  • The Russian backed Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Patriarch Kirill are unwanted has been "banned" yet as you'll see in today's video that as of mid-October, 2023 they are still in operation. I give you a tour of the thousand year old catacombs in the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, show you the forbidden upstairs of the main church, and explain why the UOC is now disallowed in Ukraine.

Johnny, if the shoe was in the other foot, Ukrainians would’ve been long gone, so my suggestion would be kick their rear ends back to Moscow. There’s a war going on in their backing Russia, so that pro Russian faction, should be deported back to Moscow ASAP. In a immediate deportation.
I would have my foot in the middle of the butt going back to Moscow I still cannot believe when you just said Johnny, we’re in the war and they have Russian synthesizers within Ukraine is ridiculous.

It's sacrilege, Johnny, what the russian orthodox Faith did inside Ukraine's sacred places. And it's so sad that these sacred places of sanctity were refused by the russian orthodox clergy to the wounded troops, especially as they have a hospital building there. That almost sounds like they were well aware that russia was likely to target any hospital that was treated Ukrainian wounded military. And if they were in cahoots with their boss-man back in russia, then it's not difficult to see that there was russian propaganda being pushed to the Ukrainians who attend their regular churches.
That was so sad to see how they just painted their own mural there, as you say, right next to Jesus Christ.
So many of the churches and cathedrals across Ukraine are so beautiful and many are very ornate, but even those that are less so, I'm sure feel so right to be in. I've seen pictures of a fair few, and of course the ones in my family's regions.
My Mother *always* covered her head and wore dresses or skirt to church, as did we, the girls in our family. My Father had I believe a scarf he'd give to Mum to wear, and it has a beautiful story behind it. I didn't inherit that, but that's okay, I will likely make and embroider my own headscarf before I come to Ukraine.
How gentle and polite was that priest who asked you to excuse him. This is the way, the good manners I knew that my late Father had. That was how we were raised.
I am so sorry that your guide carries such sorrow in his heart. That pained me to see and I do so hope he will take strength from knowing that churches are precious but it is the congregation that is the true church. Ukraine I am sure will build such beautiful churches after her victory. Cultural history gets handed down through the generations - we never lose it even if someone thinks they have stolen it from us. But you know that, Johnny.
Thank you so much for taking us with you.
I love the serenity and the calmness when inside churches. That is what makes them a place of sanctity and refuge.
russia commits the hugest of sins, and larger sins when their war causes so much death and destruction, especially bringing destruction to God's house, as our priests used to call sacred buildings.

There is two theologically identical but organizationally separate Orthodox churches in Ukraine: Church loyal to Kyiv Patriarchate and Church loyal to Moscow Patriarchate.
I want to add some historical context:
Over centuries Kyiv was religious hub for Eastern Slavs and thus Patriarch of Kyiv was senior Orthodox leader. But in 1589, Patriarch of Constantinople Jeremias II travelled to Moscow and was pressured to consecrate Patriarch Job of Moscow as the Eastern Orthodox All-Rus Patriarch. This was contentious action because Patriarch Jeremias II was exiled from Constantinople (taken by Turks) and had little choice but to do what Tsar in Moscow wanted.
Hence primacy of Patriarch of Moscow is based solely on legally dubious act done 400+ years ago. In other words, this religious-administrative conflict is not invented by ‘Ukrainian nationalists’ or ‘Zelensky’ but actually predates first trip of Pilgrims to North America.

Hi Johnny. I never passed by an opportunity to go inside a church in Ukraine. There’s even s Shul in Kiev, near a restaurant (tee-hee)churches are all over. Lviv’s old town area is full of them. Many have fameous-miraculus icons, according to believers. There are icon ‘writing’ centers that are interesting to visit. Current folks making icons, even guilding with gold leaf. You also may enjoy visiting a few museums: artwork, handcrafts, antique items. Right near the Lavra is a military museum from WWII with fantastic statuary. The tall lady, like our statue of liberty loverlooks the military grounds. They recently put a trident on her shield removing a scythe. Also in Kiev is a museum of the Chernoble disaster. Ukraine has two Lavras. The other is in the Western part.

    • @StevenKeery
      @StevenKeery 7 місяців тому

Bigwombat: Much of this veneration of relics stems from the Christian Crusades.
Those who fought in the Crusades were forgiven their sins by the Pope. As time went on, not everyone was healthy or strong enough to go and fight, but they could pay money towards supporting the Crusades. In return they gained Papal indulgences and remissions from their sins.
This carried on to selling relics ie. Splinters and fragments from the wooden cross that Jesus was crucified on and bones of the Saints and items touched by the Saints.
Pilgrimages were made from far and wide to visit such 'holy shrines' were Saints were buried.
Some of these Pilgrimages are still popular to this day in places. Santiago de Compestella in Spain and the Pilgrimage to where Thomas a Beckett was murdered by Knights on the instructions of Henry II.
Religion and politics have always been intertwined unfortunately.

22:49 do you wanna know why "they're too nice"? Because ukrainian "religion"(ПЦУ) is the minority, while russian "religion"(УПЦ МП) is the mainstream. The authorities are afraid because they know that people don't like when state's politicians interfere with religion. I am from Transcarpathian region(Закарпаття), and during this war only three churches in my 1mln+ people region moved/changed they status onto ukrainian "religion"(ПЦУ). While the rest remain as it was. For me for example - I am used to making my prayings in OldChurched-Slavic language, and I have no desire to do it in ukrainian, because its not natural for me and other majority of people.
You know too little, mate. The narrative you propagate - is the propaganda of radical minority that are trying to make it look like it represents the whole ukrainian population.

We are currently voting at our local Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Protection of the Holy Theotokos Parish) about whether or not to change our calendar (to be in line with other Orthodox Churches such as the Greeks, Bulgarians..) I personally know many people (Priests included) who are choosing to abstain, mainly as I understood out of not wanting to involve politics with religion, but here we are.
Today was one of the most special holidays in our Church, Pokrova. It was the Feast Day of the Intercession (or Protection) of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, and also the day of Ukrainian Kozakdom, as the Kozaks always had the Virgin Mary as their patroness and protector. Either we will celebrate on the 1 October, which to me would personally be amazing since then I would celebrate this beautiful feast day every year coinciding with my birthday (and the Church New Year would be 1 September, my Name Day) or it will continue to be celebrated on 14 October. I believe in Ukraine they have already moved that date of Pokrova to 1 October, but traditionally some of my friends who are also patriots celebrated today.
We are in a very strange period now, where the Russian church thinks that Kyiv is their most important religious city (it always was, and they lost that claim after all of their atrocities in history against our nation) and Ukraine having to both defend itself in real life as well as sustain attacks from misinformed people commenting on current events (like Tucker).
My apologies for my longwinded, all over the place comment, and I want to show my gratitude to you Johnny for visiting this holy place for our Ukrainian Orthodox community. Safe travels and take care. SLAVA.

I can't believe they let you film inside the caves. I've been there many times in the upper and lower caves, and it was always frowned upon taking photos in there. Looks like you were in the lower caves. Let me know when you find the "dragon" caves in Kyiv.

Do they still have the orphanage in the Lavra? The wailing children still haunt me. I will never forget at the end of a very hot day, the young boy who walked around with a big sack and gave the Lavra beggers some corn. Do they still beg at the Lavra?

What's a fake. There are no and there were no russian priests. All priesthood are from Ukraine, Ukrainian citizens. Ukrainian Orthodox Church is separated from russian one from 1991. The very first day Ukrainian Orthodox church condemned russian invasion
Lavra is being now raided and turned into museum but it is and it was from the very beginning a monastery. Monks and orthodox people dis everything here. But now it's almost empty. It's not good.
