32:27 The absolute best live song Nirvana would ever play, and it was sure to give the audience an aneurysm every fucking night! Also Dave on drums. Wish it was 92 to see them one more time.
singing with and without the guitar as well as changing the vocal octaves had that effect on the vocals. using a chorus pedal also makes your guitar sound like 2 guitars.
no back tracks, no stand ins, no lip synch, no backup singers, nothing but real, raw, sober talent. New father and clean during this time, giving UA's few times a week to get Frances back and keep her. They also did the MTV interview for the MTV Music Awards a couple days later, and it was packaged together as a feature. You may recall Kurt holding and feeding Frances, and CLove's sister had temp custody and they were both clean/sober and determined to be a family unit again, and did within a matter of a few weeks but still had to prove their sobriety for 6 months after getting her back.
Probably the last time Kurt was ever "sober" for a time, I believe he was taking methadone at the time, he did for legs of touring in AUS n other places he couldn't get dope
Don't mean to split hairs here but they actually did the Mtv interview before they played this show right in the Seattle Center Coliseum before they took the stage. The Mtv awards had already taken place.
Not tough to see how some of their best songs were born from jam sessions before practice or sound check. Kurt lays a little riff, dave comes in over the top with a backbeat and Krist ties it together with some bassline rythym. Then Kurt throws some lyrics he'd just thought of or some others he'd been holding onto for some time before finding a fit for them, on top of it all and the result was usually amazing. Some of my favorite Nirvana songs were nvr released on studio albums. Talk to Me is maybe my top 2 or 3 Nirvana songs behing Radio Friendly Unity Shifter and Aneurysm (w/some ties in 2nd...Very Ape, Territorial Pissings, Lounge Actp, Smells like Teen Spirit, School...) After they got really famous (91/92) they didnt play together often outside of shows or recording sessions and though they were great and tight, their performances from 93 and 94 do lack something that 90 91 and most of 92 did not. They took 9 months off from touring in 92 after Vanity Fair article and losing custody of Frances. They didnt see eachother during that time no less play music. Theyvdidnt even live in the same state no less city. But then they recorded In Utero after the '92 Reading festival and MTV Video Awards, which both performances might have been at the peak off Nirvanamania. It seems shortly after this period Kurt's personal life caught up with him and most costly the band. Nirvana was literally Kurt's reason to live as would often point in interviews that he was so deressed all the time before he played in a band. He also was usually quick to point out that the band need not be so famous to provide him with the same affect a band as popular as Nirvana. One thing that cannot be denied but is often overlooked is how well Kurt and Dave were able to harmonize. For me, thats the biggest change in the band pre & post dave joining. Sure he pounds the skins like no other & yes, Kurt had an undeniably awesome rock singing voice. But a 2nd voice made their sound rich and added a valuablr quiver to Kurt's song writting arsenal that was lacking on Bleach. I heard Dave say in a tv interview that when he joined the band and moved in with kurt, one night kurt asked him to harmonize with him. Dave had never sung in a band and felt really weird about it. So after like 5 mins Kurt says to him, "If you dont feel comfortable, it's going to look like you dont feel comfortable. Nobody judges bands like ours on vocal ability. Do it with passion and it will resonate with the audience more. Dave then said without that warning/advice hed have never sang and the Foo Fighters would never have been born. Dave also said that he personally hates writing lyrics and melodt but that contrary to what he told people, Kurt liked it. Dave said he would wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and on his way hed walk by kurt watching infomercials, while scrating down notes in a notebbok and humming into a tape recorder. Dave has obviously gone on to conquer some pretty impressive rockstardom and Krist certainly was no slouch but Nirvana was the Kurt Cobain show, through and through. He wrote all the music early on including bass and drums along with lead guitar and lead vocals. In Utero saw a bit more collaboration apnd had they done more itd probably have progressed much more but aps it stands, Dave's backup vocals and all, Nirvana was the Kurt show.
@trick Taylor1983 - Underrated comment! Did Kurt really write the basslines and drum parts? I mean, I'm sure he gave a lot of input and had the final word on what was played, but I remember Dave Grohl giving Chad Channing credit for lots of the drum parts on Nevermind (particularly "In Bloom") at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame awards.
i love the look of 92' for some reason. pretty sure in the early months of 1992 kurt had dyed his hair red and blonde i believe... cut his hair, krist had long hair, dave also had trimmed his hair. they all changed their looks and it was quirky yet iconic. everything they did was too intense to understand.
I was 18 in 1992- for some damn reason I wasn’t into Nirvana then, but of course I was when I was older, when it was too late to go to a Nirvana concert. So bummed of course!! Kurt’s voice is one of a kind. Feels like it should of hurt him. What a good looking guy, and always iconic.
I was there. Helmet opened up and were so tight and energetic that the crowd seemed drained and exhausted by the time Nirvana got onstage. I'd never heard of Helmet prior to that night and the next day I bought both their albums and every single I could find (for the B-sides, of course).
All Apologies as set starter was an awesome choice. Always bittersweet watching a Nirvana live performance, but the music is forever and that makes me smile.
Thank you very much for posting this! I have heard both versions of the audio and the AUD only and some clips of PRO shot video of this show. This is a very powerful performance. Band is in top form here and the sound quality is fucking mind blowingly awesome. This show deserves an official CD and DVD release and it should include the 1992 VMA performance Nirvana did too. Maybe the 1/10/1992 MTV performance and '92 SNL performance as well.
I was at this show. In addition to throwing a diaper into the audience at some point in this show Kurt says to the audience between songs "I think I saw Sammy Hagar here once." I couldn't find it in this video, thumbs up to anyone that can. Sammy Hagar played the Seattle Center Coliseum in 1985 so Kurt may have been telling the truth about that.
I remember at this concert they started playing Tori Amos’s version of Smells Like Teen Spirit, then Kurt said “Yeah right” and proceeded to launch into it
+TheSmashingTesticles they could play a bit of sludge metal and were influenced by metal bands so they might have been able to do it but they never did
I understand that your comment is a year old, and you may not use this account anymore, I'll give it a shot anyways. But I was wondering why he was banned?
Gear nerds will I'm sure correct me, but here goes: Kurt's main pedal was the Boss DS-1 (or the Boss DS-2 used in mode 1), which I'm assuming he was using on this song. Some say that these pedals don't sound the same as they did thirty years ago; I really don't know. Kurt also used a Mesa Boogie Studio .22 pre amp, and a Crown (later a Crest) power amp. So I think that would be a tube pre amp, and a very powerful solid state power amp. Kurt supposedly hated Marshall amps, but he did use Marshall cabs. Lastly, he said he used Radio Shack speakers, but I think he was probably trolling the interviewer. You can find pictures of him in the '80s using Sunn Beta Leads and Randall Commanders.
@@profd65 yeah that was pretty much the essence of Kurt's live rig from around 1991 on. The mesa and crown pre/power through marshall cabs, which he sometimes took the actual marshall labels off because of the connotation these speakers had regarding cock rock glam metal douches like Poison that he hated. Also, he used a mini marshall stack in 93 as a prop, it was never actually plugged in but can be clearly seen at the Live and Loud set. Kurt's distortion/gain pedal of choice was the DS-1 and 2 primarily. He toyed sporadically with the DOD Grunge pedal, half as a goof but some say he actually liked the way it sounded. The separate pre and power amps were his staples live, while in the studio he used fender twins and tweeds and other various combos. Kurt is also famous for using the Electro Harmonix small clone chorus pedal, epitomized in Come as you Are. Kurts rig was simple at its core, but he was actually really meticulous about his guitar tone, he was not lazy at all in this respect!
No, this is only part of it, but the three songs that are at the end are from the beginning of the concert, and the others are from later in the concert.
Somehow they lost the soundcheck settings at the board. The first couple of songs were a trainwreck. They actually stopped and restarted songs untill at some point you can see Kurt motioning to the sound guy that he can finally hear himself

That's what crossed my mind a long time ago, agreed.
Dumb is such a beautiful relaxing song with a very intelligent lyric
25 years later is still the greatest show ever
Well thanks kids for your input
This is gold an love how Dave and Kurt testing instruments together
Love that stage-side footage and the boom of the foldback audio. Kurt's wearing his Daniel Johnston t-shirt too.
this is incredibly rare... never seen it in it's entirety. before. thx for upload
Kurts voice is out of this world The best in rockhistory for sure 🧍♂️😎🎸🥁❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋

Yeah it’s rare to see him with shoes

J R pretty sure it wasn't and it's out of order and the end of the set was the beginning. Think someone in the comments above also confirmed that
This show starts with Breed

Hagar played the Coliseum a number of times. I saw him new year's eve '80. I don't recall seeing Kurt there though, lol.
I remember at the start of Nirvana's set Kurt threw out a loaded diaper into the crowd saying it was a present from Frances.
haha that's pretty sick, but funny. I wonder what she would think of this
They sounded soooo good
Krist n Kurt swaying in tandem during All Apologies..... priceless!
first time I've seen anyone dub audience audio onto a pro vid, replacing the soundboard audio!
I remember at this concert they started playing Tori Amos’s version of Smells Like Teen Spirit, then Kurt said “Yeah right” and proceeded to launch into it

+Jaefar SABNW They could play anything.
+TheSmashingTesticles they could play a bit of sludge metal and were influenced by metal bands so they might have been able to do it but they never did
They were able, but couldn't bring themselves to. Kurt didn't consider it 'music'.
Kurt is beautiful and explosive he is hot so hot he realy knows how to rock that voice is The best in rock history for sure 🧍♂️🎸❤️❤️❤️❤️🥰😎💋💋💯

May I request the 12/04/91 show please? Thanks!
Ahh the building that Krist was and is still band from. But still got in.
I understand that your comment is a year old, and you may not use this account anymore, I'll give it a shot anyways.
But I was wondering why he was banned?
Due to Krists behaviour at a Sonic Youth concert the year before he was banned from the building.
I never heard that story. Searched for it but there's nothing mentioning it online that I could find. Do you know what happened?
I was there
I was there also. Fitz of depression and Helmet opened up the show
Most people in the front row are looking around. They haven't heard any of these songs before this concert.
I was wondering why they look so lost…
Any idea who did the recording of this?
