I live in South FL and the native Firebush by far is the best at attracting various types of birds for the berries, and butterflies and hummingbirds. Once the hummingbirds leave my yard and migrate back North in mid March/April I do a hard prune of the Firebush. Always grows back nice and full
The first video I've seen that showed the progression of the plant after pruning thank you
Glad it was helpful!
This is so helpful! One of my firebushes is very leggy so I'm going to trim it back. I probably should have pruned it sooner!
You were right about how to prune my Mulberry tree. It finally fruits. Your so important for so many of us. I hope you know that
I am learning so much about Florida gardening now - coming from northern states it is very different! I want to do natives for sure. Thank you for providing inspiration and information😊
I absolutely love how you went out of your way to actually show how fast the firefly bush had grown! When I watch videos It sucks when people show before and after but don't go in depth. Thank you!! This was a video that really helped
I really appreciate this series on native fire-bush bought 2 for screening at a master gardener plant sale last week and this is a true to life confidence builder thanks so much!
Love the video
Could you possibly do one on firecracker plant progegration
Thank you in advance. I've been wondering how the heck to trim my firebushes which are totally out of control - without killing them. I look forward to watching this.
Nice! I have to prune down my Turks cap hibiscus the same way. They always grow back too 🌱💕
I just planted a fire bush, so this is the perfect video! Can’t wait to see how much it grows this year.
Yay! Great timing to plant it! You may find it grows five feet in two seasons
Thanks for sharing! Just planted two native fire bushes in my backyard. Only a foot tall right now. 😊
Yay! They will explode over the summer. Three to four feet. It is shocking how fast they can grow.
Good to see the time lapse!
Just what I needed. Thank you.🙏
You’re welcome 😊
I bought 2 little fire bush plants at my local Nursery a couple weeks ago. After bringing them home and watching your "native vs non-native" video, I was so excited to go out and discover that mine are actually native!🎉
However, I am almost positive that these fire bushes were not being taken care of very well. They were pretty "homely" looking when I got them. Not sure if that is normal when they are just starting out? The leaves seem to be pretty sparse and some curling. Also many turning red and falling off at the slightest touch. There were a few holes in some of the leaves when I first brought it home. I fully check them all the time for pests but never see any on them. I have been spraying them with neem oil here and there, and also All Seasons horticultural oil.
They are in 3 gal pots and I have not planted them yet. Trying to pick the best spot with the most sun in my lawn.
I have also given them a little bit of my homemade "bunny poop tea" 😁 from my wild cottontails. Actually, they are the reason I got these firebushes... to give them a fun place to hide😊 so I want my firebushes very full and bushy all the way to the bottom!
I am new to gardening all together, but I have started a bit of an addiction this year. I have been learning a lot about how to make bushes and plants more full and bushy. I was thinking that I should do some light pruning or "pinching" but I'm scared because they are so sparse and homely. I did do just a few branches last week... just cut the very tips though.
Each plant basically has four main branches. Most of them had flowers on them already that actually were really pretty and looked healthy. I cut the ones without flowers. Most of the flowers are finishing now and I did cut just the flower off one of the branches today. Am I just being a scaredy-cat? Should I be cutting more off each branch to start some new growth at the bottom and get these things going? I wasn't sure if the plant is too young to do that? Or maybe that's exactly what it needs to get more healthy.
I would appreciate your words of wisdom.
Thank you for your videos!!❤
I'm just learning about this plant. I started a butterfly garden last year. My question is can this plant be potted to keep it from growing so outta control and maintain a smaller bush?
The freezes here take mine down to the ground. They seem to get larger each year, by a foot. Mine start to come back around March and grow up to six foot before the first freeze, usually in December takes them out.
Mine are 10' tall and died back from a freeze. I'm not much farther north. I'm starting to get new growth from the bottom. I guess I should prune them back. Can't wait to see all the Zebras and bees all over them
My fire bush is in the pot I bought it in still. Not sure where to plant it yet but I read it can be propagated by cuttings. If it roots easy enough I will try to get neighbors to grow it
You can definitely propagate from cutting. Some of the firebush in my backyard is from cuttings. I literally just shoved it in the ground.
Mine are both huge like the one by your door and need to be hard primed but they are full of stinging pollinators. Any tips?
Growing one from seeds.
Nice!
Is it too late to prune fire bush in zone 9 b? I planted several last summer to form a hedge. Some are doing well, but others have sparse and rusty looking leaves. I am not sure if it was the hurricane or the freeze this winter that damaged them. I’ve been afraid to prune since they didn’t show any new growth, but maybe I should give it a try!
The freezes will cause them to die back. Let it warm up into the 80s and then prune them
@@WildFloridian thanks! Will do!
so what time of year should I be doing this ?
During the warm to hot season. I did this in February
Are using any of those to make more plants?
I have enough Firebush in my yard. But some of the firebush in my yard is from cuttings.
Can I move a firebush that has been in a spot for several years? It's being shaded out by a gardenia. Thanks.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
I would propagate it and then remove the one that is shading out the gardenia. More than likely moving it will kill it.
@@WildFloridian ok thanks because it was a mother's day gift so I don't want to kill it. Easier to trim the gardenias. Have a great day
My firebush are always struggling. The leaves all look diseased, the aphids are out of control... I've pruned it back to stick many times and no matter how I treat it to keep the aphids away, they come back. I thought these natives were hardy but I'm thinking of getting rid of them because they look horrible.
Your soil could have too much fertilizer. Aphids are a sign of too much nitrogen.
@@inchristalone25 Hmmm, I've never fertilized it but maybe it's just naturally occurring? I'll have to look into that, thank you!!
@@striketochill No problem, now that I am thinking about it my firebush has some aphids as well and I don't fertilize it, but it is in a very bad soil spot so it could be just very low brix, any increase in brix kills the aphids. Brix is the measurement of sugars in the leaves. To get a high brix requires many minerals and generally low stress. ( too much nitrogen greatly lowers the brix)
@@inchristalone25 This is really helpful, I appreciate it!! They are in a spot where I don't have any mulch or covering (I just googled and it looks like covering in a layer of mulch could help reduce nitrogen?). They have been in a different spot in my yard previously though that did have mulch so who knows. I guess I can try it and also check my garden center for something that might be able to increase the brix. Thank you thank you thank you, I was strongly considering giving up on them but I think I'll try remedying the nitrogen first. :)
Very blurry video and now it’s buffering.
That’s a bummer
Thing grows like a weed.
