    15:40 - you reefed because you don't want to mechanically stress the boat and its rig. Appreciated. Your boat is relatively light. I'm aware of a 12m monohull that was built for racing only, and she would fly from the top of a wave to the next where it dove into the top of that next wave. Bam. It was so light that even reefed more than you have, she would fly like a surfboard. This gives stresses that conventional sailing engineering cannot deal with.
    While you and I know that
    here's my question regarding your boat. When you fly the spinaker, does that lift the boat more out of the water?

    Aww you didn't hit something this episode...Keep sailing. I was wondering does your dog bark constantly at birds now in the marina? Since training your dog, I was just wondering if that behavior has changed in a marina setting. I would think Roxy might get confused if told not to in a marina and won't do it at sea anymore.

    • @SailingSweetRuca
      @SailingSweetRuca  2 роки тому +1

      Haha! I know we are supposed to avoid hitting stuff but UA-cam seems to like it...
      Roxy only really barks at birds if they are squawking a lot or of we get her amped up to do so. She's fairly quiet. Sometimes in a marina there will be what I call "a little yapper dog" and Roxy will enjoy a conversation with them. We usually try to quiet her in this case. She's usually pretty good, but of course can't resist a conversation with another dog at the marina from time to time. Usually we avoid marinas, but as you know it's sometimes the only option. The carbon racing headsail or jib is a beautiful thing - but while a thing of beauty is a joy forever there's reality - how long is such a hi-tech thing supposed to last? From another sailor with racing sails, I got the impression they last much less long than more conventional sails, almost to the point I call them consumables. I would call the process of degrading "ageing" but this has two factors, time aside: first, exposure to the elements like UV radiation and heat or temperature fluctuations, and second, mechanical load (wind related forces). Somewhere there are causes of material fatigue in there and the thread and/or weave disintegrate.
    Here then, question is if there is any (spray) coating that can reduce the environmental causes of ageing.

    I unsubscribed because last week you said this week you were going to get to the damage caused by whatever you hit and you didn't. Than you basically did the same thing this week. If you weren't going to reveal the damage you never should have alluded to it, it should have come out in the normal course of telling the story of the trip. You revealed the ending of episode 12 at the beginning of episode 1 and that's bad story telling.

      You all don't get it do you, the story should have gone something like this. We hit something; we don't know what it was but we definitely hit something. It concerned us so much we stopped in the middle of the ocean to look, but didn't see much damage just a few scrapes. Then the following episodes, something's not right, we start investigating and find nothing new, but the symptoms are getting worse, and we start having problems. The episode that the damage is revealed is when we see the boat on the hard in the opening scene and in the episode sailing to the port and getting lifted out. I feel that's how it should have been done, it builds suspense, anticipation and gives us a desire to come back for more. That's my opinion, take it for what it's worth.
