Thanks for yet another greatly informative vid, Danny. I own a pair of VMPS Super Tower R speakers that have been in storage for years now, because I just never really liked how they sounded. Besides being almost the size of a refrigerator each, they also just sounded somewhat bloated and harsh to me.
I have measured and tested a pair of those. There were numerous issues. You would be better off salvaging the drivers from them and doing other things with those drivers.
Thanks so much for the tip, Danny. I was just going to sell them, but I’d much rather build something if possible. They have some cool looking ribbon speakers in them too, and the up firing tweeters could probably be used for something too. Do you have any boxes at GR Research that you might recommend putting the drivers in? I don’t want to take up all your time, so feel free not to answer this last question, but do you happen to remember any of the issues with them that would possibly show why I found them to sound bloated and harsh? I just acquired some VMPS RM1 speakers and I am debating sending these speakers about 80 lbs each down to you for some crossover rework and driver replacement. They are super thick and wooly in the bass and I am pretty sure these 8" drivers as slow. Ever seen or heard this speaker before? It also has 10" passive radiator instead of port. The cabinets are solid but compared to my B&W bookshelves its just a completely different animal.
@@pfcoop1 Yeah, those things actually need a complete redesign of the crossover to make them work properly. There were numerous issues with them, but solvable on that model.

I’m measuring spectral decay in listening position in the actual room and the graph is not very encouraging. How do you suggest measuring in a way I can take any conclusion? Measuring in close proximity, or something like a meter (3 feet) away?
You really can't get anything from a spectral decay of an in room response. You'll need to look at a MLS, or RTA measurement. And please do one speaker at a time. If you measure them both together you'll be looking at interaction with each other.
Yes, the spectral decay will tell you more about how a speaker will sound than any other measurement. Check out what I say again starting at 6.25 mark. And there are some examples that I used of some speakers that are really good, and some that are really bad. You want to see a clean and fast decay across the board.
The idea is to show good examples and bad examples and show you what to look for. Sorry, but I don't have any bad examples of our own work. We don't turn out stuff like that.
I got a ? that i'm about to research to maybe do a furure video on and that's how is it in the AVR/HT world why do companys lie about real power ratings ? why cant their be a atandard like 20hz to 20khz? Ratings of watts and THD i mean 2 channel audio isnt as bad but they lie also take my emotiva basX A300 amp its 25 pounds at 150 watts but my Integra M-304 is rated at 165 watts and weighs 50 pounds and theirs a huge difference between them both specs at 8ohms amd the integra is on a different level?
It is not so much that they lie. There is just no standard as to how they measure them. Some use maximum clean power delivered and some use maximum total power. Don't give too much weight to those specs.

Sorry, Danny. That was a kinda dumb question about the drivers. How are you supposed to know the sizes of them? Haha
