  • rootsnursery.com Jon is pruning a burning bush thats gotten way out of hand. and yes thats halloween makeup in his hair! This is my first real editing job, so I hope its not too long and every bit is helpful. I tried to make it fun!
    He used a lopper, hand pruners and a pruning saw. First step is to cut all the dead and unhealthy stuff out. Then remove the branches from the crown (the bottom) Cut close, but not flush up against the main stem. Go through and look for branches that are crossing, or are too crowded. If you want to take the bush down a few feet, trim for height. you can cut it back hard in late fall (rule of thumb is after at least one hard freeze/killing frost)
    I think it looks SO cool cut back this way... tell me what YOU think!

    I hope you’ll have a video next spring to show us how the burning bush look after the trimming. For sure it will look great.

    I think your video is the best for teaching me how to do this. Going outside now to do it. Thanks teacher.

    Great job! Just remember that it will grow another foot and half or 2 in the next season, so I would have pruned it a foot lower.

    You are going to get a lot of water sprouts on that in spring.

    I read somewhere that you can cut a Burning bush like your showing here at grade level and it grows right back . B.B. can be invasive. Are you just cutting it not caring about the nodes?

    it does get a little long around the middle to end, but its still good to see how to prune the entire bush.

    Trish, you did a great job editing this video, music is great! And its so strange watching myself prune something...
    First video edit...
    Anybody have any input? How would you rate the educational value of this video?
    How about the length? Too long?

    Well I need to trim mine but use them to block the back unfriendly neighbors. So I need to leave as much leaves as possible for privacy

    Why didn’t you wait until December when the fall color was over? Isn’t that what you wait all year for?

    • @whatinspiresu

      We live in Chicago, its pretty cold in December. We were lucky enough to have a very warm day on November 1st, so it was time to do it.

    what does the bush look like before it blooms?

    • @whatinspiresu
      @whatinspiresu 4 роки тому +1

      It doesn't actually bloom. It's green all summer and then in the fall, it turns a brilliant red color. This particular bush is OLD, probably 45 years old. The newer varieties are 'dwarf' so they dont grow as tall. And they're absolutely gorgeous when they turn their fall color.

      @@whatinspiresu I have two that are now huge. Even pruning back to the point that you have nothing but sticks and it looks dead .... the greenery will still come back?

    • @whatinspiresu
      @whatinspiresu 2 роки тому

      @@Sheffield6688 yes the bush grew back very nicely. Right now I have to cut it back again. It’s bigger than before. Burning bushes can take a heavy pruning. As long as your bush is healthy it shouldn’t be a problem. Mine must be 50 years old and it’s still going strong. If you’re worried, by no means do you have to prune so drastically. Just follow this guidance. Take out all of the dead branches. Remove the branches that cross and rub against each other. And then prune for height (and shape if you feel). You should have a lot of foliage left so it won’t look like a stump.

    How did this look the following fall?

    • @whatinspiresu
      @whatinspiresu 4 роки тому

      it looked great!!! Sorry, I didn't get a photograph of it growing back. HOWEVER, after 8 years, it's ridiculous again. So I might get that shot after all.
