Greatest photography channel on youtube period, and I have watched alot of them over the years. Just the right combination of photographic art, equipment, technical aspects and a good lad enjoying himself out in nature.
Thank you 😊
💯 agree
Keep talking us through, Steve, I love it!
Thanks Iain.
Loving the longer video. Really liked the pinhole image of that latter structure. Nice one Steve
Thanks David 👍
Really enjoyed this. Thanks Steve.
You’re welcome Geoff.
Love your channel. I could listen to you talk all day. Subscribed
Wow, thank you!
I really enjoyed this one, Steve. And so nice to see you working with the pinhole again. And I was certainly envious of that location. It struck me as being overwhelming with possibilities. I look forward to your return there.
Glad you enjoyed it Bob, I’d love to revisit on a grim Winters day.
Grim Winter weather in Wales? Perish the thought.
A great outing! Loved it! We all done that, more gear, not sufficient film.. Well not at hand! The Pinhole was great! I like more contrast. The gold nice. Fuji renders very nice. Your Welsh Machu Pichu is great for images! I like all the chat! Made me feel being there! Bravo!
Thanks Jason.
Its been quite a few years since I have been over that way Steve. It must be a forgetting venue. I went on a hot sunny day, lugging a heavy 5x4 outfit and left the water bottle in the car! Some nice images there and a another great vlog Steve
Cheers
Diz
It would make a good location for large format Diz now I think about it, not too far from the car and the best angles are easy to setup a camera ( not to mention there’s nobody there!).
Waffling is great when served with a stick of grainy butter and an overexposed serving of 100% maple syrup images. Tasty and delicious.
😊🧇🧇
Man, I sure do appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. Always great.
Glad you like them!
A brilliant adventure and some lovely photographs.
Thank you, this was amazing. Looking forward to watch the next one.
Glad you enjoyed it Peter.
Another classic!!
Nice work and funny !!
Thanks Ruud.
Wow what an amazing location Id be lost in all the possibilities., not to mention the beauty of all the colors and textures and angles and.......
Many thanks!
Thanks for the tip of using a GoPro as a preview for the pinhole camera. Ill be trying that out today ... or tomorrow, or sometime in the near future.
Hope you get out eventually!
@@SteveONions I did try the GoPro viewfinder yesterday afternoon, it seems promising.
I plan on celebrating with a Mocha Pikachu this evening.
Great vid, Steve. Very pleasant and informative 👍
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Very fun! I liked the pinhole images best, I think. And you have convinced me to pick up the Fuji Instax.
Good choice!
This video and comments just reminded me. At the begining of covid, I made one of those body cap pinhole for the Bronica. Ended up being approx 80mm equivalent, so very easy to "preview". It also fits nicely as a "lens cap" for some of the other lenses adding varying degrees of magnification. Barely takes up space in the bag but very easy to misplace. I have to try to find it and use it again. Excellent video!
I did a similar thing with my Hasselblad some years ago, it made very good images and wasn’t too hard to time correctly providing I used a slow film.
Hi Steve ! Great video !!! Interesting photos !!!
Thanks for watching
Nice video Steve and really like how you explain your thinking behind taking your images
Glad you enjoyed it Steven.
This is my kind of place, Steve. I like some of those images you showed. It is useful for me to see the difference in the effect from the three cameras and how that needs to be something to consider for an outing. Thanks for posting; for sharing.
Thanks James, I certainly have a better idea of how I’ll approach the place next time. I don’t see it needing clean, high resolution pictures, rather a soft grainy look with a simple camera like a Holga.
Yeah. I want to see what you come away with using the Holga, and which film you choose for the day.@@SteveONions
Holga territory 👍
2nd trip will allow a little more
refinement 🤔
A lovely video, thank you. I think you've made me decide to visit N Wales for a couple of days soon.
You definitely should!
I like waffles.
😀🧇🧇🧇🧇🧇🧇
Great images steve as always , I remember my dad made a pinhole camera, it must have been 1961-2 , I vaguely remember the pics , don’t know what happened to them , loved the instax images including the plantation pic it had a surreal quality , at least on my tv . I really appreciate and look forward to your videos .
Glad you enjoyed it Shaun, shame you no longer have those pinhole pictures.
Wonderful stuff and sights. Even the Instax. Your pinhole photos are better than any of my G9 shots.
Thank you 🙂
I don’t shoot film, but do thoroughly enjoying following your thought process. Fab video
Thank you 😊
A wonderful day indeed.
You and I seem to be the only photographers on YT that says the shutter speed like this…….“ a 125th of a second” every one else on here says “1-125th of a second” which is wrong in my mind and drives me nuts……You and I were taught correctly Steve. Another great video BTW.
I’d never noticed this but yes, we are right 😊
I enjoyed this longer format video. Same thing happens to me as far as taking different format cameras on a shoot. At least, I have learned my lesson on that one, and no longer do it. I did enjoy the pictures out of that Fuji Evo camera though. Now you are giving me some GAS problems! Cheers.
I don’t often shoot with more than one camera and to be honest if I’d packed another 120 back I’d have used B&W and left the pinhole in the bag.
At least you were honest about the shots. I liked the pinhole ones. Am sure if you had the BW with the Bronica, it would be very nice. Anyway, am sure you’ll be back and come out with stunners. Looking forward to that. Thanks
I definitely missed having a B&W back for the Bronica, I felt a little out of sorts with the colour.
Wish you could come out to France. There's plenty of abandoned buildings to photograph. I'm usually testing cameras I repair so going out with 3 at a time seems normal for me. I love the Olympus Pen S I serviced and being half frame I get more photos. You also start looking at portrait shots being as that's how the viewfinder is set up.
I do find myself shooting a lot of portrait compositions Peter, when I used 645 rollfilm cameras this was the default and I really liked it.
@@SteveONions so glad I have alot of colour film velvia portra reala etc as the price now is crazy. I remember not so long ago I bought 95 rolls of expired film kept in a fridge for £1 a roll. It it was Kodak infrared 35 mm film at least two boxes of it. That film I've seen going for £30 a roll!!
I love the Pinhole image at 29:08.
i like the gold 200 photos i do use that film as you can get it at good price i use one off those zero image pin hole camera and i also find it really hard to see the numbers i picked up some of those credit card size fresnel lens works well and easy to store in your pocket or bag.
Good tip on the fresnel 👍
Some very nice shots especially in the latter half. I guess that color film is too flat to use in very flat lighting. Re batteries, I use silver oxide with my Bronica GS-1, more reliable than alkaline I found, and not too much more expensive given how long they last. Apparently it's not just about voltage, the silver oxide ones also generate more current, some alkalines just don't work on my camera even when new. Also, I made it part of my work flow to take the battery out at the end of every shoot. That means a risk of forgetting to put it back in the next time, but so far so good. The battery lasts a lot longer that way, I guess there is a lot of current leakage in camera even with the switch off. Cheers from Montreal! p.s. You've inspired me to look into getting an instant camera, I think the SQ6 if I can find one.
I’ve been researching different battery options and came across a few comments about silver oxide so I may try them out. Like you I now remove the batteries after a shoot and hope this keeps them in better condition.
I did find the Gold 200 very flat in that light and would go for Portra 400 or 800 next time if shooting colour but to be honest a grainy B&W film would be better.
Liked the image at 23:11. The Fuji images were nice too. I really liked the image at 26:02. The pinhole at 27:43 was nice too. The pinhole at 29:14 was fabulous. The colors looked best on the later images. I wonder if the gold film needs a lot of light or maybe it was the polarizer or both.
Thanks Dann, I’m sure I could improve the colours with a little more care at the scanning stage.
Geez you weren’t kidding. More waffles than a Belgium picnic 😂
😀🧇
I think you should return with a pinhole camera 👍🏻
Great location. Think I would like more contrast (more sunlight) to shoot there :-)
It was a bit dull, would have suited a grainy B&W film.
In my admittedly limited experience, the dynamic range of the Instax can’t accommodate a contrasty scene like the trees at about 25 minutes. Still, I’m tempted to try one of those cameras.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts in another fine video.
It is a bit limited, definitely needs care when shooting strong lighting.
I picked up a Bronica etrs the other day! It’s my first foray into medium format, previously I have shot 35 and digital (aps-c) I have a load of portra in there right now so I can’t wait to see how this video goes, hopefully it will inspire me! Which model is your bronica?
Thank you. My Bronica’s are the square format SQ models.
The bronica S2a is completely manual no batteries to worry about. I started with the ETRS kit that a lady in Canada gave me for free. This then led me to the square format and the hasselblad was far too overpriced so I did some research. Picked a briefcase bronica S2a with lenses and backs back in 2016 for less than £300! Took it to a beach in Wales with beautiful boulders and all the shots came out great.
A video of using ilford Delta 3200 would be appreciated.
Your wish will be granted on the next video Rick 😀
In the 80's Kodacolor Gold was advertised as the ultimate in colour film?
Maybe that's why I stuck with Kodachrome and Agfachrome 😂📷👍
Apologies for the spellings. I've forgotten 😱
We certainly had a great choice of slide stocks in the 80’s, I liked Fuji’s original 50 speed film before they replaced it with Velvia and like you I also used Agfa.
No, not everybody is as old as you. I'm OLDER! Developed my first roll in 1966 ...
You were far to critical of the pinhole images IMHO - thought they were all strong and would be amazing as a set. Preferred them to any Bronica shot.
I feel your scanning colour balance pain; its been a fight with both scanners from more than a decade, still not happy. Have largely gone to copying the negs on an LED light table with a Fuji XT-5 + 60mm macro. Better!!!
I’m also largely done with dedicated scanners, the speed and resolution of the digital camera approach is hard to beat.
any idea how old those old building foundations are?
Probably a couple of hundred years at least, most of the slate mining in Wales ended after WW2 but a lot of these quarries had short lives if the seam dried up.
Great video steve! I suggest using a higher quality mic for your voice overs
Thanks Mark, the mic is a very good one but I should place some sound deadening material behind it in future 👍
Oh! The Bronica seems to be playing up. I had a Bronica-C, before Nikon walked in, and took over quality control.. Leica needs that! Mine was a portable film shredder. Finally I was offered a New in box, Leica-M3, 50mm Summicron and meter! So the Bronica not cheap! Yet 1/2 price of Swedish Brownie! Hasselblad are not the answer. Way too much upkeep. I cannot get true focus on a Hassie! Never could! Bravo!
you can delete!
I also found the Hasselblad prone to difficulties, particularly the backs that needed a fair bit of maintenance.
I would have never considered the Instax. Has potential! Great images from the Bronica, even if the colors are different. Be careful mixing waffles and film. You don’t want developer on your breakfast and syrup in developing tanks. Very messy.
Fingers crossed!
I watch to your work now for years and like it much. But allow me to criticise you in one point: I think you often place the main objects exactly in the middle of your composition. In the worst case you get compositions that are symmetrical to the vertical middle line. I would advice you to move the main object of interest away from the center. So you get more interesting compositions. See for example: ua-cam.com/video/K7vVLVJTAxI/v-deo.html (sorry in German)
many images are square! I like the framing! I prefer word 'framing' to composition.. That's for food shots.
Hi Toni. Everyone has their own approach to composition and I just place things where they look best to me. I know it’s popular to move things off centre but in the square format in particular a symmetrical placement can work very well.
All the best, Steve.
Interesting mix of cameras Steve. To be honest I like to keep it simple on my wanderings - one camera and one film stock - mono of course. Best wishes from The Rhondda.
It did confuse me Ray, just one camera with me tomorrow.
