    Hi David , you still have another clear protective layer of film to take off. Manufacturers have this on all Smartfilm products to protect the actual Smartfilm that is adheared to the glass. You need it on in the installation stage because you are essentially pushing it on with a felt tip applicator with can produce fine micro scratches whilst installing. On One side it protects the sticky side and the other side protects whilst installing. You'll find when you take it off how much more clearer it actually is.

    Used to work in an office with a meeting room with windows made of something similar to this. But they were crystal clear in one mode and totally obscured in the other mode. It was always a talking point for visitors. Horrendously expensive though when it was put in about 20 years ago.
    Great to see something similar available in the hobby market.

    • @gregclare
      @gregclare 5 років тому

      Gavin Smalley Yes, plus I was thinking that in a meeting room application the “not in use” state would presumably be transparent. So you would need to have power applied all the time, except when you wanted meeting privacy. So would ideally be the other way. ie. Transparent until you turned the power on!

    I wonder if there's a protective film stuck on the panel to protect it from scratches during shipping. That might explain why it's not as clear as expected.

    I think the samples I have are clearer when on, they were expensive (c.£400 for about 6 small squares) so I expect the material quality is high. It is a cool product, hope you find a good use for it.

    I did my project from Xiaomi Mi Band 3 as SMARTGLASSES.
    Xiaomi Mi Band 3 has a specific build - doesn't have touchscreen but has touch panel separately.
    When you fix it to glasses or to your head by band you have access to HR tracking from superficial temporal artery , GPS tracking and more...
    My blueprints (3D print model) is on Turbo squid "Smart glasses Vitoculus from Xiaomi Mi Band3 3D"

    2:30 - well it's not a truth. If you look inside that switch you'll find PDLC film is connected in series with RC combo (R and C are in parallel) - RC elements values are set so the effective voltage you see on PDLC film is... 40 - 60 VAC depending on the sample. It's just the simpliest and the cheapest way to power this PDLC film sample. If you want to put PDLC on your window, big one, i'll need a dedicated power supply (i.e. with trafo and triac inside).

    I wonder if the load was pulling down your EL wire power supply to the 1.x volts? It will be really interesting to see what power this draws, and what the minimum activation voltage level is. Also, if it is gradual or if there is a switching threshold (which I assume is more likely). Being like LCD you’d kinda expect minimal power usage though. 🤔

    • @cheetahkid
      @cheetahkid 5 років тому

      EL supply isn't good if it a high frequency is use, not very effective.

  • @cheetahkid

    I got one of those, I thought 230V ac was too much and dangerous, it should have been anywhere between 15 to 72V ac, I have a pair of 30V ac transformer and put it in series, to give me 60V ac, that works fine. Thing need to test, what the current draw at 60V ac? and 230V ac?, it should be around 5W per square metre as far I could remember. If the wattage is higher, it might likely to burn quicker and shorter life cycle. I find there are a handful of helpful information on the internet. That something you can experiment on youtube. Have fun.
