetrac WA! We have seen the BBC The Hunt episode you are referring to, it does not show the Orcas actually consuming the tongue or other parts of the calf and we could not find any other footage of this online. I feel really bad for the mom because I have no idea how the mom can fight off the orcas
Seems like it's the young orca feeding on the tongue.
Thought the others would've eaten the rest.
As much as I like whales and a fan of orcas, I do feel sorry for the younger whale and that it's mother couldn't protect the calf.
But it's part of nature like on land where predators hunt the sick, old, weak and young.
We need predators it's important to earth's ecosystem.
But this is first time I've seen orcas hunting a humpback. It's rare because normally humpbacks use their flippers and flukes (tail) to hit the orca in self defence.
Sometimes they leap out of the water and use their weight as a weapon to smash the orcas.
But despite humpbacks being most acrobatic of all whales, their defence doesn't always work.
I would say orcas hunting other whales the most I've seen is when they hunt grays, sei, fin, minke, porpoises and dolphins.
Even sperm whales I've seen too when orcas attack.
Also seen orcas hunting stingray, great white and tiger sharks.
Squid and fish, seabirds, seals.
Anyways
hunting humpbacks I have to say is the rarest I've seen
I've seen some videos on youtube about orcas hunting whales, so it's not a suprise for me. Usually they bite the tail of the whale to weaker it and create a blood loss, and prevent the whale from breathing by swimming on its head to drown it.
Btw if you've seen some videos about orcas hunting sperm whales i would be interrested to watch
@@Rob1n1304 haven't seen in real life or real videos but I searched up orca vs sperm whale and it should be showing how the sperm whales try protecting the young bull calf in that video.

FYI, they kill for fun too
They were originally called "whale killers" by sailors who witnessed them killing whales. In time the name changed to "killer whales". "Orca" is derived from Orcus, a Greek god of the underworld, punisher of broken oaths. Both names are equally terrifying and aptly suited to these dolphins.
There are 135,000 Humpback Whales left in the world, and only 50,000 Orcas left in the world. Orcas are literally more endangered than Humpback Whales.
They are magnificent predators, however,no matter how many orcas there are in a pod,1 adult male humpback turns up....Not so tough anymore!
The orcas need this to survive though. Lot's of orca calves don't make it either, if they aren't fed enough. a pod will make sure the children eat.
