    You’ve an amazing skill Steve for turning a landscape (which at first can look quite ordinary) into something quite beautiful! You demonstrate to me at any rate, that the most powerful tool at the photographer’s disposal is that of ‘selection’ - the art of selection and the art of seeing.

    I’m saving this video so I can watch it again. Those sepia tone prints with all that lovely grain was stunning Steve. What views. What atmosphere. I was going to watch this video during my lunch break in between printing a load of sepia slides from the 1960’s for a customer.. No, I thought. I savour this video for tonight.. I went for a long walk this evening, no camera and just drank in the amazing colours in the sunset in front of me with turquoise and wispy white clouds. I needed the refresh air after a full day of a lab with the smell of chemistry, not that I can smell,it anymore. More and more people coming in asking if we process film.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  2 роки тому +1

      I’m glad the demand for processing g is up Simon although it will mean you spending more time with the chemicals 🙂. Sometimes just being outside is enough for me, on many local walks I don’t carry a camera so I can just enjoy the scenery without interruption.

    Love the chatty videos. Amazing running up that mountain, if I didn’t know better, I’d have thought you sped the video up, but after watching your epic walk where you had to cool your feet, I have little doubt you probably set a record going up!
    One quick question, not sure if you covered it in a previous video, but why do you rate the film differently? Is it for better contrast and you’re metering through the camera?
    Thanks for taking us along!

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  2 роки тому

      Hi Dan and thanks for the print order, it’s on its way to you now 😊. I will rate the film depending on the contrast and develop accordingly IE if I overexposed I’ll underdevelop to preserve the shadows and tame the highlights. Of course it isn’t possible to change development for the roll, you need to pick a time and every negative gets the same so I usually try to arrive at a rating (exposure index) at the start of the walk. Early on it was fairly balanced lighting so 400 or 320 would give enough shadow detail, had it brightened up and got more contrasty I’d have wanted to lower the speed and shorten development. If, as later on, it had got very dull it would have looked good at 800 or more but I’d already committed to 400 by then so the later negs were a little flat.

    I started off thinking ...yuk, you are going to use 35mm, but than I saw your images, and now I will pull out my 35mm camera once again and give it a try. I am so use to 6x7/6x9/612/617/4x5/5x7 (more so 612/617 for convenience.....no loading holders or the weight).....you see the problem. I had lost respect for 35mm, but you turned that around. Going to be fun, bring me back to my teen years with the 35mm camera. Lot of great images there, and I loved the grain and sepia toning....the mood I think is what is bringing me back to 35mm. A dslr would not have done the same, and fake grain does not work. A dslr is just too easy, press the button, gives you the result. You wonder who is the photographer, when no thinking is involved. Going to buy a raincoat for me and the camera.

    • @SteveONions

    Nice work Steve, fully entertaining again, I do look forward to your videos and the landscape you walk.😊 Coincidentally, I received a book today... 'SNOWDONIA REVISITED' by JOHN CLOW. He shoots mono using a Blad. You maybe have the book? But if you don't, you can buy the book for a couple of bob from a popular online book seller. It's nice to watch your videos, then read and look at the plates within said book and know the landscape isn't a million miles away. I love the works of Adam's & John Sexton and look in stunned amazement at the beauty of the plates within their books but will never get the chance to visit those wonderful National parks. I bought another Nikon FE 2 this time in black. This one is immaculate with a 28 Nikkor AF 2.8D lens. I’m selling the lens as I already have a manual focus 28mm, but I’ve just bought a 35mm series E lens to replace it. Cheap I know but great quality none the less. 35mm is my favourite focal length. 2 boxes of digital gear going off to MPB tomorrow as I seem to be transitioning back to film based photography now. I will never ditch the digital for paid work, but my hobby is well and truly film based. I’m taking the Minolta XD7 out for a spin this weekend. The shutter sound on it is just the best. I do hope you put some of those shots on your Etsy site. I might have to treat myself to a print for my birthday. Keep up the great work Steve. A most enjoyable walk! Prints look good. Not sure of 35mm film in distant landscapes, esp. using longer lenses/zoom. i found longer lenses were low in resolution. (my opinion). All in all, was very productive. On a typical shoot-walk I carry one roll of 36. When finished I enjoy the place.

    Steve, have you experimented at all with developing xp2 in B&W chemicals? I've now read two different articles, one hosted on ilfords own website, documenting great results with hc110 + xp2 at iso 100-1600. In particular the 1600 looks fantastic! To my eye, the results appear much more like traditional silver emulsions.

      @@SteveONions From the article on ilfordphoto's website - "ILFORD XP2 SUPER IN BLACK AND WHITE CHEMISTRY", by Chris Moss, HC-110 1+49 times:
      EI 50 4 minutes
      EI 100 5 minutes
      EI 200 6.5 minutes (could probably go to 7)
      EI 400 10 minutes
      EI 800 13.5 minutes
      EI 1600 18 minutes
      It sounds like it needs a bit stronger fixer, 3+1 with Ilford Rapid, to avoid issues. I'm hoping to give this a go myself, but I won't have time until late October at the rate I'm going... Looks like a fantastic hike - great work on the channel sir!

      @@SteveONions I do all 35mm in the darkroom on diffusion enlargers. XP2 @ EI 200 for 7 mins @ 20C, with an HC-110 dilution of 1+49. That's the product of extensive testing and, like yourself, I've been at this for quite some time (made my first enlargement in 1967 at the age of 9, and haven't stopped yet; wish we had the papers today we had back then!). I worried first about losing some sharpness but I certainly did not and may have even gained some. Too close to call is always good enough for me. When I want grain, I shoot the traditional Ilford films, all 3. But XP2 in HC-110 is a completely different look and with great latitude/forgiveness with exposure and a surprising ability for enlargement (120 roll film is even more surprising). I've worked out the times for using this film at different speeds, but 200 seems to be a real sweet spot. I did begin with the article on the Ilford site and tweaked specifically for the darkroom process using Ilford FB and Bergger Prestige FB papers. I encourage you to give this a try. Loving your videos and this one in particular. The HP5 was a great call for that place and conditions, and also the lith prints were perfectly lovely. Keep up the good show!

      Most of the images are toned in Lightroom Jim with the remaining two being lith prints on Fomatone 532-II which exhibits the very warm tone seen in the video.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  2 роки тому

      Thank you. The lith prints are not toned, had I done so the warmth would have been lost and the shadows pushed towards a plum/purple hue. In fact I rarely if ever tone lith prints and rely on the papers naturally characteristics which are shifted subtly by the dilution of the lith chemicals.
