The glass is not completely transparent when switched on. For those believing the untinted mode will result in a glass-like appearance you may be disappointed. We installed this glass in our commercial building and although it has been received well overall, many have commented that the transparent mode is casts a 'smokey' hue and is not clear enough. Interested buyers should take this into account before purchasing and go visit the glass in action if they can find a showroom near them. Also the glass was very expensive relative to regular glass. 5 partitioned glass panels totaling 14 feet by 9 feet clocked in a 18k, with the rest of the cost going to the local distributor for installation. Finally, one of the glass pieces has a strange defect on the edge towards the bottom, it looks like a problem at the point of manufacturing that slipped through quality control. Not enough to complain about, but still there. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this glass about a 6.5-7 rating.

      Hi Eugene,
You are correct the glass is not completely transparent when switched on and we completely agree it is wise when purchasing any product that potential customers view a sample first.
There are a number of factors that will make a fairly big difference in how the Switchglass presents.
All glass, under certain light conditions, will reflect images and at times be difficult to see through clearly. This will sometimes be more obvious when the glass is viewed from an angle. The same applies to your Switchable Privacy Glass panels.
Additionally, the PDLC film within its PVB layers in this laminated glass product manifests a slight haze in its ‘on’ state, and more so when viewed at an angle.
See an example of pictures linked below here:
      www.linkedin.com/pulse/switchglass-clarity-lighting-roman-watkins/
To minimise this effect and to get the best out of your product, it is important that you, your Architect or Designer should consider the ambient and/or artificial lighting adjacent to the panels prior to its installation.
What may improve your situation Eugene is to try to balance the lighting from each side of the privacy glass so they are as even as possible. Also, any highly reflective surfaces like tiled flooring are not recommended as they can reflect the light into the glass and increase the haze. Lastly, ensure that lights are not positioned directly above the glass. With regard to measuring light, you can download a free app on your device which you may find helpful. I carried out this test and measured internal levels at 400 lumens and the external at over 10x of this which will not favour improving the haze levels.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
      Regards Roman Watkins

I’m also looking to use such a glass in my design. That tint/haze is quite noticeable in videos, I wonder if different glasses have different haze? I wonder should I wait year or two until better glass is developed...

I wanted to add my opinion. We manufacture a Smart Film in Canada that we laminate in Glass as well as apply to existing glass. There is no difference in performance or specification of our film. The only difference is the adhesive layer. Our Smart Film has one of the highest VLT 85% and low haze of less than 5%. One of the biggest differences between our film and the other top brands is we have a UL status on our film. This means we have recognized by a 3rd party as safe for sales in North America. Most competition are selling electrical products not tested to be sold in North America.

70 or 85% it's not as big of an issue once you look straight through and that's how its measured - but once you view it from the angle - the haze would dramatically increase - which is huge visual issue I think.

Also the bashing of the competition is not only unwarranted but unfair.
Smart tint is a film that is applied on your existing Glass and this product is bought with the glass, they are 2 different applications.
Also they are way diferent in price, something this company does not mention at all. Yes this film is better but it is better because you buy it in the glass and you pay way more.

Hi CoolRaul, you bring up a valid point about the cost. The customer was quoted the same as it would have been for our glass, allowing for installation. So we would have supplied a fully complete laminated Switchglass product and Smart Tint would supply a tint film only. If you are unsure please see comments from one of their customers who commented on another one of our youtube clips about their experience with Smart Tint. We are not alone in our views, please see the comments below and link for your reference.

I wish I had tried Switchglass instead of Smart Tint. Smart Tint was great and responsive in order to make the sale. Then when I experienced an issue and reached out for some assistance on troubleshooting, I received a terrible response. They accidentally left an internal email from John Adams in their response to me which directed the person who seemed willing to provide some sort of assistance "don't waste time with this guy" "if he likes he can purchase engineering time at 350 per hour" with a 2 hour minimum.
And then they stopped responding to me.
Smart Tint is the worst company I have personally dealt with for customer service in MANY years. It doesn't matter how good a product is if they don't stand behind it.

This is a completly different installation than Smart Tint, I am unrelated to smart tint but IMO, I don't think I would shop with a company who is dissing its competitors who operate with a completely different business model. You are not tint, you are glass. You create glass panes with a smart tint like product laminated in between. No sh** SwitchGlass doesn't bubble, and smart tint does. I'd imagine your installation costs are ATLEAST 5x higher than smart tint. For most people's budget smart tint is a substantially better product and does the exact same thing for a fraction the price. Looking it up, I was right on the money. Average cost for your product is $140 per sq ft, and average cost for most tint applications is $20-40 per sq ft. Not to mention the much higher installation costs and different applications. I'd imagine the cost of a curved glass installation would be astronomical compared to just wrapping the tint around a curve. This product makes sense for someone remodeling, or adding windows into an office or home space, but don't sell this product as what it's not as Switchglass and Smart Tint fill two completely different roles in the same market.

    • @Switchglass
      @Switchglass  4 роки тому

Hi Gareth, thanks for your comment, yes you are correct if it is a retrofit scenario then the original glass would need to be removed and replaced with Switchglass. I understand that this may not be the most economical or feasible option but it is the most reliable. Ideally, if it is completed from the initial construction of the build then it would be more cost-effective. Most of our work is in the new fit-out space however in some cases people will have Switchglass retrofitted latter.

    • @Switchglass
      @Switchglass  5 років тому +2

      Hi Ciprian,
For such use Switchable Privacy Glass panel/panels need to be completely fully framed, sealed and the edges impervious to water. The glass panel must be sealed into the frame to protect the glass panel's edges from ANY moisture. Where silicone is used, use only the recommended NON ACETIC silicones.
In terms of a USD per square foot price for Switchglass/Smart Glass, there are a number of things that we need to know for example:
Is it to be glazed internally or externally and will it be subjected to direct sunlight?
The glass dimensions and quantities for your particular project?
Where is it to be delivered to (e.g. State and Country)?
When do you require the Switchglass?

      Hi Smart Tint,
While in my opinion, it is a bit cheeky to pitch your products here, maybe to help our audience you can give us some feedback on what went wrong with the projects listed below.
Seems you left and Australian charity high and dry without any support.
You also accidentally sent an internal email from John Adams which directed your sales team to respond "don't waste time with this guy" "if he likes he can purchase engineering time at 350 per hour" with a 2-hour minimum. You then stopped responding?

      Hi Kristen,
As discussed we have a situation where we used the Smart-tint (from the USA) electronic glazing film on our client's Boardroom with less than impressive results.
The supplier will not replace the product which has left us in a sticky situation and an unhappy client. The client is a registered Aboriginal Charity (Thalanyji www.thalanyji.com.au/ )
Would you be able to provide a quotation to supply & install your most economical system (5 x 5mm glass with switchable film?) to the dimensions shown on the attached?
We would appreciate if you & your management could offer a discounted price to achieve this.
Here's another one for your comment:

There's a lot of bullshit in your video. First off, the clarity of the film is NOT related to the point of installation. Whether it's laminated at time of glazing manufacturer, or retrofitted will have no impact on clarity.
Second, retrofitting glass vs. buying new glass/removing existing/installing new is a HUGE difference financially. Retrofitting smart film requires GOOD installation techniques and methods. Obtaining a dust/contamination free install is the job of a good installer.
