Cool ride, thanks for sharing!! Good to see the ( prep ) tools, that you brought.." always be prepared"!! Hmmm!🤔..Sounds vaguely familiar!! Says 30 year active service with ( BSA) leader! Lol!! I enjoyed the trek..thanks! . 👍🧙♂️!!!!
Thanks a ton for this - very instructive. Just picked up a 49 3a to use on Canadian backwoods roads and trails just like this. I was confident that a little 4x4 with those STA tires would be unstoppable in snow. Not so! Gotta get me some chains and plan for lockers too at some point I guess. So glad I saw this.
Nice day for a ride. The snowmobilers hate me too, I'm sure because I plow the road. But I claim it as my road that I let them ride on. So whatever. LOL.
Very cool Video Seth, I will say I'm surprised that the chains didn't seem to make as much difference as I thought they would. I don't have any experience with that much snow!
Snow is crazy.... it can completely change in an hour if the temperature goes up or down. And what is underneath the snow makes all the difference. This was wet “packing snow” with ice underneath. The video of my Jeep cruising through 18” of snow was because it was powder and no ice underneath.
Biggest factor was that the chains were just on the front wheels and not all of them. When you are climbing a hill and nearly all the weight is on the back wheels, then chains on the front won’t make as big a difference as all wheel chains. Hope this helps.
Willy's jeeps are some of the toughest most rugged vehicles ever built in my opinion. They can quite literally go anywhere. Their tough steel construction makes them nearly bulletproof. Also, what's the music you used in the video when you put on the chains? It's very calming.
When I was in Austria, the locals put those chains in front (or the back) of the wheels on the ground and then just drove onto them. Chained them up and they were done. Local taxi drivers. Was a matter of minutes, no jack required. :)
Great time with your son. You had a good time staying within your limitations. It would not have been a fun experience if you had to spend the time and energy digging out of the snow. I truly enjoyed your trip. I have an old '53 Frankenstein Jeep, it's tagged as a '53 CJ5 and we know that didn't happen. I think that it is a 53 chassis with a CJ5 tub but it is a fun time when I can get it out. Don't have a top and it has been too cold here in Oklahoma and now the snow has melted but I will get out and enjoy it now that it's warmer.🌅
Not sure if you will even see this but I was gifted an old CJ2A that has been in the family forever. I'm flying back to put on the hard top and load it on a truck but I've never seen the hard top before. How do they mount on? Any chance you could show that in a video?
Most hard tops are bolted or screwed to the tub. Some people use pop rivets if you don’t plan on taking it off regularly. Generally they are pretty simple and obvious to install. Although problems do arise when the tub is too rusty to attach fasteners.
awesome videos man.. Im in Benton where you near? would love to see that diesel setup I have a cj3a and a tj that I want to put a Mercedes diesel in from a 300d..
Hi! Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’ve passed through Benton a few times while Traveling. Check out some of my other videos. I sold my Mercedes Jeep back in December. It had the 617 diesel in it. They are a great engine.
Last year I was driving my jeep rubicon on a road that was groomed by a snowmobile club. The guy driving the groomer was pissed. I called the authorities and they told me I had just as much right on that road as the snowmobilers
The Jeep was in 4wd. Since vehicles have differentials only the 2 wheels with the least traction will spin. This is true for any vehicle that doesn’t have a locker or limited slip differentials.
Wider tires, better footprint needed. Did the right thing, no point in getting stuck especially out there with your son. I would just go with other people with winches next time.
I had chains for all four but didn’t need them. I almost always prefer chains on the front if I’m only chaining one axle. Fronts dig better in my opinion. But we’ve all had different experiences in different conditions.
Without lockers that would be a bad idea. You wouldn’t go anywhere. If you only chain one tire on each axle With open diffs the tire with the chains would stop and the tires without would spin. You need to chain both tires to get any benefit.
@@redeyecafegarage7484 whatever red eye, it works great on my two M-38 A1s...i live in the mountains and drive in snow most all winter...the right rear and left front are your power wheels going forward so they are the first to spin so i chain those two and if the left rear breaks loose i apply light brake pressure to stop the spin...been doing it for many years lol...
If the Jeep won't climb it, nothing will, especially none of the current computer controlled pseudo off-roaders. I suppose you were in 4 wheel drive high range all the time since leaving the road.

Nice little Jeep betcha hardtop kept you warm.Chains sure helped you.Beautiful day with your son Saul.
very nice cj2a.

Yeah my ndt tires work better in snow than yhe sta’s but chains are still needed when it gets deep.
Ok - so if I was to buy just one kind for summer and winter NDAs are the best?

Haha yup, they’ll get over it! I have to feel with them whizzing by my house all night every time it snows. And we live on a state road. 😆
Great video, cool family time!

haha Loved the Austin Powers cameo. Any day 4 wheeling is a good day.
Haha it was all I could think of as I was turning around. 😆

That method doesn’t work when you’re stuck mate. Haha
The best of the best the King jeep 💪💪🤙💯🇵🇷
Great

Sounds like a cool Jeep! Spring is coming!

@@redeyecafegarage7484 Thank you. Sounds like I will have to travel with a full toolkit and figure out how they had it attached.
So pretty!

Tyre size 7.50 16?
Yes
Lockers and chains would have made that ride completely different 😉👍👍🇺🇸
My Jeep is locked f/r and I’m very certain the outcome would have been the same. Wider tires, more speed and hp was the recipe for that trail.
@@redeyecafegarage7484 I ran lockers front and rear on an old 1972 scout with just modest tires and it was like night and day
@@jimmybritt9537 yeah I love my lockers. Especially in the flex stuff. Makes a huge difference! 👍

Yup. If you’re registered and insured you’re good to go! They can deal with it! 😆
how come when you were getting stuck it seemed like you had no 4wd and the tires just didnt work like they were supposed to

I think I recognized that overlook?

We weren’t really trying to go anywhere. Just enjoying some time outside.
👍
Not going anywhere with 2 Wheel Drive. Need a front locker for this.
Wouldn’t have made a difference. My Jeep is locked and it still would have struggled. Wider tires would have made a big difference
Why didn’t you chains on the rear wheels also . It would have made a huge difference.
I had chains for all four but didn’t need them. I almost always prefer chains on the front if I’m only chaining one axle. Fronts dig better in my opinion. But we’ve all had different experiences in different conditions.
better luck if you chain right rear and left front or better yet all four wheels...
