NOT EVERYONE finds it "disturbing." ! I like it, and the more I watch it the MORE I find it; unique, Intuitive...and strangely sexual... But, in a nice way!?! But, in fact, except for Tina, I found the Venue, unfortunatly, run-of-the-mill, uninspiring and...basically...boring.
It's weird. When David Byrne does it, he's "so weird it's cool", but when Tina does her thing, it's weird? Yeah it may be a little unsettling, that's the Talking Heads thing! Love Byrne too btw.
This changed my life and I immediately bought a bass and got lessons after seeing this for the first time. Tina Weymouth is so inspiring, and made playing bass seem so smooth and feminine in this performance. She is the best!!
I had my 10 min. of fame back in the 1960s in San Francisco, with the folks at The Cow Palace, i.e. the Doors, Jefferson Airplane, etc. But, YEAH. This makes me want go find my antique Fender and relive some of those moments from the Old Height Ashbury. AND, YES, " She is the best!!" Talent and brains and a personality to match. Unique.
Much as I love TH and theTTC; I gotta admit those back up singers MADE this show. They were so fun. What a blast it was to see in person, one of my best youthful memories. : D
To be fair, Chris and Tina didn't realize that this would be included in the movie. This is one of those songs that would seem almost impossible to pull off live, but, with help from that amazing backing band, it works. Even with Chris's crazy shouts. Meanwhile, David Byrne had enough time to change into that big-ass suit. Stop Making Sense is arguably the greatest concert film ever made.
Chris Frantz at last night's Talking Heads Q&A reunion answering a question about his favorite song from the film: "Well, I love Genius of Love, of course... but I really wish I had shut up more when we did that song..."
@@mick2spic I got this live CD as a gift, not too familiar with the talking heads outside of a few songs I like. That was my favorite part of the song. I think he's an awesome m.c. I think him being dry adds such a wonderful juxtaposition to the funk and soulfulness of the song. Same with the main vocals. If he shut up I don't think this song would be as good as it is. Although had I ben a little more familiar with the band I might have a totally different perspective haha.
to all the comments about the bass being overdubbed --> what you need to remember is that this is a concert "film", they take shots from different parts of the song so as to have a better visual flow, if you look at the other musicians you'll notice what they are doing doesn't sync up at times either, doesn't mean it isn't live it just means that the editor thought this or that shot looked better for that moment and substituted it.
It's sad that we're all getting older, and some of these guys are dead. Here everyone looks so young and excited, and everyone in their prime. I went to the movies to see "Stop Making Sense" just after it first came out. My friend had a huge crush on Tina Weymouth.
I personally love this live version. Whoever uploaded this has the audio all out of wack though. The lead vocals are turned way up and they don't blend with the instruments and backing vocals well. Also a lot of people are commenting on him being annoying and that he should have kept silent.. Honestly, I find it really funny and full of personality and I have a hard time not laughing and smiling when I hear this version! They are obviously just really fun loving people and love what they do. You can tell they ate having the time of their life!
+Metedith Easterling: Chris always looks like he's having a blast regardless of what band he's performing with or where he's playing. I've commented on that with other videos and others have noticed it too. On the other hand, I've never seen Tina look really happy while playing with The Talking Heads. You can even go back to their late 70's videos and she looks almost robotic. Look at her when they performed Psycho Killer for their induction into the Hall of Fame (2002?). She looks like she's just there. Then watch her performing with Tom Tom Club. She's very animated, smiling, jumping around-almost like she's a different person. Anyone else notice this? Watch a few vids of each band and ale your own comparison.
Michael McLoughlin One of my favorite songs, the sound of the beat & the sweet harmony. & the shout "James Brown-James Brown". It all just comes together. I think I first heard this song in 1982-It would be 20 yrs, before I found out who recorded it.

Don't sweat it. 1. There is an edit (video) right at that moment. 2. This concert-video-film was shot over 2 nights minimum. (edit the video, taking the shots you want to use, put them to the best version of the song (1st night or 2nd night). Tina has played this song (and many other much more difficult tunes) whilst laying down on the stage, dancing, singing, running, etc. And 3 (or 4) watching any video of her playing it live - it's obvious she's covering it all. :)
That's because the concert was played and recorded over the course of 3 separate shows and so there are instances when the audio and video don't match up throughout the film e.g. Tina's bass changing model/colour earlier on.
The drummer is married to the Bass player Tina Weymouth... for 30 years... they founded TalkingHeads... Terry Franz is his name... PS: Tina Weymouth's Dad, and Jim Morrison's Dad, were great friends and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1938. Served as Admirals during VietNam.
It wasn't, actually. The film was shot over three nights. This was done intentionally, to minimize the intrusion of the film crew., and the only way to do that was to record one night with cameras on stage right, and another with the cameras on stage left. This style of filming naturally leads to audio/visual discrepancies.

The drummers name is Chris Frantz, not Terry Franz. Talking Heads were founded by David Byrne, Weymouth and Frantz (Jerry Harrison joined a little bit later).
[from wikipedia] Director Jonathan Demme added "Genius of Love" to the concert primarily so that David Byrne could exit the stage and change into his oversized suit, and he assured Weymouth that the performance would not be included on the final cut of the film. When Weymouth saw an early screening of the film she was thus surprised and irritated to see "Genius of Love," but Demme refused to change anything before the official release.
That Tina Weymouth is one underrated female bass player. Would’ve been nice if she sang more background vocals during this show. Guess she didn’t seem to mind being silent.
I'm 21 years old, this came out before I was even a thought in my parents loins....but I never was really attracted to Tina, but now for some odd reason I find her and that bass incredibly sexy. Like WOW...Wow.

I go into the Starbucks across the street from where I work, in Kingston, Ontario (downtown) and the girl who serves me, Kate, looks just like her. Man, if she wasn't half my age... I would've asked that girl out right then and there.
I heard this on the live album before seeing the movie, and thought the shouting vocals on this track were David Byrne ranting from offstage since he didn't have anything else to do, lol
Whenever I hear this song I think, "Right now, David Byrne is putting on 'the suit'".
Delicate sound of thunder live performers

They shot this entire concert over 4 nights then cut the movie from all those performances Demme knew his shite
Love Tina Weymouth's bass playing (as always), dancing, and especially her singing in this video.
Great vocal harmonies and a groove that never get's old. Sound's as fresh as it did 30 years ago, a timeless classic. Great job TTC!
This is the best, time of my life.thank you.80s.and you.❤😅
I love how much fun the band is having while performing! And Tina with her hometown dance grooves is the stand out.
Go Go Tina and the Crab dance!!!!! Fantastico, Tina and Chris are fabulous together.
Awesome musicianship. Tina and her bass playing made my 20 year old heart go all aflutter.
