Coogan is a comic genius and Alan is one of the greatest comedy characters ever. He's a character who should be unlikeable, because he's so selfish, impatient, people-pleasing, insecure, insensitve etc., but you root for him and empathise with him because he so overtly struggles with the same negative personality traits that we all struggle with on some level, but is also completely socially inept and lacking in self awareness. I like to think that Alan is like Coogans psychological shadow, and it's said that one of the most important things you can do to work on your own growth is to make friends with your shadow.
I think the character was originally meant to represent a specific type of person who worked in the media, a Richard Madeley type- egocentric, boastful, petty and talked about things he was clueless about. But as we saw more depth about the character, it was clear Alan was desperate for fame at any cost, to the extent he would become a complete fool. Also Alan had to get the last laugh on anyone who belittled his abilities. Alan always was upper middle class, a tory and proud of it. As he fails at his various endeavours or looks the fool, it is natural for the audience to feel sympathy for the character. A theme among some of the best British comedy acts is trying to do something, but failing, like Brian Fawlty, David Brent, Hyacinth Bucket, Brian Potter etc. I think Alan Partridge does that the best, and is easily one of Britain's best comic creations of all times.
The interviewer's clothes are camouflaged with the decor. & if he swapped chairs with Mr Coogan it'd be vice versa but with his face instead. No, I'm drug free, thank you.
hah yeah, the same thought occurred when I saw a clip of Louis Theroux defending the BBC, he's going to Netflix. I think in terms of nurturing new creative talent though the BBC is second to none. He probably owes a large part of his career to the BBC. I think that justifies what, in the grand scheme of things is not very much money for the TV license.
Yea, if it weren't for the BBC we would never have had The Trip at all. I imagine The Trip switched to Sky for the very simple reason that they offered more money for the contract. I still think the original The Trip was better on the BBC. I find it very easy for people to attack the BBC but for all the crappy programs which I never watch there are still a lot of really great ones that are often created through the BBC and it IS still nice to be able to watch something without it being constantly interrupted with vast quantities of adverts every 10 minutes. Many of them are also ads for dodgy drugs, given their horrendous private healthcare system. It destroys the experience of trying to watch a film in particular. TV companies then wonder why everyone is now downloading or streaming instead of watching tv. Killing the BBC off or removing the licence fee and replacing it with adverts like every other broadcaster won't solve that at all, and in fact would only make things worse.
Criminally underviewed. Fantastic defence of the BBC, and what it represents, from someone who is as frustrated as anyone about how biased their coverage has been over the past few years. And being proud of the British spirit of dissent is an idea we very much need to revive.

Wages in those factories are low because wages in general in those countries are low. Wages are low because there's little capital per capita ie machines or factories per worker/citizen. Not buying their stuf is not going to do them any good, they have to find work somewhere else and wages in general will drop. The way to raise living standards/wages is for those countries to increase capital attract it from abroad or homegrown.
Instead of buying 10 pairs of jeans for 10 quid each......just buy an expensive pair and make them last !!! What a world these people live in really !!! I buy a pair for 2 or 3 quid for the charity shop and make them last.... I know he is "trying" To mean well , but you live in a different world mate. ( and NOTHING to do with race or religion ).
The real issue here is that money is controlled so that it is kept scarce! This is by design, while we sing and dance about who pays tax and does not , it doesn't touch the real issue!
What an odd interview, I was most confused by the interviewers confidence. The lack of lean in on that handshake at the end 😂 Steve Coogan nearly had to get up out of his chair to shake yours! How do you do that ??
On the subject of tax avoidance the problem is the system which greedy people will always exploit. A new system with new incentives needs to be designed and a radical overhaul of the current system has to happen. It’s all about the incentives of the system. The incentive at the moment is money so naturally people will gravitate towards a more insular self protection self sustaining attitude which you can’t blame. We have to look at changing peoples morals and ethics to incentivise these autoristic qualities I think we all have . So the shift in empathis and technology eventually I think will bring about the radical changes needed. Companies that have shareholders will always have to think about the shareholders only because the system incentivises this naturally. A more self sustaining and manageable and ethical system which benefits everyone should be the way forward.

I hate to say it as I'm a big fan of Partridge but Coogan doesn't come across as a particularly nice person. I also think he's got the wrong end of the stick politically. It's a shame when light entertainers go into political activism, it rarely helps anybody. There's kind of irony here that, perhaps unintentionally, Partridge seems to be a nicer person than Coogan.

Hugh Oxford I do find it difficult to get to the nub of Coogan “the man”, it does feel that Coogan is playing a character called “Steve Coogan”, who is basically a left-wing Alan Partridge. He’s basically, in my view, a classic Blair-ite, he’s rich enough to be sheltered from the consequences of the policies he supports.
I like what he's saying accept for his tv licence ideas they should be able to have the option not to pay for it, forcing people too pay for a service they don't use, and then comparing it to the NHS is utterly ridiculous. So, I don't watch the BBC or listen to any radio by them or read there news, but I have to pay for that or they'll make me a criminal and prosecute me, its not like the NHS people wont die if the BBC doesn't exist they will if the NHS doesn't. So, I am happy to pay tax that goes towards the NHS which saves lives! But I am not happy to pay a licence forced onto me and to suggest television company is as good as the NHS is a slap in the face for or health workers and the great job they do, to be honest very poor content there's like 4 things a year that are any good on the BBC the rest is absolute shite.

I think his point about adverts needs greater recognition. Generally I don't watch that much BBC stuff anymore, but him drawing attention to the fact that their is a substantial subsection of our culture which is devoid of explicitly market driven forces is really something quite extraordinary... and will only become rarer over time.
