I was also diagnosed with GD at 26weeks. I was able to control it with just diet, I did not take the insulin medication. If managed properly it goes away after birth. Mine went away immediately I put to bed, my baby was tested immediately after birth and she didn’t contact it. Please make sure you get tested again at your 6weeks appointment. Love and hugs to you mama. The Lord is your strength.

The best place to get professional advice on diet for disease conditions especially when it has to do with diabetes, a professional Registered Dietitian in your locality is your best bet, there are a variety of African meals one with diabetes can take,
Seeing a dietitian after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes should be a priority, trust me it will really help you plan your meals with what is available to you.

Those needles though. In Nigeria they do this too depending on the hospital. And yes high sugar and high BP kills children in the womb. But after delivery follow up is important because it can linger on

You’re doing great sweet mama!! I experienced GD with my 2nd and 3rd(last) baby. For the 2nd it was detected at 33 weeks and for the 3rd at 24 weeks. I believe I had GD with my first pregnancy but was never detected. Because I had to deliver him via cs urgently because it was detected he was dying , thanks be to God! Because I would have lost him if they had not taken him out before his due date. It was after my 2nd baby that I realised that I might have had GD in my 1st pregnancy but it was never detected. I’m in Ghana. I managed my pregnancies with metformin ,insulin and healthy eating . It wasn’t easy at all but knowing that I was keeping my baby healthy and safe was all that I needed to keep me going. God will see you through as he saw me through in Jesus name!!

They checked for it during my pregnancy, I know some women in my ANC that theirs was detected cos the hospital ensured we carried out certain test if they notice any red flag after vitals signs were checked. It was expensive though cos sometimes I spent between 3k-7k to run test minus routine drugs. It is well, thank God the doctors detected it on time. I pray for a smooth and safe delivery for you and our beautiful angel.

I was also diagnosed with gestational with my last baby. I am glad you got to know about it and you are taking the right step to control it.. it is something that can be managed, If detected early and I agree with you because my sister in-law lost a baby while pregnant in Nigeria and in similar situations as yours. She had a baby here in the US the following year and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and had a healthy full term baby. Also note that a great percentage of those who had gestational diabetes are likely to develop diabetes. So just manage weight and what you eat.

Hello mama, welldone you are doing a great job 💪🏽. Gestational diabetes can detected in many hospitals in Nigeria, especially teaching hospitals. I don't know where your previous hospital is but most teaching hospitals or women and children hospitals with Ob/Gynae specialist Doctors can easily detect. This time around will be different by His grace

Thanks for the response. Those private hospitals are only doing business. I can hardly use their facility no matter how good it is except some few good ones in Lagos which is not cheap. As a registered Nurse, despite the whole stress in teaching Hospital, I prefer teaching Hospital services. Gestational diabetes, Eclampsia etc are common cases in Nigeria not necessarily with women who are obese.

Firstly, there is something called history taken in the hospital which gives your provider a clue of what you may experience or not.(some diseases runs in families e.g hypertension, diabetes)
Urinalysis is a routine check for all pregnant women.
Before we crucify our country😄some of us just go to any hospital we see not minding who the provider is.
Secondly some of you mothers when you are being told to do some test you complain of money and even dictate for the doctor on what to do. I trained in government hospital and worked in a strict gynecology clinic before I relocated hence my analysis 😅.
In all, being pregnant or not let's try to eat healthy!

They were very helpful in guiding me towards healthy weight control for myself and my baby, I don't know how the health care system is in the uk but you should as your doctor to recommend you to all three of the above mentioned. I saw someone commented that gestational diabetes go away after the baby is born, that's not always the case. Take care of yourself and your unborn and do your research diligently. Well done mama. I wish you and the baby good health and safe delivery. That your doctor in naija's comment hmm.
Well! I had two kids in Nigeria and for both pregnancies, I was monitored for GD and high blood pressure and with my second, the picked hypertension at 18weeks and was managed properly till I gave birth.
The hospital I used were particular about the results of the urine sample we take before our classes begin and as the pregnancy advanced, they did a particular glucose test( can't remember what it was called and the week). If that doctor is right, then I think it is either the policy of the hospital you used or the man was lying. Sincerely, some of them are careless I had one who gave me a med that causes miscarriage thankfully I did my research and didn't take it.

You are a strong lady, and I appreciate you encouraging women who are going through this, however I really hope you saw a registered dietitian not just a doctor, and also try adding vegetables to every meal, that's a secret with controlling sugar levels, taking vegetables with every meal...
Then also you can also switch to skimmed milk instead unless the one you used here is skimmed..
Then please, see a dietitian very important...
One with gestational diabetes can also run low sugar too, so it's quite a delicate situation and diet is very important so that after birth it goes away..
    Well done ma.

Urinalysis is very unreliable because the pregnant woman may come into antenatal clinic in the morning after fasting overnight and not having breakfast. In this case, her urinalysis may be clear. Now, if the same woman had a midnight meal/snack and even breakfast before coming to antenatal clinic, her urinalysis will most likely detect glucose. So you see why Glucose tolerance test should be mandatory for every pregnant woman? Thanks for opening up this conversation. It’ll definitely benefit someone
