I’ve been following your channel for some time and really used your comments to spec and purchase my F150. Like you, I cancelled my build order and bought one off the lot for a couple reasons. 1) I got a 22 which had blue cruise activated from the get go. 2) they fixed a lot of the quirks with software updates. FWIW my spec is almost identical to yours except I’ve got the super bougie running boards, I wouldn’t have gotten them, but it was what was available. I love my truck, it’s incredible, best truck I’ve owned.
I agree with you like points,,,, I am located on foothills and as a photographer and mountain sports enthusiast going to mountains almost daily and that's the spot where powerboost shines, up to mountains has very good milage but coming back is basically free, lets say when I left the house the on board comp says 300 miles in tank and after 60 mile trip often says maybe +/- 5 miles before I left........... understand the dash comp is not very accurate but for sure in my kind riding/location I have 20-30 % of electric miles of any non highway trip, love it! Cheers V!
This truck was made for contractors who work in cities. All my mileage (15k a year) is city mileage and many people don’t have outlets outside…not having to load and unload a generator every morning and night is a luxury
I have a 2018 F150 2.7 Ecoboost with pretty low tech and I love this truck. I currently have a reservation for the Lightning with a pretty early reservation hoping to order my truck soon. You doing a positive review of electrical issues being resolved gives me a little hope and peace of mind of moving forward with the Lightning.
I have about 2500 miles on mine and no issues yet. In December I bought an 2021 XLT Powerboost and got $2500 in rebates from Ford as well with a bunch of upgrades including the 7.2 KW Pro Power Onboard Generator and 302A package. I am in NY so cold here and overall getting just over 20 MPG so can't complain since ownership. I drive 80 miles a day and was looking for a fuel economy truck and can't wait for the warmer weather to see what I can get out of it. Glad the truck is finally turning the corner for you :)
7:15 is the core decision point for me. Love the idea and benefits of the PB, just not sure if I want to spend the total extra $ for the PB and 7.2 (>$6k Cdn right now). I think if someone really wants to make an argument of “cost of generator”, another way to think of it is: the PB is a 7.2kw generator…. with up to a 30gal tank! (which isn’t taking up any more volume in your truck or garage). So it’s worth is more nuanced than just comparing the cost of the option or cost of a generator alone, IMO. Look forward to a 6mos review to see if the positive feelings are still there!
I've had my eye on a used F150 Powerboost. It had a car fax in the dealer listing and showed it had a recall. A bit of a deep dive just heard about a recall on the F150. Group 301 and above. Sound and heat insulators that can drop or droop and touch the drive shaft. In a few cases, it scored the drive shaft to the point that it caused a fracture.
I liked your detailed review of the features you covered. I'm glad your beginning to really like your truck and I hope all the prior issues remain in the past. For me, the basic ride quality is what matters most. Why? Because that's what I will be experiencing most of the time I use the truck. And if the ride equality is lacking then that will always be dragging on my experience of the vehicle. Everyone says this is one of the best riding trucks out there. Gord
I just pulled the trigger and upgraded my 2011 F150 Lariat. Purchased a new Lariat a few days ago for $70,000. Nine (9) miles into my driving on the way home my air conditioning Quit working. It's in for service now. I am experiencing major buyers remorse. My large downpayment check isn't even cashed yet!
Glad to see you are happier with your truck. I have watched a lot of your videos. I bought the 2021 F-150 Sport 4x4 crew cab and am loving it. Think swing cases will be next. However I want to get the tailgate light, would love to see your opinion on this and install video if you do install one. The bracket on step tailgate is a concern so have not gone and gotten one.
I noticed RELIABILITY wasn’t in there. Great truck but I’ll keep my 2015 Tundra . I’ve had two f150s that nickel and dined me. I do like the powerboost concept with on board power.though.
Also working out of your truck (or taking a nap) and being able to run the heat and AC without running the engine Edit: Nevermind, you said that at 6:00. Next time I’ll wait until the video is over before commenting.
Something that just about every reviewer of the PowerBoost has missed on was talking about payload and that is something that those of us who tow find most crucial in a new vehicle. The PowerBoost is going to give a 200lb hit on payload, even after getting a 300 lb add in total payload from Ford, as the hybrid system adds 500 lbs to the total weight of the truck. A fully optioned Platinum can leave the truck buyer with an available payload of only 1100-1200 lbs which, if you assume only 350 lbs for driver and one passenger, doesn't leave much capacity for hitch weight. Add in a couple more passengers and you're only going to be able to tow a 5000-6000 lb boat or trailer and the vehicle will be maxed out, regardless if Ford says it can tow 12000 lbs.
Very fair point. I’m not a big payload guy so it isn’t something I worry too much about. I honestly think those kinds of payload concerned guys should be going for a 3/4 ton anyway especially as these higher trim levels start encroaching on 3/4 ton diesel prices anyway. I nearly made the jump simply because an extra few grand would have had me in a modestly optioned 3/4 but I had a moment of honesty that I just don’t need it at this time.
Ross - Agree w/ payload. My Lariat with sunroof and everything else has a payload of 1450. I regularly put 2000 to 2500 and the truck handles it well, that being said balancing the weight by putting some in the cab makes a big difference. So with me, a full tank of gas, some supplies and 2000lbs of work gear it does great for short trips, etc. Note that some RAM versions have payload as low 875! Which is 4 people and a tank of gas!
I didn’t get the power boost. I got the 3.5 L TwinTurbo V6. I did not need excellent gas mileage as I am retired and don’t depend on it to get me to and from work. So the generator would’ve been like totally useless to me except for maybe if we had a home power outage for a long amount of time which I’m hoping that doesn’t happen anyway I already have a Generac on my house so that’s the story lol!
Can you either do a video or if you already have point me to it about the mount and placement of your radar detector. I see you have the escort. I do as well. I like how you have yours mounted under your mirror and the placement of the cancel switch thing. Thanks!
Likewise. I came for the F150 reviews and concerns with mine and a) stayed for great content b) ended up uploading my very first video. Quickly learning to love your channel Dan!
I have the Lariat PowerBoost also with 7.2kw. I see you have the swing out case. I live up north in Canada, Thompson, Manitoba to be exact and going thorough -30 Celsius weather for weeks and I’m impressed by how much the truck still runs on the hybrid battery. Is that specific for the year cause I can only find ones that fit 2015-2020.
I love my Platinum powerboost. My one complaint is the vibration in the steering wheel for lane keeping. I live in PA. We don’t have straight roads and I have to do a lot of pothole avoiding. Id like to turn that feature off.
Turn it off. Took me a minute to figure out how, but so happy that I was able to. You can change the setting for it in the display console, or press the button on the lower left part of your steering wheel buttons
Service manager at my dealer says don't do - 1 reason the truck has port and direct injection so w/ top tier gas the valves will stay clean and 2 cutting a hose and changing the volume (length) of the "system" will eventually throw all kinds of codes w/ the check engine light. He also commented they tested the crap out of the PB and apart from the software tweeks and a few other things, it is built to last. One last point he mentioned - do all the maintenance and do it more often, it should be able to go 250 to 200K w/out major work.
I'm having the same issue with my sync dimming and going black and i noticed my stereo chirps when the truck is off. It randomly does it and never saves my dash options. Do you know if this is all related to the axillary power module. Ford finally called me with a new module. I started having issues back in September of 2021. Every so often i smell burning plastic and i also had my ac blowing hot air once but never did it again. Just wondering if anyone else had these issues and hard shifting but it was slightly corrected with a update. My truck has been in the shop a ridiculous amount of times
Do you love the battery power? I’m hearing about how crazy expensive those batteries are to replace when need be I know it’s not until like 100,000 miles but what does that kind of suck up your savings of being a hybrid?
I agree with most of your points. I could provide 5 significant complaints of my truck which is similarly specd to yours. Aside from those, I love the truck for what I use it for. I came from an E63s wagon to this lol. That car was a rocket 605hp 630 tq and did the 1/4 in 11.1. Life changed and I needed a truck and didn't want multiple vehicles anymore. I was looking at a Tundra but it seemed ancient compared to the Ford. I'll keep this truck for another two years so I don't care about reliability.
I have enjoyed watching your f150 content over the last few months. We have a 21 XLT Powerstroke diesel that we purchased back in June and have really enjoyed it, mostly for the great mpg but also because of the quiet cabin and great ride. Regarding OTA updates….for the last couple of months, our “automatic Updates” tab has been locked to “off”….no way to turn it on. Curious if you’ve encountered that. I’ve read online that others have had that happen. All the tech is working fine, so It really hasn’t been a priority to get it looked at by the dealer.
Chris I have a 2021 f150 limited powerboost and I am having the same problem I took it to the ford dealership after running a diagnostic check it turns out the problem is the apin it will not turn on to receive the automatic updates which control the electronics the dealership order a new apin I just waiting to get installed I think if you take to the dealership have them running a diagnostic check why the over the air updates are working the problem if you don’t get it fixed you will not able to get the blue Cruz when in come available they will tell you to replace the apin which is located behind the radio hope this will help you
I hope you got the bugs worked out. The F150 is growing on me with all those options and the ride quality. Historically I am a Tundra fan and owner but I am seriously leaning toward the F150 as my next vehicle so I'm keeping my good eye on you lol.
I am in the same boat, currently in a 2007 Tundra, and was watching the new Tundra. But after seeing the issues, and personally not loving the one I saw on the lot, I am looking at the Powerboost F150
Question I have a 21 F150 Lariet with the same radio. I’m now having the same problems with the radio going black and coming back on . Took it in to the dealer they updated the radio and it still hasn’t fixed the issue. Can you tell me what your dealer did to fix it? Which APIM module was replaced. Other than that it’s been a solid truck. Keep the videos coming. Thanks
Definitely the same problem I had. They had to replace the APIM which is just a completely module. There is only one. Trick I learned is if you hit the screen brightness button on the left of the dash it will bring the screen back on. It’s a temporary fix.
@@GearsGadgets same here only way to turn it back on is by hitting the instrument cluster brightness button. Also I noticed when using the physical button to turn off the display, the only way to turn it on is using the instrument cluster button. Touching the screen or pushing the display button does nothing. I think there were some bad modules made. Thank you for your help. I’m going in next week so hopefully they’ll do something. Luckily I have video showing the screen turning off an on. Thanks again
@@GearsGadgets awesome! I installed my escort max 360 on my 17 f250 but I just recently ordered a 22 f150 and am curious how installation is on these new ones.
Haha just finished your “hate” video! (Which was the only one that was generally negative). Glad some things have sorted out. What’s your view on their customer service now?
I have the exact same truck except mine is carbonized gray. I have not had one single problem with it in the first 2000 miles it’s been driven. You must’ve got a bad one LOL!
Next week will be whatever it is. I know people hate when someone is able to roll with the punches and change opinions but it’s who I am. If this truck was how it is today, all of the previous videos wouldn’t have been created. Ford quality and service dictates the past, present, and future videos on my F-150. I can and will deliver my opinions on products as they develop and just because something was negative doesn’t mean it can’t improve, or get worse.
in the 22 models, they removed the cupholder lights, glovebox light, front console light, changed license light bulbs to incandescent, and removed LED screens on temp control to basic "Temp" using the infotainment center for temperate.
@@omightyone85 What do you imagine was the thinking with that, in terms of that being an upgrade? I guess I missed my chance to order a 21, but it seems like a front console light, glovebox light, and ability to have useparate tempature controls from teh infotainment center are pretty good features, no?
Better option is to get a RAM 1500. My 2020 5.7L eTorque Laramie has been excellent, all pluses, zero minuses. Specify heated front seats but no sunroof for the best luxury/price ratio. Traded in a 2011 F-150 Platinum ecoboost. The ecoboost engine was reliable but fuel mileage not near claimed mpg and the truck accumulated more electrical problems despite being babied. Good riddance and the best automotive move I have ever made. They say Ford owners don't switch to Chevy and vice versa, but both Ford and Chevy owners will switch to RAM.
How’s the RAM reliability tho? Maybe I’m only hearing loyal Ford/Chevy fans speak, but I hear the RAM reliability is generally the worst of the big 3. Consumer Reports seemed to reflect this too.
@@gregoryf9299 The 2021 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS) ranks Ram brand vehicles as having the highest overall initial quality. The IQS measures new vehicle quality within the first 90 days of ownership and bases its results on owner feedback, good, bad or otherwise.
@@gregoryf9299 Consumer Reports gave the 2021 Ram 1500 a score of 63 overall. However, that 63 was still enough to take first place on the list of full-sized pickup trucks.
Agreed (mar 22 issue actually gave it a score of 75) but on p9 their predicted reliability is lower than f150 (and same as gmc/Chevy). Tho at 2nd glance that’s for the Classic so maybe the redesign will prove more durable in time.
Now that your ON and OFF again relationship with your truck is back ON, and you two have made up and look to be a long term couple… it might be time to do some mods? I know you love the Caddy (sorry Lincoln Town Car) like ride in the F-150 but you could start by adding some tuned suspension upgrades like King, Icon or Bilstien suspension upgrades and a 3” lift with some AT tires from Toyo, Nitto, BFG, on Methods…. ? Maybe get a small portable air compressor (demo the 7.2kw power) so you can air down and pump her a back up after a scenic drive. Some mods like this might give you two something else to talk about and earn some cred back with viewers? That gravel driveway video (I me an OFF-ROAD) you did to demonstrate your trucks capabilities sans-tarmac was pathetic. It’s time to drop some coin and give’r some bolt-ons. You’re going to need something to get you two through till summer when you can demo frying eggs through the Sun roof on the console work surface. Plan B… backlogs with suppliers means it could take some time to get coilovers, upper control arms, hydraulic bump stops, tires and wheels. Soooo, I suggest you buy a Harbor Freight portable air compressor and a dozen truck tire tubes. Then enlist someone (maybe a friend or your sister or wife?) to find a collection of UofA girls in need of an escape from their studies and think a float down the Verde River is the perfect way to cool off from the heat while attending summer school. Seriously. You’ve been at this UA-cam thing for how long and haven’t figured out the ratio of truck content to bikinis yet? Trying to claim the space between “Engineering Explained” and “westen champlin” isn’t exactly a niche. Gears & Gadgets? Doesn’t exactly bring smiles to your audience’s face. Maybe rebrand as “Tits & Teeth”. Subscription will skyrocket! And when your wife kicks you out of the house you can do a whole video series on what it’s like to truck camp out of the PowerBoost. I’m sure Mav would be willing to give you some tips. Cheers!
Oh how I love the absurd “that isn’t off road” comment from people who clearly don’t realize that is about as “off road” as it gets here in Arizona before you get into some insane rock crawling that virtually nobody is doing in their $65,000 pickup. The overwhelming majority of real truck people are traversing exactly what I traversed to get to a job site, not rock crawling through Moab for UA-cam views. Other option is you come down here and scout me out some great winding muddy trails that weave through the lush green forests of the arid Arizona Sonoran desert. It wasn’t pathetic, it was realistic in the environment that I live with the truck I own.
But then I would own a truck that I thought was ugly. Looks are subjective but certainly a significant importance when spending tens of thousands of dollars.
it was hate… love.. next will be whatever the truck is doing at the time. I can only deliver the content and opinions about the product as I am experiencing it at the time I am experiencing it. I won’t just forever hate on something because I did previously to defend my previous position if things change. I know this confuses some people who form rigid opinions then forever choose to defend that opinion regardless of future developments. Not me.
95.2% of views on UA-cam come from unsubscribed viewers so while I appreciate your position, I am making content around what I currently have to talk about. The beautiful thing about UA-cam is you have the choice to sub or unsubscribe as I do myself with channels if they no longer entertain me. As a creator I also create what I want to create because I am in this for my own enjoyment as well.

Chris I have a 2021 f150 limited powerboost and I am having the same problem I took it to the ford dealership after running a diagnostic check it turns out the problem is the apin it will not turn on to receive the automatic updates which control the electronics the dealership order a new apin I just waiting to get installed I think if you take to the dealership have them running a diagnostic check why the over the air updates are working the problem if you don’t get it fixed you will not able to get the blue Cruz when in come available they will tell you to replace the apin which is located behind the radio hope this will help you
Glad for you Dan. How is the mileage doing?
WHat is your average daily mpg?
Can you make a video on how you installed your blendmount? & hardwire?
Yeah I will. I have a whole detector video coming sometime soon.
@@GearsGadgets awesome! I installed my escort max 360 on my 17 f250 but I just recently ordered a 22 f150 and am curious how installation is on these new ones.
You should add chapters to your videos
Haha just finished your “hate” video! (Which was the only one that was generally negative). Glad some things have sorted out.
What’s your view on their customer service now?
I have the exact same truck except mine is carbonized gray. I have not had one single problem with it in the first 2000 miles it’s been driven. You must’ve got a bad one LOL!
Next week video will be 'why I hate my F-150 again'
Next week will be whatever it is. I know people hate when someone is able to roll with the punches and change opinions but it’s who I am. If this truck was how it is today, all of the previous videos wouldn’t have been created. Ford quality and service dictates the past, present, and future videos on my F-150. I can and will deliver my opinions on products as they develop and just because something was negative doesn’t mean it can’t improve, or get worse.
hey any insight into the changes in 22, can you detail the differences between the 22 and 21 models?
in the 22 models, they removed the cupholder lights, glovebox light, front console light, changed license light bulbs to incandescent, and removed LED screens on temp control to basic "Temp" using the infotainment center for temperate.
@@omightyone85 What do you imagine was the thinking with that, in terms of that being an upgrade? I guess I missed my chance to order a 21, but it seems like a front console light, glovebox light, and ability to have useparate tempature controls from teh infotainment center are pretty good features, no?
Simplicity in women and trucks is best.
What is the payload of your truck?
On ride quality. Youve apperantly never riden in a ram? Its NOT disputable
You ain't going to sell out for the Atx4 r u? Big dog
Too bad that your turn signals are four times the size of your brake lights
I actually said that but cut it for time.
Speaking of turn signals, is there any way you can turn down the volume on the turn signal ticker??
Why such poor gas mileage? I watch others who say they’re getting 24-28 mpg’s
A lot depends on how you drive. Overwhelmingly majority of my driving is done so 80 mph on the highway.
Gotcha.
Fastest truck ever made
@@RAM-KINGOFTRUCKS Lol..... second fastest is okay
I rented an F350 today to move the daughter. It’s the worst truck I’ve ever driven. Pile of junk
@@GearsGadgets From your female audience/ gear-head/ gadget enthusiast.... please don't rebrand.
Yeah, just wait for the update from our loving government that won’t let your truck start one day ( on purpose) during a crisis.
Someones got small package problems.
I would argue it is the person who types out such a comment to a random grown man they have never met before as a means of self gratification.
That's just creepy man
You complaint too much about the might f150, you need to design your own truck buddie! Just saying , there is no perfect truck out there.
Buy Honda or Toyota a all those problems go way.
But then I would own a truck that I thought was ugly. Looks are subjective but certainly a significant importance when spending tens of thousands of dollars.
wtf dude enough

Love…Hate…Love…Hate. Lol
it was hate… love.. next will be whatever the truck is doing at the time. I can only deliver the content and opinions about the product as I am experiencing it at the time I am experiencing it. I won’t just forever hate on something because I did previously to defend my previous position if things change. I know this confuses some people who form rigid opinions then forever choose to defend that opinion regardless of future developments. Not me.
Way to milk this F-150…. Getting sorta tired of the topic bro…..
