I wrote a note to myself in 1993 to remember to watch this performance on 120 minutes on Sunday night. My girlfriend at the time found the note and was irritated that I was so passionate about watching Juliana. Now that I’m viewing this again almost 30 years later, I’m reminded why it was essential viewing.
I lost my sister Barbara in 2004 and yep, this song was always about her. She did take me to my first all ages show! It only became sad when she passed away. Here's to all the great sisters we love and miss!
The 90s were Great! Healthy economy as well as the embracing of the Grunge and Alternative Culture! Hardly a day goes by that I'm not Thankful that I was young during the 90s! Kids these days definitely have things harder!
Nicholas Ramsey Many kids today are turning to that same 90s music via UA-cam and elsewhere. Those of us who were fortunate enough to be young during that era should not forget to hold onto that SPIRIT today. We all need to come together and start a new movement.
Yeah, forget going to college, church, work, clubs, garlic festivals, Walmart, basically-WE NEED CONCEALED GUN PERMITS just to go outside! And, this shit is now happening in the daytime! 😳 I would love to go back to the 80's and 90's! It'll never be the same, dammit! 😰
Never forgot this one. Had the old tape because my alternative music loving friend had no cable and had me do that every Sunday night. Great to see it again after the decades, since JH did this so beautifully.
love her vocals and this stripped down version...also, i should point out i was at that show she sings of. we met one another there. we kissed during "call my name".
For those of you who point out that Juliana Hatfield doesn't really have a sister: think for a moment about your logic. Just because Juliana Hatfield doesn't have a sister doesn't mean she cannot sing this song or write a song about having a sister, for that matter. When we were kids, things we consider mundane and everyday as adults acquired a large significance and meaning. She is documenting the truths found in the mythologies that we create as children with our siblings. Doesn't the song capture the essence about what it's like to have a sister? Surely, the fact that Juliana Hatfield doesn't actually have a sister only proves to highlight her imagination and talent.
Perhaps, sister is a symbol for someone else, so that that person won't get offended and targeted. I'm guessing, it was really her mother, she's talking about here :-) God bless, Rev. 21:4
I lost my sister in 2002. she was 27, I was 30. Her name was Karyn. I miss her. and although I was older... this song spoke to me as well... I obviously had heard it before her death, and loved it.. but after she passed... ugh. I feel you, sis. RIP Karyn.
Juliana is one of the most underated female singer songwriters of the early 1990's alternative music era she wrote some catchy songs love this song it is a classic, I miss the early 1990's alternative music scene Mtv 120 min alternative nation shows this is the last great era of music!
Does anyone have the JBTV live acoustic version of this song? Please repost it if you have. I have been checking UA-cam a couple times a year to look for it.
wxrt used to play indie songs , that's where i first heard this song, like over 15 years ago. early 90's had alot of very good female folksy stuff like alanis, jewel, juliana, lisa loeb... now theres lady gaga and shikira,rihana... great to look at...to listen to...not so much. i think the 2008 posting of this song is even better
this is real alternative music; she is the ultimate alternative artist of the ones that ever became well-known and this is the archetypal alternative song and performance.
Still sends shivers down my spine every time I hear her sing. Crazy great.

Freaking perfect version of this song. Hard to describe how she hits every musical and emotional note just right on this.
TJPenitencia it’s because she’s blessed with extreme talent
My big sister died today. When this song came out I sang it to her. I posted this version on fb. I hope people get it...RIP Paige.
I'm so sorry! ❤ I'm pretty sure that she's in a way better place than this evil 🌎
J'aime beaucoup cette artiste 👍
I love this song.
I have always said that this is the quintessential rock song. So perfect in every way!

Amazing. Beautiful.
I remember hearing this the first time as a kid on NPR and how they talked about the lyrics. Such an awesome song.
So underrated. Such a beautiful voice.
The constant use of the word 'underrated' is very over-rated..!
All I have to say is.... for a VHS this is super clear!

she totally rocks!
Once upon a time when there was a melody.... imagine do acoustic versions of today's hits.... who will recognize? No one cause the melodys gone... 😢

damn, I didn't realize how much she sounded like the album singing live. She has better pitch than some of my other 90's female alt-rock heroes.
Thanks for posting! Brings back intense memories of the 90s and high school!!
Great song. God bless Juliana.
This is sutch a great thing to hear.
Thanks Julianna.
Ever since My So-Called Life, I've loved Juliana. She reminds me of Jewel, who also rocks.
I love this
this song is so pretty i love her
She was always a great guitar player. Best sound from the 90s.
Describes my relationship with my big sister as a teen almost perfectly. This song is beautiful.
Bitter-sweet-thanks for posting!
I loved the 90s
I love her so much
Nice tasteful guitarist.

Mazzaroth M. heard I'm an interview she actually got the lyrics from her brothers journal
She has already said that in reality it is about herself as she does not have a sister.
She said it was about her older brothers girlfriend who was like a sister to her

I thought it was about her grandfather who identified as her sister 🤔

I found it!!!!😍😭
god i miss this girl.
I found my favorite song 90s🙂😊
If every female in the world was real like Juliana the universe would be soooo much better.
Time sho does fly.
Taylor Shit only wishes she could write a song this good.
"Tay" is ok but you're right, she ain't no Juliana..!
there was a recording of ugly in this session too, used to be on youtube...
@theantfish Mine was named Susan...18..lost in 87. Drunk driving accident. Right there with you. This song will forever speak to me.
❤
i wonder if nirvana got any inspiration from juliana. i met her years ago and not knew what i saw.
Does anyone have the JBTV live acoustic version of this song? Please repost it if you have. I have been checking UA-cam a couple times a year to look for it.
I wish that she was my high school love....
i recorded this! ah the days of blank tapes.
Me too 🌝
Jules, what a babe.
I luv this song, is it really true? did Juliana actually have a sister who died or just left? does anyone know?
I did my senior project on guitar, and I wished I had a fictitious sister too...😰
i have decided, i will play this at my sister's funeral. no I'm not going to ask her in advance
i have the electric version, but UA-cam wouldn't let me post it.
It's on there now!
she had an older friend that was very influential to her but was sometimes aloof ..read her website or her book
hi!!she trully always was way the coolest girl around.... period... hi blake bys..
Everyone was so harsh on her in the 90s and she puts all the current pop-rock girls to shame.
Those maryjanes....
Cutie!
A thoughtful version dedicated to my sister Nicole, who died, Labor Day 2012
❤
My Sister
Juliana Hatfield Three
Produced by Scott Litt
Album: Become What You Are
My sister
My sister
My sister
I hate my sister, she's such a bitch
She acts as if she doesn't even know that I exist
But I would do anything to let her know I care
But I am only talking to myself 'cause she isn't there
My sister, I love my sister, she's the best
She's cooler than any other girl that I have ever met
She had the greatest band, she had the greatest guy
She's good at everything and doesn't even try
She's got a wall around her nobody can climb
She lets her ladder down for those who really shine
I tried to scale it, but to me she's blind
So I lit a firecracker, went off in my eye
I miss my sister, why'd she go ?
She's the one who would have taken me
To my first all-ages show
It was the Violent Femmes and the Del Fuegos
Before they had a record out
Before they went gold
And started to grow
I miss my sister
I miss my sister
I miss my sister
I really miss her

This song is funny since she doesn't even have a sister.

without wanting to offend anyone....: horrendous. This abysmal performance has given me a headache.
Then take 2 aspirins and stay away from children-like it says on the bottle. 😉
