"Waiting for that feeling" - the feeling to be with people again? Hugging your loved one? The feeling of that vaccination?! We are almost there! What a turbulent year it's been - we hope this song can bring you joy and hope as we start to come out the other side. But for now, as we hold out that little bit longer: "Come on, come on, come on! Get through this!" - and remember "love's the greatest thing".
"Tender" by Blur is a song of a fragile mind - which I'm sure we can relate to after a challenging year. We were inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night over the Rhone painting, which is featured in this video. The song is about Blur's frontman Damon Albarn’s breakup with musician turned painter Justine Frischmann; we featured her paintings as well.
Featuring 31 singers from around the world - and musicians from Bristol, where ChoirCast began. Everyone involved filmed themselves at home on their phones. This is also the most soloists we have had in a ChoirCast video (a total of 15) so congratulations to them!

Story of how the theme of Tender came about, by our editor, Martin:
"I bought a copy of the classic novel ‘Tender is the Night’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I knew the title was the inspiration for the song’s title and its first line and I thought I might get some hints from the content. Actually I did - but I would only realise that later.
Next, I turned to the lyrics of the song to see if there was anything beyond the fist line that might give me some inspiration. The line ‘Lord I need to find someone who can heal my mind’ would prove to make an interesting connection. The line suggested someone might be having issues with their mental health!
Then I looked at the book again. Its front cover design was an art deco style painting of a sweeping bay somewhere on the French Riviera where the book is set. I liked the look of it and thought that it was a potential background image for the video. But it was a daytime scene and I needed it to be a night image, so I started to search for something similar painted at night. I found it. It was a painting called ‘Starry Night over the Rhone’ by Vincent Van Gogh.
And there was the first connection. If ever there was an artist who had issues with his mental health it was Van Gogh!
Then I returned to story of the song and learned that it was written by the four band members about Blur frontman Damon Albarn’s breakup with musician turned painter Justine Frischmann.
And there was the second connection. I had another painter in the mix! Two people with broken minds, and two painters!
So the video features details of Van Gogh paintings with his deep yellows and blues and some Justine Frischmann paintings. I suppose at one level the use of these images might be a subtle reference to the artist’s often fragile state of mind. I think the song suggests that too.
    Here's some trivia for you....
Did you know that the word ‘Tender’ only occurs 4 times in the song?
    There are 8 ‘Oh why’s’,
    10 ‘Oh my’s’,
    10 ‘Oohs’ ,
    24 ‘Come on’s’ and
    24 ‘Oh My baby’s'.
You can’t accuse me of not researching this thoroughly!"
