Oh yay, I was wondering if anyone has a similar hiking relationship with their cat to me. :) My girl follows me and makes me follow her sometimes too. She's social and independent at the same time. I hope you have great time with your cat for years to come. :)
"Are you ready? Stop being a hippie" Love this video, love you and your poos, cannot wait to get my cat started on the harness and hopefully outdoors by the time it warms up!!
you are soo nice and affectionate towards your kitty. thank you for this video, my cat is 17 years old but we let her out in the yard every day. was just curious if this could even be done! you seem to understand cat psychology to a very high level, they are predators and they are prey, so their sense of fear is as important as their courage and both need to be paid attention to.
Ok this was an amazing video! I love how casual and confront you are with your experience. She seems so happy to be out there with you!! Not only have you inspired me to hike more, but I’m gonna bring my kitties!
I have a full-on hiking adventure cat now, but I want to thank you because when we started this was one of the first videos we saw on taking your cat hiking ❤️
Moved into a place where I can have pets again and already have my rescue kitty settling in. Hopefully by next spring we will have gone through all the baby steps and can go hiking! Thanks for this video, I’ve done a lot of research but it seems like you’ve included nearly everything a person needs to know. Smooches to your kitty!
this is a great video! Thank you very much. Really easy explained for beginners and great tips. I've been looking for a video like this for a while. Thanks
Hi, love the video. Im training my cat to walk in a leash at the moment. My question is What do you do when she wants to go in a direction that you cannot? My cat keeps doing this and then the leash pulls on her and she gets upset. How do i convince her to follow me?
My cat is a shoulder cat. He sits on my shoulder as his safe zone and rarely touches outside ground. He doesn't need a leash, biut use a 20' paracord tied to release 10' at his leisure. My cat is well trained, he even swims/kayaks with me. Btw cats do like water and swim pretty well
Cats in warm countries love water. The problem is that cats typically don't have much body fat at all - so it's more difficult for them to protect their body temperature ... a cold wet cat can find itself in thermal crisis pretty quickly.... but, in hot weather, most cats like paddling in water... as do almost all exotic tropical breeds. Tigers love swimming too ; ) I have two Bengals _(no, not tigers)_ and we go cruising for half the year, living on the yacht for a few months at a time. You have to watch them because they love jumping in the water as soon as we're at anchor _(I usually follow them in cus I'm a big kid)._ We usually avoid marinas because they don't know the dangers and they get upset if they're kept from going in. At home I have to keep the bath filled, because they're so water-oriented and keep the central heating at a decent level. They like to hunt wind-up fish and other floating stuff ... and they are surprisingly good at diving ... they're often found struggling to get caught fish or weeds up onto the swim-deck XD Just have to be careful to shower them after they've been in salt-water, or they'll injest it when cleaning themselves and that's not good for their heart. They're pretty good though, they like getting hosed down and will sit next to the deckhead shower when they're done swimming : ))))) Oh, and they love growling at dolphins and porpoises in the bow wave... and 'chattering' at birds... and at any young seals that come too close ; ) So, yeah, ocean-cats ... they're a thing ; )
This is something I wanted to do with our family cat. I also wanted to teach her to wear a harness and go for walks from being a kitten. But my family refused to let me. Which is a real shame. The idea was that cats can be devastating to birb populations. Although in the UK it’s safer to let them roam outdoors if near a country area/large fields, there are still problems (stealing and injury). But I wanted her to enjoy the outdoors and wanted to take her places. So the idea was to harness and carry her. But nah, family refused (I can’t wait to move back out again and get my own cat, damnit). I can learn for the future. AWWW! Your cat is cute. She slow blinked at the camera. :D
Thank you for this video! It's so informative. I was wondering what harness you would recommend. I haven't found one that is escape proof yet. Thanks! 🥰😺
thanks for the video, i on the other hand would like to train one to go wild camping but probably wouldn't work because 1) the cat will get scared if they hear or smell any wild animals in the proximity, and 2) the cat itself may become an attractant (or provoker) for such animals to attack :/
Really cute video. Many good tips. We found a 10 week old kitten a couple of weeks ago and want to take her on camping trips. She loves riding in the car which is very helpful. So far we've just used a hoodie to hold her in the car. She's been wearing a harness inside for longer and longer periods, which is also good. Have a cat backpack and a sling too. She was in the sling for about 5 minutes this morning and will try the backpack today. .Can't wait to get her out there.
@@Gamergirl-172 Well, in the first month or 2 when we'd take her out she'd ride on my shoulders at first. Then when safe, I'd put her down or sit down myself with her still on my shoulders. She'd sniff around a lot and look at anything that moved. It would take a lot of coaxing to get her to walk with us. On one occasion she probably walked a mile total on a 2.5 - 3 mile hike. But that was the most ever. We slacked off on taking her out as often, so now she mostly rides on my shoulders or in the bubble pack because she just won't walk. At least not like she did. She's worse when it's just me with her. Though many times she insists she get down, and that's pretty hard to stop, but then she just wants to sniff around or go deeper into the underbrush. She also complains more in the car too, but nothing like our older cats. Could be because she's older or not as used to it
Thank you, that was very helpful. I just wonder how it would go if i took my two cats hiking. Probably I'd need a second person to join me... Have you ever taken your car on overnight trips? I'd love to take my cats camping and hiking for a week or two some time.
Yes I have taken her on overnight trips. She has slept in a tent with me and has also slept in the car with me on long road trips. I always take her bed with us so she has her smell and comfortable spot where ever she goes.
I honestly just bought it at Petsmart. I didn't research brands, I just got one thatt fit her snugly behind her front legs and pulled on her chest instead of her neck.
I love this!! Beautiful video and great explanations. My cat follows me on shorter mountain hikes close to home, but will need a harness for longer trips to unknown areas. Your cats harness looks really comfortable, I've been looking and looking, if you have a spare minute, will you let me know what to look for please. Thank you. (My cat is extremely fuzzy, so has to soft and comfortable and not cover her whole body, she might never agree with a harness, but with a LOT of patience, maybe it'll work.)
Hey don't buy your cat a spring collar, the ones that bunch up but when your cat jumps they can go reallly far, because then they jump stratight into the bush, happened to me several times already with my cat.

Amazing video! Do you know where I could find a bag like that to carry my cat ? I have been looking on Internet and I dont really like the bags I found...thanks!!
I'm training my now 9 week old kitten to "adventure". He runs around I his harness a lot of the day, Especially since I am doing full time vanlife. I have been avoiding retractable leashes because I heard cats don't like to feel too restrained. So I have all loose fabric leashes. How has your cat reacted to the retractable? Any negatives. Also, my little cat boy freaked out on his first van trip. Now he doesn't care. I find not confining him made him find his own comfort with travel. And he has a few spots where he happily leisurely lays on the ride. He so far hasn't seemed to care about dogs. Like we walked in pet smart and the dogs were reacting to him, a little irish setter pup was actually scared of him, lol. They we're about the same size and I don't think the poor dog knew what my little Mickey boy was. He knew it wasn't a dog. 😄
She reacts to it fine. I'm happy you ahve an adventure buddy too! It's really fun to see them explore haha But you are right, it takes time for them to get used to it.
Awww she looks like my kitty (mine is almost 5 months), had her on the harness from 3 months onward, she spends hours outdoor daily and trying to get her to walk more consistently now. I love camping and hiking, she loves the tent till 11 pm at crazy hour then tried to destroy it..lol You're video gave me hope that if we stay consistent, she may become a really good walker. She demands her hardness daily so she's cool with it but usually prefers too lounge, eat more grass than a baby goat and attack bugs.. I have not car trained her yet, hopefully that goes well. Do you hike in the winter too?
In a previous comment KayDubs mentioned a harness brand called Pupteck. I searched Pupteck cat jacket on google and the first Amazon link looks like a good one!
If your in like a really hot or cold area or worried about rough terrain are there any recommended cat shoes or should they be okay for a minute chillin in the snow without worrying about freezer burn/frost bite on exposed paws?
Hi thank you for the very cute video! I am currently training my cat to walk on a leash and unfortunately that's how he got fleas :( I have been giving him Revolution for the past few months but it seems to not be getting rid of them. Can I ask you if you've ever had to deal with fleas if there's anything you know of that I can do? Besides vacuuming and doing a bunch of laundry all the time. I hate having to give him chemicals since I do prefer natural methods but I don't know what else to do :(
revolution now handles ticks also, and I give a light rubbing of mosquito spray in my hands, the chemicals are not as bad as the diseases. Sophie almost got away from me today, when she darted up a tree, after I dropped her leash, luckily, I grabbed her. she loves you going for walks.
Take your cat to a vet. They get rid of fleas quick. Chemical wont kill your cat if you are not constantly apply on your cat all the time. Fleas can do harm to you and your cat. So good luck
Hi! Your cat is adorable ❤️ How old is she here? I have a cat that looks very much like yours. He’s three and I take him out on the leash around our neighborhood but when I take him in the carrier, to the pet store or on the trail he gets overwhelmed and starts hissing at everyone. He likes the dogs and loves the people in our neighborhood . Also: he doesn’t seem to walk in one line, there is lots of stopping and smelling and laying down etc.
Can I get a hell yeah!!! I go camping with my cat and dog. Nothing major just overnight and about 1.5 hours in. I put my cat on my ruck when she gets tired.
Yeah I think so. Treats are a good motivator and pets. Be kind to her when you take her to new locations. That new location may just have to be the yard on a blanket for a few hours a few separate times
My cat doesn’t really like to be held should I wait until he is more comfortable with being held? I have a harness on him and a leash and he’s really loving but we think a friend scared him, he’s been with us 4 weeks now. And is about 4 months
4 months old is a good age for exposure to new things I think. Just slowly keep working with them and don't expect big break through moments. Cat's take more time than puppies I think.
Kaydubs the Hiking Scientist he has warmed up SO MUCH In this last week!! He’s a Farrel rescue so he’s definitely taken time, and him being Siamese and sensitive to pretty much everything he’s just taken time and patience I guess
Great video! Adorable kit Kat! Random but I wanted to ask you some questions about your career, I'm deciding on a career and some perspective from you would be much appreciated. If you ever have the time feel free to get back to me anytime and if not, well I look forward to more of your content :)
Hi May I know what about poop and pee while you are outdoor with your cat for hike or walk ? My kitten loves to come with me but I always come back within an hour or two as I am scared of what if he wants to poop or pee?
So what happens wen they suddenly see a squirrel 🐿 an dart off really fast and the leash my jag em back hard may hurt them. 😏 my cat he loves to hunt - I’ve just started him on walks only done it once in my garden an ally way. For 5 mins 😞am worried for him.
I’ve got the same problem. My cat can’t help but want to chase after tempting critters. I hold the leash and pray he doesn’t hurt himself. I’ve been out 3 times now and he is bolting less. Hopefully learning from the sudden abrupt leash wall! He still wants to deviate off the trail and go into the brush where he can ambush his target. I just pick him up and carry him far enough away where he gives up trying to turn back… he is sneaky though and tries many a ploy to circle back.😹
Another video said that you should always walk in front of your cat rather than behind. Teaching them to follow will increase the chance of taking them off the leash eventually and also protecting them from oncoming danger? what do you think?
I think in a yard off a leash is okay, but I had a scary experience where a dirt bike came out of nowhere in a forest where motorized vehicles weren't allowed and she got scared and ran away into a fallen log. It became a 5 hour rescue mission. After that.... no off leash. It's too dangerous and unpredictable. So a leash keeps her safe and also keeps wildlife safe from her.
"But if I say something nice maybe she'll come"
*Immediately calls her Stinky* :D

Step 2: Put cat in backpack

Kaydubs the Hiking Scientist he has warmed up SO MUCH In this last week!! He’s a Farrel rescue so he’s definitely taken time, and him being Siamese and sensitive to pretty much everything he’s just taken time and patience I guess
Great video! Adorable kit Kat! Random but I wanted to ask you some questions about your career, I'm deciding on a career and some perspective from you would be much appreciated. If you ever have the time feel free to get back to me anytime and if not, well I look forward to more of your content :)
Isn't his kneading a problem with all the lightweight rain barriers?
hahaha no. I don't have that cool of gear.
Hi May I know what about poop and pee while you are outdoor with your cat for hike or walk ? My kitten loves to come with me but I always come back within an hour or two as I am scared of what if he wants to poop or pee?
She poops outside and buries it
@@kaydubsthehikingscientist8458 do we have to train them for that ? as my kitten is habituate with litter box.
Any recommendations for brand of harness?
000snow000 they sell cat harnesses and leashes at pet stores now

So what happens wen they suddenly see a squirrel 🐿 an dart off really fast and the leash my jag em back hard may hurt them. 😏 my cat he loves to hunt - I’ve just started him on walks only done it once in my garden an ally way. For 5 mins 😞am worried for him.
I never have a problem with it. I also don't want her to hunt and hurt our dwindling native wildlife. She can play with inanimate objects at home.
I just pick him up and carry him far enough away where he gives up trying to turn back… he is sneaky though and tries many a ploy to circle back.😹
👏😘😸😹😻
Where is this trail?
Appalachian Trail
Another video said that you should always walk in front of your cat rather than behind. Teaching them to follow will increase the chance of taking them off the leash eventually and also protecting them from oncoming danger? what do you think?
I think in a yard off a leash is okay, but I had a scary experience where a dirt bike came out of nowhere in a forest where motorized vehicles weren't allowed and she got scared and ran away into a fallen log. It became a 5 hour rescue mission. After that.... no off leash. It's too dangerous and unpredictable. So a leash keeps her safe and also keeps wildlife safe from her.
Keep you cat on leash law .not only worry about coyotes, bob cat ,fox , and others . I keep a knife with me and pepperspray.
how about any animal big enough to not care about the human and clearly see the cat as prey, its quite stupid tbh, at least your ready i guess
What about letting them climb trees?
Did she complain in the beginning when in the car ?
no
