- Summary and personal views
Milan, Italy in 6 September to 11 September 1880 - ‘The Milan Conference’ was the first international conference of deaf educators.
Over 50% of those invited where oralist and therefore the Conference was bias
From 164 delegates only, James Denison, was deaf.
Oral method preferred passed 160 to 4
Delegates from the United States and Britain were the only ones who opposed the use of oralism as a sole method of instruction
In the UK - The Education Act (1893) officially banned the use of sign language in education.
Wow wonderful summary of the famous Milan 1880. I’m undergoing IBSL level 4 lingustics before becoming teacher myself. I’m deaf myself so I find your videos a wonderful examples.
I am learning BSL,
Very nice video, shame it hasn't got any subtitles.
It would help to understand more and clarify some of the signing words better.
I used to be at Boston spa school where BSL was banned
Thanks. A useful summary.
Can't believe the ratio of deaf to hearing at that conference! 😡
Talk about bias!
