Yup, I'd say you're at least 1000% in love with that guitar! It was fun watching the joy on your face and in your whole body as you played for this demo. I feel that way every time I put new strings on my guitar. I don't have a Martin but I have a different high end guitar that I love as much as you love your Martin(s). I also have a mid range Breedlove that is pretty amazing. The wonderful feelings we have when we have an instrument we connect with like this is hard to describe to others but I can see it in you in this video.

Very sweet demo, fanboi :) I think you never sounded better in any demo I heard and I find it refreshing that you are so honest and open about your fandom. Thanks for this!
Thank you for the demo. Very good recording quality. I like slope shoulder guitars a lot and have been eyeing this one since they showed it at nam, yours by far is the best example of how great it is. Will be saving up for it for sure.
Thanks for the review. I have been looking at these for a while and trying to decide between the model this replaced the D17M and this, probably in whisky Sunset. This will be my first Martin. Enjoyed your playing and the fantastic sounding guitar too. Drop D was a revelation :)
Wow! Such a great guitar! It is so beautiful, and it sound incredible! I've been wanting one of the Martin guitars for years and it looks like this one is a perfect match. The black is so classy, and the shape of the guitar...Wow! I would really like to buy this one for myself! Thank you so much for a great review, Lewin! Watching your channel for many years, I can totally trust your opinion on guitars. And if you love this guitar, I know I'm gonna love it as well!
Your over the top enthusiasm in this video was one of the reasons I had to try one at a local music store. I was so charmed, I bought one! The guitar is very light, very responsive and very resonant. It looks great too. I also own a DR Centennial (rosewood back and sides; VTS Adirondack top). The two complement each other beautifully. I have owned Taylor, Seagull and Yamaha (all very good guitars) but none had the charm and tone of my Martins!
Years since you posted this, but I want to thank you for the review. I got the whiskey sunset version recently, and it’s the best acoustic I’ve ever owned. I’ve compared it against a d-18, which was excellent but different, and the dss-17 was not lacking in comparison. I’ve owned a couple of high end Taylors, and again, it compares well. Bottom line is the dss-17 is a great Martin acoustic, and a great acoustic just in general.
Well, Here it is 2023 and these models along with the whiskey sunset version are being discontinued. Not sure why exactly. I just purchased a whiskey sunset DSS-17 used from a guy who bought it but played more electric. So for 1350.00 it is now mine. Been wanting one for awhile. Great video, Thank you.
Great! I've been a Martin player for 50+ years ( I've also owned every Gibson, from the J-200s, and SJNs, down to the J-45s, and J-50s models, not to mention an Epiphone Texan or two (( and I'm talkin' 'bout '60s models, here.... ))), and I've generally played their "top of the line, D, or 00028 or above models". What can I say, I'm "a rosewood back and sides kinda guy!" My take has always been "if I want the sound of mahogany, "I'll play a Gibson!" This is a wonderful review! Of course, they got the "slope-shoulder" thing from Gibson, but you can't find a decent "slope" from Gibson in this price range, and if you could, it would probably be crap! Thanks for the review! I just wish you'd play even more.... Love your pickin'! I know that's not what this vid's about though!
I've been a dedicated Martin D ( Dreadnaught ) - 28 ( Rosewood sides and back ) series player for 50+ years. I also realized, say about 40 yrs ago, that the "000" series body is much better for " balanced sound"..... This is based on many things, for sake of brevity, 1. "Big Bill's guitar" Big Bill Broonzy, at that stage of his career, had a choice of pretty much any guitar... and he chose a Martin 000-28. (An unusual choice for a "bluesman") I've played that guitar, and it is great! 2. Eric Clapton had his choice of Martins, didn't choose a D"readnaught". but chose a 000! Now, of course, there have been numerous "EC" "Signature Martins", almost entirely in the "000" size body. 3. Unless you're bangin' out bluegrass style bass runs, everybody in the studio always says "give me the "triple 0"! So the question is.... Have you played the "triple 0" version of this guitar? ( I'm not askin' idly, the first guitar I had was a Gibson "Slope", and I've owned many since... SJN, J-45, J-50. Epiphone Texans.. ) I'm about to make a decision beteen the "slope" and the "tripleO,". So it would "ease my mind" if I knew, that when you say; " the best new Martin I've ever seen!", that you have also at least played the its "000" counterpart!
I'm very late to the party but thank you for the time you took for this. Some of the comments..!!!😂😂😂😂. Especially the guy who's sticking to Taylor...😅😂😂😂 And all three are out of tune. 😂😂😂. I have one of these and owned a 28. I always found it underwhelming. This has character..I'm 68 now and have been playing since I was 10 and You know..some Yamahas sound better than a 28..But I love this guitar and your comparison at the beginning. D18s D15m are fabulous also . D15M especially for recording. I knew a guy with a 28 in a band I played in. ...I didn't like him either ...😮😂😂😂😂😂
Super cool review and performance!! I owned mahogany back/sides on 60's Gibson in the past. I like rosewood back/sides and koa on Martin now. But I realized single tone on rosewood back/sides is not punchy and fatty such as koa. Besides watching your demo, DSS-17 has more punchy tone than the others. I feel you are really moved with DSS-17!! If I bought a new guitar, I wanna definitely take mahogany back/sides on Martin or any other brands.
If one wanted to play exactly like you, what ‘style’ would I tell my guitar teacher to focus on? Flat picking? Country? Or simply beautiful and powerful?
Really. I was underwhelmed with the 28. Preferred the 18. I suppose strumming is ok with it. Campfire stuff.😮. 18 more articulate. But I prefer this over an 18. I've owned them all ..this is the one I choose over all of them.
@@stratnick Hi, I was gonna bother you for some feedback on your DSS17 that is 8 months old now :) I have bought a D16E model and loved it, but once I plugged it in I had a problem with open 5th string producing a jangle-buzz. I was told it could be a wire from the electronics inside touching the wood and creating that problem. I decided that I will get an all natural guitar with no electronics and found Martin GC MMV wich has great reviews but not so many videos and in some that are out there it sounds a bit jangly, but then I saw DSS 17 and cannot make a decision now on which one to buy to replace the D16E. I am sorry for the long story and am hoping for a response from you to hear your experience with this guitar.
I 'A M' U Hi, the DSS-17 is great. I think it has a Great tone. Plenty of bottom end but also a good mix of highs and mids too. I’ve used it live about 2-3 times a week since I got it. I’ve fitted a Fishman Matrix Mic Blend pickup which I think works really well for my needs. Ok smaller venues where I don’t need to be too loud I can blend in more of the mic to get a really natural tone. I would definitely recommend the DSS if you are looking for a slope shoulder dread. It is really light weight too which surprised me.
@@stratnick Thank you for your reply. I am glad you like your DSS-17 , I have been looking for that perfect guitar for me and DSS-17 was almost it, only problem is there wasn't any in town to try, same thing with MMV. I think backing the mic off to more of a room setting would show just how great these guitar are . Gibson are nice but Martin Acoustics are the best . Acoustic guitars were around before the art of recording and they were made to entertain a room full of people , not a mic . Great Video !!!

Only thing you failed to mention about this awesome guitar, is how affordable is!!!! U.S like $1600 in the U.S $2099 in Canada and I'm getting one for sure. Just wish it had a pickup
@@GaragebandandBeyond Thanks for the quick response.Im torn between purchasing a Martin DSS 17 Black Smoke or the Gibson J-45 Standard Vintage 2021. Really don't need it for Live. Maybe as a back up. I'm going to be honest with you. I love your songs and playing. And I think it looks and sounds like a cool guitar. People say it is light and resonates, making to me for a great player experience. It sounds like it's missing some precious midrange. Sounds like metal strings more than wood.
Great video, BUT, just 1 question: Why compare a D28 and a HD28(rosewood) with a DSS17(Mahogany)? Tonally, a different guitar. Great video, nonetheless.😁🎉🎑
Sounds very similar to my j35...makes sense; same wood, shape & bracing. I like the fact that Martin basically created a custom shop Gibson at a more attainable price. Buuut, I’d probably get the 000-17 to add a different flavor...I still want one of these though haha
Truth of 73 yeah I saw that last night when I was checking out the specs. Not sure how I feel about that. I love Gibson scale buuut...I guess I’ll need to track one of these down and try it out 🤔

Good for you man, great video an congrats on the partnership, guitar sounds great. Price point is reasonable as well - after visiting Martin's website and dealers I can't find where the guitar is actually made. Country?
i saw this video and went looking for one i found one in nsw australia and it sold i found another one in perth australi i hagled for a better price and got a saving of 150 dollars i really kept saying i dont need another guitar but but but i have to have it what on earth has come over me so i just bought it on line and yes i am in love guitar hasnt been shipped yet im looking for a cool strap on ebay now something that reminds me of america
I still play mine EVERYDAY!! It is a stunning guitar, no doubt. On the strap, look for something made out of saddle leather. They are the best and in most cases you can get them with custom designs. Good luck with your new baby, take REALLY good care of it in the first year. Humidify it and you'll be fine.
@@GaragebandandBeyond i found a couple of straps on eBay i like there is this martin strap that fits across the head stock. so i don't have to worry about getting a shoe lace or a bit of leather this guitar needs to be pampered. both straps are black in color leather both have inlays one with a diamond shape cut out with rattlesnake skin and a concho in the middle. one native American influence and the other texmex kind of thing influence. i am also a big fan of sigma guitars who i believe is a martin company leased to a German company i own a j200 sigma really impressed. i love gibsons too but prices are out of my pocket. i would consider a j35

Only thing you failed to mention about this awesome guitar, is how affordable is!!!! U.S like $1600 in the U.S $2099 in Canada and I'm getting one for sure. Just wish it had a pickup
Affordable!!. What does that mean. I have this guitar. Life time savings. Anything but affordable,!!!
Great video. How is the neck? How does it play?. Thanks
It's awesome! I love the neck on it. Perfect shape for long sessions.
@@GaragebandandBeyond Thanks for the quick response.Im torn between purchasing a Martin DSS 17 Black Smoke or the Gibson J-45 Standard Vintage 2021. Really don't need it for Live. Maybe as a back up. Presently, I play a Taylor, single cutaway live , fantastic neck, easy to play and I have a Martin D-18 V, for studio. the Taylor for recording, not so good. The Martin in the studio is good, I would prefer a little more of something. And the purchase , is from a distance. Any ideas?
Excellent review dude that's how it's done ✅ I'm about to buy my first Martin on line so I'll have no hands on experience and can't decide on a d18 our this d17 any advice on which one ? Thanks
I'm going to be honest with you. I love your songs and playing. And I think it looks and sounds like a cool guitar. People say it is light and resonates, making to me for a great player experience. It sounds like it's missing some precious midrange. Sounds like metal strings more than wood.
I'm a Martin gal also. 00 size Martins fit me perfectly ! Also play the Martin Dred Jr. ( the older first model ) :-)
Great video, BUT, just 1 question: Why compare a D28 and a HD28(rosewood) with a DSS17(Mahogany)? Tonally, a different guitar. Great video, nonetheless.😁🎉🎑
Mostly to demonstrate how easily the DSS-17 can compare to much more expensive models. Do you have one?
Sounds very similar to my j35...makes sense; same wood, shape & bracing. I like the fact that Martin basically created a custom shop Gibson at a more attainable price. Buuut, I’d probably get the 000-17 to add a different flavor...I still want one of these though haha
One of the bigger differences is the Gibson J35 like all J models are a 24.75 scale whereas the Martin sticks with their 25.4 scale for the DSS17.
Truth of 73 yeah I saw that last night when I was checking out the specs. Not sure how I feel about that. I love Gibson scale buuut...I guess I’ll need to track one of these down and try it out 🤔
Danny Christian Me too. I like the easy playing 24.75 and when I originally saw this guitar, I thought it would be. So I guess I have to play one too.
What is the weight of this?
The second hand shop near me has one of these for about $1200. Gonna take a serious look at it.
DEFINITELY buy it!!!
In black? Did you get it??
@@elsizzle2000 Sadly, I did not. Not enough money 💰 in the guitar budget.
Howdy from Montana Lew...
Been watching most if not all reviews on this Martin... so of course I came across your channel ... impressive 4 sho!! 🤠🤘
New Sub, and lookin' 4ward.
Got the Cash coming 1st... (its black too)
Next is this in Whiskey 😮👍
DSS- 17 vs J-45 Vintage Sunburst. Difference? Sound and neck playability. Any ideas?
Try them out and find out. Goodness sake.
Beautiful and great sounding guitars! I still prefer the older D28 - it's just so nicely balanced sounding, I really like it. Thanks for the video!
The reason I played all three was because I wanted you guys to hear how well the new instrument stood up against the older ones!
GaragebandandBeyond It certainly does, good work on that
Older....this will get older and better.
I didn't. I was shocked. I'd take this over the 28.
So do you like it? Lol. Seriously though great review. Thanks
Now you gotta send the Black Smoke back?
What does that mean ,? Explain yourself man.
Beautiful sounding instrument. What mic is that, Lewin?
It's the Lewitt LCT-140 I LOVE IT!!! And I I have reviewed it!
Good for you man, great video an congrats on the partnership, guitar sounds great. Price point is reasonable as well - after visiting Martin's website and dealers I can't find where the guitar is actually made. Country?
Leah Ferjulian Thank you so much for the kind words about the video! As always, Martin guitars are made in America.
Sorry not all Martins are made in America, I have a DRS2 made in Mexico and it’s a very nice guitar.
Tom Hamby ahhhhh shit you’re totally right!!! My bad!! Well, this one was made in America!
J 45s should have a bit more mellow highs
Why did they d/c this beauty?
They haven't.
This guitar is already discontinued?
This color has been ..not the sunset.
No it hasn't.
Leave off pick guard, then I am sold!
Sounds great Lewin, not keen on the colour though :(
the whisky sunset looks gReat
from this side it's hard to distinguish but from what I heard the D28 is still the best
May I ask, what did you listen to this on?
@@GaragebandandBeyond Listening on Rokit 5's then switched to headphones and all 3 sound different to me.
Leah Ferjulian they definitely all sounds different, the point is that the new guitar stands up really well against the old guitars!
@@GaragebandandBeyond Sennheiser HD380 PRO
Anibal Miranda what??
😍awesome.
i saw this video and went looking for one i found one in nsw australia and it sold i found another one in perth australi i hagled for a better price and got a saving of 150 dollars i really kept saying i dont need another guitar but but but i have to have it what on earth has come over me so i just bought it on line and yes i am in love guitar hasnt been shipped yet im looking for a cool strap on ebay now something that reminds me of america
He looks so different
In a way, the DSS sounds like a "teenage" Martin, compared to the grown up D28's.
What a load of bollocks.
Do you talk bollocks on other subject material?
Nope. I'd take this over the 28. The comparison was a shock.
Sounds very early Dylan-esque
i see that Elvis Presley last d28 has been fully restored
Life's a gas gas gas. Shame he couldn't really play.
Thank you .
DESPARATELY to find one
I dont know but all three guitars didn't sound right they all sounded out of tune not much of a martin fan I'll stick with taylor guitars
Mark Staggs
Taylor. LOL
@@powbobs that's right TAYLOR you FOOL
Mark Staggs
LOL. Let me guess. You play in a Worship Team. Ha ha.
Taylors suck!
What ..tiny sounding pieces of wood strung together to hold it together. But like PRS.. lacking in every department.😮😮😂
Love everything about it! Also, what kinda capo are you using?
