- Is it even possible? How does it work? I bet everyone is wondering! This video is a must-see if you’re considering investing the huge amount of money into the anniversary set consisting of the new Microtech Luminary Automatic OTF knife and Surefire Stiletto 2 flash light.
This is neither a review nor a full disassembly video. Let’s discover the design behind this marvel of knife technology.

This was a very interesting deep dive into the latest OTF technology. LMK what’s on your mind. Are you looking to update to this style once the production model comes out?
You told me i have an interesting job as a land surveyor. Hats off, i salute you!!! This is the stuff i do for fun.
I have been saying for almost all of this year that Microtech was delivering a lot of upgrades for no or little money. Titanium back spacers, titanium pocket clips, integrated lanyard / clip holder / titanium glass breaker housing and dual fuel easy deploy, some careless models, the change to torx, type III anodizing on the natural clear models… I see these as enormous upgrades and rare for a company to deliver without charging much… now with this minimal blade play design and ability to adjust and all of the above upgrades for less than $50 is just incredible in my eyes. Having you take this apart and show us is icing on the cake - kudos to Microtech and you!
More like they are providing features that should've existed at this price point to begin with lol. Its them staying competitive.
@@vurvurvur I don’t agree at all, spyderco and Benchmade are all priced near or over $200 and they are plastic with steel pocket clips.
What a fun thumbnail!
And no AI… Thanks!
Thumbnails are gorgeous on this channel indeed
Thanks for taking the time to do this brother. Excellent as always

That was some great information…I was curious how that no play was done. Thank you for all you do.
@@kelloggcd Glad you enjoyed it! BTW Curiosity! That was my excuse to buy a new limited edition Microtech! 🤣
@ I just ordered my first OTF - Microtech combat troodon. I need to rewatch some of your videos…get familiar with the inner workings. I’ll be curious what the blade play is on that model. Have a great week.
@ So, the blade play isn’t a big deal from the practical point of view. In fact, if not properly designed, that may lead to more disadvantages than advantages. I will be following up with a torture test video soon and will cover the topic there.
Look up Grant and Gavin Hawk Deadlock OTF
@windowbreezes thanks for the recommendation! I watched his video and it reminded me of how the very early semiauto pistols were designed. Super steam punk! It’s like Luger vs. Glock.
Great job! Very interesting.
man I can't wait for your torture test of this new mechanism! 👊🏽
@@whodemiz583 already done. Working on editing the footage into a video. Thanks for subscribing!
@@CuttingBoardRx I just hope it does well because I'd really like to get a microtech with this mechanism in the future 😁
Fantastic break down! My inner knife geek loves this.
Awesome video. Very interesting

Wonder how long before wear is seen on the channel?
That is very impressive design. I love seeing how things work. It helps to demystify things.
Thank you ill never own one so this is the only way I'd see how it works.
knife lenin is excited!
Interesting design, entertaining video!
@@mel87123 I wonder how many were they able to sell…
Thanks for the detailed information

I was curious to see how microtech did it, glad to see they didn’t just rip off the mechanism from the G&G hawk deadlock.
@@alexp974 Nope, they didn’t. It’s like comparing G41 to M1 Garand. Or C96 to FN Five Seven. Totally different action!
my only issue is they copied the track system from the deadlock but used the locking tabs instead, so it wasn't a complete copy. i was hoping Microtech would invent their own system.
@ all these mechanical interfaces and locking systems exist in firearms, metal cutting equipment, bicycles, and locomotives for at least 120 years. So anything we see as “new” in knives is an adaptation anyway.
@CuttingBoardRx im my opinion this would be like Glock saying they were innovative for using the tilting barrel without paying any tribute to who designed the system. idc that theu are using it but i wish they were honest on who they go the design from.
@@HappyWifeHappyKnife Well, every modern pistol is based on one or more of John Browning’s design solutions. For that matter, we could go all the way back to Archimedes and say all drill bits, steam engines and, oh yeah, OTF autos should be credited to him! Because he designed some siege engines that were used for hundreds of years?
Very nice teacher! I’ll bring you an apple 🍎 completely enjoyed that. Always ask why!
Not only ingeniously simple, but I love the look of that giant secret torx "UFO" in the blade. Looking forward to the video putting it to the test.
On a somewhat related note, I picked up an 08/24 build date MSI and Microtech seems to have further updated the lock geometry. The previous iterations had a small ramp cut into the bottom and center of the ram-lok like an upside-down canoe. The ram-lok on mine however has no underside ramp like you showed in your previous videos, and I'm guessing it's because they finally updated the geometry of the locking surface on the blade tang like it needed from the beginning IMO. Lock up is like a bank on my example.
@@R1NR4N Thanks for info on the MSI, after Tony Marfione sent me a personal letter of appreciation for discovering the issue and his humble apology for not recalling the deficient design…. Yeah, right 🤣😂🤣
I bought an aluminum version and it has the change you discovered. I think I mentioned it in a video.
What size is the screw slash lanyard hole?
Very interesting!
Thanks for the disassembly. Clever solution. I like to put graphite on all the bearing/sliding surfaces of OTFs because I don’t think it adds drag like other lubricants.
Do you think the clamshell body could flex enough under twist or impact that it could slip from behind those retaining screws it captures (it seems like such little movement to grab them it seems hard to imagine there is much material there)?
Thanks for the video, CBRx.
Doesn't it remind you?
look at the - G&G Hawk Deadlock Model C
Do the water sand test on it and torture test please
@@erinsquirkychannel501 Waiting for the Ultratech with the same lock that is coming out next week. Already have one reserved for me at a local dealer as they are guaranteed to sell out! It’s more “affordable” at $380…
The pin sliding in the groove to achieve zero blade play is a copy of the Hawk Knife Deadlock solution. How is this possible when their patent is valid until 2036?
@@mgm562 Hawk patented the locking system where the locking tabs are mounted on the blade. Groove and pin interface existed since the Pyramids, can’t be patented. I’m surprised they got even that through the Patented Office.
I wondered how the blade play was adjusted. Does anyone else use Bel-Ray synthetic grease in VERY sparing amounts?
i wait 4 a UT 3 :D
Very clever mechanics, i just hope they will upgrade the general looks of the handle. Now it looks like (for me) a cheap clone of itself 🤷🏻.
@@pandamacska I think there could be more texturing on the sides, but overall it doesn’t feel cheap. The sides are slightly contoured towards the spines, which may be a first one for them.
That's a bevel not a taper
If you insist on being that technical, taper is a measure of a conical slope while bevel is a term applied to linear components. So, in this case, the UFO has a taper, while the channel has a bevel. This particular bevel has a slope that matches the taper. I do appreciate the hair splitting in terminology and wish to thank you for the comment!
UFO - Unique/Unidentified Fastening Object?
@@Rottidog68 As long as it transcends the time and space continuum, I’m good with that name!
I thought just opening a microtech up voids the warranty? Not being sarcastic that's what I've heard several times
That’s their old warranty policy. As long as you don’t strip or modify/alter the internals, you should be good.
Zero Blade Play, means also very sensitive to any dirt and te Blade will stuck!!!
@@nenadcubric2663 no need to speculate, just watch my other video: Can it take abusive tests? Microtech Luminary Zero Blade Tolerance no play lock

I really don't understand why anyone would buy this. The price is outrageous. Considering they are coming out with a no play ultratech for basically the same price as the old one.
I really don't understand why anyone buy an original 😂🤣
@SteppingR The newest gen micro techs are really smooth. I have a first gen combat troodon. I hate it lol. My buddy has a newer one. It's night and day different.
