John, I have Robinhood gold already. They match 3% on my Roth IRA. Basically getting $160 for free every year. Where else would do this for free? I don't necessarily have loyalty with Robinhood, but it is really nice.
No where else including Robin hood does it for free. You paid $50 a year for your Robin hood gold and you had to move your roth Ira to robinhood. Anyone who is contributing to an employer 401k , keeping their Ira elsewhere, using a traditional Ira because of their tax bracket, or doesn't excess income to max out a roth Ira yet, get no value out of the roth match to say nothing of the fact that the match is not tied to the card and even if you are already a robinhood gold user, any other card with a SUB is going to blow the cash back out of the water in the first year.
The $5 sub is worth it for the credit card and 3% IRA match alone. It pays for itself and more with a 3% ira match. Its a free $210 a year into your IRA that no other company offers. Subtract your subscription from that and its still way better than any card.
And the High Yield Savings of 5.25%. With the IRA and the HYS, the $5 a month is easily paid off within the first month for me. I will likely use my Bilt card for rent only then this card will be my everyday card.
Didn’t know the video was gonna get that heated but there is actually someone who can take advantage of this card. This is someone who has subscribed to robinhood gold to take advantage of their 3% Roth IRA match ($210) which is extra money added to the current 7k max. Only then will this card make sense to enjoy the extra 3% everyday cash-back.
Thanks for looking out for those of us in the credit card community, I've never seen you angry and definitely can feel your passion and care for people to not be taken advantage of. This is a consumer service video right here. Props!

Hope to use the card to lower my overall credit utilization and maybe use the cash back. We will see. Thanks for the video!
This is the best card for high spenders no matter all the other stuff. Also you can immediately transfer your cash into a 5% interest bearing savings account . You can also buy bonds if you choose. Robinhood has been great for me. All the hate in this video is hilarious. 3% for the win all day long.
American express platinum is $695 per year with no card replacement cost Robinhood is $60 per year for those gold subscription plus $40 if you ever lost your card. American express almost monthly cost is 1 year of robinhood gold. If you do the math. Even with those 5x flights and hotels those $69 annual fee is crazy.
I do not see a problem with this card…3% CB is 3%….no issue with $40 replacement … that could happen once every 2 years after earning extra 1% or more on this card vs all others covers that …with ease ….
Robinhood is also offering 1% bonus on all money transferred and bonuses on money market rates. So it’s a no brainer if you have a decent amount of cash to move there.
The scenario you totally missed are people who are already Gold members. This would make this a no annual fee card. All the other 2% cards you reference charge foreign transaction fees.
I have the card as well. The metal feel of the card feels like you made it. You have a premium card. When I use it people give it a 2nd look as you can tell it's something special. When I applied they gave me a credit limit of 25k. The interest rates will be a killer so I pay my cards off monthly and only use them for the rewards. I have mine set up to do auto pay every week and to pay the full amount off. I already have robinhood gold as I have lots of UN-invested cash sitting in the account besides my investments. I saw the 40 dollar replacement fee for the card. They should give an option of a plastic card for free or a metal replacement for 40.
SoFi gives me 2.2% cash back, so since I don't already have Robinhood Gold, I'd need to spend at least $6,250 a year on this card to break even on the subscription fee. I'm considering it... not sure yet.
To me the $50/yr fee is not really a fee. In order to get this credit card, u have to have gold membership which will give 5% interest. You only need to put a little bit over 1k in Robinhood account, you already get $50 back in interest. Regarding the CEO making the comment, i think all the credit card companies have the same idea. Thus, i think if u already have a robinhood account, it definitely worths it to get the card.
lol, honestly they were my first ever brokerage platform. I still remember signing up for THAT waitlist in like 2013/2014. But since then a lot has changed about them and I've also learned a lot about investing in general. Can't say I'm a huge fan these days
I don't know this channel, but I think it's worth it. Most consumers spend $1000 / month on purchases. At 3% cash back on a yearly basis, that's $360. Take out $50 for Gold, that's $310. For competitors at 2%, you'll receive $240. Judging a company for it's desire to make profit and calling it 'diabolical'... well isn't that the ethos of ALL credit cards? APR is there for that reason alone - profit. Robinhood isn't alone in this. And for those saying R.H. will decrease the cash back percentage, simply cancel the card. It's a competitive market.
When the card was announced they were clear about the subscription and the ceo went as far as saying that it makes the most sense for people who fully utilize the robinhood gold subscription. My IRA match alone pays that off over and over again
Great video. I’m really glad you went into the downsides and business practices. It could be the best card ever issued but I wouldn’t get it because of their GME shenanigans but a lot of people either never heard of that or can be lured in with “ooooo shiny” Keep being an awesome dude my dude 👍🏼
Didn’t know replacement fee. Not sure if you are on credit card subreddit but someone got their taxes purchase declined and a guy with 6k purchase at Costco.
I run most of my non-category spending through the AMEX blue Business preferred which with the Amex Schwab platinum gives me an effective 2.2%. I was thinking about getting this card for the additional 0.8% but I don’t think I want to give Robinhood the business.
It being from a stock trading app missed a HUGE opportunity to do like the old Stash card and a certain percent of your purchases could go to fractional shares of where you shop. That encouraged me to invest more with them because I could invest in places that I obviously saw value in.
When you offer something that no one else does, you don't have to offer a SUB. BILT is in this category, and Robinhood offering 3% cashback is also something no one else offers. Also, the card is announced but hasn't launched. I've been on the waitlist since day 1. Also, the AF is no different than the Amazon Prime card. And moreover it pays for itself without the card. Paying $60/year gets me $210/year in IRA matching and a 5% APY savings account. No hoops to jump through like Amex credits either. Deposit money into your IRA just like you normally do.
Those are benefits of your robhinhood BROKERAGE not benefits of the credit card being offered. The credit card itself doesn't match up against anything in year 1 because no SUB, its just a thing you might get because you were already in robinhood.
If you’re someone who is already investing at least $139 a month($1668/yr) into your IRA & you pay the $50 AF upfront, then yes having the card pays for itself because of the 3% match ($1668 x 0.03 = $50). This is completely separate from actually using the card. Therefore don’t get this card unless you are: 1. already maxing out any employer 401(k)/403b match(Free $) AND 2. can still afford to add money(@least $139/mo) to an outside IRA. Also, it should go without saying, but I’ll say it, NEVER carry a balance on a credit card. Carrying a balance almost always (except for promotional 0% offers) negates any benefits the card has to offer.
Already had robinhold gold for awhile, have enough cash in the sweep program to cover the monthly cost plus. So for me, it is a fee free card. I've put my other cards on the shelf, including my citi double cash back card.
Iv already been paying for Robinhood gold. My dividends in Robinhood more than cover for gold. Plus the 3% I get I can transfer to Robinhood and get an extra 5% APY on that money
All pretty reasonable takes and I don't think this card is the best choice if you qualify for cards in the mid-high tier range w/ annual fees! I think it's important to consider the benefits offered by Robinhood Gold, though, if we are treating it as an annual fee. In that sense, things like 3% Roth IRA matching should be considered as perks IFF a prospective subscriber did not have RH Gold in the first place.
How come they give you the card? I’ve applied at immediately after the initial announcement and I never got it. I’m under the impression that this is just a scam to drum up expectations and for people to buy Robin Hood gold until then. They terms and conditions clearly states that they can cap the rewards . and they can also possibly increase the gold subscription from fifty dollars to hundred dollars a month from next year. Having owned the card with 3% cashback, one would not hesitate much to keep paying higher price. These kind of subscriptions services or going to mess up.
This card is a big no from me. Robinhood is too wishy washy for me. I'll stick to my Chase trifecta and Amex cards. BILT captures misc spend on rent day for 2x which is enough for me. I like the hyatt points from rent and paying misc bills.

I already paid the 50 annually fee will use it for a year if my spending it's less than 5k bye bye robinhood .😅🎉 ty for your info
Wait wtf? Why did they charge me $60 for the annual fee last month?
thanks for the video, not all influencer goes against these companies.
Great video. I’m really glad you went into the downsides and business practices. It could be the best card ever issued but I wouldn’t get it because of their GME shenanigans but a lot of people either never heard of that or can be lured in with “ooooo shiny”
Keep being an awesome dude my dude 👍🏼
Or people just use RH for normal investing and don’t trade meme stocks so that incident means nothing to them because they just buy VOO for $25 daily.
@@slicklizardchamp that they did what they did should give anyone pause regardless of the stocks they trade
Robinhood. The same company that froze small customers money to help their big investors.
Didn’t know replacement fee. Not sure if you are on credit card subreddit but someone got their taxes purchase declined and a guy with 6k purchase at Costco.
It also comes in a LV cardholder.
A minor major point, but front running is very different (and very illegal) from executing orders or selling orderflow.
Paypal does offer a 2% cashback, but if you use Paypal, they give you 3% and it's an free card
I run most of my non-category spending through the AMEX blue Business preferred which with the Amex Schwab platinum gives me an effective 2.2%. I was thinking about getting this card for the additional 0.8% but I don’t think I want to give Robinhood the business.
Where the heck is my gold card I signed up when it was announced…
Thank you for the honest review! Their business structure reminds me of Acorns. Review them next.
I am a gold member to get the Roth IRA match 1% and yes the high yield helps negate the $50 so the gold card is an extra 3% for myself
Fantastic video! I was actually considering getting into the robinhood ecosystem, thanks for opening my eyes, and many others’
Good Stuff John!
It being from a stock trading app missed a HUGE opportunity to do like the old Stash card and a certain percent of your purchases could go to fractional shares of where you shop. That encouraged me to invest more with them because I could invest in places that I obviously saw value in.
Huge shoutout to the content creator: John Liang. I trust you for reliable content, and always appreciate your passion for the average user!
I agree 100% with this. Robinhood gold pays for itself and you don't have to worry about stupid categories swapping and all that
Those are benefits of your robhinhood BROKERAGE not benefits of the credit card being offered.
I love your honesty.
Already had robinhold gold for awhile, have enough cash in the sweep program to cover the monthly cost plus. So for me, it is a fee free card. I've put my other cards on the shelf, including my citi double cash back card.
never seen bro this heated, must be serious. great content!
Well first you have to be able to get it. I’ve been on the wait list for almost 2 months.
$40 Replacement Card fee? 🤔 Junk fee for sure. I’m curious if this applies to lost cards only.
I hadn’t seen that one.
Great video and unbiased thank you
Much awaited video 🎉
Thx for video
Does a 3 percent cashback used on rent cancel out the 3 percent fee for paying rent with a card?
yes, assuming they fee to pay rent with a card is only 3% if it's lower then in theory you come out ahead!
