Alright I’m an artist ( like, painting on canvas- artist 😂) and that’s exactly how you mix up skin tones with normal paint and I’m mind blown rn. Why didn’t I think of transferring the same system to foundation ?!🤦🏼♀️😅
Ahaha yeah as soon as he started explaining it I was like 'oh, you mean like in painting'. I have noticed now that I'm fairly practiced at mixing skin tones I'm much better at matching foundations. 😂
Another artist here, this is exactly what I did! I use airbrush makeup and used color theory to make my own colors! It's all the same formula so I know it works and haven't had any issues.
This is the first PRACTICAL video I've seen to color match. My face feels like a crazy undertone test and my veins are blureen, not one or the other. I have this lip kit and never use it. I know what I'm doing this weekend!
Erin Guerra oh my god same!! Never touched this palate that I’ve owned for forever now and definitely want to give this a go! I’m not sure if I’m yellow olive or neutral 🙃
Yeah, the blue/green/purple vein test is worthless. My cheeks are super pink/rosy but my neck is kinda yellow? Cool foundations seem to match and warm and neutral are yellow on me, but they don't help covering up my redness. It's so frustrating.
Yaaaaas! 🙌🏻 All the videos I’ve seen are like look at ur veins. I’ve also seen a few talking about if u look best with gold ur this, silver ur this, both ur neutral 🤦♀️ Like come on people! Give us something useful! THANK U ROBERT FOR GIVING US SOMETHING THAT WILL ACTUALLY B USEFUL! 🙏🙏
Kim Day same! I have like pink n red on my face. But my body definitely looks more yellow. Plus, if I use a pale yellow color corrector, you can’t even see it cuz it blends in so well on my face. So I decided to go with that. But then my moms like ur crazy! Ur not yellow! Ur face has so much pink! I’m like well thanks mom, now I’m even more confused! 🤣
On another note do you put green primer or color corrector in your fountain to make it match too? Or am I the only one 😆 I can never find a match in store or online.

When we had the colour theory class in makeup school my teacher was like, ok so today's we're gonna do something different. He gave us all the primary colours plus white and black (face paint kind of texture, I believe they were all from a MAC palette) and he challenged us to create foundation, blusher, contour and so on mixing together those colours. It was so much fun!
When I took a theatrical makeup class in college, we did something similar. The instructor gave us 4 shades of foundation, from a pale porcelain to a deep ebony, and black, white, & primary shades of greasepaint that we had to mix together to match the foundation shades. Then she challenged us to create our own shades, and that of a partner.
The red acts as our "pink" color and you can see where he applied white after the red so the color looks more pink. The goal is mixing the colors is so we can find a color that is close to natural skin. Hope that helps!

@@notsotechie7412 All those combinations would just make different versions of black/gray (aka not realistic poc skin tones). Dark skin would use the same colors that Robert used (red &yellow) but with blue as well for the base and then use white or black to lighten or darken the shade. Green, orange and purple are secondary colors and will be made as a byproduct of mixing the primary colors red, yellow, and blue. Basically finding the tone is about the ratio of each of the primary colors and then using white and black to adjust the shade.
This was amazing. A real lesson unlike others where all you do is watch a 20 to 30 minute video of someone applying makeup with no real information. You can forget about them zooming in so you can see what's actually going on. Those so called honest reviews with no zoom for close-up inspections and then layering 50 thousand products on top of each other as if that's supposed to help us pick 1 of those 50 thousand products to purchase. So thank you for a short , purposeful video.
You, Wayne Goss and Scott Barnes are my corner stones for make up advice. Everyone else just tries on products.... Just edited this 😅 It sounds rude. But that's honestly what I see and feel. I always thought baking was silly for everyday wear. Robert was literally the only one who didn't make me feel like an idiot 😅❤️❤️❤️ Love your videos
I have recently started playing with make up to help hide the effects of chemotherapy and radiation as I'm treated for stage 3 cancer. This is the best video I've ever seen and I follow all the Beauty gurus. Robert, you're brilliant and quite informative.
Just from painting experience, some people have blue or green undertones, so maybe try a tiny bit of blue if you aren't coming up with the right shade and need something cooler toned.
Omg thank you for this! As an artist it’s so nice to see someone actually mixing colors. This is basically how I came to understand that I have yellow-olive undertones. I have fair skin so naturally I thought I had cool undertones and every time I’d wear foundation, my face would be light pink while my neck/chest/arms were a pale greenish yellow and for some reason I thought that was normal. And then warm foundations were always ORANGE on me so those weren’t helpful either. I’d look at the veins on my wrist and I’d see purple blue AND green so I was always confused, and neutral foundation made me look either gray or just off. When I mixed yellow and a bit of green in my foundation it reallllyyyyyy changed the game
Same! I'm also super fair but yellow undertoned so it's hard to find foundations that work. It's really difficult to find foundations that are light enough, but it's a whole other ballgame to try to find one with the right undertone. Not every fair person is pink or peach and it would be so fabulous for the industry to be more inclusive of all colors of the spectrum, fair or deep, and include more undertones.
Sarah Currie for yellow I use the Makeup Forever yellow chromatic mix which I purchased years ago. I know elf makes a yellow one now and so does LA Girl. As for green, I use the LA Girl green color corrector but I wouldn’t recommend you get that because it will change the formula of your foundation. Instead, you should try the LA Girl Pro Foundation mixing pigment (they have blue, yellow, white, and a deep tan). You can use the blue and yellow to achieve the green undertones. NYX also has a green color correcting liquid primer that would work well to mix into foundations! I’m definitely going to invest in either when my green concealer runs out! Hope it helps :)
God damn I love your channel. I ain't even playing. your voice is so soothing... I work a high stress job and nothing in the world calms the nerves like one of your videos man... And your smile, man... bruh. BRUH. So soothing. You could do post trauma therapy for fucking burn wards and all you'd have to do is walk into the room and introduce yourself and do small talk for 5 mins. REcovery rate 100%!~
Oh my God, I hardly enjoy watching anyone on UA-cam this much. Your style, your voice, your attitude... You are so charming! Thanks for joining this community and giving us something that is REALLY WORTH watching. Loves!
I would definitely pay for your master class in makeup history, application & all the wisdom you have to offer. I've literally learned so much from watching your videos in quarantine these last few months. Now I need to go and play with makeup and figure out my foundation shade! Thanks Robert!
Most UA-camrs rely on their concealers and powder to fix the wrong color match but I don't wear powder so I had to actually fix my shade using color theory. It's so fun to watch someone use it, it's truly like your face is a painting canvas.
“Coloured model” isn’t the best way to express what you’re trying to say here honey, many people consider the word “coloured” being used as a noun to still be a racist term because of how much it was used back in the segregation era. Instead you could say “a model of colour” or a “person of colour”. The idea is to use “person first” language, where you acknowledge the person before you describe their race/disability/sexuality etc etc. I hope this makes sense and is helpful for you in the future when you’re talking about this stuff. I can see that your heart is is in the right place! I would also LOVE to see more foundation matching and general make up videos that involved people of colour, or all different depths of colour and different tones and races/ethnicities so I think your comment is a great request :) just wanted to help you be able to use more inclusive and positive language.
@@Zimzum93 thanks for the explanation! I wrote that comment 2 years ago and at the time, I had no idea of the phrase’s racist connotation. I def wouldn’t never use that wording now and probably haven’t in about two years haha. Tysm for educating people on the matter tho!
You have the best info on makeup!!!! I just love it. Sometimes you just don't know. And do not count on the cosmetic ladies opinions. I have been sent home with some horrid samples. One girl tested foundation on the inside of my wrist. I RAN!!!
Would actually love it if you'd make this kind of a series, teaching basic stuff that people normally maybe wouldn't know about make up! Also love the fact that this vid is short and straight to the point, most of these kind of videos are 20+ minutes. Like sis I'm here to learn about make up, not to hear what your dog ate yesterday lol.
The best thing about you video is that there is no tea or shade or any of that over hyped garbage on the Internet. Basic techniques which work in real life and not in front of a high end camera with a hundred lights staring into your face. Your reviews of other people’s makeup routines are so informative then your dedicated videos will be all the more informative. This stuff is super helpful to me - a person who has different colours in the face, neck and body. Thank you! ❤️
Hey! I’ve been a makeup artist for 13yrs as well and the only one I watched is tati because of her makeup reviews but as for tutorial and techniques, yours is the only one I would watch since this is something I could apply in real life. Thank you for this, it’s the closes one I do but of course your skills are far superior! This is highly appreciated :)
That is the coolest thing I think I have ever seen someone do with makeup before in my life. As a makeup artist myself, I have a good understanding of the theory that informs it, but holy cow! To see you mix those cream pigments into your skin tone in real time was actually titillating. Re-watching on repeat.
Wow!! You never stop learning new techniques when it comes to makeup! I love how there’s no rules I also love how educated you are in the beauty aspect. You just taught me something I thought I never needed to know and I’ve been a MUA for 4 years now THANK YOU you’re my new favorite ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’m so glad I found your channel! You are now my go to for make up related anything. We need more people like you on UA-cam. Honest, professional and trustworthy.Thank you for the awesome tips and reviews. I’ve been binging like crazy!
Ok I’m not even into makeup but this is such a great channel! I’ve been recommended beauty gurus channel and started to watch some videos but Wooow!! Since I found Robert I’m in love! No drama, no bullshit, no tea...just pure talent and generosity in sharing his hard earned knowledge. I love also how he doesn’t bash anyone! Robert I appreciate you and your channel so much ❤️ thank you!!
Loving this. Also really loving this facial hair. Giving me a George Michael vibe with how well kept and shaped it is. You’re serving us looks and makeup lessons. 🖤
Honesty, I love this little things that Robert is saying. Like, when he zoomed in camera to his face, this little "hi, okay" is freaking cute. But also, when he talks about every step we should do, his voice is so soothing, really nice to hear. If I have made some mistakes, I'm sorry, English isn't my first language. PS. And for that "Consider subscribing", I subscribed asap few days ago. It's so nice to hear phrase like that, instead of "Make sure you subscribed" or something like that.
I surprised myself because I color matched a family friend just by my eyes. And then I watch your video, and I was able to tell what colors you needed beforehand 😩 it just relieved some of my anxiety! I’m a protectionist, and it’s important that I get the job done right!
I was interested to see it in action because he said the only colors we'll need is black, white, red, yellow, and blue face paint. I'd like to see how he uses the black face paint for drown skin
That would be interesting to see. Black is very harsh. It seems like it would take more tries than what he did on his face. Hopefully he will do a video with someone with a darker complexion soon so we can find out together because now I'm curious.
Yes, you would darken with black. In practice however the pigments in black paints tend to overpower other colors or pigments. It also, like white, desaturates your colors so they look more grey. So I would think that you would start by having an equal amount of white, black, red, blue and yellow and work from there adding more red, blue and yellow if the color is desaturated. I say add white so the black doesn't overpower everything and you have something more in between to start from instead of straight black.
I learned of my correct foundation undertone and shade the hard way that I end up with a ton of foundations that I mix around to become the perfect shade and undertone. I wish I discovered your channel much earlier. You’d be my lifesaver!
YESSSS!!! The video I just needed! I have a hard time matching my foundation, because I have olive skin but I'm pale, and I can't always find the right shade. Thank you so much for this. I think it's a struggle for many of us :)
YOU ARE AMAZING. You remind me so much of Wayne Goss. Straight to the point, super helpful, very skilled and knowledgeable, debunks silly Instagram trends and just an overall delightful guy! So glad I randomly discovered you a few days ago!
You came up on my suggested about a week ago, I have already learned so much from you! I finally managed to find the correct type of foundation for my skin and I feel beautiful. Probably the realist beauty channel on here!
Woah i'm not going to lie, once I saw the end result I was a little bit mind blown lol. This is one of the most helpful videos i've seen on this. I still struggle to find my foundation shade so i'll definitely be trying this tonight.
Watching this in May 2024 after watching your latest video on how the skill of matching foundation to skin tone is becoming a lost art. Such great information here! I’m going to try this out for sure. Thank you Robert! 🎉
I have only discovered your channel recently and I need to say thank you for giving us real and educational content!! Your videos are calming to watch, you explain every concept in depth and you're just real and authentic! I am so over the thousands of channels that are full of cringey trends, inaccurate information and clickbait. I'm a qualified makeup artist and it makes me mad when influencers promote techniques that are either useless or sometimes even harmful. I love what you do! THANK YOU! ❤️
I love how you always go into the theory of doing your makeup and the art of it. A lot of beauty influencers don’t really talk about the color theory and undertones and even the science I guess you could say lol but you do! And I love it! It makes you understand how it all works lol ❤️
Fascinating! Part 2: "Dark circles and skinperfections: color correcting with primary colors" (the giggles throughout the video are my favorite!) Xoxo💋
I had to watch this twice so I could really understand what happened, I loved your patience and the clarity of your explanation. Thank you for making this kind of video so we can understand the theory and improve every time. Thanks!!!
@@RobertWelsh that's true... but your eye crease is telling me you wear some make up... have a look, it would be a No-Go for me (and I think for you too) 😉
You are absolutely brilliant!!! I have never seen someone explain undertones like this before. I’m embarrassed to admit this but recently I went and had my skin tone matched. As a 40 year old woman, I never knew my undertone. *hangs head in shame*
I have acne and I find it so hard to find the right foundation- I'm not sure if I am more peach or yellow because of the pigmentation of my acne and I hate it so mUch
A.M K i have this exact same problem !!! and it doesn’t help that the acne is what i’m trying to cover so then i’ve got to try different undertones because i can’t seem to figure it out. it’s a problem 😔
I wish I could bring you with me! I'm gonna try, my daughter will love this. I love your learning videos doll, there really aren't alot of you tubers out here anymore giving valuable makeup info to help in every day life and I mean that's fine, I just personally miss the channels that do alot more teaching than just GRWM. Also don't get me wrong, I love a get ready with me like the next girl, but I just miss more tutorial based videos is all.
This was literally magic the way you were able to transform those colors into your skn tone!! So much more helpful than just looking at your wrist for veins
Brilliant! It's helpful to see you do it in real time - so many youtubers talk about color matching but don't say what undertone they are, so it's hard to tell if you're seeing color accurately.
This is so helpful! I'm tired of the veins, gold vs silver, seasons, and clothing colour tests! I came out as a fair yellow with a bit of blue. I believe that means I'm a very pale olive colour, which makes sense! In evening light I look green, when comparing my leg with my mother's I'm noticeably more yellow! Thank you Robert! (plus my Nana is olive so I may get it from her!)
Wow. I have been scouring UA-cam for exactly this color theory tutorial. The "stripe 8000 foundations down my cheek" method was definitely not going to work for me. I'd love to see people with a bunch of different skin tones replicate it (or see you do it in future videos)
Wow! A makeup artist myself. But this is just total game changer. Can't agree more on no one colour foundation is enough to give the right time on a skin. Tq love this tutorial. Greetings from Malaysia.
ur a cool neutral!! blue eyeliner can be cool, warm, neutral. depends on the shade!! a pure blue is a cool neutral, but periwinkle is cool and turquoise and indigo are warmer
Robert! You just blew my mind! I am amazed that you did that with lipstick and now I am searching my stash to see if I have enough stuff to try this! *BOOM* mind blown!
I am so fascinated with undertones! I've watched a MILLION yt vids on this topic. But this was such an original and brilliant take! And a whole new approach for me! Can't wait to give it a try (when I get some colors)! TY!

You could do post trauma therapy for fucking burn wards and all you'd have to do is walk into the room and introduce yourself and do small talk for 5 mins. REcovery rate 100%!~
A makeup artist who stood up and showed us how to mix your own shade....👏🏻👏🏻
Oh my God, I hardly enjoy watching anyone on UA-cam this much. Your style, your voice, your attitude... You are so charming! Thanks for joining this community and giving us something that is REALLY WORTH watching. Loves!
Thank you so so much! 🖤
I would love for you to bring a colored model to demonstrate how to apply these techniques on a dark skinned person :)
Yes that a great recommendation
THIS.IS.GENIUS! I can’t wait to try this later today. Thank you, Robert. We are all grateful we found you.
Thank you!! 🖤🖤🖤
That is the coolest thing I think I have ever seen someone do with makeup before in my life.
As a makeup artist myself, I have a good understanding of the theory that informs it, but holy cow! To see you mix those cream pigments into your skin tone in real time was actually titillating. Re-watching on repeat.
Thank you so so much!! 🖤🖤🖤
Thank you!!! 🖤🖤🖤
I’m so glad I found your channel! You are now my go to for make up related anything. We need more people like you on UA-cam. Honest, professional and trustworthy.Thank you for the awesome tips and reviews. I’ve been binging like crazy!
Wow, who knew the thing that was missing from makeup channels was education? 🤷🏻♀️
Thanks so much. I hope this is the new trend for makeup channels.
You're like Wayne goss's proverbial son. Thank you so much for these videos.
🖤 thank you!
I love when MUAs take it back to basics! Thank you Robert!!
I surprised myself because I color matched a family friend just by my eyes. And then I watch your video, and I was able to tell what colors you needed beforehand 😩 it just relieved some of my anxiety! I’m a protectionist, and it’s important that I get the job done right!
I really need you in my life- still not found a foundation that matches my skin 😂😶
You are wonderful teacher, and your generous spirit is lovely and refreshing!
i would love to see an example of this on a darker skinned person. Would we use black to darken it?
Or a dark brown.
Believe it or not blue, green, yellow, orange and MAYBE purple can work depending on your skin's undertone.
I learned more about my undertone by painting portraits in my highschool art class. Biggest life safer!
IM TELLING YOU!!! any budding artist needs to see this. It's really helpful for painting skin too
I just finished binge watching all of your videos and then you uploaded just in time for another one 🤗❤️
Would of love to see you use the blue on the other side as a comparison
I have only discovered your channel recently and I need to say thank you for giving us real and educational content!! Your videos are calming to watch, you explain every concept in depth and you're just real and authentic! I am so over the thousands of channels that are full of cringey trends, inaccurate information and clickbait. I'm a qualified makeup artist and it makes me mad when influencers promote techniques that are either useless or sometimes even harmful. I love what you do! THANK YOU! ❤️
You are awesome, I can't wait to try this just because, "eye" couldn't believe how you achieved your skin tone like that, wow! from Hawthorne Calif.
This is the first “foundation” video I have ever found helpful. Thank you so much!
Yasssssssss.. My brown skin needed this video so bad. It's been 3 years I have been into make up but I hate foundation coz its never my skin tone.
This is insanely clever!! Have never heard anyone explain it so well 👏👏
You should definitely make a beauty school type of playlist on here. 👨🏼🎤 I’m already wanting to look through your videos for more like this 🧐👀
I had to watch this twice so I could really understand what happened, I loved your patience and the clarity of your explanation. Thank you for making this kind of video so we can understand the theory and improve every time. Thanks!!!
That was the coolest thing I have ever watched!
I so need this video! Thank you so much...You are such a sweet man..I just can't get enough of your tips and they work! Love love love you! ❤❤
I know what I'm going to be doing this evening - now if I could just remember where the kids face paints are...
wow blown away with this !! will try this myself
You don't need a foundation you have perfect skin
Oh thank you!!
Whoaaaa last time I was this early people still cared about strobing
😂😂😂😂😂😂🖤
😂😂😂
Your channel is such a breath of fresh air here on youtube!!!
@@magali5741 Having Rosacea is even more brutal. I have to hide the red tiny blood vessels on my face but I'm a neutral undertone, generally speaking.
Just do it on your chest instead! I match my face to my chest because my face has so much redness but I'm actually warm toned
Yeah, I have rosacea and hyperpigmentation and I match foundation to the neck, chest and the edges of my face (my rosacea doesn't reach them)
@@igam2259 I do the same thing!!! I have crazy hyperpigmentation so I match my chest/neck area so that my face is the same color as they are.
Everytime i see one of your videos i remember the difference between beauty guru and makeup artist, thank you. This is very useful
love these tips, i don’t wear makeup no more but if i do I’ll definitely consider doing this ❤️
I love you that showed this. I learned a lot about mixing color from watching.... Bob Ross. I mean talk about a highlight and shadow master. 🥰
You actually give really good tips, I recently came across with your channel and I’m officially in love ❣️🥰 great content
I just so loooove this fella and his channel!!! Thank you for your time again sir
I paused James’ video for this because I’ve been struggling with my foundation colour 😂😂 (sorry James)
😂😂🖤
Lmao same
Brilliant! It's helpful to see you do it in real time - so many youtubers talk about color matching but don't say what undertone they are, so it's hard to tell if you're seeing color accurately.
Damn i'm starting to binge watch all your vids lmao youre just so good at what you do! 💕💕💕
(plus my Nana is olive so I may get it from her!)
oh i love this - just watched your brother's video and now I'm here getting some pro make-up tips;
They : Check veins on your wrists
Me : *Finds a purple and a green vein*
Same her
Purple and green on the same wrist
I think that’s neutral
You’re neutral hun x
Right! My veins are blueish and greenish but like blue eyeliner washes me out and look sivkly
ur a cool neutral!! blue eyeliner can be cool, warm, neutral. depends on the shade!! a pure blue is a cool neutral, but periwinkle is cool and turquoise and indigo are warmer
I love this guy's accent!! Wow!! 💖
Watching you kinda inspires me to go into make up and i dont regret that one bit 👀 Cheers, love~
Robert! You just blew my mind! I am amazed that you did that with lipstick and now I am searching my stash to see if I have enough stuff to try this! *BOOM* mind blown!
Just discovered you tonight & im so in love!! You’re amazing! Definitely will be binge watching ❤️😘
Thank you! 🖤🖤🖤
Finally someone who actually KNOWS how to makeup. Thanks for sharing!
James Charles needs to watch this. *sips tea*
On a serious note great video!
I am so fascinated with undertones! I've watched a MILLION yt vids on this topic. But this was such an original and brilliant take! And a whole new approach for me! Can't wait to give it a try (when I get some colors)! TY!
