My great-grandparents were from Transcarpathia and came to Pennsylvania US in the late 1800s. This was such a nice video for me to reconnect with my roots. The food looks delicious. Reminds me of holidays at Baba’s house. They weren’t Latin Catholic or Orthodox, they were Greek Catholic. They didn’t speak Polish, Slovak, Hungarian or Ukrainian yet their language had elements of all of them. They referred to themselves as Rusyns
I’m so thankful to be born in Transcarpathia 🙏 we still have sirens and people are nervous, but it’s quite safe for now. Doing our best to help all the refugees coming here from the East of Ukraine

I travelled through Zakarpattia in 2007 en route from Prague to Lviv by train. I long to go back to this fascinating region full of gorgeous countryside that reminded me of the Borders in my native Scotland. Your video reminded me of the Chop to Lviv stretch of the train journey, with longer stops at certain stations, allowing passengers to get off and stretch their legs for a bit. It was an incredibly relaxing experience, a chance to observe rural life and take in amazing scenery. Incidentally, my Ukrainian ex-next door neighbour is from Mukachevo, and he co-owns an Italian restaurant near where I live. I should ask him if he can cook Ukrainian dishes, which I love, as well. :-) Here in the Czech Republic there's a huge Ukrainian community, and Ukraine is on my mind all the time. Transcarpathia is not "influenced" by Hungary but it it created by Hungary and were part of it for a thousand year. The cities of Ungvár, Munkács, Nagyszőlős or Máramarossziget (Sighet in Romania) are all County Seats of the Vármegye Systems. Vármegye is the name of Hungarian "oblasts" which is encirced around a castle, (vár). Vár can be noticed in many Hungarian city names which is the "horod" in Ukrainian. The origins of Hungarians aren't clear yet, but it is important that Slavs also originated in Asia, the today "Asian" term as we use now as a race, not not passed through the Himalaya until Genghis Khan. Central Asia looked European, and this is why Hungarians considered Europeans. The deeds of Hungarian Kingdom not just a sovereign part of European history, but part of the greatest empires between X-XVI. Centuries. The Hungarians are part of the Scythian culture which used this territory well before 896, such as the Carpathian Avars or the jointed forces of Atilla who took his epicenter of his empire in later Hungary.

The Transcarpathian region of the Ukraine (Kárpátalja) was not only “heavily influenced historically from Hungary” as the guy says in the video, it actually was part of the Kingdom of Hungary for a thousand years before 1920. I don’t get why it is so difficult to just be exact on historical facts instead of mingling-mangling.

Orest, it was good to see Vasyl again, thanks for including him in this video. Also Martha, hello Martha, it's always good to see you and Orest together. It helps us see something that looks normal. It just started snowing here in Onamia, MN, USA again this afternoon. A week ago there was 1 foot to 3 feet of snow all over the ground but it had warmed up and was raining last night and this morning so the snow was 99% gone. The ground is white again. I met a new Facebook friend yesterday, a lady living in this town, and she and I went to school together as kids. Her husband died of Covid last November
Sorry, my keyboard goes crazy showing a different character than the key pressed, so I'm back. Martha, My family, grandmothers and my mother and myself fry up potato pancakes from time to time too. What is the white gravy or sauce over the top of yours? So I was telling of my friend who's husband passed away, we're both looking forward to seeing each other face to face soon. Speaking of face to face, I asked my brother, who's house am living in, if we could consider offering a place here in this house for Ukrainians who need a home. Always wanted to visit my ancestral home. One day. Very beautiful and similar to Alberta, Canada where I grew up. Oh and Andriy Vasylenko recommended your channel.
Very beautiful land & city, thank you for the lovely tour. Andriy suggested your channel & very happy to subscribe :) (Ukraine becoming closer with Europe? 🤔 If it can be done without sacrificing unique culture & history, like Hungary did, then yes, it may be an excellent idea.)
As an American with some Hungarian Ancestry, I'm biased towards Hungary. From what I've read, though, and seen on UA-cam, life looks alot better in Hungary. You would think locals would prefer to be part of Hungary, safely in EU and NATO instead of poor Ukraine.
Great video! As for the shift to a Latin based alphabet for Ukraine, I don’t think it’ll make any difference. Greece has its own for example. I like the different languages and alphabets around the World. 👍
It was a great video. I am watching you from Hungary and I need to tell you that despite the fact that the relationship between the two countries was not the most perfect (thanks for the politicians...) but the people here are supporting Ukraine. We are doing everything we can to help those who have fled to Hungary. I hope your dad arrived in Budapest safely. When the war ends, I hope the relationship between the two countries will be much better. We are stronger together. :) слава українi!
Tibor J. Maybe you could assist concerning my question that the ethnic Hungarian citizens of Kárpátalja have been declared as NO 2 enemy of Ukraine by the AZOV agency of the Ukrainian Government. Előre is köszönöm.
@@tiborjuhasz3217 I just got told off by my fellow Hungarian friend, - j. Tibor - in no uncertain way, allegedly, for an act of "incitement" or "war mongering". I just do not know against who I am supposed to be inciting against, just because I innocently did ask for your help or assistance to clarify whether "ethic Hungarian citizens of Transcarpathia/Kárpátalja have been declared as NO 2 enemy of Ukraine by either the Ukrainian Government or their AZOV agents who are in any case, part of the Government". You simply responded "nobody is interested in your incitement/war mongering, have a nice day". I just cannot reconcile what I should do in such circumstance, should I apologies on behalf of the Ukrainian Government for incitement against their own Ethnic Hungarian citizens, or better still should I just shut - up, because of the Sovereignty of the Ukrainian State, who has every right to oppress, terrorize, or commit the act of incitement against their own Ethnic Minorities, in this case against the ethnic Hungarians. Please help me, these people only represent 0.2% of the total population. I do not want to cause any incitement or war mongering, Hungarians do not want War, we just want to help, and stay out of this conflict, especially when it is so close to our borders, next door. We are willing and able to help all the refugees coming from Ukraine, without any limit on their numbers, so please do understand, we only have good will to assist all who need help. Going back to my original question, I just want to find out what is the actual truth? Has the Ukrainian Government or their agents actually issued this serious charge, against all the ethnic Hungarians living in Transcarpathia/Kárpátalja in that they are the "No 2 Enemy of Ukraine?" Is this statement True or is it False? Or somebody within the Government is acting without any authority? In any case something here is not quite right. Tibor, you probably have no clues about Stephan Bandera, a Ukrainian Nationalist and his past involvements in various atrocities, nor do you want to know about the AZOV elements of Ukraine Government who are causing to this day a great hurt, and acts of humiliation against your own brothers in Ukraine. Instead you just want to attack me a fellow Hungarian. (A kérdésemre nem válaszoltál hanem jól megtámadtál, micsoda egy hazafi vagy te?)
All of Ukraine is absolutely beautiful, and each region is super special, praise God, however I cannot deny...Transcarpathia and the general far west of the country is very unique. All of the beautiful nature and the Western/Central European architecture of cities like Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kosiv, Uzhhorod are so distinct. It is almost hard to describe. It's just a beautiful region...then there's the colorful Hutsul people! I would LOVE to taste local products (and Lviv chocolate and coffee, of course)😮
The pot is called Bogrács, the food in it is Pörkölt which is common Hungarian food. Again, this area is different from Ukraine both culturally and historically.
Martin Thank you for informing everybody about Bogrács which has nothing to do with our Gypsy friends. I hope no one will slap you down for the fact for daring to say that it is Hungarian food. I do not wish to be provocative but I just heard very recently that the Hungarian Community in Transcarpathia/Kárpátalja which represents 0.2% of the total population of Ukraine has been declared as No 2 worst enemy of Ukraine after the Russian speaking community. Would any one please confirm this news item coming from the AZOV agency of the Ukrainian Government.
Thank you so much for this video. You are a fabulous host and educator. I am totally in favor of a one alphabet system. Since I speak only English, one alphabet would make travel to your area and the Far East much easier. While spending a couple of weeks in Kyoto, I felt crippled by not being able to read or even write down any of the signage written in Japanese. There is a funny story told by Harpo Marx of the famous Marx Brothers comedy team. While they were appearing in Russia, he got a laugh when he saw his name on the theater marquee. Instead of the usual spelling in English (Harpo Marx) the Russian alphabet spelling of his name is pronounced something like "Zapno Mapcase".
Even though we are also part of Europe we too have a different alphabet in Greece! While it is very unique I do really like the idea of sharing a Latin based alphabet as this will make travel and communication more fluid between the countries of Europe! i would love to see the look on Putins face if and when Ukraine begins to integrate with European written language 😁
Yes, we do agree, the safest place in Ukraine is Czechoslovakia ( Subcarpathian Ruthenia ). Transcarpathia is the false name invented in Moscow, when Stalin had stolen our Podkarpatska Rus - Subcarpathian Ruthenia. But we are still Carpathian Ruthenians, a small central-european nation, the third nation among state nations of Czechoslovakia - Czechs, Slovaks, Rusyns. We hope Ukraine will be European Union member as soon as possible. We wish you all the best!
Such diverse geography and culture. Thank you for sharing parts of Ukraine we don't see. It really is a wonderful country. Still hard to reconcile the evil Putin has brought on this benign people.
I’m not sure if everything is so benign in the Ukraine. Hungarians living in Transcarpathia have been compared to dogs by a Ukrainian linguist. She said dogs could learn instructions like ‘sit’, ‘stay’ etc. in 7 days, whereas the dumb Hungarians cannot learn the ‘beautiful Ukrainian language’ in 7 years. Why would we need them, why would we spend money on them, she said. It’s on video. She had a go on other minorities as well. She must have forgotten that Transcarpathia and the Hungarians there belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary for a thousand years. I can easily believe that a lot of malicious attack have happened on the Russian minority as well. I’m sorry to be a bit negative but to be delusional is not a good thing.
I am from Serbia, at the end you mentioned we use Latin letters. Our main letters are Cyrilic, we have also Cyrilo and Medthodie. My passport is in Cyrilic, official things, but also we write latin. Its not because of joining European Union in which we will never join because they do not want us. Latin we know and use because was in Yugoslavia.
Greetings from Ireland☘️. What a lovely city and area. Very interesting to watch your video. Thoughts with all Ukrainians, particularly those who are most affected by the war, the refugees, and the army and humanitarian people organizing the daily food and medical needs and not forgetting too those helping the animals. May war end soon and the Russian army go back to Russia.
Very fine and informative video, despite all you are going through. GOD Protect you and your Family and All Ukrainians! I view video reports every day and it is heartbreaking what is happening. Such unspeakable Evil and Atrocities being committed by one Demonic man against your People and Sovereign Ukraine?! May the bloodshed and massive destruction be brought to a halt as soon as possible, and this Evil man be brought to Justice.

@@zuborest sorry to answer this late, algorithm can be real bad. Ruthenians are not Ukrainens just in the ethnicity vote there is no opinion for vote to be Ruthenian because the Ukraninen governments somewhy dont consider them a different nationality
innocent fact check: Cyril&Methodeus did not invent/introduce Cyrilic script. They invented/introduced Glagolic script, which is completely different from Cyrilic. The Cyrilic was developed much later by disciples of Cyril and named in honor of Cyril..... but that is the only connection of Cyrilic to Cyril&Methodeus
No, it was once and the People there have many Origins like, Romanians, Ukrainians, and Hungarians and over the Centuries they even developed their own culture and Dialect (its more like an own Language) and most people are Ukrainians and they see themselves as Ukrainians. Very beautiful land & city, thank you for the lovely tour. Andriy suggested your channel & very happy to subscribe :)
(Ukraine becoming closer with Europe? 🤔 If it can be done without sacrificing unique culture & history, like Hungary did, then yes, it may be an excellent idea.)
It's absolutely possible
Transcarpathia is HUNGARY! Never Ukraine!
It should be independent because we have our own culture.
Slovakia and no fckng Hungary
As an American with some Hungarian Ancestry, I'm biased towards Hungary. From what I've read, though, and seen on UA-cam, life looks alot better in Hungary. You would think locals would prefer to be part of Hungary, safely in EU and NATO instead of poor Ukraine.
Thank you foe this video very interesting!!
Hungary help the Ukranian refugees what the Ukrain state thanks us with dehungarisation of Zakarpatia...
discovered your channel coz of Andriy's..👍
Great video! As for the shift to a Latin based alphabet for Ukraine, I don’t think it’ll make any difference. Greece has its own for example. I like the different languages and alphabets around the World. 👍
Yeah. But Greece is not sucked into any other culture
Hi Orest! My names mark from wales in the UK . Enjoyed your video, good information about transkarpathia . Have you visited Uzhorod at all??
Great video take care!
Great video, keep up the good work! 🇭🇺 ♥ 🇺🇦
слава українi!
Awesome video. I hope to visit Mukachevo, Uzhorod and Lviv sometime, hopefully with all of their beauty untouched by war.
Tibor J. Maybe you could assist concerning my question that the ethnic Hungarian citizens of Kárpátalja have been declared as NO 2 enemy of Ukraine by the AZOV agency of the Ukrainian Government. Előre is köszönöm.
@@hunguy3280 Senkit nem érdekel az uszításod. Szép napot.
We'll manage to find a common language. Thanks for your support
I'd be really interested in more information on the Rusyns. Maybe seeing some sites
Ukraine is so beautifil! 😍 Thank you for showing us around! Greetings from the other side of the world! 👍
He-he! I know what are you talking about.
My name in Ukrainian is - ОРЕСТ ЗУБ
This territory will return to Hungary
Such diverse geography and culture. Thank you for sharing parts of Ukraine we don't see. It really is a wonderful country. Still hard to reconcile the evil Putin has brought on this benign people.
Ukraine has much more to show
I’m not sure if everything is so benign in the Ukraine.
Google says transcarpathia historically belongs to hungary.
True but we have our own culture. We aren't Ukrainian but the Ukrainian government is trying to take away our culture.
Because it does. It was part of the Kingdom of Hungary for a thousand years.
Desde Andalucía 🇪🇸👍🙏🕊️🌍🇺🇦🌻
Stay strong Ukraine 🇺🇦 💪🏻
God will be you ✅
Greetings from Ireland☘️.
Very nice Good job 👍👍
We will definitely come visit Ukraine after all these videos.
welcome
Very fine and informative video, despite all you are going through. GOD Protect you and your Family and All Ukrainians! I view video reports every day and it is heartbreaking what is happening. Such unspeakable Evil and Atrocities being committed by one Demonic man against your People and Sovereign Ukraine?! May the bloodshed and massive destruction be brought to a halt as soon as possible, and this Evil man be brought to Justice.
The look of your father getting in the car to leave would be like me. What is my son up to now?
A szívünk szakad meg Kárpátaljáért!
And my father Leonard Nimoy is also joining us.
In school we first learned Cyrilic, than after Latin, Cyrilic is traditional Serbian.
In Deutschland kreist gerade ein Video mit vielen neuen Häusern die sehr modern sind oder wie kleine Schlösser gebaut wurden. Wer baut sich solche Luxus Buden? 😮
She’s beautiful!
The Cyrillic alphabet is our patrimony. There is no need to change this.
Hi , Transcarpathia was Hungary we they are Hungarian.....CCCP gave it to Ukraine....do t talk wrong things.... please
God bless Ukraine!💙💛💙💛
Did an ancestry dna. Thought that I was only Hungarian /Polish. Nope. Ukrainian, Transcarpathian, Russian, Jewish, German and Norwegian all part of me.
I was thinking about buying real estate in the Carpathians. Do you think the Dachas have increased in price since Western Ukraine is safer?
Looks like it
You can contact me I'm local person
Glory to Ukraine!
Ahh u mean hungary
Us Transcarpathians stand against Ukraine. Free the Rusyns.
who sad that
@@sergejmanowjak2131 Me
This place was ruled by hungarians 897-1920 / 1939-1945 the ukrainean ssr only got this territory as a gift from the soviet union. The people living here are carpathian ruthenians NOT ukraineans 😳
ruthenians = ukraineans
The Cyrilic was developed much later by disciples of Cyril and named in honor of Cyril..... but that is the only connection of Cyrilic to Cyril&Methodeus
true
Can't wait for this war to be over, for ukraine to be okay again, and to visit this beautiful country. I want to see this area first!
welcome
zakarpatia the old hungarian soil...will be again
When Beavis and Butthead are combined.
This area was part of Czechoslovakia at one time.
For a short time after it was taken away from the Kingdom of Hungary where it belonged to for a thousand years till 1920.
Why you didnt make a movie when you bombing dnr for 8 years
Iys a Hungarian area, with no diversity, thats why it's safe.
It's basially still part of Hungary.
No, it was once and the People there
have many Origins like, Romanians,
Ukrainians, and Hungarians and over
the Centuries they even developed their
own culture and Dialect (its more like
an own Language) and most people are
Ukrainians and they see themselves as
Ukrainians. So I'd say they are rather
Ukrainians
