- Once labeled a "youth-at-risk," 30-year old Matt Rutherford risked it all in an attempt to become the first person to sail alone, nonstop around North and South America. Red Dot on the Ocean is the story of Matt's death-defying voyage and the childhood odyssey that shaped him.

Director: Amy Flannery
Starring: Matt Rutherford
Red Dot on the Ocean is the story of Matt Rutherford, a severely troubled youth, who became a sailing legend. Departing Annapolis, MD in a scrappy old 27-foot fiberglass sloop without fanfare, 30-year-old Rutherford braved the icebergs of the arctic and mountainous waves of Cape Horn to become the only person to ever sail single-handed, non-stop around the Americas; a 27,000 mile journey many professional sailors declared "a suicide mission." As a youngster, Matt's ADHD and tics made life at home and at school near-impossible. At age 13 he was in drug rehab and he spent his remaining teen years more on the streets than in school. Then, at age 17, locked up in a cell, he had an epiphany and decided to turn his life around. Matt attended and excelled at a special high school for troubled youth where he developed a desire to explore the world. After graduating, he bought his first sailboat - sight unseen on the Internet. Over the next few years he bought boats on the cheap, fixed them up, and learned to sail on the fly. In 2008, Matt embarked on a single-handed voyage from the USA to Europe, West Africa and back across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. He'd found his calling. In 2011, Matt took on his biggest challenge: a solo, nonstop circumnavigation of the Americas. He did it for himself, and to raise money for disabled sailors. After 309 days at sea, Matt achieved his goal and sailed into Annapolis to a hero's welcome. Matt's story is told through his own words and interviews with his family, sailing experts, and others. We use family photos and video of his childhood; Matt's own footage of his early sailing days; and video, audio logs, and stills from his historic around the Americas voyage. To this we add additional ocean footage; archival visuals of earlier explorers Matt admires; and re-enactments from Matt's troubled past. Matt Rutherford's story is full of surprises. It is truly inspiring and makes us all feel we can do more than we ever imagined. - Розваги
The Albin, Vega 27 sailboat he sailed doesn't get enough discussion. What an amazing story, a 50 year old boat gets minor, minimum maintenance prior to sailing through 3 of probably the 10 worst areas to sail through regarding pure punishment for the boat. That boat held together. She was leaking from stem to stern, getting knocked down, getting slammed by monster waves, getting slammed by monster winds, and she got him home safely. A testament to fiberglass boats and more specifically Albin boats! Cheers!
Completely agree! Do you know whatever happened to the boat? I grew up sailing on a boat manufactured by the same company.
He was going to "donate" it to a museum, but they wanted money so he just sold it to someone to raise money for his non-profit organization.
Do you happen to know anything about Don Pye boats? He was with Holman and Pye out of the UK and designed my boat hustler35.
Outstanding achievement in sailing terms and more importantly a turn around in social behavior. A phenomenal story that brought out his personal life , his family and his passion. Awesome stuff Matt .
I’ve been listing to the single handed sailing podcast I’m glad I found this
I'm an armchair wannabe senior sailor. This will be my inspiration. Thank You Matt. May fair winds be with you for all the days of your life.
Such an inspiring young man. What a story. Was in tears as he completed his journey and put his feet on solid ground.
Ditto
Hello from Germany/ I am a man and since I am getting older I do cry more. Mostly listening to certain kind of music and looking at some pictures. But this story made me cry too because of what we as people could do. I did live my dream for 40 years. Much love and Gesundheit from the old country. I do believe in dreams and love.
Respect!! That Albin is POWERFULLY noteworthy for keeping her Crew Alive in the most inhospitable sailing conditions, where the Best of the BEST sailors are equally Disabled! I am an OLD, infrequent Offshore, and Disabled, Single-hand Sailor... Boat builder and restorer of basket case sailboats on Sauvie Island Oregon, with rigging that gives my fellow Disabled, access to the Ability of earning their wings through Sailing achievement! This Old Salt truly RESPECTS Matt as the BEST OF THE BEST for showing the Sailing Snobs in most yacht clubs, that they are the disabled ones.. bitches (Huge Smile).
PLEASE invest in local schools, and share your skills with our future generations like Matt and his Community
Holy cow I don't believe this, I compared the Albin Vega to my 1985 Pearson 27 Triton and barring my spade rudder, they're very similar in statistics. But I don't think I'd ever try what he did. No, I know I wouldn't try what he did! That's just amazing. I love it that he just wore jeans and regular stuff, not expensive sailing gear. But that's probably why he got that rash! When he said that he doesn't want to go to land because he has adjusted to the ocean, he's in the rhythm, etc, I want to have that feeling some day. Fiberglass sailboats are just amazing machines, unbelievable. Thank you Matt!
I'm doing a similar voyage, similar situation. Seeing someone else do it makes me even more determined. Thank you Matt.
Everybody and their dog sails around the world these days. I just watched a video where a 15 year old girl did it all by herself. No big deal.
@@ylekiote99999 14 when she set out, if you're talking about Laura Dekker.
Super inspirational . Suicidal mission with a 2 percent chance to survive and a 0.01 percent chance to succeed . Fearless and heart broken with a will to help someone else , that's what got him there. So glad that he succeeded.
Great documentary of this historical event !
How did you come up with these statistics?
Most amazing thing Ive seen. I Wonder how many like Matt are out there that never went sailing.?
By the end of this video I was crying with pride to witness (via this video) a Human, Being...and not just just Being for himself, but for others as well! Thank you, Matt, for Being a good Human. It's inspiring on a level above and beyond what others thought you could be, you could do! Thank you for being you, Sir!
Feels like I do know you cause of your name, Awesome and kind words from you. Much love and Gesundheit from Germany.

This should inspire anybody. I am 63 and I hope I still have plenty of time for big adventures. I have had a crazy life so far. I can't sail, but have grown up with the sea. The plan is to buy one of these boats and solo sail her from the UK to Thailand and from there who knows!
Sooooo inspiring! Great story of passion and strength of character. I have just started sailing, at 54:) P.S. love the music.....sounds like Snotty nose Rez kids.
Such a great story
Such an incredible human been
Amazing! Thank you for sharing this.
Wow what a fantastic documentary . Very inspiring. I'd like to know where to see all the video blogs for the whole trip
👏👏👏 your acts, they preach a powerful message. I hope this video reaches many.
I always told parents of my ADHD elementary students no medication. Medication messes these children up. I would tell the parents “let me handle him”. They were blue collar and were with me. I would put ADHD student off to side of class by themself. Then I made sure we went outside to play a lot. Also take lots of breaks during day in class to socialize.
I told the parents that ADHD students become successful later in life if they can stay out of trouble. They become your contractors, successful business owners etc.
I wish you were my teacher.
God bless you
They gave me ritolyn it fucked my head for years . Why can't they just except us . Leave us alone !we build race cars . We invent all the things, write all the songs and break all the records . We drive the machines that build all the roads . We maintain and Invent all the machines that build all the roads .
No we won't sit still ,sit up straight and face the front . Go fuck yourselves.
Nero typically people just sell insurance and work retail . They are the stupid ones not us .
@@avancalledrupert5130 Best comment ever.
@@popeyethesailor6337 I genuinely consider so called normal people as dumb . They take to long to make a decision on anything . They lurn painfully slow and it's wrote lurning through repetition. Then they still don't believe they know it until somebody tells them.
They always looking for permission. Then they assume you as stupid as them . They be like how do you know that . You said you didn't know anything about that .
I didn't that was 3 months ago I've since read everything that exists on the topic. How . Well I've spent 5 hrs a day reading and 14 hrs a day thinking about what I just read .
You can't have retained it all. Erm I think you find I can because it's interesting.
If it wasn't for ADHD and autistic people humans would still be diying in the village they were borne and burning withches 😆🙄
Much respect for doing this. Enjoyed every minute.
Awesome! Thanks!!
Years ago, one day when I was sick af with a stomach virus I watched this on some local channel. Always kinda stuck with me some reason.
Good stuff Matt!!! It’s good to be reminded with odds stacked against us, it only makes us stronger to achieve great things :)
Awesome achievement! It's hard to envision doing what Matt did. As a Swede I like the choice of boat!
This was great and I enjoyed it immensely. Respectfully I don't agree with "the point of life is happiness" concept but I learned a few things along the way in this film regardless. Best wishes and thanks for sharing.
Hell Yah Matt! You are a young LEGEND....the Real Goods.....we are ALIVE and life is beautiful...and thats it...namaste, Finnster
I love this story. This is the reason I stay connected to the internet (no phone or cable TV).
Same!
Incredible inspiring story. Congrats Matt!
Svaka ti čast Momak!
Awesome and inspiring, definitely picked the right boat.
Excellent doco movie , he is very brave sailing in that size boat .. I been sailing since young age I Don't think I would sail around in one that small .. Fantastic achievement ...

Danke from Germany/ a truly inspiring person on a mission. WOW! Believe in your dream and do it.
An amazing story, “You never know just what you can do until you try.”
Matt you are a hero to me brother. good inspiration
Matt and his voyage pops up to my mind every time I see Vega!
Nice Job, Matt… truly inspirational, I don’t think that you sett out to be inspirational so Don’t take that the wrong way, you set out to help people, that my friend puts you in a small class of the Greats… and that is truly inspirational.! I’m looking forward to being a spectator on your next adventure.. God Bless
I'm proud of that kid holyshit. Excellent job Matt!
God Damn I absolutely love your intro song!!!!
mesmerized and inspired 😊🌱
Excellent film, I love stories of the sea and this one was the best. Well done and next trip to visit NZ
Loved Matt’s style and humbleness
Amazing well done Mat you are the man 👌👌👌
Best top 5 documentary’s I watched
great doc
Amazing
Congrats, all the best
Great movie!
Incredible story
I cannot believe he made it through the northwest passage. Only a handfull of people ever sailed the northwest passage with far more dying in the attempt. Now hes bummed? I cannot believe he did not stop. After the leaky fkn bladder and that was before entering the passage to boot!
Amazing man!!! I identify as any entire family have adhd to the max! Fortunately i am like Max I have the ability to hyper focus. Also like Max I’m obsessed with Arctic exploration and Shackleton in particular lol! I never thought about it before but Max is exactly the person I imagined Shackleton to be. Max would fit the prototype for the best of them!
I respect this guy so much.
Matt had his own demons, but I don't think his father knew how to handle him. Despite his circumstances Matt has accomplished things people could only dream of. You have an amazing story.
Just finished watching for the 2nd time. That's what turning your life around looks like.
The first time I seen your story I feel like you congratulations on what you have done I'm 62 years old and feel like I missed everything I have a 36 ft y'all and haven't had it out yet help.
Such an amazing, phenomenal as well as inspirational story! Btw, whatever happened to Matt's boat?
That really loud noise you heard is calving ice breaking off the glacier. I don’t know if you remember me or not but I was watching your trip around the Americas back during the time I was living the dream on my 35’ Choey Lee in Poquoson, VA. I’m currently looking for a new to me used sailboat currently in Los Angless. Where I will sail her down to the horn and back to the East Coast solo if I have to only need a current passport if I stop anywhere.
Big mad fat props skipper! ❤ Seattle
good to see my hometown Annapolis.
That is a great story
Inspirational
Great to hear someone with enough compassion go save a fish ! thanks, a
I just cannot fathom being in the water that long and not having a rod and reel.
Probably least of his worries but is my first thought. FISHING!!!
Brave young man. Way more than I am.
I hated school and barely graduated.
Yet some years I have made 6x’s what a teachers salary is.
ADD kids are smart. Some VERY smart. We just learn differently.
The mainstream system just isn't capable of adaptation to the special needs of ADHD people.
+1 for the thoughts of fishing
what is your job?
Brilliant Matt - Cant believe it is 2023 and I only found your story today! What are you up to now? /pc
Nearly started crying when he stepped off that boat.
I hear ya!
Amazing voyage. I sailed a 27 footer, nice manageable size.
This kid is legend 🙌 👏 ❤️
What an great guy what courage ❤️❤️❤️ respect for him !!!
Good
This is a hilarious mockumentary of epic proportion subpar to spinal tap yet even more so to gone with the phart!
I do know this is true right ?
Inspired.
Good For You Young Man 👍🙏
What brand of water maker did he have?
Another Rutherford.. Sir Earnest Rutherford was another great Rutherford. Must be a family thing.
That boat really did look worse for wear at the end of it all. These sailing videos really do separate the truly genuine sailors from the posers. An inspiring story. But he did learn saying skills before he left for this trip. There is a lot of skill involved in sailing.
Nature only let him live.
Great in every way.
Is the theme song available anywhere?
More balls than a ship full of marines indeed! This is my inspiration as I prepare to set sail at age 69. With one ovary and a boyfriend who is a lot like Matt. How lucky am I?
Oh my lord he made it! Just the nw passage just the entire pacific straight down the middle just cape horn alone then all the way back up the entire atlantic all in that broken ass boat. His diesel bladder busted on both ends before entering the northwest passage. Holy fuk!
the opening song... any chance somebody knows who that is preforming it?
Matt Rutherford?
Inspires me to follow my dream of circumnavigating the entire Pacific Ocean starting from Vancouver Island and heading south along the coast of the Americas . . . etc. Solo and nonstop would be the plan on my 30' cutter (I have no idea of the make - I just know she's built for blue-water). Aah, to dream.
Just heard him on Paul Tramell's podcast. Interesting dude
my boss is Poseidon - LEGEND SHIT
what a remarkable human being!
which Song is that at 34:30?
Very impressive and a very lucky young man, however, not having radar and a safety harness was foolish and reckless.
Yo yo my boy Matt Sailorford
