Totally agree about corner names. It is criminal in my mind that turn 5 at Laguna Seca isn't named after Nicky Hayden. The years he won there he was visibly riding harder through that corner than anyone in the world. One of the racers with the most personality and a world champion deserves as much.
Keith is right. BSB has been consistently providing the absolute best racing in the world for several years now. Two of the greatest motorcycle races of all time have now both happened at Brands Hatch in BSB (2011 & 2024)
I was lucky enough to work at the MotoGP at Phillip Island back in 2019. I'm a half Irish half French aka half alcoholic half racist (just kidding) 31 year old dude who has been a fan since my dad introduced me to the sport over 20 years ago. And that was the 1st race I ever attended and the atmosphere was amazing. And I was lucky enough to meet my idol's dad (Marco Simoncelli's dad) I also got to sneak into the pits one day, got caught the 2nd. I think that was the happienst I have ever been because now i am stuck back in France lol, but I did attend the Le Mans MotoGP this year which was my 2nd eer race in person. Love your work you lot, please keep it up. Peace out x
Hello Renita and Keith, My Mother and Father knew Ken Kavenagh before he went to Europe, later becoming a Works rider for Moto Guzzi. He, along with English riders Bill Lomas and Dickie Dale, raced the Moto Guzzi 500 V8, amongst other great bikes from that manufacturer. As far as naming a corner at Phillip Island circuit after Wayne Gardner, I think turn 12. It is more difficult than it appears and takes a lot of commitment, something Wayne Gardner was never short of. Cheers from Victoria, Australia.
Hi Relta and Keith. I remember seeing this young kid wipe the floor with every rider at a wet Cadwell park .that rider was Casey Stoner and he was incredible,15 or 16 years old.incredible. Great podcast keep up the good work. Richard.
I live in Melbourne Keith but I’m from Ireland, the speeding laws are so strict here, if you blink and miss a sign or go over the limit for a very small amount of time you get a massive fine in the post as well as points on you license it’s very strict! Great podcast, can’t wait for the racing 🏁
Wayne said, " Anyone can go through a slow corner fast, but only the best can go through a fast corner fast." The last triple left balls out corner onto the now Gardner straight would work. Is it currently named at all?
My first thought was Gardener loop But that was where I watched him win the first Australian motorcycle Grand prix I can still hear the roar that followed him around the track
Oh contraire my Amigo, tell that to no other than John Kosinski of which he went around the outside of in similar fashion at Misano that year . . . luridly sideways !
Ducati is so dominant in 2024 that if the GP23s were racing under another Constructor's name (like Panigale) they would be second in the Constructors Championship Ducati >>> 554 pontos Panigale >>> 359 KTM >>> 275 Aprilia >>> 255 Yamaha >>> 97 Honda >>> 56
if it doesnt already have a name fine, but ive always hated it when they renamed corner. I prefer corners named after things nearby than riders too, like the hayshed. naming corners after riders is just unimaginative and could be used for any corner on any track, unless said rider has some connection specifically to that corner.
Ok, first up corner names. I agree wholeheartedly with Keith on the “appropriateness” of the relevant corner to the rider selected. Stoner corner is a perfect example. Doohan corner is also on the money but I am afraid I do not agree with Miller corner. Jack is no better there than most other racers. While on the subject of riders who leave an indelible mark on a circuit I would love to see the whole circuit renamed “Circuit Gregg Hansford”. Gregg did the track testing and was the most notable advisor to redesigning the surface layout and profiling to suit bike racing. PI is the only Tier 1 circuit in the world that I am aware of that was specifically designed for motorcycle racing. Sadly Gregg died at Doohan Corner in a car race. His mark has been left on the Track for evermore and as I said above I believe the circuit should be named in honour of the only racer to ever win Bathurst on two wheels and four. Secondly, the whole Chinese sponsorship fiasco must be looked at in a political sense not a sponsorship sense. And, to do that some understanding of current Chinese politics must be involved. The whole concept of a political monopoly is that there is no questioning of the monopoly, ever. There is only one indisputable view of anything and that is the view of the monopoly. It is perfectly normal to distract the population from any failings or even minor blemishes by distraction of demonising an opponent or innocent third party. Much the same way as North Korea rants and raves about America being the great evil China has had tilts at Australia, America, and the Philippines. But over the past ten years the fires of hatred towards Japan have been relit and fanned so I am surprised that Gresini did not foresee or even seek advice from their Chinese Sponsor prior to Motegi. That said, Gresini being Italian, is probably woefully under informed on the knife edge Asia is balanced on at present. Again, Dorna should be all over this and as a professional organisation their insensitivity to anything outside of Europe or more particularly Spain is evident. On another note, I do not agree with Keith’s opinion that Dorna have done a great job in growing the sport worldwide. They took the easy route and picked the low hanging fruit in Spain and took no notice of the sport withering on the vine in the rest of the world. In Australia in the seventies and eighties we regularly had crowds of 70k at National Championship race meetings. The sport all but died in the USA and is still gasping for breath. As an example Superbike racing started at the now long gone Amaroo Park in Sydney and then six months later in the USA. This year only one WSBK race meeting was held outside of Europe, only one American and one Australian are competing in the series because of the whole “Europe is the world” view held by Dorna. Exposure equals interest and a paying public. By not exposing racing to the world, disinterest grows and permeates across the demographic. Dorna’s failure to develop a class of racing that is relevant in developing Asia is almost an icon of stupidity. Keith, you spend more time in Thailand than I do, have you ever been to a more petrol headed country? Those people will race anything! Boats, cars AND bikes. Ok, speed vented.
We have had 8 months since the WSBK round where we saw what can happen with the tires on this new surface. Any serious anomalies this weekend is a massive failure with all of the time they have had to test. TEST!!!
Yes absolutely if honour a rider u can't just call it Pepsi corner I thought lame too call Gardner straight mind you did great drive of last corner won on that part
I remember Wayne Gardner winning first one am sure was in April it's spring know down under think weather be okay it's on the coast though think it's bass strait .am new Zealand I never been .
@@patrickmalone9380 Hello Patrickmalone, Yes you are correct, the first Australian Motorcycle GP was in April, 1989, in very pleasant weather. The 1990 event was September from memory and first practice for 125 GP was cancelled after more than one rider was blown off the track! I was standing at Lukey Heights and it was difficult to stand still, such was the wind. By the time the 500's came out it was from memory less of a problem but still unpleasantly windy. Later when 250's came out I think it had moderated a little more. Then it went to Eastern Creek till 1996, back to the Island in 1997. In 1998 it was October, and all 3 days were fairly good weather wise. I have riden on that circuit, only at club level, in most months over nearly 9 years, and Autumn is in my opinion the most desirable time, though sometimes a little cool. I suppose there are logistical issues I do not understand, and probably nearing the end of the season with the title battles becoming clearer, it is more exciting to stage it in Spring nearer other fly away rounds, but Autumn weather would likely be more benign I think. The weather coming in off Bass Strait can be unpredictable and unpleasant, hopefully not as bad this year as Sunday last year. Definitely a good idea to take warm and waterproof clothing. As a New Zealander I hope you have been watching the Women's Circuit Racing World Championship this year. Avalon Lewis put in a good performance recently and Australian Tayla Relph is currently 7th in the title chase after some good results, one 3rd and a little bad luck as well.
Good on Grassini for backing it's Rider! Tell 🇨🇳 to suck it! They know & count on Greed being so Prevalent so are willing to provide truck loads of CASH in turn for selling your morality.. Most Do! NFL, NBA , HOLLYWOOD, SOCIAL MEDIA, etc & they MOST OFTEN have no problem getting their knees dirty & mouthwash handy.. Hopefully Grassini dump the sponsor altogether because it will always be that expectation for atleast a reach around on demand
Jesus, can you give up on the anti-Victoria BS. Okay, you got a fine one time. I can't tell you the last time I got a ticket here. That said, love the rest of your comments Keith!
Manifoeld where held wsbk final in first two years Fred Merkel remember him they used have sheep grazing infield keep grass tidy I saw know Ducati boss crash his bimota on warming up lap trow away his title hopes

Always appreciate a response like this! Thank you for taking the time. T12 is def more appropriate!
BSB,a full season, and it came down to 150m...amazing racing!

I love Wayne Gardner he was so detirminded my hero him and freddy
Just to wind up the Ozzies. What about Crosbie Corner, and Anderson Loop. (Hint - think NZ)

Looks to me that QJ wanted to pull out but needed an excuse... Like You said, there were multiple options to resolve the issue.
Sitting on a balcony in Dubia pair boxers on not pretty site love it
Glad you said sitting miss read it first time
My first thought was Gardener loop
But that was where I watched him win the first Australian motorcycle Grand prix
I can still hear the roar that followed him around the track
There’s only one Aussie legend to name turn 12 at Phillip Island after & that’s Anthony Gobert . . .
A character that’s for sure, but best overall 4th in suberbike WC, he got his reputation more for his off track antics
Oh contraire my Amigo, tell that to no other than John Kosinski of which he went around the outside of in similar fashion at Misano that year . . . luridly sideways !

Another great one in the can.
Bayliss, Corser and Vermuelen really all need a corner named after them, turn 11 and 12 are still unamed
FFS, it was 80 years ago...... My relatives survived Changi. I hold no grudges. QJ are being petty.

You saying it would be unfair to hold back Martin so what the difference to when you raced and team orders were given on who wins which class?
Don't forget John bastard brought track back from diused from 50si think

Nope not quite that simple Gresini are in advanced talks for them to remain next season
We need another manufacturer to take over at the top for a few years. Ducati domination is getting stale.
FFS Ducati have just got there after years and years of trying to catch Honda and Yamaha

Unfortunately for you there's many people that are fans of marc marquez, get over it and enjoy racing pal!
Ducati should have left Marquez floundering on the Honda 😎 we don’t need him 💪
calm down gladys, dont get your knickers in a twist.
How does he cheat?!! 🤔
MM should put "Rent Free" on his leathers 😅
